Fresh accusations of plagiarism are being hurled at Barack Obama for his use of language on the stump that directly mirrors speeches given by Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick. But there is no fresh news here: in fact, this rhetorical connection between the two pols was noted by the Boston Globe way back in April of 2007.

In an article titled, "Patrick, Obama campaigns share language of 'hope,'" Globe reporter Scott Helman noted that the "just words" theme of Deval Patrick's speech were born out of accusations that mirror the ones Obama is facing now, and that Obama was present on one occasion when Patrick deployed the language:

Of all the things Deval Patrick's Republican opponent threw at him in last year's governor's race, one charge that stuck in his craw was that his speeches were more fluff than substance -- that they were, in Patrick's telling, "just words." So he devised an artful response.

" 'We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal' -- just words," Patrick said at a rally in Roxbury right before Election Day. " 'We have nothing to fear but fear itself' -- just words. . . . 'I have a dream' -- just words. They're all just words."

The crowd erupted as it got Patrick's point about the power of language. But perhaps no one at the rally understood the point better than Barack Obama, who had joined him on stage that night.

Similarly, the article from April 2007 specifically mentioned that the Obama campaign had every intention of studying the success of his friend, Patrick, as a model for his own Presidential run:

In the midst of his improbable run for office, Obama and his advisers have evidently studied Patrick's up-from-nowhere victory in Massachusetts and are borrowing themes, messages, and even specific lines for the presidential campaign.

Both men were said by the Globe to be -- at the time -- "learning from and feeding off each other." The root of their shared rhetoric was identified as David Axelrod, who advised both campaigns. And while Patrick did notably back away from using Obama's "Yes we can" refrain -- Patrick campaign advisor Dan Payne said at the time, "We definitely didn't want to copy him, Deval takes pride in his words and he wants to use them uniquely" -- there's no indication that either man objected to sharing rhetorical flourishes.

Similarly, there wasn't any indication back in April of last year that this matter was any cause for concern or complaint. State Democratic Party chair Phillip W. Johnston spoke of the two men with admiration: "We all said that we could have closed our eyes when Obama spoke [and] it could have been Deval. To us it was a similar kind of message. It's a message that transcends partisan politics."

I think Hillary Clinton should pay some attention to her own campaign and knock of this obsession she has with Barak Obama and his every word and deed.

If you all weren't so Probama (please note that word is original to me), you would deal with the issue here and not focus on Senator Clinton .... you're sounding a little like the Bush supporters who come back with discussions of what President Clinton was up to with Monica rather than address what is wrong in Iraq .... you sound like a bit of an apologist or should we say proapoligist -- mine there, too!

She's all glass houses and stolen stones - dang, I almost broke the tee-vee when she started tuning her deaf fork right into yes we will and fired up and ready to go - just to name a few ... neither irony nor hypocrisy are lost on the HRC campaign. Too bad - they both have gotten a lot of respect flushed down the proverbial drains - we are not just tired of them, we are exhausted by the drama mama and her courtiers.

Obama's lines are written by a young white dude who is the brother of a head honcho at Foxs News. Do you think that's why Rove and other Repuglicans are pushing for BO? They want to cream him and they know their internal polling shows there is racism in this country no matter what people tell the pollsters.

What a non-story! The guy Obama "stole" from knew Obama was using the lines, is fine with that, doesn't think he needs to be credited with it, and supports Obama. They are friends who share stuff like this.

Next!

Indeed, Mrs. Clinton made some of the same arguments Sunday in New Hampshire when she defended her earnest speaking style by saying, in an indirect reference to Mr. Obama, "you campaign in poetry, you govern in prose."

That particular political maxim was first uttered in a 1985 speech at Yale University-- by Mr. Cuomo.

"She didn't attribute it to me, although it's in Bartlett's Quotations and they did," the former governor said, laughing.

Talk about calling the Kettle black. This is stupid, pathetic, and signs of desperation.

We should all be talking about Taylor Marsh being paid by the DLC to distort and shill for the Clintons and then HuffPost posting some of her paid priopaganda. That is what the CLINTONS are all about they are CRIMINALS

Not to mention Hillary using "Fired up and ready to go." Edith Childs should sue Clinton if it's such a big deal.

Every politicians borrows lines from other politicians. Hillary borrows from Barack all the time.

Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, and JFK is owed a lot in royalties from most politicians.
This is a non issue.

Hillary has set feminism back 10 years. She makes it appear that she is incapable of being her own woman which makes one infer that it is impossible for a woman to run for president without a former president as her husband.

If we want to say that using literal phrasing from someone else without attributing the original author of the those phrases is plagiarism, then EVERY POLITICAL SPEECH ever made by a politician not written by that person is plagiarism. Such as: The State of the Union address, Inaugural addresses, virtually everything George W. Bush has said in public are the words of others. Much of what Reagan, JFK, probably FDR—-noted for being extraordinary orators--and most other major American politician. Even comments made in Congressional sessions are sometimes written by others. Hillary speaks words written by speechwriters at times. Hence, she’s a plagiarist, too, no? Do Hillary et al. say "This speech I'm giving was written by x, y, and z."

The Biden comparison is ludicrous. He was presenting things about himself as being himself. Obama and political speeches written by speechwriters are about ideas, vision, beliefs, values, and policy. Not trying to represent who the speaker actually *is* and what their background is.

Get over it. I just watched Pat Buchanan on Hardball slam Obama for it. Pardon me, but wasn't Buchanan a Speechwriter for Nixon (Ford?)?

So Tricky Dick and anyone else he wrote for plagiarized him?

He has lifted the entire theme of his friends Gubernatorial campaign. That is no small thing.
No one else could get away with this. It's not just a few words...it's the overall theme, complete with "hope" and "together we can".
Look I don't dislike Obama. I do not like however this idea that he is somehow above it all when he is running a campaign designed to sell himself to the American people.
It's this lofty BS that is really annoying.

Obama's speeches are written by 25 year-old hacks who were lucky enough to work for Theodore Olsen. You're all so enamored with BHO's ability to conjure images of the Kennedys. Um, that's because he's using their people. It's no coincidence. (Kennedys + Obama)*Rove = President McCain. The Kennedys will stop at nothing to keep a woman from being president. From Norma Jean to Mary Jo, to getting their raping and murdering nephews acquitted - that's some he-man-woman-haters club Teddy's running over there.

Oh, is THIS Hillary's new theme?! What has it been, what will it be next? The Clinton campaign clearly does not get it - from failing to foresee that small states can matter, small donations add up, that inspiration matters... What will she do if Iran or N Korea do something she failed to foresee? Cry? Call Bill? Ready on day one? What is this kind of a campaign showing us? A "leader" shielded from reality in a cocoon of trusted advisors where loyalty trumps competence? (Where did we see this before?) Now Sen Clinton wants to do to the country what she did to her campaign?

Of course, Clintons are THE ESTABLISHMENT, no matter how much they want to paint Obama as bad, they just wind up making themselves look the fool. The Clintons are OLD NEWS, dirty politics of the 90s come back to haunt us. We have a clear choice, Old vs. New. Change vs. more of the same. It really is that simple.

Dirty politics of the 90's. Like when Newt got his ass handed to him in 96 over the budget by Bill? Like when we all made money and had peace and prosperity? When he signed the FMLA so I could take care of my dying father? When he raised the minimum wage? When he backed Yeltsin and saved Russia from being overrun by the communists? When he got Rudy the money to hire more cops in NY and it's now the safest big city in America? When he BALANCED THE BUDGET AND EVER-AFTER CLAIMED THE MANTLE OF FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY FROM THE REPUBLICANS? You mean those dirty politics? Obama's being run by the Kennedys - he IS the establishment. Make no mistake. This is their last chance to reclaim the party for themselves and away from competent and accomplished people. It's Teddy's last stand. He's the crazy old man on the porch.
