I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Bush Cia Obama

On the front page of Tuesday's Washington Post was an article detailing how in late January U.S. forces, acting with autonomy inside Pakistan, were able to target and kill Abu Laith al-Libi, a senior al-Qaeda commander.

The strike, which came without the Pakistani government's knowledge and helped eliminate an individual who had long eluded the spy-agency's capture, was an obvious boon in the War on Terror. But the political implications of the operation were just as fascinating.

In August, Sen. Barack Obama had made the argument that, as president, he would target Al Qaeda officials in Pakistan even without the country's acquiescence -- the type of attack that, six months later, proved to be successful.

At the time, Obama was roundly criticized for his remarks, both by his Democratic competitors for the White House and by the Bush administration.

"We think that our approach to Pakistan is not only one that respects the sovereignty of Pakistan, but also is designed so that we are working in cooperation," said then-Press Secretary Tony Snow.

And just one week ago, President Bush himself lambasted Obama's approach to foreign affairs.

"I certainly don't know what he believes in," Bush said on February 10, about Obama. "The only foreign policy thing I remember he said was he's going to attack Pakistan and embrace Ahmadinejad."

To be sure, not everything is known about the extent and execution of the CIA's operation. But, on the surface, it carries similarities to Obama's stated approach towards Pakistan's terrorism problem, the same approach Bush trivialized.

Here is Obama's August 2 statement at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars:

"I understand that President Musharraf has his own challenges... But let me make this clear. There are terrorists holed up in those mountains who murdered 3,000 Americans. They are plotting to strike again. ... If we have actionable intelligence about high-value terrorist targets and President Musharraf will not act, we will."
And here are some excerpts from Tuesday's Washington Post article.
In the predawn hours of Jan. 29, a CIA Predator aircraft flew in a slow arc above the Pakistani town of Mir Ali. The drone's operator, relying on information secretly passed to the CIA by local informants, clicked a computer mouse and sent the first of two Hellfire missiles hurtling toward a cluster of mud-brick buildings a few miles from the town center.

The missiles killed Abu Laith al-Libi, a senior al-Qaeda commander and a man who had repeatedly eluded the CIA's dragnet. It was the first successful strike against al-Qaeda's core leadership in two years, and it involved, U.S. officials say, an unusual degree of autonomy by the CIA inside Pakistan.

It is an approach that some U.S. officials say could be used more frequently this year, particularly if a power vacuum results from yesterday's election and associated political tumult. The administration also feels an increased sense of urgency about undermining al-Qaeda before President Bush leaves office, making it less hesitant, said one official familiar with the incident.
Having requested the Pakistani government's official permission for such strikes on previous occasions, only to be put off or turned down, this time the U.S. spy agency did not seek approval. The government of Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf was notified only as the operation was underway, according to the officials, who insisted on anonymity because of diplomatic sensitivities.

Idiots. You don't kill ideas by killing people. It didn't work 2000 years ago, it won't work now. Obama's signing on to assassination is his worst idea. It justifies someone else who may want to assassinate him. I can't tell much difference between our killing and their killing. Except we have a Constitution that's supposed to show us a better way.

well i dont...from some of the news reporting hes been loose since the 80s and put in plenty of work against american targets. its nothing more than americas most wanted. the info was passed and he was dealt with. the commander was notified there in pakistan and he did nothing to get this guy then we did what was necessary... even bill clinton was criticized when he knew where obama was and didnt act fast enough...remember that...i bet that isnt the case now...they have to cooperate ESPECIALLY AFTER WE SUPPLIED PAKISTAN WITH WEAPONRY INCULDING NUKES TO DEFEND THEMSELVES. if the army falls to the terrorists in the country and they get control...isreal would be in some real trouble and im sure their approach to free bombing would change quickly if pakistan and iran get together and drop the WHAM on them

who cares about 9/11. 3,000 Americans dead and now we have two wars and a failing economy and ruined international reputation. You know how many Americans die on the freeway every year? 25,000. 9/11 was an insignificant incident that we let take control because of our fear and stupidity, every person who died that day has been dishonored.

I care about 9/11, and I care about making sure it doesn't happen again. Just as Americans cared about Pearl Harbor, we care about our 9/11. You don't stand by and let your country get attacked. Period. The idea will die out when their movement is no longer successful, or even a movement, and that's a fact.

Iraq was a crime, the terror source has to be stopped, but make no mistake, Americans, and this democrat, cares about 9/11 and always will.

I am a republican and I agree with you. Either republican or democrat will defend the country. And, that person will be held responsible for the safety of our citizens here in our homes as well as the successes or failures of foreign policy or interventions. It has always been and will always be. Neither party has a cornered the market on best practices as evidenced by the past 50 years.

There are suspicions that Pearl Harbor was also engineered.

Listen Des, People with decency and common sense care about 9/11. Maybe you don't care because you didn't lose a loved one on that day, which is why and I'm hoping why you thoughtlessly referred to their deaths as insignificant. Are you a Putin fan? Your rhetoric is so reminiscent of his decision to allow his people to perish in that theatre in 2002 during the government rescue assault against the Chechnian captors. But we care, Obama apparently cared which is why he is about to invade Pakistan if elected and Senator Hillary Clinton cared, which is why she voted for the war. The majority died on her turf: New York! 25,000 people die each year in traf. accidents. That is also horrific, but over 3,000 in one day is worse because there was no real assessed risk with merely going to work. There is always an assessed risk when you get behind the wheel. Many of the people who die, do so at the hands of misintentioned drunks who don't know how to control their impulses. These people were deliberately, intentionally, calculatedly murdered to make an example of us and our economy. No, my friend the economy sucked the day after 9/11 occurred and not because of the war. Whatever many of you think about this war,it is nothing compared to what we will go through if we let our guards down. Sorry, I am a democrat for Hillary and I am siding with Bush on this one.

Some day, all of you cynics and doubters are going to wake up and realize that Obama is the real deal. He knows what he's doing, and he's going to be a great president.

Bush's distortions notwithstanding, Obama was right about targeting terrorists inside Pakistan without Musharraf's permission. He was right about not nuking terrorist training camps (something Hillary insanely called a "gaffe") and he's right about having diplomatic relations with our friends as well as our enemies.

This idea that those we don't agree with must acknowledge our superiority before we talk to them is ridiculous. It has not made us safer. Diplomacy is a powerful tool.

You know what I find so funny, all of the pseudointellectuals who use the word "politic" as their screen name as if this in any way conveys to us their level of intelligence, let alone common sense. When you play with the big boys, make sure your argument is solid. Rice encouraged her, she did not force her to stand outside the car to be shot at. Furthermore, one could encourage you to screw a woman you barely know, but one would not be responsible if you got herpes or some STD because you refused to wear a condom. That would be your stupid move.

Wow, where do I start? The thought that using the Predator is an invasion into another country is a stretch at best. How can we possibly compare that effort to terminate a known terrorist to an invasion by Obama's troops into Pakistan? Granted we are comparing Bush to Obama here. But isn't that like comparing dumb to dumber? Need I remind the readers that Pakistan is Nuclear! Need I remind anyone that Bush has a very cozy relationship from Musharraf? The political climate brewing in Pakistan will not be as cozy in the coming years. To think that the U.S. can waltz into such a dangerous region is thoughtless. It belies a deeper problem with Obama. It appears he has no knowledge of global powers. That is frightening. Such a man will be aimless in his foreign policy. The Democratic Party is aimless in it's approach to the Middle East. I can honestly say, I am a better choice for President. Unfortunately, the closed 2 Party media won't give me the time of day. I would be surprised if this post even gets allowed. We are building America's Third Party. You can visit us www.coolrock.com to see my Solutions to the Iraq War. We have an exit strategy that would use Predators. But, I would never Attack a Nuclear Power. That is insane! David Jon Sponheim - America's Write-In Candidate

The only way we are going to see more of this type of "pro-active" work against terrorists is if Hillary is elected. McCain will ignore Afghanistan and Al Qaida, just like Bush has...and Obama is gutless.

If Obama is nominated we can expect 4 more years of the GOP...cause Obama will cave under the pressure of the GOP attack machine.

I just hope the losers of the far left don't come crying to hillary when it happens.

So, tell me again, how did invading Iraq help us to find and kill any of the al-Qaeda leadership?
If I read the blog correctly, this particular murderer was no where near Iraq. In fact, isn't our presence there drawing young jihadis from all over the Muslim world to Iraq for the "glory" of fighting the invaders?
Wouldn't the world be a safer place if the U.S. had never invaded Iraq?
Wouldn't the world be a safer place if the Republicans had never been elected to power?
Have the American people finally learned that voting against their own self-interest, by voting Republican, has to stop?

And I add: would the world be safer if we stopped pissing off everybody and inspiring them to think hard of ways to hurt us? But I forgot, you can't go to war with someone who loves you, can you? What do you think Halliburton? What if we took all the money we spend in Iraq on day, bought refrigerators, stoves, heaters etc. and parachuted them in Iraq, like we parachute the troops? The cost will be hardly noticeable, but the action will create a thunder. But, darn, I forgot again. We don't want to empower our enemies. People, I think I am very naive. Starting tomorrow I will read every issue of the National Review and every op-ed Kristol writes for the NY Times. I promise. But, darn again, by the time I smarten up, Obama will be president, and he likes naive people like me. Oh, well, I can't win. Good night.

The fact that this news comes after Bush totally distorted Obama's position on Pakistan and Iran to Chris Wallace is ironic. Bush caricatured Obama's position as wanting to invade Pakistan and be best friends with President Ahmadinejad of Iran. If Bill Clinton would have characterized Obama's position in that way the media would have been all over it. But characteristically, they gave Bush a free pass. No one expects Bush to be able to put two and two together.

Bush bullies all around him, but like all bullies, will back doen when challenged. Anyway, just a thought...

She ought to be damn proud of a country where her husband can go on stage and interrupt the previous speaker Clinton, who was given 5 minutes to give her after the vote speech and McCain 10 minutes to give his "I won tonight speech" and still be center stage on CNN and MSNBC and FOX news network for giving his entire campaign speech. In fact, she should be proud of the fact that scenerio has been repeated so many times after so many state's votes recently, that clearly the unfair treatment of yesteryears candidates for many levels of campaigns are being made up for during this campaign to benefit her husband. Actually I think that is more behind her pride then we all want to think. Seh should be proud of how well he has been able to manipulate such tv time. Once the real race begins, the fairness doctrine may limit his airtime to equal his opponents.

President Bush should thank Obama for giving him an idea about what would work. Bush should now ask for Obama's counsel on Iraq and Iran, before Obama's transition team prepares him for entry into the Oval Office as our next president.

Being the first black president will make Obama a historical presidency, but the power of his ideas will, as well.
