I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Bush Cia Obama

On the front page of Tuesday's Washington Post was an article detailing how in late January U.S. forces, acting with autonomy inside Pakistan, were able to target and kill Abu Laith al-Libi, a senior al-Qaeda commander.

The strike, which came without the Pakistani government's knowledge and helped eliminate an individual who had long eluded the spy-agency's capture, was an obvious boon in the War on Terror. But the political implications of the operation were just as fascinating.

In August, Sen. Barack Obama had made the argument that, as president, he would target Al Qaeda officials in Pakistan even without the country's acquiescence -- the type of attack that, six months later, proved to be successful.

At the time, Obama was roundly criticized for his remarks, both by his Democratic competitors for the White House and by the Bush administration.

"We think that our approach to Pakistan is not only one that respects the sovereignty of Pakistan, but also is designed so that we are working in cooperation," said then-Press Secretary Tony Snow.

And just one week ago, President Bush himself lambasted Obama's approach to foreign affairs.

"I certainly don't know what he believes in," Bush said on February 10, about Obama. "The only foreign policy thing I remember he said was he's going to attack Pakistan and embrace Ahmadinejad."

To be sure, not everything is known about the extent and execution of the CIA's operation. But, on the surface, it carries similarities to Obama's stated approach towards Pakistan's terrorism problem, the same approach Bush trivialized.

Here is Obama's August 2 statement at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars:

"I understand that President Musharraf has his own challenges... But let me make this clear. There are terrorists holed up in those mountains who murdered 3,000 Americans. They are plotting to strike again. ... If we have actionable intelligence about high-value terrorist targets and President Musharraf will not act, we will."
And here are some excerpts from Tuesday's Washington Post article.
In the predawn hours of Jan. 29, a CIA Predator aircraft flew in a slow arc above the Pakistani town of Mir Ali. The drone's operator, relying on information secretly passed to the CIA by local informants, clicked a computer mouse and sent the first of two Hellfire missiles hurtling toward a cluster of mud-brick buildings a few miles from the town center.

The missiles killed Abu Laith al-Libi, a senior al-Qaeda commander and a man who had repeatedly eluded the CIA's dragnet. It was the first successful strike against al-Qaeda's core leadership in two years, and it involved, U.S. officials say, an unusual degree of autonomy by the CIA inside Pakistan.

It is an approach that some U.S. officials say could be used more frequently this year, particularly if a power vacuum results from yesterday's election and associated political tumult. The administration also feels an increased sense of urgency about undermining al-Qaeda before President Bush leaves office, making it less hesitant, said one official familiar with the incident.
Having requested the Pakistani government's official permission for such strikes on previous occasions, only to be put off or turned down, this time the U.S. spy agency did not seek approval. The government of Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf was notified only as the operation was underway, according to the officials, who insisted on anonymity because of diplomatic sensitivities.

This story is total BS! Obama demands total pull out of the U.S. in the Middle East and reduction of the DOD budget! He is against all harsh questioning of possible Muslim radicals.

To believe Obama would hurt or kill or another person is crazy!! He worked in Chicago and has seen enough killing!

Peace is Right!!

Uh, sorry buddy, Obama did say he'd hit in Pakistan without their asking. We know you love the guy, and it is still cool to do that, but ease up, and accept the fact that there are still people Obama would kill.

And by the way, if elected president, I PROMISE you he will kill people. PROMISE. They all do, otherwise the powers that be would never let them get elected.

I wonder who else those missiles killed? Wouldn't be women and children would it? Surely not, the U.S. wouldn't just kill them because they were in the way would it? Well maybe since they would just be collateral damage, like the movie you know.

The current military's "surgical strikes" do a hell of a lot of damage too. It's war and it's never been the answer.

Ahhh, but the thing is that Predator by its very nature doesn't burn nearly enough fuel or upset nearly enough Islamic nations to cause any upward price pressure on oil.

After watching Bush, Rumsfeld and PNACky old Dick Cheney (he of "Oil remains fundamentally a government business." fame) for all of these years, I don't for a minute believe that nailing Osama Bin Laden was ever a high priority.

The only "mission" that was under any pressure to be "accomplished" was the garrisoning of a state within Southwest Asia.

Ugly Americans are in style again? Bush & Obama on the same page internationally? When the CIA and the Pentagon run US foreign relations, why not close down the State Dept & save some $$$ ?

I am a pacifist who strongly believes that killing is wrong. That said, I'll bet most people - if polled - would say they'd prefer an assassination of a "problem" dictator or the like rather than all-out war.

Bush does not agree in most cases, however, because assassination does not adequately return the favors granted him in his improbable run up to the presidency. He owes a lot of people a lot of war-generated funds and he aims to pay off his debts.

The Bush crime family and the Pakistani military have been in cahoots for over
thirty years. We give them Billions in aid and they insure that the Heroine flows
into the CIA drug cartel. It's the Bush Chaos Theory of destruction and despair.

You are so right. The heroin trade is the current cash cow for the CIA and, by crackie, Afghanistan had better not become a stable country far into the future. Turkey and Pakistan would become less than the able help-mates Bush has been promised.

A recent History Channel show about the Taliban and Al-Qaeda spelled it all out plain and simple.

It has already been established with parallel photos of Bin ladin and the man who claimed he was Bin Ladin that the impostor who took credit for the 9/11 attack no more looked like bin Ladin than George Bush.

If Bin Ladin were ever captured alive we'd discover he had nothing to do with 9/11 that's why the Bush Administration allowed him to escape when they had him trapped in northern Afghanistan. What short memories most American's have,

9/11 was a Bush conspiracy to give him an excuse to invade Iraq. ??Hitler did the same thing when he had his own building burned down and blamed it on the Communists. Bush is America's Public Enemy # 1

Every utterance Obama has made on foreign policy demontrates the kind of judgement that has been missing from American policy since before the Cold War.

I don't see how it could objectively be stated that the current POTUS is the leader of the free world. I don't see the free world following Bush like he's their leader. Will the next POTUS be able to reclaim that mantle or is the concept destined to become a relic of history? I believe only Barack Obama will be able to accomplish that.

Obama's idea to go after terrorists and target them inside Pakistan is the right thing to do. Pakistan's government and infrastructure is not reliable because of the corruption that exists there. Notifying the Pakistani government of any actions is the equivalent of taking out a huge ad in the Sunday paper.

There Obama goes again! Peeling more GOP voters and Indies from McCain and making himself a more electable national candidate. Oh and he was against Iraq from the beginning.

He's saying AND doing everything right in my book.

Hillary really should just think about this. Does she want to be a part of any potential damage to the DemParty especially when Obama's really the one responsible for all the enthusiastic activity in the younger (really young) generation and basically the future of said Party?

***p.s. he's not smug looking. he looks tired. i wonder why?
