I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Bush Cia Obama

On the front page of Tuesday's Washington Post was an article detailing how in late January U.S. forces, acting with autonomy inside Pakistan, were able to target and kill Abu Laith al-Libi, a senior al-Qaeda commander.

The strike, which came without the Pakistani government's knowledge and helped eliminate an individual who had long eluded the spy-agency's capture, was an obvious boon in the War on Terror. But the political implications of the operation were just as fascinating.

In August, Sen. Barack Obama had made the argument that, as president, he would target Al Qaeda officials in Pakistan even without the country's acquiescence -- the type of attack that, six months later, proved to be successful.

At the time, Obama was roundly criticized for his remarks, both by his Democratic competitors for the White House and by the Bush administration.

"We think that our approach to Pakistan is not only one that respects the sovereignty of Pakistan, but also is designed so that we are working in cooperation," said then-Press Secretary Tony Snow.

And just one week ago, President Bush himself lambasted Obama's approach to foreign affairs.

"I certainly don't know what he believes in," Bush said on February 10, about Obama. "The only foreign policy thing I remember he said was he's going to attack Pakistan and embrace Ahmadinejad."

To be sure, not everything is known about the extent and execution of the CIA's operation. But, on the surface, it carries similarities to Obama's stated approach towards Pakistan's terrorism problem, the same approach Bush trivialized.

Here is Obama's August 2 statement at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars:

"I understand that President Musharraf has his own challenges... But let me make this clear. There are terrorists holed up in those mountains who murdered 3,000 Americans. They are plotting to strike again. ... If we have actionable intelligence about high-value terrorist targets and President Musharraf will not act, we will."
And here are some excerpts from Tuesday's Washington Post article.
In the predawn hours of Jan. 29, a CIA Predator aircraft flew in a slow arc above the Pakistani town of Mir Ali. The drone's operator, relying on information secretly passed to the CIA by local informants, clicked a computer mouse and sent the first of two Hellfire missiles hurtling toward a cluster of mud-brick buildings a few miles from the town center.

The missiles killed Abu Laith al-Libi, a senior al-Qaeda commander and a man who had repeatedly eluded the CIA's dragnet. It was the first successful strike against al-Qaeda's core leadership in two years, and it involved, U.S. officials say, an unusual degree of autonomy by the CIA inside Pakistan.

It is an approach that some U.S. officials say could be used more frequently this year, particularly if a power vacuum results from yesterday's election and associated political tumult. The administration also feels an increased sense of urgency about undermining al-Qaeda before President Bush leaves office, making it less hesitant, said one official familiar with the incident.
Having requested the Pakistani government's official permission for such strikes on previous occasions, only to be put off or turned down, this time the U.S. spy agency did not seek approval. The government of Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf was notified only as the operation was underway, according to the officials, who insisted on anonymity because of diplomatic sensitivities.

In the video Glenn Beck, of course, claimed Barack said something which he DID NOT SAY.

Obama sounds pretty damn smart to me---using a precision strike against key and critical individuals in the chain of command of Al Qaeda is a much more effective means of dealing with this situation--you don't use the ten thousand pound sledge hammer that is the Army and the rest of the military that totally wrecked an entire country---you use a scalpel to cut out the cancerous growths.
The more I hear of Obama--the more I like his way---perhaps if he gets elected there is indeed hope for this nation!!

Perhaps bush was just unhappy that he was going to smoke a bowl in his hole and the killing thing got in the way.

What lengths journalists go through to make a viable candidate out of novice Obama... He's spent his political career trying to move up to something higher and has spent almost no time learning domestic and foreign policy. (Took his seat in the U.S. Senate in 2005 and instantly launched his presidential exploratory committee.) In debates and many of his on-air interviews, his ignorance is painfully apparent. If it's not in his talking points, he can't answer the question. His campaign manager David Axelrod and speechwriter Ben Rhodes (brother of Fox News VP David Rhodes) are responsible for his positions, and many of them mirror neoconservative stances. For more on this, see the article I've posted at thecityedition.com. Here's a direct link:

What? You don't believe that this makes Barack the best military strategist. He suggested this tactic and yet has no military background. Just "thunk" it up I guess. Therefore we can trust him to make all his military decisions the same way. Shazam, here's the answer...There are a ton of good things about Barack Obama, but articles like this are just absurd.

he also had the "wisdom" and insight to make the right call from the start . . . hillary did not:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjg6_KXYLEI

perhaps, obama is a wiser, more thoughtful and less "blow with the wind" man than hillary.

that's two for two.

and i happen to know for a fact the real deal is just the opposite of what your city edition claims. it's a tactic to confuse -- another dis and dat distraction.

nice try tho trolly

This underscores why the Bush/McCain policy is so soft-on-terror.

It's been almost 7 years since we were attacked and the primary leadership of Al Qaeda is still active and planning just as they were on September 10th 2001.

Obama has the courage to step forward in a Democratic Primary and introduce an idea he was sure to get criticized for: that we should finally cut off the head of the snake and take out the leadership of Al Qaeda.

But McCain would rather are Marines remain beat cops Basra for the next hundred years and we keep borrowing 12 billion a month from the Chinese to pay for it.

Bush's brain synapses that were rendered dead by drug and alcohol abuse for some reason were not included in this report.
Add to that the fact that he's retarded and one can see how his comments might begin to make sense.

It is dangerous to judge him for being stupid. If you want to know stupid, how about the voters who voted this shameless "blueblood" back into office a second time? The first term didn't phase them?

Well, If that was the way Obama meant it I agree. I kept wondering why he (idiot king) didn't do it to Saddaam if he wanted him so bad.

When I watched the debate it did sound like he wanted to go in with the army like we went into Iraq.
I was OK with what he said and anooyed with the criticism... but it was a little hawkish.

I am becoming more practical in my old age. Go in and take the bastard out.
I wish they would get Osama and be done with it.

"Go in and take the bastard out.I wish they would get Osama and be done with it."

Don't you want to see some **PROOF** that he's actually responsible for 9/11? Do you trust the same government that spoke about non-existent yellow-cake uranium from Niger and even more fantastic Iraqi nuclear weapons? Remember, Condi Rice said the US government will show incontrovertible proof within months. We're still waiting. Meanwhile Osama is still on FBI's most wanted list, but, oddly, not for 9/11. The official FBI position is that there is no solid proof he was behind 9/11.
Osama Bin Laden is just a pawn in the neocon game. Benazir Bhutto discovered the truth and was about to reveal it to the world. That's why she was murdered.

I remember getting up that morning, seeing all the horror unfold in front of my eyes on television, and saying, "That's Osama Bin Laden." Nobody had claimed responsibility yet, the government hadn't issued any statements about possible perpetrators, but even I, a lowly citizen, knew it was an Al Qaeda operation. I'm with "accountability" on this one. I wish they'd get Bin Laden and get it over with. Everything, but everything, isn't a vast right-wing conspiracy. Why? The Republicans in charge of my country right now just aren't that smart, that's why.

absolutely.

Clinton and Biden famously attacked him, saying that in foreign matters like that, you should say that you're going to do misslie strikes.

Obama was right on The Iraq War, The Afghanistan War, and on the shaky situation inside Pakistan, and what America's response should be.

He is going to be a great president.

Boadicea nails it.
If ANYone with a 3-digit IQ had been CinC on that day in August, 2001, when the CIA briefer emphasized to the President -- then on vaca at his Texas "ranch" -- that, as the August 6 memo had told him, "Bin Ladin [was] determined to Srike in US," and, for his trouble, was told, "All right. You've covered your ass now" -- ANYone with an IQ above room temp, would have at least tried to stop the plot.
It's only because our mass media are a wholly-owned subsidiary of the same corporatocracy that owns and runs the Cheney/Bush cabal that most Americans don't even know that this happened.
It will take years -- decades -- to get our country back on track, militarily, economically, spiritually... if we can at all.
