David Letterman Makes Fun Of John McCain

Huffington Post   |   February 20, 2008 11:21 AM

Last night David Letterman ripped into septugenarian presidential candidate John McCain. Letterman made a couple quips that could definitely offend the ARRP community. He framed McCain as the stodgy old man that looks "like the old guy at the barber shop," "a Wal-mart greeter," "the guy who is always early for the 'Early Bird Special'," and "the guy at the supermarket who is confused by the automatic doors."

The McCain I saw campaigning in the 2000 primaries was a totally different man from the sad, sick sellout we see before us now. THAT McCain was, it seemed to me both then and now, a principled, honorable, decent, and intelligent man who had already suffered horribly for his service to our country.
Now, after sucking up to the same crypto-fascists who slimed his family with scabrous lies (the whispering campaign the Cheny/Bush cabal ran against McCain in N Carolina); after embracing, literally and figuratively, the very embodiment of evil in our government; and after kowtowing to the very same American-Taliban that he (correctly) called "agents of intolerance" back in 2000... now, not so much.
It's a real, honest-to-God Greek tragedy -- right down to McCain's "tragic flaw:" his ego. If he'd agreed to be Kerry's running mate in '04, I honestly believe the two of them could have had a great run for 8 years, and our country (and the whole world) would be the better for it.
Now, if (as seems likely) McCain loses to Obama or Hillary, he'll have to spend the rest of his life knowing that he sold out everything he once stood for... for nothing.
With all his $, power, and trophy-wife, I dont envy the guy.

Agreed. McCain seems to have had a stroke. The Whole Botox rumor is also good cover for his slack facial muscles. I feel sorry for him, but I don't want him as president.

General mental and physical fitness SHOULD be an argument for elected office.

Let's see McCain's medical and mental fitness results. Let's see if he has had a stroke.

Obama's too, but I trust he's healthy and sharp.

An ugly reminder that ageism like sexism is still widely tolerated and even applauded in the media (in this case literally) while racism fortunately no longer is. As for those commenting here in favour of Letterman's bit don't let your dislike for McCain blind you to vicious "humour" that comes not only at his expense but at that of a steadily increasing, and therefore increasingly important, part of the population.

Oh, lighten up. If we "boomers" can't laugh at ourselves we're in trouble. You can make fun of my age--my weight, not so much.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 08:58 PM on 02/21/2008

McCain isn't a boomer. He's not even a "war baby."
He was born during the depression. Remember that?
Oh yeah, before your time. Before everyone's time.
It's dishonest to imply that McC is a boomer.

OK. My mistake. He is closer to my mother's age than to mine. The man is 71 years old. Yikes.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 10:37 PM on 02/21/2008

Wow! These comments are downright nasty. What's wrong with you people! If Letterman took after blacks, gays, (name your minority) you'd probably twitter but would not lay it on the way you are with the age thing.
It's not McCain's age that's the issue it's his policy positions, war rhetoric, point of view etc.
Everyone needs a big time attitude change... this includes those already 'old' and those who will be old (with a little luck). There's no reason people can't be vigorous and healthy way into old age.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 05:08 PM on 02/21/2008

Yes, but McCain is neither vigorous nor particularly healthy. He still reminds me of Fire Marshall Bill, who was in fact only in his late 20s or early 30s.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 06:46 PM on 02/21/2008

I can't look at McCain without thinking of Fire Marshall Bill.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 02:34 PM on 02/21/2008

We already had a President in the 80's who had Alzheimer's and his wife did all the thinking for him. We don't need McCain!

I have the misfortune of presently living in SARASOTA, FL, so I have become something of an ageist. I just have a small worry that there re too many old boomers around the US with time on there hands and few brain cells who will vote for McCain. And by the way.rencently i find a fuuny web~~SenoirWoo .com~~ It's a site for successful boomer singles to mingle.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 10:42 PM on 02/20/2008

You posted the same thing on the previous page under the name "Tallest". My worry is that young people won't show up in November and McCain will win by default. By the way dear, when you reach boomer age, you won't be so eager to dismiss a whole age group.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 07:34 AM on 02/21/2008

Wasn't it a Boomer who coined the phrase, "Don't trust anyone under 30"?

It seems in the end you all DID turn into your parents!

"John McCain"s relationship with a female lobbyist underscores a paradox: Even as he embraces high ethical standards, his confidence in his own integrity sometimes seems to blind him to potential conflicts of interest."

Let's take a look at what we have to vote for right now: #1 A Guy who thinks the World is 6,000 Years Old! #2 A Guy who is 6,000 Years Old! #3 A Woman whose Husband cheated on her 6,000 times #4 An Idealistic Young Black Guy who will bring at least 6,000,000 new Voters to the Political process! I'm for the Black Guy!

Forgive me if I find it ironic that the party which spent the last two terms sending our young men to their graves in Iraq can do no better than to pick an old man ready for the grave to succeed Bush. What are they thinking?

Is McCain a sad metaphor for a dying party or what? I though old age was supposed to be more wise and not so senile. Let McCain sound the Clapper for the GOP. His candidacy is lights out for the fascist right. Good night, John Boy.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 06:08 PM on 02/20/2008

"What are they thinking?"

They want to ensure the old man takes a lot more young men to the grave with him. That's the only way they can be satisfied that the country is sufficiently "patriotic". It's called human sacrifice.

And where does McCain's money come from?

Less well-known is that she is chairwoman of Hensley, the nation's third-largest distributor of Anheuser-Busch (BUD, news, msgs) products. She also controls the McCain family portfolio, which is estimated at between $36.6 million and $53.4 million.

Sen. McCain reports his Navy pension of $57,000 as income but doesn't report any significant assets. Most of the family's wealth is tied up in Hensley, based in Arizona, as well as in accounts and trusts in the names of Cindy and the couple's children.

Meanwhile, in early 1994 Gosinski filed a wrongful termination lawsuit against McCain, which he told her he would settle for $250,000. In April 1994, Dowd requested that Maricopa County officials investigate Gosinski for extortion. At this point, the Phoenix New Times was preparing a negatively-cast story about the whole affair and was about to publish it. Cindy McCain pre-empted this by publicly revealing her past addiction, stating she hoped it would give fellow drug addicts courage in their struggles: "Although my conduct did not result in compromising any missions of AVMT, my actions were wrong, and I regret them."

A flurry of press attention followed, including charges by Gosinski that she had asked him to lie concerning her drug use when the McCains were applying to adopt their baby from Bangladesh and statements by past AVMT employees that Gosinski had once threatened to blackmail her.

A few weeks after her announcement, the Variety Club of Arizona canceled its Humanitarian of the Year award dinner in her honor citing poor ticket sales. In the end, both Gosinski's lawsuit and the extortion investigation against him were dropped. AVMT concluded its activities in 1995.

And the love story behind it all.

McCain was still married and living with his wife in 1979 while, according to The New York Times' Nicholas Kristof, "aggressively courting a 25-year-old woman who was as beautiful as she was rich." McCain divorced his wife, who had raised their three children while he was imprisoned in Vietnam, then launched his political career with his new wife's family money.

First there's the alcoholic president and now they propose a drug addict first lady -- this is the best the GOP has to offer up.

Providing you more information on the candidates and their families and people in glass houses who may throw stones.

In 1989, Cindy McCain became addicted to opioid painkillers such as Percocet and Vicodin. She later attributed her addiction to pain following two spinal surgeries for ruptured discs as well as emotional stress during her husband's entanglement in the Keating Five scandal of that time, which also involved her role as a bookkeeper who had difficulty finding receipts of Keating-related expenses. The addiction progressed to the point where she resorted to stealing drugs from her own AVMT. During 1992, Tom Gosinski, the director of government and international affairs for AVMT, discovered her drug theft. Subsequently in 1992, McCain's parents staged an intervention to force her to get help; she told her husband about her problem, attended a drug treatment facility, began outpatient sessions, and ended her three years of addiction; a hysterectomy in 1993 resolved her back pain. In January 1993, McCain terminated Gosinski's employment on grounds of budgetary reasons. In spring 1993, Gosinski tipped off the Drug Enforcement Administration to investigate McCain's drug theft. Her activities violated federal statutes, so a federal inves
