Last night David Letterman ripped into septugenarian presidential candidate John McCain. Letterman made a couple quips that could definitely offend the ARRP community. He framed McCain as the stodgy old man that looks "like the old guy at the barber shop," "a Wal-mart greeter," "the guy who is always early for the 'Early Bird Special'," and "the guy at the supermarket who is confused by the automatic doors."

Forgive me if I find it ironic that the party which spent the last two terms sending our young men to their graves in Iraq can do no better than to pick an old man ready for the grave to succeed Bush. What are they thinking?

Is McCain a sad metaphor for a dying party or what? I though old age was supposed to be more wise and not so senile. Let McCain sound the Clapper for the GOP. His candidacy is lights out for the fascist right. Good night, John Boy.

"What are they thinking?"

They want to ensure the old man takes a lot more young men to the grave with him. That's the only way they can be satisfied that the country is sufficiently "patriotic". It's called human sacrifice.

I have the misfortune of presently living in SARASOTA, FL, so I have become something of an ageist. I just have a small worry that there re too many old boomers around the US with time on there hands and few brain cells who will vote for McCain.

And where does McCain's money come from?

Less well-known is that she is chairwoman of Hensley, the nation's third-largest distributor of Anheuser-Busch (BUD, news, msgs) products. She also controls the McCain family portfolio, which is estimated at between $36.6 million and $53.4 million.

Sen. McCain reports his Navy pension of $57,000 as income but doesn't report any significant assets. Most of the family's wealth is tied up in Hensley, based in Arizona, as well as in accounts and trusts in the names of Cindy and the couple's children.

Meanwhile, in early 1994 Gosinski filed a wrongful termination lawsuit against McCain, which he told her he would settle for $250,000. In April 1994, Dowd requested that Maricopa County officials investigate Gosinski for extortion. At this point, the Phoenix New Times was preparing a negatively-cast story about the whole affair and was about to publish it. Cindy McCain pre-empted this by publicly revealing her past addiction, stating she hoped it would give fellow drug addicts courage in their struggles: "Although my conduct did not result in compromising any missions of AVMT, my actions were wrong, and I regret them."

A flurry of press attention followed, including charges by Gosinski that she had asked him to lie concerning her drug use when the McCains were applying to adopt their baby from Bangladesh and statements by past AVMT employees that Gosinski had once threatened to blackmail her.

A few weeks after her announcement, the Variety Club of Arizona canceled its Humanitarian of the Year award dinner in her honor citing poor ticket sales. In the end, both Gosinski's lawsuit and the extortion investigation against him were dropped. AVMT concluded its activities in 1995.

And the love story behind it all.

McCain was still married and living with his wife in 1979 while, according to The New York Times' Nicholas Kristof, "aggressively courting a 25-year-old woman who was as beautiful as she was rich." McCain divorced his wife, who had raised their three children while he was imprisoned in Vietnam, then launched his political career with his new wife's family money.

Users. People with no conscious.

First there's the alcoholic president and now they propose a drug addict first lady -- this is the best the GOP has to offer up.

Providing you more information on the candidates and their families and people in glass houses who may throw stones.

In 1989, Cindy McCain became addicted to opioid painkillers such as Percocet and Vicodin. She later attributed her addiction to pain following two spinal surgeries for ruptured discs as well as emotional stress during her husband's entanglement in the Keating Five scandal of that time, which also involved her role as a bookkeeper who had difficulty finding receipts of Keating-related expenses. The addiction progressed to the point where she resorted to stealing drugs from her own AVMT. During 1992, Tom Gosinski, the director of government and international affairs for AVMT, discovered her drug theft. Subsequently in 1992, McCain's parents staged an intervention to force her to get help; she told her husband about her problem, attended a drug treatment facility, began outpatient sessions, and ended her three years of addiction; a hysterectomy in 1993 resolved her back pain. In January 1993, McCain terminated Gosinski's employment on grounds of budgetary reasons. In spring 1993, Gosinski tipped off the Drug Enforcement Administration to investigate McCain's drug theft. Her activities violated federal statutes, so a federal investigation was conducted. McCain's defense team, led by Washington lawyer John Dowd, secured an agreement with the U.S. Attorney's office that limited her punishment to financial restitution and enrollment in a diversion program, without anything being made public.

As a nearly-62-year-old, card-carrying AARP member, I am NOT offended at all.

Obama will have the good sense (I hope) not to make an issue of McInsane's age, but it definitely will be an issue anyway. McInsane is the fitting icon for the GOP -- a tired old man representing a tired old party with tired (and discredited) old ideas. Obama will maul him.

62? your a spring chicken compared to Mccain, he makes dick cheney and george bush look young, he's practically one foot in the grave. I just don't think it would be responsible to vote for a man as old as Mccain, by the time he finished two terms he would be in his eighties and that's just reckless, to be in a job that stressfull at his age. In fact its about time for him to retire from politics completely.

******BREAKING NEWS******

John McCain, aka Senator "Hothead" has fallen and he can't get up.

Asked for comment, the battle scarred veteran who Republicans called "crazy" and accused of having an "illegitimate black baby" in 2000 was heard to remark, "I've fallen, and I can't get up!"

Letterman is on his game. It's about time he ribbed old man McCain who deserves the ageism. Any fool who was a Nam POW and is still a war monger is a sap for the silly set or a fool for the fowl.

Rather than run for President, McCain should check into a rest home, go to bed and take his meds. Thinking he can win the White House and maintain the GOP fascist status quo is pure senility.

Real funny!! So far McCain is acting like the old confused guy. First it is illegal and torture, then votes against banning it, against Bush's tax breaks then wants to continue them. Then accuses Obama of wanting to bomb Pakistan which is a lie. Then talks about staying in Iraq for 100 years when the country wants out, so much for representing the majority of U.S. citizens. McCain is just like Bush now, he will say anything even if it contradicts what he just said weeks ago. Either McCain is just a flip flopping liar or he is another crusty old alzheimers guy. Not tryin to be funny, but maybe he suffered too much brain damage when he was a prisoner and now it is showing up.

Bullshit - Here's your fucking "war hero":

The fact is, in exchange for better medical treatment, McCain violated this code four days after being captured on Oct. 26, 1967. In a U.S. News and World Report interview dated May 14, 1973, two months after he was released, McCain admitted that he exchanged military information in exchange for spending six weeks in a hospital normally reserve for North Vietnamese Military officers.

U.S. government records less than two weeks after he was taken to the hospital, Hanoi's press began quoting specific military information, including the name of the aircraft carrier on which McCain had been based, information about the location of rescue ships and the order of which his attack was supposed to take place. McCain continued to collaborate with the Communists after he recovered from his injuries. He did a number of propaganda broadcasts that were aimed at destroying the moral of American servicemen fighting in the jungles of South Vietnam, On June 4, 1969, a U.S. Wire Service story reported one of McCain's broadcasts.

The service reported "Hanoi has aired a broadcast in which the pilot son of the U.S. Commander in the Pacific, Adm. John McCain purportedly admits to having bombed civilian targets in North Vietnam and praised medical treatment he has received since being taken prisoner."

McCain admits to talking with numerous high-ranking North Vietnamese leaders, including General Vo Nguyen Giap, their Minister of Defense.

Perhaps these are some of the reasons why John McCain hip been so instrumental in discounting any suggestion that live prisoners of war still languish in Southeast Asia. It certainly does explain to me why he traveled to Hanoi in May of 1993 with soon-to-be Ambassador to Vietnam Pete Peterson, and convinced the Communist leadership to agree that they would NEVER MAKE PUBLIC THEIR INTERROGATION FILES OF AMERICAN POWs.
