Last night David Letterman ripped into septugenarian presidential candidate John McCain. Letterman made a couple quips that could definitely offend the ARRP community. He framed McCain as the stodgy old man that looks "like the old guy at the barber shop," "a Wal-mart greeter," "the guy who is always early for the 'Early Bird Special'," and "the guy at the supermarket who is confused by the automatic doors."

All true. But it's "Wal-Mart greeter" not "Wallmart greater." Fast typing is good, you guys, but accuracy is good, too. LOL

I have no intentions of voting for McCain (I'm a Baracklican) but I have great admiration for John McCain's years of service to this country; as a soldier and a Senator.

Letterman's comments are borderline and I hope this doesn't become routine for him. McCain deserves better. His service deserves better.

It's been obvious to me for sometime that Letterman is a Clintonista, but I will suppose he will back the Demo nominee regardless.

GO BARACK!

Letterman is an equal-opportunity skewer. McCain is not the first nor the last, and like Leno, politians are a favorite target. I think it is healthy to the body politic for comedians to poke fun at the politicians...we need to get over the idea that they are off limits. I mean the politicians skewer each other at these stupid press-politics roasts, including Bush's absurd skit about looking for WMD's and Rove's (pansy-like) dancing with Greg Whats-his-name.
Is age off limits? Well, if John McCain thinks he is young enough to be president, how is making fun of his age going to change things. He is putting himself up there, no body has a gun to his head.
As Truman said, "If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen."
Just my guess, I think John would feel flattered to be skewered by Letterman, but that is just my guess and anybody can disagree.

McCain comments on his dustup with Obama on federal funding on their campaign, claiming Obama is reneging on the [actually non-existent] "pledge":
"There's nothing to talk about," McCain said today. "What's there to talk about? People have made a commitment to take public financing. There's nothing to talk about. We either keep our word or we don't keep our word. I intend to keep my word to the American people."
Am I the only one who thinks Mac sounds like he is ready to blow a gasket here? The anger! He cannot discuss this rationally but goes ballistic. "There is nothing to talk about."
OK, we are faced with a national crisis, and we need to talk to the other side to avert all-out war. McCain feels his manly pride is at stake and tells the other leader "There is nothing to talk about."
That legendary temper is not a myth folks

If you really think McCain will stick to public financing, you got another think coming. There never was and never will be a Republican keeping this pledge, no matter if they introduced it themselves.

Show me the pledge!

My issue with McCain has nothing to do with his age. I can think of people even older than McCain who would make great Presidents. What bothers me about McCain is the age of his ideas. He might have made a good President in the 1890s but this is the 21st centruy and we need new idas, new ways of looking at things. We face new problems that can't just be "bombed" away (unless, of course, one WANTS to create more terrorists, in which case carpet bombing will work quite well--ask the Khmer Rouge about that!). McCain looks like the distant, dead past. I'm voting for the furure.

This is true - but his "old" ideas thrive in every arena - not just in military options. He's a relic - a dinasaur. Old Privileged White Christian Males aren't necessarily the best this country has to offer anymore.

HOWEVER . . . he DOES often seem confused and I find that disturbing.

Perhaps the re-PIG-licans have found their Ronald Reagan after all . . . .

John McCain/Charlton Heston in 2008!

Heston can explain things to McCain when the latter gets confused.

Don't get mad at me. I respect both men as great actors.

Even during the early republican debates, one of the conservative pundits quiped that he should have been given a cane so he could yell "Get off my lawn!".

Hope Oh-bomb-us goes after people like Letterman and makes the silly f*cks pay for all the change they harp on.
Letterman has never been funny. We just have a stupid populace.

Your illiterate post couldn't better illustrate the notion of a stupid populace! What a hoot! With McCain touching himself and drooling at the thought of more wars, bombing Iran and 100 years of occupation in Iraq, it's no surprise that half-wits from the Right are using terms like Oh-bomb-us. Yes, that's right whippingpost, you're a half-wit if you think anyone is buying into that crap. I know this shit has been working for the radical rightwing extremists for years; up is down, black is white, left is right, right is wrong... and stupid Americans have swallowed it hook line and sinker. But the tide is turning in America. REAL Americans, the true patriots, have seen through the bullshit and are demanding change. They want their country back. The lunatic fringe has been running things long enough. With the economy in the crapper, gas at record prices, oil companies reaping record profits, a fucking mess in the Middle East that is creating more terrorists by the day... that's what the lunatic fringe has brought us. Bin Laden and the Taliban regrouping in Pakistan, while America props up the military dictatorship there with arms and your tax dollars... that's what the lunatic fringe has brought us. The Bush years will go down as one of the worst periods in American history, and John McCain is part of that legacy of failure. He's a Bushbot, a cheerleader for a lost cause, a doddering old warmonger who is out of step with the American people. The maverick has joined the lunatic fringe. He's become irrelevant. He's a dangerous deluded old man, living in the past. Bomb bomb bomb, bomb Iran. That was supposed to be funny! The death of innocent civilians is the punchline to a joke! And you think that using a term like Oh-Bomb-Us is going to deflect attention away from the incompetent old man with his finger on the button? Not only are you a liar, and a propagandist, you're as stupid as they come!

"The lunatic fringe has been running things long enough."

Mega-fucking-DITTOES, brother (or sister)!

If there's any silver lining in the disastrous Smirky McChimp (p)residency, it's that it has demonstrated the complete and utter bankruptcy -- morally, ethically, spiritually and pragmatically -- of right-wing ideas in every sphere, from economics to foreign policy. The Repukelican Party has been relegated to the margins and hopefully will remain there for the next 30 years.

In all fairness, John McCain still looks healthier and more robust than does Keith Richards. Then again, Keith Richards worked for a living his entire life.

McCain has served this country his entire adult life. Keith Richards has partied his entire adult life. I don't see the comparison.

I tend to look at that as MCCAIN has lived off the country and the taxpayer his whole life. However, his father WAS a hero.

Since he came home from Vietnam, what has McCain done to "serve" his country? I'd say the country has served him ... and pretty damn well.

lighten up.
Letterman is doing a thing called comedy, part of his show includes a monologue, which usually consists of tedious but nevertheless funny jokes about everything and everyone.

Letterman's monologue is usually the funniest part of his show. Many, if not most, of the bits he does (Know Your Cuts of Meat?) simply aren't funny, as evidenced by the audience's polite chuckles. As for McCain, his age is fair game - just like Hillary's pantsuits and Huckabee's squirrel diet. When these people enter the public arena, virtually nothing is sacred except family (who aren't running for the office).

I am an old guy and McCain makes me feel young again. He looks like death warmed over.

Uses "My Friend" way to many times. Pounds the podium or lecturn like a dictator and never smiles unless he see's a camera on him.

Never in my wildest dream could I vote for a creep like McCain

He was an automatic into the Naval Academy. He graduated 5th from the bottom. He was elevated in status above more deserving navy graduates and personnel BECAUSE both his dad and his grandfather were Admirals and his father was a real naval sea hero. Johnny boy didn't really earn anything and yes, his playboy status also is abit like dubyas. Affirmative action...Now that is funny.

It's not that McCain is an old guy; it's his ideas that are the problem. I know a woman who just turned 90; I've known her all my life. Since my own grandparents died when I was a baby she is like my grandmother. Her worldview is progressive and current and I enjoy talking with her for hours.

One of her daughters became a fundamentalist Christian, which put a great strain on her marriage of 29 years; now her 3 children are avoiding her because she is simply driving them crazy. One of the ironies are that many of the members of her church, which she thought of as friends and counted on them for support now ignore her because of the divorce, go figure.

Without a doubt, McCain’s greatest asset, other than his truly impressive and bottomless collection of clichés, has to be his wife Cindy. She simply stands there tirelessly with that amazing catatonic smile of hers, occasionally turning head to right and then to left and back again, a kind of highly colorful lithographed two-dimensional cardboard cutout with a head-swiveling feature. But then she did come out with that stuff about how proud she is of her country and always has been unlike - hint, hint, you fill in the blanks - certain other wives we know. Oh, God, but it would be a delight to have Michelle and Cindy debate! You know, stand up for their respective husbands and all. Cindy would win hands down almost without saying a word. She wouldn’t have to do anything except stand there and smile and smile and smile and maybe once in a while say, “My country right or wrong...my country right or wrong...my country...” while poor Michelle after a few hours or so would simply collapse from her non-stop attempt to fill the vacuum.
