Four Days From Relaunch, SNL Still Has No Obama

If ti's Wednesday, that means that the cast and crew of Saturday Night Live are halfway through a frantic, round-the-clock week of prep for this Saturday's return to the airwaves, the first of four straight shows meant to catch SNL up after three and a half months derailed by the writers' strike. As we wrote earlier this week, this week's show is an important one for SNL, catching it up on the conversation and, hopefully, returning it to the forefront in an extraordinary, history-making primary season.

As of this writing, though, there's one thing missing: SNL has still not found anyone to play Barack Obama. When we asked on Monday, a show representative was noncommittal; late yesterday, we were told that no decision would be made about an Obama character until sometime tomorrow — two days before the show. According to USA Today, SNL executive producer Lorne Michaels has been auditioning people both from the cast as well as outside contenders, with some challenges. Back in the fall, castmember Kenan Thompson had been rumored to be attempting to shed pounds for the part, but that never translated to the screen. (Thmopson is one of two cast members of color — the other is Maya Rudolph, has previously played a skinny black male character, "Time-Traveling Scott Joplin"). Michaels told USA Today that finding the right person to play Obama has been a particular challenge: "Finding a way to get people to laugh at him is complicated right now." (This was not a problem for the actual Obama, who made a graceful and well-received guest appearance on last show before the strike, yelling out the show's signature opening line, "Live from New York, it's Saturday Night!"

SNL returns to air on Saturday, Feb. 23rd with host (and alum) Tina Fey and musical guest Carrie Underwood, plus potential cameos that we predicted earlier this week.

May I recommend Barack Obama to swing by and play himself. It might be worth the effort even at the loss of a little sleep.

Neither Chevy Chase nor Dan Aykroyd looked anything like Gerald Ford or Jimmy Carter. In fact, Aykroyd did a great Carter even when Aykroyd had a mustache.

But of course, in those days, hard as it is to imagine now, SNL was funny, relevant, and important.

Today, SNL reminds me of when a version of Creedence Clearwater Revival tried going on tour without John Fogerty, i.e., bullshit.

I must be young cause I dont know what a John Fogerty is.

They should just have a series of sketches detailing their troubles finding a comedian to play Obama. Much like the classic casting sketch of the Star Wars with Kevin Spacey imitating Jack Lemon trying out fo the Chewy role. They should have all of their current cast running through any and all characters they actually have (which isn't alot) ala the American Idol reject shows....They can also bring in a few new people and cameos to try to fill the spot. Or they could just hire me!!

You've nailed it. That Star Wars casting sketch was hilarious. They also did a similar one for Pulp Fiction in which Norm MacDonald as Burt Reynolds kept stopping to ask Tarantino if the whole picture was about burgers.

SNL is so weak anymore. They are too right wing and won't risk offending the big media companies and high powered politicians to be pointed and funny like they were in the early days.
Mad does better political humor then SNL. They trashed Kucinich and Edwards and showed favoritism toward Hillary in a recent skit.
Only TV Fun house has the guts to poke at BuSh.
The BuSh administration, RepubliCONS and the christian extremists are such great fodder for humor and yet SNL wimps out.
Only when a good musical guest is on do i watch.

Jordan Carlos is a good enough guess, Rachel, but the betting money seems to be on Donald Glover, who tried out his Obama impersonation Tuesday night at a NYC comedy show and writes for 30 Rock, which practically makes him part of the family already. I'm covering this all on my site, The Comic's Comic, conveniently located at http://www.thecomicscomic.com!

That guy in the picture looks nothing like Obama. Hey, I have an idea -- let's get Obama himself to do it.

HA!

Darrell Hammond played Jesse Jackson well--how about one of the white guys? They seem to have several skinny white guys available.

I wonder if Maya Rudolph could pull off playing him. She is very talented.

I am no comedy writer but it would be funny if Obama turned into a woman and Hillary got all pissed.

And this is important WHY???

SNL is a tired shadow of it's former self. Lorne and Co. would be best served, like Hillary, to exit gracefully.
