Mccain Versus Obama

"Sen. John McCain of Arizona, close to clinching the GOP nomination, called Sen. Barack Obama 'naive' today and...blasted him for advocating a bombing of Al Qaeda hide-outs in Pakistan," the Los Angeles Times reports.

"The best idea is not to broadcast what you're going to do, that's naive," said McCain, who also questioned the very notion of "bombing Pakistan without their permission." ...

In a conference call with reporters to respond, Obama foreign policy advisor Susan Rice said that McCain was "misrepresenting and distorting Barack Obama's positions" and argued that the Democrat "never suggested bombing an ally."

"McCain promises more war in Iraq," she said. "Obama will end the war in Iraq and focus on terrorists in Afghanistan."

TNR: McCain Is Lying: Jonathan Chait writes for The New Republic:

Last night John McCain accused Barack Obama of, among other things, having "once suggested bombing our ally, Pakistan." This is a lie. ... There is nothing in Obama's speech, or any other Obama speech, about "bombing" Pakistan. Both implicitly and explicitly, he called for small, Special Operations-type incursions. ...

Meanwhile, you know who is coming closer to "bombing an ally"? The Bush administration, whose determined prosecution of the war on terror McCain continues to tout. The Washington Post reported -- as it happens, the same day McCain made his smear -- that the CIA launched Hellfire missiles at an al Qaeda operative in Pakistan. As the Post noted, "Having requested the Pakistani government's official permission for such strikes on previous occasions, only to be put off or turned down, this time the U.S. spy agency did not seek approval."

So, to review: Obama did not call for bombing Pakistan, ever. Meanwhile the Bush administration is undertaking air attacks against targets in Pakistan. Is this wildly irresponsible? I suppose you could make that case. But McCain isn't interested in an argument about the merits of striking al Qaeda against the costs of undermining Pervez Musharraf. He's just interested in lying about what Obama said in order to portray him as a foreign policy novice.

Matthew Yglesias has much more from the Obama campaign call with Susan Rice:

[O]n experience there's a three-pronged attack. First, Obama does have experience, with Rice citing the fact that he authored "crucial legislation to secure the United States from the threat of loose nuclear materials" and serves on committees and subcommittees dealing with foreign relations, veterans affairs, and homeland security. Second, this means that Obama has actually "acquired more traditional washington foreign policy experience" than most presidents including Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, and Jimmy Carter (Carter in fact served on a nuclear sub and I'm told this gave him a better understanding of nuclear issues than presidents before or after).

Third, there's more to life than being a prisoner of DC conventional wisdom -- "McCain, like Donald Rumsfeld and Dick Cheney may have years of Washington experience" but they've all made "flawed judgments and as a consequence we're less safe." In a crucial point, Rice observed (emphasis added) that a McCain administration would be "very much a continuation and intensification of the failed Bush policy, remaining in Iraq indefinitely not investing adequately in Afghanistan."

Time's Joe Klein asks, "McCain -- Soft on Al Qaeda?"

"Sen. John McCain of Arizona, close to clinching the GOP nomination, called Sen. Barack Obama 'naive' today and...blasted him for advocating a bombing of Al Qaeda hide-outs in Pakistan," the Los Angel...

This coming from the nutcase that wants to bomb Iran? Give me a break. He should keep his mouth shut. McCain's tendency to bomb is so much nuttier than Obama's.

And McCain wants to bomb Iran. He even sang about it as if bombing another country is fun. As for Pakistan, everyone knows they've been helping al qaida and harboring bin Laden. Bush once said that anyone harboring terrorists would be treated as terrorist. He seems to have forgotten that pledge. At least Obama knows that Musharef is a dictator who can't be trusted.

Huffpo is strangely silent about goings on in the Bush White House with all the political maneuvering in the primaries. I expect this to continue until the election and then the topic of discussion will be Bush's legacy, until he is out of office. The people deserve to have their memories cleaned of the dirt and ill air. It's not good for their pretty minds. If anyone's interested--http://www.counterpunch.org/. Paul Craig Roberts' article today gives some insight on why this criminal needs to stay the topic of conversation amongst good Americans who care about democracy. Impeachment should be a topic of conversation until it's done. Look at Mr. Roberts' bio at the bottom of the page and know that he is not a partisan hack; if he were he'd be in this administration.

What a sad creature McCain has become. In 2000, he allowed both his wife and child to be smeared by Bush. Then to add insult to injury, the man embraced the very person who leveled those attacks. No one should be surprised by the willingness of a Republican to lie about anything. If the last eight years held a lesson, it's that these people can't be trusted.

I'm not repeating lies from a tabloid. This is from the NYT op-ed last week:

"I disagree with Mr. McCain on Iraq, taxes, abortion and almost every other major issue. He has a nasty temper, which isn’t ideal for the hand holding a nuclear trigger. For a man running partly on biography, he treated his first wife, Carol, poorly. And one of the meanest put-downs in modern political history was a savage joke that Mr. McCain publicly related about Chelsea Clinton when she was 18 years old; it was inexcusable."

While the dems are still f@@king around, McCain is now running the General Election.

Have you never listened to McCain's speeches....I live in Arizona and he has definitely said that he believes that we will have to be in Iraq for 100 years...just think....your children, grandchildren & great grandchildren can all have fought in the same war...does that sound like fun to you????? I hope not....and McCain wants to now occupy Iran...do we have enough Military people for that???

I live in Arizona & McCain has done this kind of nonsense for decades! He actually believes that being a POW gave him foreign relations experience???? I think that like most POW's...being tortured, probably warped his thinking to a certain extent, which is understandable, but his temper(which is volatile) is just not compatible with the office of president!
And he should never be president-ever!!!

He just wants revenge.... on the whole world... because he's never evolved into a civilized human being. Something snapped in McCain's brain a looooong time ago.... and nothing short of a straight jacket is gonna fix it.

McCain is also my Senator and he frankly scares me. I will vote against him at all costs.

When he says he is the only one who knows how to grow the army, and how we need to take action against Iran (have you noticed how much bigger and more populated Iran is?!), all I can see is a draft.

My grandfather was special forces in Vietnam and couldn't stand McCain after he armed his missiles before taking off and blew up that aircraft carrier.

I cannot WAIT to watch Obama and McCain debate. But Obama had better be on top of McCain who is notorious for spouting a lie giving little time to respond. He did it to Romney and he will definitely do it to a Democrat.
