"Sicko" director Michael Moore jokes that Fidel Castro would be a "ratings grabber" at Sunday night's Academy Awards show.

Moore's Oscar-nominated documentary on the health-care industry concludes with a trip to Cuba, where he seeks care for a group of 9/11 responders who have experienced health problems. They are greeted with open arms at a Havana hospital and given what appears to be top-notch care that they could not get in the United States.

I think there is merit in ending the strains between our countries. Castro is certainly not as bad as Mao and Brezhnev and the other Communists we were quick to do business with. Don't forget, a dollar spent at Wal-Mart goes straight to Communist China so we can make accommodations with Cuba. We can insinuate democracy through the marketplace to Cuba. Countries that trade get along and if they feel secure they can lighten up.

I notice a bunch of typical whining conservatives.

Here's an editorial cartoon to make you smile (or not):

I admire Senor Fidel Castro Ruz. I cannot say that about any US president except John Kennedy.
US propaganda against Cuba reminds me of the old adage " The learned and soft spoken are always crushed by the numbers of the dumb and ignorant"

Wow you are so ignorant it actually scares me a bit.

Castro is better than ALL US presidents except JFK. (the man that tried to kill Castro...irony?)

You clearly no nothing about Castro and what he has done to his people. Don't take it from the State Dept. Go out and find your own source of indep. information. It's everywhere.

If you really want to make a claim that Castro is a swell guy then you are going to be embarrased.

Great idea! Of course Michael, it will destroy the very small amount of respect you have built up with middle America. Well, that was never what it was about.

I love ya, guy. You're a REAL American hero. But I wish you'd lose some weight so you will be around a LONG time.

I suspect Castro is too smart to travel to a country that supports torture and which has a history of resentment towards ex-colonies that have won their independence.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:37 PM on 02/20/2008

Wow your post is so devoid of fact it's laughable.

Castro has been using torture for 50 years. Don't beleive it? Check it out for yourself. So using your logic and assumptions about America Castro should fit right in.

Of course even Bush has not come close to denying Americans the rights that Cubans can only dream of.

But go ahead and praise the ruthless thug dictator. It only exposes what a feeble minded person you are.

If Michael wants to stir the shit- this is one way to do it, it's also a stupid approach since he loses credibility by propping a murderous tyrant as some sort of hero.

As and unapologetic liberal- I simply don't get why so many want to praise Castro and then denounce other equally nefarious figures- I mean, even the sensible Robert Scheer has a soft spot for the Cuban megalomaniac- what gives?

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Michael Moore, views on Castro aside, is a great american who is trying to turn this country off it's self-destructive course,

but he needs a gastric bypass ASAP. ....seriously.

It's not that Cuba has superior health care, it's that they provide it to those who need it regardless of their ability to pay.
I had a minor emergency recently that required a visit to the ER in Fountain Valley, California. They spent 2 hours clearing my insurance before they would help me. When they did, the emergency had passed, with very little help on their part. But I'm sure that $4,000 tab for keeping an eye on me won't be negotiable.
Socialized medicine is long overdue in the United States.

WE need alot of help in our health care in this country but don't throw Cuba or Canada in our faces. I am not sure that socialized medicine is the answer either. But truly we do need to have it overhauled. The ugly truth is that we have the best care you can get for those who can afford the insurance. Where IS the greed please tell..that is what is driving the insurance companies of which there are way too many looking for way to much. And there is waste in the hospital field.

Yeah, don't cloud the issue by referring to countries that actually do have a medical scheme that works. Who wants to live in a country where poor people are given the same right to medical care as the rich!!!

(I'm so glad I live in one of those countries you don't want thrown in your face.)

Who do think would do a better job:

Someone who stands to make a profit and earn repeat business...

or someone who will get their wage/salary regardless if the level of service was deemed satisfactory or not?

The first one is someone who is a business owner or works in the private sector. The second example is someone who works in the DMV. Sorry, that's not who I want making medical decisions for me.

PROFIT IS NOT EVIL. IT IS WHAT MAKES US ACCOUNTABLE FOR PERFORMING A SERVICE OR SELLING A PRODUCT.

If their systems work better than our system - which they do - then they are an answer.

Really, *all* we need to do is get insurance companies out of the way and pay the care-givers directly, and we will probably solve about 90% of the current system's problems. I don't care if it's called "socialized medicine". It can be called "fried chicken" for all I care.

Who said Cuba has the best health care in the world? I watched sicko and don't remember him making that claim. In fact he's praised HIS health care being top notch since he's in the writer's guild. Can people stop dumbing down to make a point. How is it that intelligent people constantly keep misinterpreting things, seems to be happening all the time these days.
