"Plagiarism-gate," or whatever moniker is given to revelations that Sen. Barack Obama borrowed other politician's words, continued on Wednesday, despite evidence that suggests all candidates -- not just the Illinois Democrat -- are guilty of the alleged crime.

Late on Tuesday evening, Sen. Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign sent out an article written by The Washington Post's Dana Milbank titled "Claims of Rhetoric-Pilfering Pile Up on Obama." The piece, playing off of an earlier report that Obama had taken lines from his friend and surrogate, Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, included new evidence of the senator's "borrowing problem."

There was, however, one problem. Many of the lines Milbank described as "objectionable" were not just used by Obama but by Clinton as well. Take, for instance, this passage from Washington Post article:

[Obama] borrowed anew on Tuesday at an outdoor rally here in San Antonio -- this time from his former foe, John Edwards. Criticizing pharmaceutical companies' ads, Obama joked: "You know those ads where people are running around the fields, you know, they're smiling, you don't know what the drug is for?"

Compare that to this staple of the 2004 Edwards stump speech: "I love the ads. Buy their medicine, take it, and the next day you and your spouse will be skipping through the fields.

Not noted was that in May 2007, Clinton used almost identical language as both Edwards and Obama. Here's the clip from her campaign website:

"...A lot of these so-called 'blockbuster drugs' are no more effective, and sometimes less effective, in treating conditions than old standbys that have been around for a long time, and don't have all the advertising of, you know, people running through fields of wildflowers that convince patients that they need the new drug..."

That's not all. Here's another graph from Milbank's article:

Edwards, accepting the party's vice presidential nomination in 2004, said, "Hard work should be valued in this country, so we're going to reward work, not just wealth." Obama, in turn, has been heard to say, "We shouldn't just be respecting wealth in this country, we should be respecting work."

The same language was used by the Clinton campaign to describe a key element of her economic agenda. We need, her website read, "tax fairness that rewards work, not just wealth."

To be sure, Milbank did note rhetorical similarities between Obama and Edwards that Clinton did not parody. For instance, there is Obama's campaign kickoff speech in February 2007: "I know I haven't spent a lot of time learning the ways of Washington. But I've been there long enough to know that the ways of Washington must change." That is compared to Edwards's 2003 announcement speech: "I haven't spent most of my life in politics, but I've spent enough time in Washington to know how much we need to change Washington."

Moreover, elements of Obama's "borrowing" lend itself to concerns about the senator's overall substance (or, for critics, lack thereof). As David Frum, a speech writer for President Bush, wrote the Huffington Post:

Obama is a candidate all about words - he has zero record of executive leadership, precious little of legislative accomplishment. It's all about the speeches. So if the speeches aren't his own ... what is there to him exactly? The figure in U.S. history he reminds me most of is William Jennings Bryan. What would we think if the Cross of Gold speech had turned out to be "borrowed"?

But, taken as a whole, the evidence seemingly paints a different picture than Obama as a "serial-borrower." Indeed, as other Republican word-smiths note, candidates of all political stripes frequently and liberally take lines from each other.

"When I used to write for Republicans in the late 1990s and up through a few years ago, I wrote language books for them and they all used it," said Frank Luntz, the Republican political strategist and "framing" guru. "And it wasn't what we call plagiarism. It was written for them to use. It was written for them to stay on message... I'm sorry but Hillary Clinton does not deliver her own speeches. People write words for her. Unless you create your own language you have no right to criticize some else, especially if it comes from a friend or ally."

No there there. Transparent mud slinging started by Karl Rove's proud graduates from the democratic wing of Hillary Clinton's campaign and the Clinton's sycophants and apparatchiks in the MSM. Apparently again trying for additional distraction and distortion and a day after getting thoroughly stomped in WI and HI.

How does that saying go, when you live in glass house.......?

A lot of tempest in a pot of tea. Orators lift anecdotes and rhetoric all the time. Not a big deal-and shame on Clinton for trying to make it one.

Ironic that Hillary's campaign is accusing Obama of being a talker rather than a doer.

With 10 losses in a row, what is Hillary's campaign is doing other than talking nonsense?

She needs to focus on getting good field operations and a more positive message instead of coming up with desperate distractions attacking Obama or the media.

Lets go back to when Hillary went to Selma and tried out her Southern Accent, now that was CLASSIC.

You know what, people always laugh at people that do this, but sometimes it can't be helped.

My family is all from the south. I was the only one born on the west coast. But whenever I go back down south, or am around southern people, I can't HELP but start talking with a drawl. I don't try to do it. I try not to do it. But it happens.

It is the same thing that happens to babies that are raised by southern parents. You hear it, you subconsicously mimick it. Babies aren't born speaking *southern* or with an english accent. But your ear picks it up, and you then sound that way...

Trust me, I don't try to do it. It happens. Oprah became a southern baptist preacher at those events... Same thing.

I'm more worried about who gets chosen for the Supreme Court than where whose words come from where. Let's get real!

This is becoming increasingly asinine. If the Clinton camp's goal is to make themselves look like a bunch of petty, desperate losers, they can stop now. Mission accomplished.

There is nothing wrong with any candidate reiterating boilerplate party rhetoric. I suppose this is the only defense against the undeniably powerful "yes we can" speech that's gotten millions of hits in the form of a music video by will.i.am. Unfortunately it has gained traction and the very notion of it undermines the crux of the Obama campaign--his ability to rise above and inspire people. Sen. Obama better go on the offense to combat these allegations. I want to hear a fiery, inspirational address confronting speech rhetoric and campaign finance spending limits, the only two potentially detrimental low hanging fruits. Without spinning either, a strong rebuttal can be made but it must or it will be a long, lonely ride on a swiftboat and this coming from an ardent Obama supporter.

He needs to nip this in the bud, big time or he's going to lend it undo credence.

I don't accept the idiotic premise. Seriously, how would you have a person say that hard work should be rewarded in this country? Are the words "work" and "rewarded" trademarked or copyrighted by anyone? You morons who are perpetuating this story are not intelligent enough to recognize the difference between an argument and plagiarism. You can't plagiarize an argument, a rationale, reasoning.

How can we not laugh at someone who says that quoting JFK, MLK, etc. is actually plagiarizing Gov. Patrick? Or are you all seriously suggesting that we to label someone a plagiarist because of the chorus "just words"?! Can we start having IQ tests before someone gets to hold a post in the media spectrum because you guys are dumbing down the nation with every carriage return.

I personally don't give a fuck.

Speechwriters, same ideas, same party, why should it matter?

This is all they got to throw at the front runner? bwhahahahaha

(and yes Hillary steals too, I don't care if it's just generalities like this)

During Senator Obama's first 8 eight months of elected service he sponsored over 820 bills.

He introduced 233 bills regarding healthcare reform,
125 bills on poverty and public assistance,
112 bills on crime fighting,
97 economic bills,
60 human rights and anti-discrimination bills,
21 ethics reform bills,
15 gun control,
6 veterans affairs and many others.

In his FIRST year in the U.S. Senate, he authored 152 bills and co-sponsored another 427.

IMPORTANTLY these included:
(1)the Coburn-Obama Government Transparency Act of 2006 that became LAW,
(2)The Lugar-Obama Nuclear Non-proliferation and Conventional Weapons Threat Reduction Act that became LAW,
(3)The Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act that passed the Senate,
(4)The 2007 Government Ethics Bill that became LAW,

A pretty significant record, for someone who supposedly has no legislative record. And ask yourself which is more important: Nuclear non-proliferation and ethics reform or a National forest in Puerto Rico?

This false meme that Obama has no "legislative accomplishments" grows increasingly tiresome. Let's compare and contrast, shall we?

The following information was gathered from the Library of Congress on the Legislative experience Junior Senator Hillary Clinton and Junior Senator Barack Obama.

Senator Clinton, who has served only one full term, which is 6 years and another year campaigning, has authored and passed 20 twenty pieces of legislation in her term of six years into law. These bills can be found at wwwhomas.loc.govv). Senator Clinton has passed.

(1) Establish the Kate Mullany National Historic Site.
(2) Support the goals and ideals of Better Hearing and Speech Month.
(3) Recognize the Ellis Island Medal of Honor.
(4) Name courthouse after Thurgood Marshall.
(5) Name courthouse after James L. Watson.
(6) Name post office after Jonn A. O'Shea.
(7) Designate Aug. 7, 2003, as National Purple Heart Recognition Day.
(8) Support the goals and ideals of National Purple Heart Recognition Day.
(9) Honor the life and legacy of Alexander Hamilton on the bicentennial of his death.
(10) Congratulate the Syracuse Univ. Orange Men's Lacrosse Team on winning the championship.
(11) Congratulate the Le Moyne College Dolphins Men's Lacrosse Team on winning the championship.
(12) Establish the 225th Anniversary of the American Revolution Commemorative Program.
(13) Name post office after Sergeant Riayan A. Tejeda.
(14) Honor Shirley Chisholm for her service to the nation and express condolences on her death.
(15) Honor John J. Downing, Brian Fahey, and Harry Ford, firefighters who lost their lives on duty.

Only five of Clinton's bills are, more substantive.
(16) Extend period of unemployment assistance to victims of 9/11.
(17) Pay for city projects in response to 9/11
(18) Assist landmine victims in other countries.
(19) Assist family caregivers in accessing affordable respite care.
(20) Designate part of the National Forest System in Puerto Rico as protected in the wilderness preservation system.

Not THAT impressive of a list for six years, is it?. From the so-called "solutions" candidate?

Continued...

So Nico and Sam, are you guys in charge of watering down any criticism of Barack? Lets make sure to bury the actual infraction in a pile of less egregious and even comical infractions? If the original oratories were to appear in two separate works of fiction there would be little doubt that someone had plagiarized. It was too original to "borrow" without citing it's original source. Running through fields, or fields of flowers, or skipping through them is a stereotype at this point for drug company advertisements. Apples and Oranges! Candidates are responsible for their speeches -- even when written by paid writers. Using writers and using another pols oratory -- not the same thing! Play fair will ya? BTW the "talking points" the republicans go parroting around on TV are obviously that -- again, not the same thing. Sorry but this piece is really poor.

The Obama campaign should make a tv ad showing Hillary's photo with the names of the Iraq war dead and injured listed and scroll down thru them and end it with "no apologies"...for her vote. Post it on the internet, make it viral, make people understand that it was not just a vote, make the blood on her hands real. People mag publishes the name of the war dead. Superimpose her image on it.
