"Plagiarism-gate," or whatever moniker is given to revelations that Sen. Barack Obama borrowed other politician's words, continued on Wednesday, despite evidence that suggests all candidates -- not just the Illinois Democrat -- are guilty of the alleged crime.

Late on Tuesday evening, Sen. Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign sent out an article written by The Washington Post's Dana Milbank titled "Claims of Rhetoric-Pilfering Pile Up on Obama." The piece, playing off of an earlier report that Obama had taken lines from his friend and surrogate, Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, included new evidence of the senator's "borrowing problem."

There was, however, one problem. Many of the lines Milbank described as "objectionable" were not just used by Obama but by Clinton as well. Take, for instance, this passage from Washington Post article:

[Obama] borrowed anew on Tuesday at an outdoor rally here in San Antonio -- this time from his former foe, John Edwards. Criticizing pharmaceutical companies' ads, Obama joked: "You know those ads where people are running around the fields, you know, they're smiling, you don't know what the drug is for?"

Compare that to this staple of the 2004 Edwards stump speech: "I love the ads. Buy their medicine, take it, and the next day you and your spouse will be skipping through the fields.

Not noted was that in May 2007, Clinton used almost identical language as both Edwards and Obama. Here's the clip from her campaign website:

"...A lot of these so-called 'blockbuster drugs' are no more effective, and sometimes less effective, in treating conditions than old standbys that have been around for a long time, and don't have all the advertising of, you know, people running through fields of wildflowers that convince patients that they need the new drug..."

That's not all. Here's another graph from Milbank's article:

Edwards, accepting the party's vice presidential nomination in 2004, said, "Hard work should be valued in this country, so we're going to reward work, not just wealth." Obama, in turn, has been heard to say, "We shouldn't just be respecting wealth in this country, we should be respecting work."

The same language was used by the Clinton campaign to describe a key element of her economic agenda. We need, her website read, "tax fairness that rewards work, not just wealth."

To be sure, Milbank did note rhetorical similarities between Obama and Edwards that Clinton did not parody. For instance, there is Obama's campaign kickoff speech in February 2007: "I know I haven't spent a lot of time learning the ways of Washington. But I've been there long enough to know that the ways of Washington must change." That is compared to Edwards's 2003 announcement speech: "I haven't spent most of my life in politics, but I've spent enough time in Washington to know how much we need to change Washington."

Moreover, elements of Obama's "borrowing" lend itself to concerns about the senator's overall substance (or, for critics, lack thereof). As David Frum, a speech writer for President Bush, wrote the Huffington Post:

Obama is a candidate all about words - he has zero record of executive leadership, precious little of legislative accomplishment. It's all about the speeches. So if the speeches aren't his own ... what is there to him exactly? The figure in U.S. history he reminds me most of is William Jennings Bryan. What would we think if the Cross of Gold speech had turned out to be "borrowed"?

But, taken as a whole, the evidence seemingly paints a different picture than Obama as a "serial-borrower." Indeed, as other Republican word-smiths note, candidates of all political stripes frequently and liberally take lines from each other.

"When I used to write for Republicans in the late 1990s and up through a few years ago, I wrote language books for them and they all used it," said Frank Luntz, the Republican political strategist and "framing" guru. "And it wasn't what we call plagiarism. It was written for them to use. It was written for them to stay on message... I'm sorry but Hillary Clinton does not deliver her own speeches. People write words for her. Unless you create your own language you have no right to criticize some else, especially if it comes from a friend or ally."

Hey, hey, hey you are all missing the point. The point is what would bush do? He has much troubles rememberizing and saying his speeches. He can't answer a question w/o a lawyer present.
Seems like someone is trying to drive a wedge between the democrats.

Listening to Hillary talk to Texans is sickening to us. She tries on this pathetic Texas Drawl that sounds like she has a speech impediment. It is so f*cking insulting. But here is a saying that could help her as she rides off into the sunset.. you know since she seems to like to stick her finger in the light socket over and over again.. 'Don't dig up more snakes than you can kill.'--maybe a Texan should have told her that one a few months back.. well she obviously can not hear us based on her lousy imitation of the way we talk.. cya Billary-- hardly knew ya'.

this has gotten beyond ridiculous. Next thing we know, if you mention "special interests" it's plagarism. This is beyond silly.

We need to send a clear message to the clinton, the democratic party doesn't need there type. Long live the Obama era in the DNC. 2 terms for Barack.

If she had a cozy lead, this non-sense would have never come up...But when an animal is cornered, they'll scratch and claw for dear life.

BTW, two more unions have endorsed...And today FOUR more superdellies have jumped on the Obama juggernaut. His biggest challenge now is to keep NH in the forefront. Stay hungry. And never fail to respect the Clinton machine until they raise the white flag.

Your title is terribly misleading and sensationalist.

Right!

Actually there was balance and one of the major points was the fact that Hillary does exactly the same thing ~

This frequent use of sensationalistic and misleading headlines makes me distrustful of all headlines and quick reads. This is particularly harmful since many people just scan the headlines, run with them without reading more than the quick read.

We deserve better, Arianna

"Even worse evidence" is peculiar, it suggests that the evidence is stronger for an additional claim of "plagarism", a claim which is unsupported by the article.

Just trying to justify their blog, I suspect, with a provocative and misleading header.

Hillary has run a crappy campaign. She started with the audacious claim of inevitability, which a mindless media repeated (is there anything they won't repeat straight-faced). Unfortunately, Hillary believed her own spin and was caught off guard when Illinois voters didn't get the memo.

She came back to tie in NH because women pitied her. It seemed harsh for the "inevitable" candidate to fall on her face in round 2. Hillary paid back the sympathy vote by trying to stop NV workers from attending at-large caucuses after their union endorsed Obama. Then she sent Bill to race bait in SC. After saying that she didn't take her name off the ballot in MI because MI wasn't going to count anyway, she decided that MI should count. And FL too. She dismissed any state or rule that did not favor her as irrelevent. When it looked like she would lose the pledged delegate count, she encouraged super delegates to override the popular vote. Then came the story from a high ranking Clinton rep that Clinton would go after pledged delegates. First, what pledged delegate in his/her right mind would abandon the winning candidate they were elected to vote for? More importantly, who likes a candidate that wants to win by stealing votes?

Now its all out fury and anything to make a headline no matter how absurd. Plagiarism. Empty words. All the while hiding her own tax returns and the records of what she did in the White House.

For the smartest girl in the class she's made a lot of really stupid calls.

Her final error has been thinking that Hispanics would save her in Texas. She didn't bother to understand the Texas primary/caucus system--which does not favor Hispanic influence. She dismissed state after state as not mattering and never thought Texas would matter either.

If Obama made any missteps it was being too confident in the NH polls, and possibly underestimating the significance of early voting in California. These pale, however, beside the missteps of the "experience" candidate.

Very good post, AgathaX. You lined out the campaign strategy of Hillary Clinton succinctly and aptly.

Didn't Hillary fake writing a book when she was first lady? I believe she took credit for writing a book when in fact she had a ghost writer who she never gave credit to. I think that borders on fraud.

I'm so glad that her negative campaigning seems to be backfiring on her. Hello, South Carolina!!! Talk about lesson not learned.

Negative campaigning is bad for the party. I wish she would just quit it already.

I will change to voting Independent. I cannot stomach this change to my Democratic Party. I don't like mega-churches. I don't trust their evangelistic preachers.

Oh - how I longed this year for a person worthy to be my President. If Ohio voters do not come out for Hillary and if the people do not wake up and see Obama for the danger he is to our party and I must say, to the country - I have to wash my hands of this. This movement for Obama is much too religious and self indulgent for me. Someday I will be able to proudly say I took no part in this.

Who said the Hillary campaign wanted to stick to the issues? Seems they can't handle the issues.

When will the crying begin again? Monday or Sunday before Ohio, with a couple of more times before then just in case there may be a snow store those days? Her only significant victories have comre after crying episodes. She may as well stick to what works for her.

These questions about Barack Obama's "stealing" remind me of Clarence Thomas' famous words: "lynching" a black man.

All the photos I see of Obama look like "Ted Haggard" head of a MEGA-CHURCH. I really resent my democratic party being taken over by this false prophet. He has everyone in my party believing he can win because he is the second coming. This is soooooooooooo CREEPY. He will not win because some of us will take a nap instead of going to church and we want a grown-up to be in charge of the red button.

One thing Europeans have criticized Americans for is what they see of us now - too religious and self indulgent. After the reality of the german experience, they will never trust an American president who exhibits this kind of character.

Again, you are so wrong.

I travel to Europe regularly. My friends and those

I meet through them, all agree, Bush is the most

despicable man EVER to have become our President.

AND while they like both Senators, Clinton and Obama,

they especially favor Senator Obama becoming

our next President.

You are always writing cheesy stupid opinions.

Also, there is NO WAY, YOU ARE A DEM!

Might want to have your vision checked. Ted Haggard is white. As far as a grown up in charge of the red button, I agree. About time we had one. Some brain cells would be a plus as well.

The democratic party is not your party. You've already told us that you will not vote for Obama if he gets the Dem nomination. You said, "I want to vote for McCain too now" and "I will change to voting Independent."

Now you're equating Obama with Ted Haggard and continuing to smear him as some sort of prophet. Spare us the "my democratic party" crap. You're a swiftboater and a fair-weather "fan".

Put the Kool-Aid down. For one thing, it's the Republican's, much like yourself, who have annointed him the "Messiah" or whatever the hell you wacky Christians call it. For another, this party NEEDED a second coming, to borrow your own words. Seriously. Put the Kool-Aid down.

Yes, but they usually get thanked in the acknowledgments if they don't get a "with" credit. Hillary tried to pass the book off as her own words. That shows a lack of character.

This is last week's news, it was barely news then, and it's been proven to be a backfire allegation. No matter who you support, let's all count our blessings that the "Clinton Campaign Team" will be nowhere near the Democratic nominee during the general election. They mastermind nothing but their own defeat.
