Air America, one of the country's more powerful radio networks and a major progressive megaphone, is switching ownership.

Charlie Kireker, a former political official and creator of Pendulum Media will succeed Stephen L. Green, the New York real estate CEO who helped lift the company out of bankruptcy, as chair of the board. The move will be finalized in mid March. Mark Green, Stephen's brother and Democratic activist, will remain as Air America's president.

"We look at what Steve and Mark Green have done as the transition role of saving and stabilizing the business and now we think it is a good opportunity to expand upon that," Kireker told the Huffington Post. "The company has made a lot of progress, we have consolidated operations, and streamlined things to be more efficient. We are yet to profitability but we are heading there."

Kireker is no stranger to the network. He was a minor investor in one of the companies that rescued Air America's ownership from Chapter 11 bankruptcy last March. That year, the network -- which was purchased by Green Family Media for $4.25 million -- posted more than $13 million in losses. Sometime in 2009, Green said, he envisions that the network will be in the black.

Currently Air America has 65 affiliates, an estimated audience of nearly 2 million weekly, and is set to release a new web-based format for radio listeners.

"It took Fox News five years and a half billion dollar loss to get its feet, find its audience and become profitable," said Mark Green. "We don't have a 'what's his name?" [referring to Rupert Murdoch]. But, we now have secure funding and expanded management team, on-air talent and a business strategy that will get us where we need to be... Reports of our death were greatly exaggerated by the right wing zeitgeist that wanted us to go away."

As for why the current team would leave the network on the brink of profitability, Green noted that his brother's true passion was not in media but in real estate. "The Kireker group is new money, energy and new confidence in the growing of Air America. Steve was happy to be a bridge from phase one when we had financial difficulties to phase three when it is poised for takeoff..."

Both Green and Kireker said that the ownership change would have no effect on the network's editorial content. "There are no programming changes at this time," said Kireker.

Current political dynamics, however, could position Air America in unfamiliar terrain. Indeed, the network was conceived to be a response to the proliferation of right-wing talk radio. And since it was launched in march 2004, Air America has, for the most part, operated on a landscape of predominantly GOP power. With Democrats slated to expand on slim majorities in Congress and possibly take back the White House, the network's affinity for railing against the powers-that-be may have to undergo an alteration.

"I don't want to get ahead of myself," said Kireker. "We hope there will be a Democrat in the White House and we think the prospects are good. And we think the country is showing an appetite for a more progressive agenda. So yes, Air America will no longer be, as it was in its early years, fighting against the majority Republican forces, though that began to shift, of course in recent years."

The day they launched, Green did a painful series of interviews trying to push his personal politics. It almost turned me off the network. He backed off though. I think the on air talent said, enough.

Air American needs a new Al Franken. Someone such as Keith Olbermann.

Here, here. However, I suspect the amount of effort it takes to produce Countdown is a full-time job and Keith has little time left to do a radio show. However, I do agree it would be nice.

Yeah, I know, Bill Orally does both but all you have to do is look at the quality of the Orally effort.

Hmmm, the quality translates to #1 rated cable news show for 8 straight years and his 11pm repeat is #7.

Olbermann sits at #19 . . . LOL.

Wow, this one sure brings out the rethugs media trolls.

Rethugs, your Joseph Gerbels, Murdoch, spent 100's of millions of dollars on FauxNoise for 6 years till tiny profit, since just talking idiots, and 1/10th the research budget of CNN.

To accelerate its adoption by cable companies, Fox News paid systems up to $11 per subscriber to distribute the network.

Guili's New York City also threatened to revoke Time Warner's cable franchise for not carrying FOX News.

Giuliani's motives were also questioned, as his then-wife was a producer at Murdoch-owned WNYW-TV.

Murdoch the king of sleazy business and entertainment, and you rethugs are proud og him. Pathetic.

We will need Air America more then ever when the rethug minority treasonously strives to undermine Obama's presidency.

and even with all that , And those witty terms of endearments for the right, Air america is still in 65 markets with an average of 31,000 listeners a week .. and again in probably the most diverse an best market in the country, Chicago, they can't even get a station that broadcasts after the sun goes down.. My son's highschool radio show broadcasts 24 hours. Why not put Olbermanson on the air ? He gets creamed by Bill every night he might gain a few hundred more .

Total Viewers - 2,379,000
25-54 Demo - 494,000

Keith Olbermann had the #1 rated show on MSNBC with an 0.8 rating, with 877,000 total viewers, and 334,000 viewers in the 25 to 54 demo. Copy and paste this url into a new browser window to see all the ratings:

http://www.mediabistro.com/tvnewser/original/January%20'08%20(LIVE+SD)%20Program%20Ranker.pdf

STEWERT: BTW, O'Reilly claims the reason Keith Olbermanns ratings are so low is that he is liberal, and nobody wants to watch liberals. The facts show a different story. Keith has the #1 rated show on MSNBC, and the 3 lowest rated shows in all of cable news are Republicans. Joe Scarborough is dead last with 269,000 total viewers, Tucker Carlson is next to last with 332,000 total viewers, and Glenn Beck is right above Tucker with 387,000 total viewers.

Funny how O'Reilly claims nobody is watching Olbermann because he is liberal, when he has the #1 show on MSNBC, and the 3 lowest rated shows in all of cable news are all hosted by Republicans. It's funny how Billy never mentions the 3 worst rated shows in all of cable news are all Republican shows.

The facts show that the only cable news shows that get over 1 million viewers are all on FOX, and that if a Republican does a cable news show on any other network they are dead last in the ratings, or next to last. What that shows is the only people who want to watch Republican news are the people who watch the FOX news channel. What a shocker, Republicans like to watch Republican biased news shows.

Because fascist traitor Murdoch PAYS for households.

But when you take those Republicans off the FOX network nobody watches them. That kills the O'Reilly myth that people only watch Republicans. It also shows that if a liberal does a good news show like Keith Olbermann does people will watch. And if Olbermann was on CNN he would probably get over 1 million viewers and be in the top 5 in ratings, his ratings are limited because he is on MSNBC, which is not on in as many households as CNN and FOX are.

Air America reminds me of that restaurant in every town that used to be a Pizza Hut. Since Pizza Hut left, there has been 5 owners and 5 different names in 5 years and the kitchen is still dirty and the food still sucks and each owner wonders why they go under after a year.

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

Air America: The Riviera Family Restaurant of radio.

Too many commercials, too many unappealing voices(Maddow, Rhodes, Lionel....this is talk radio, not Cartoon Voicing 101) Air America has sucked since Al Franken left.

Besides being downright brilliant, Rachel Maddow has a perfect radio voice; Randi Rhodes has overcome her vocal timbre problems by developing and emphasizing her other (and exceptional) broadcasting skills. I agree that "Lionel" is irritating -- the only thing more annoying than his voice is his pedantry. The unmentioned Thom Hartmann is the most well-informed and eloquent radio talker in the country. Taken as whole, the AAR weekday lineup is just short of excellent -- replacing "Lionel" with Sam Seder would fix their only extant significant talent problem.

It's funny, I found Thom Hartmann and Mike Malloy (and others years ago streaming on the web BEFORE there was an AAR. Thanks to I.E. America (now defunct) and RadioPower.org I found the voices that told my story (and almost everyone I knew).

Some of those radio people found their home on Air America, some went in other directions (Jones network - Ed Shultz) but actually can be heard on many AAR affiliates across the country. I know that most working people in the country would agree with me that healthcare, the economy, ending a senseless war in Iraq, returning to Constitutional Law (not the neocon interpretations) and finally going after the evil doers abroad and right here in our own government would be a good thing.

It seems crazy that many people have been snookered by the wingnut right and their sugar daddy Australian Murdock's network. It's about time that we embrace the American traditions of "sticking together" rather than marginalizing and dividing. We should be one country; by the people for the people. Not the corporations.

Truth to power.

I used to listen to Air American steam when it first came out. Wow, that weas thank goodness there was finally an opposite radio station that said what I liked to listen to.

Then, it went down. I no longer listen to it. Franken is gone, Winstead is gone leaving Maddow, and although Thom Hartman is still on, I rarely tune in to him any longer. Randi Rhodes is boring to me now. And no offence to Cent Ugar, but I simply canot understand a word he is saying--he talks too gaddam fast and I seldom can focus in on what he is trying to prove. I also used to like listening to Malloy. He is gone and I cannot get to listen to him wherever the heck he is now.

It has become just another bending over to the bottom line of profit, as far as I am concerne.

Too bad. I thought at one time, this would be a strong response to the likes of Limbaugh et al. Air American has fizzled out now, it seems.

Air America radio is alive and well. I listen to AirAmerica over XM radio and the line-up is great. Lionel is in the AM, Ed Shultz ( http://www.bigeddieradio.com/ @ midday. Mike Malloy is still on in the evening. Unlike the hot airbags on right-wing bable, Air America hosts will take calls from folks with differing viewpoints from their own. Randi Rhoades is still full of herself and AA could do better but all things considered, it beats listening to Bush's bottom feeders.

I agree. The first year of AA was great, then it started to go downhill, imho. So a few of us in the DC area got together and started our own little 'net station, Progressive Blend Radio http://www.progressiveblendradio.comm) to fill in what we felt were the gaps in what AA was doing. Pacifia Radio affiliate, and some great original shows too. :)

Everyone who's a fan of Air America should thank a woman named AMY WINSLOW who has quietly kept that place from unraveling for years. While most hosts bitch and argue over who has the bigger desk and who isn't getting paid Franken-stein bucks, Amy keeps the network running.

You must be thinking of Stephanie Miller, who is not AAR. The AAR hosts have been unbelievably even handed until about two weeks ago. Then they started to break for Obama. Except Sam Seder. He was an Edwards guy. When John dropped out, he moved to Obama right away. And Rachel Maddow supports Hillary.

What the network does not have is audience and a Rush Limbaugh to elevate the network beyond its natural base. The network does not have a star. An organization built on a negative, can reach some but going beyond will require something special.

Air America saved me. The one little lamp in an ocean of darkness. At times the signal would fade out, or be combined with some jock station, but I'd move closer, straining to hear, like the freedom fighters in the Soviet Union must have when trying to listen to Radio Free Europe in the dark days of the cold war.

There I heard truth. Thank God the Fascist right hasn't jammed every voice of truth in this country - yet.
