Air America, one of the country's more powerful radio networks and a major progressive megaphone, is switching ownership.

Charlie Kireker, a former political official and creator of Pendulum Media will succeed Stephen L. Green, the New York real estate CEO who helped lift the company out of bankruptcy, as chair of the board. The move will be finalized in mid March. Mark Green, Stephen's brother and Democratic activist, will remain as Air America's president.

"We look at what Steve and Mark Green have done as the transition role of saving and stabilizing the business and now we think it is a good opportunity to expand upon that," Kireker told the Huffington Post. "The company has made a lot of progress, we have consolidated operations, and streamlined things to be more efficient. We are yet to profitability but we are heading there."

Kireker is no stranger to the network. He was a minor investor in one of the companies that rescued Air America's ownership from Chapter 11 bankruptcy last March. That year, the network -- which was purchased by Green Family Media for $4.25 million -- posted more than $13 million in losses. Sometime in 2009, Green said, he envisions that the network will be in the black.

Currently Air America has 65 affiliates, an estimated audience of nearly 2 million weekly, and is set to release a new web-based format for radio listeners.

"It took Fox News five years and a half billion dollar loss to get its feet, find its audience and become profitable," said Mark Green. "We don't have a 'what's his name?" [referring to Rupert Murdoch]. But, we now have secure funding and expanded management team, on-air talent and a business strategy that will get us where we need to be... Reports of our death were greatly exaggerated by the right wing zeitgeist that wanted us to go away."

As for why the current team would leave the network on the brink of profitability, Green noted that his brother's true passion was not in media but in real estate. "The Kireker group is new money, energy and new confidence in the growing of Air America. Steve was happy to be a bridge from phase one when we had financial difficulties to phase three when it is poised for takeoff..."

Both Green and Kireker said that the ownership change would have no effect on the network's editorial content. "There are no programming changes at this time," said Kireker.

Current political dynamics, however, could position Air America in unfamiliar terrain. Indeed, the network was conceived to be a response to the proliferation of right-wing talk radio. And since it was launched in march 2004, Air America has, for the most part, operated on a landscape of predominantly GOP power. With Democrats slated to expand on slim majorities in Congress and possibly take back the White House, the network's affinity for railing against the powers-that-be may have to undergo an alteration.

"I don't want to get ahead of myself," said Kireker. "We hope there will be a Democrat in the White House and we think the prospects are good. And we think the country is showing an appetite for a more progressive agenda. So yes, Air America will no longer be, as it was in its early years, fighting against the majority Republican forces, though that began to shift, of course in recent years."

I'm glad to hear Air America finally has a long-term business plan. The Drobneys, who founded AAR, have moved on and founded a second radio network, Nova M, that hosts Mike Malloy and Jeff Farias. With Air America, Nova M, and broadcasters like Peter B. Collins, Peter Werbe, and The Young Turks, we are finally getting decent policy discussions out into the radio airwaves.

Good bye ranting hatemongers. Your heyday is coming to an end. None too soon.

Hey AAR—bring back the old logo.

Air America is funny when I'm alone in my home on a cold winter day. Then I remind myself that I'm a Republican and sitting though a AAR broadcast is like a mental S&M. Oh and waterbording is not that bad, I know a lady that dose a great job in my S&M club in midtown.

Jibreela is one sick human being. He likes to prove it with every post. So he's into S&M. Sounds very Republican to me.

How about Ed Shultz? He is still considered a part of the liberal/socialist air waves?

The media outlet in my city dumped the AM broadcast of Air America for a FOX sports format last year. I bought XM radio just to hear Air America everyday. I miss Al Franken in the daytime and Mike Malloy in the morning. Ed Schultz is too Rush-like for my tastes.
But the Queen of Air America is definitely Randi Rhodes. I cannot get through my day without my Randi fix. The woman is smart as hell and takes no prisoners. I love her, I quote her, and I depend on her to know what is really going on politically. If any changes come to AA, they should include giving Randi Rhodes more air time.

It disgusts me that most of those supposed liberals wouldn't even endorse the biggest liberal in the primaries, Kucinich. They're all a bunch of wanna-bee libs but without guts.

SpadeWork I feel the same way. It is funny how all the so called liberal/progressives did not even support Kucinnich or Edwards even when he said he would bring ALL of the troops out of Iraq pronto. Where were the anti-war supporters? So many have shown their true colors, by jumping on the Obama bandwagon and drinking the kool-aid or as Obama states it "bamboozled" or at least he copied it from others like most of his speeches and words. Carl Rove thanks all who drank the kool-aid for this bamboozling. He put out the bait and they ran with it.Were they trying to be hip or trying to make history, naive, or what? Even the so called liberal media, which is corporate run mind you, have shown great bias in their coverage. Like you say, a bunch of wannabee libs and when it came to the test , look who really was .

The biggest problem I had when evaluating candidates, in regards to Kucinich, is that the uphill battle for him to get legislation passed is virtually insurmountable. Even his own party doesn't take him seriously, let alone the Republicans. He's a great guy and is right on the issues...if you listened to Thom Hartmann on the Portland local show, you would have heard Thom talk up Kucinich all the time. Randi Rhodes does so as well. But you've got to get legislation passed, or all you are is a guy with good ideas but nothing to show for them.

The irony is there are more people responding to a column about Air America than there are people that actually listen to the station.

Wow, talk about making it up. Yo Sam, Air Anti-America is in it's death throes. Laughable, at best. By the way, that would be ownership change number?????? Really, the only things they need at this point is listeners, and advertisers.

"Air Anti-America is in it's death throes. "

Actually, it's doing quite well in Portland, and has added several new markets in recent months. It is unheard of for a national media network to NOT lose money in its firts few years of existence. Fox "News" hemmoraged cash for the first five years.

And what's with the "Anti-America" comment? Rush Limbaugh, champion America-hater, is on a different network.

Absolutely!!! Morning Sedition was the best morning show (or any show) out there. They've gone down hill ever since . . . then cancelling the Marc Maron Show, then Majority Report, then Sam Seder Show, now the Young Turks . . . it seems like whenever a show begins to take hold and become awesome, they get rid of them. they keep shooting themselves in the foot time and time again. i'm not renewing my premium membership because of their programming decisions. bringing marc maron back into the mix in any way possible would bring me back for sure!

"Lionel" is an irritating pedant with a voice better suited for silent films -- because of him, I no longer listen to AAR in the morning. The previous occupant of his time slot, Sam Seder, is a vastly more entertaining personality.

Using your search engine, you can locate the various Air America stations around the country. Just type in Air America and find the different stations. Most of them webcast, so you can listen to them on your PC. They carry different programs at different hours. I have five different stations bookmarked (Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Columbus, and New York). It is not as good as the radio in your kitchen or your car, but it gives you a lot of choices.

i gave up on randi rhodes long ago as she tilted to the right to invite sponsers , besides i just couldnt take her laughing at EVERYTHING anymore.

after that i gave up on the whole network.

what does that tell you about their on line talent.................

Randi Rhodes is not only AAR's most popular offering, she was also rated as the country's number one liberal talk show host by the trade publication "Talkers." She's certainly not a hard core lefty like Malloy, but your allegation of a rightward tilt to attract advertising seems pulled from where the sun don't shine from here.

After not listening to Randi for a long time, I tuned in the day after the grammies and there she was yapping about what women were wearing, some gossip and the rest was just mindless gibberish. Nothing of substance there, so I turned off the radio.

RR has become the equivalent of a liberal Rush Limbaugh.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:42 PM on 02/21/2008

For real progress, the show needs to expand it's bashing the right programs. Progressives are not right wing nuts. A few shows like NPR's Wait Wait..Don't Tell Me that make people laugh at events...adding a slight liberal/progressive bent but not in-your-face would go a long way. It gets really tiring hearing the same thing bashed on the head over and over. Al Franken apparently wasn't everyone's favorite but he was mine. He brought levity to an otherwise depressing format. We must be able to lighten up a bit now and then. And instead of everything being about what's wrong: how about some air time about what's right. Sure, it can be about what progressives are doing that's right...and occasionally what (ahem) the other side is doing right, but if it's all mean-spirited, all criticism, well again: We're not right wing nuts looking for someone to stir up our hate. We already have opinions. We need additional info, humor, encouragement every now and then and yes, some progressive talking points and some exposing of the other side.
