Air America, one of the country's more powerful radio networks and a major progressive megaphone, is switching ownership.

Charlie Kireker, a former political official and creator of Pendulum Media will succeed Stephen L. Green, the New York real estate CEO who helped lift the company out of bankruptcy, as chair of the board. The move will be finalized in mid March. Mark Green, Stephen's brother and Democratic activist, will remain as Air America's president.

"We look at what Steve and Mark Green have done as the transition role of saving and stabilizing the business and now we think it is a good opportunity to expand upon that," Kireker told the Huffington Post. "The company has made a lot of progress, we have consolidated operations, and streamlined things to be more efficient. We are yet to profitability but we are heading there."

Kireker is no stranger to the network. He was a minor investor in one of the companies that rescued Air America's ownership from Chapter 11 bankruptcy last March. That year, the network -- which was purchased by Green Family Media for $4.25 million -- posted more than $13 million in losses. Sometime in 2009, Green said, he envisions that the network will be in the black.

Currently Air America has 65 affiliates, an estimated audience of nearly 2 million weekly, and is set to release a new web-based format for radio listeners.

"It took Fox News five years and a half billion dollar loss to get its feet, find its audience and become profitable," said Mark Green. "We don't have a 'what's his name?" [referring to Rupert Murdoch]. But, we now have secure funding and expanded management team, on-air talent and a business strategy that will get us where we need to be... Reports of our death were greatly exaggerated by the right wing zeitgeist that wanted us to go away."

As for why the current team would leave the network on the brink of profitability, Green noted that his brother's true passion was not in media but in real estate. "The Kireker group is new money, energy and new confidence in the growing of Air America. Steve was happy to be a bridge from phase one when we had financial difficulties to phase three when it is poised for takeoff..."

Both Green and Kireker said that the ownership change would have no effect on the network's editorial content. "There are no programming changes at this time," said Kireker.

Current political dynamics, however, could position Air America in unfamiliar terrain. Indeed, the network was conceived to be a response to the proliferation of right-wing talk radio. And since it was launched in march 2004, Air America has, for the most part, operated on a landscape of predominantly GOP power. With Democrats slated to expand on slim majorities in Congress and possibly take back the White House, the network's affinity for railing against the powers-that-be may have to undergo an alteration.

"I don't want to get ahead of myself," said Kireker. "We hope there will be a Democrat in the White House and we think the prospects are good. And we think the country is showing an appetite for a more progressive agenda. So yes, Air America will no longer be, as it was in its early years, fighting against the majority Republican forces, though that began to shift, of course in recent years."

Air America gave people like me a place to go on the radio. Right-wing talk is so full of slander and pro-war propaganda it's unbearable. In a positive progressive climate, rather than railing against the establishment, Air America could educate the public on issues like healthcare and the environment. A well informed public can provide needed support for good legislation. This is an important function.

MagisterLudi. If you are trying to refer to Ed Shultz, you are incorrect. He is not on AirAmerica, he is on Jones Radio Network. He may be carried on stations that identify as AirAmerica, but he is not on that network. And, by the way, he is very successsful at it.

So Whale, you're saying he's not Rush sound-alike?

You're saying he was not hired attempting emulate Rush model and style: that slightly gruff and bullying tone of voice supposedly appealing to the proletariat?

Common, I've done plenty of work in show biz. to know copy-cat hire when I hear one.

I still say that Pacifica is a better model for LONG TERM survival, even for a for-profit company.

You disagree?

I think Randy Rhodes and Sam Seder do an excellent job. But in midday they put in Ed Shultz, who spends half the show talking about hunting, fishing and football. Maybe they're going for the middle America crowd, but I could give a s*&t about that stuff and usually just switch to NPR. I'd like to see something on my dial besides Hannity and Rush, and the odious Mark Levine, that's for sure. (Although it's getting more and more entertaining to hear those guys try to spin Bush in a positive light).

I am an Ed Shultz fan and not so much keen on Sam or Randy, but then again Ed is more left-to-center than Randy and Sam. All in all, I am glad to have the variety on the dial. Rush, Hannity, and Levine are so full of hate for hatred's sake.

yup, ed is one of those 'good ol boys ' that some dems think they need to swell the ranks.........ed is an empty suit that tests the winds before deciding to express himself.

I like Ed Schultz, tho Im not into hunting, fishing; only sporadic interest in football and outdoorsy opinions. But Ed's audience is growing, cuz his opinions are very reasoned and he gives any reasoned caller a fair shake, even he if his opinion is different.

Even if Obama takes the White House in November, Air America will still have an important role in pushing for progressive change and keeping up pressure on Democrats in Congress to help carry out a progressive agenda.

Those who say that Air America is dead should keep in mind that the network has done well in the markets where it is on the air. If the "free market" were allowed to work, then AA would be in many more markets than it is now. AA has proven that it can compete with the big name cons out there. They just need more time to shore up their business - something that any new business needs.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:31 AM on 02/21/2008

That is only partially correct. They gave Air America a station here in San Diego with the same opportunity as they give all new stations in this market, plus they gave an extra budget for advertising, and the station was killed in the ratings.

In other areas, it is doing well.

The Clear Channel never advertised until the track record of first couple years less than stellar. Once the billboard ads began showing up, ratings public started becoming aware, and execs started worrying Rush and Roger Dodger's voices were losing power. Numbers I've seen reflect that too. When one corporation owns 1000 stations you seriously think they are gonna let dissenting voices be heard...? sorry but they have had free rides all too long.

Agreed a new company needs more breathing space to survive.
In a major markets like LA, New York and SF most leftists still prefer Pacifica's WBAI, KPFK and KPFA.

Air America needs to work hard to win listeners.

Hopefully they succeed, while ignoring Rush and Fox model.

We need them to keep us all honest. I also love the fact that Randi Rhoads does a really good job of checking the facts and investigating what she's talking about.

So far there is no proof he has pissed away anything.

What is it with you rightwing fucks and attacking Soros anyway?

IF you are going to attack rich people for backing causes then perhaps you should attack that FOREIGNER what's his name (Murdoch) or is it only rightwing hacks like Murdering Murdoch that pass muster?

You guys need to get over your hypocrisy and then go fuck yourselves.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:46 AM on 02/21/2008

Attack rich people? That's what you guys do. Sam whines about not having a "what's his name" (which is Sam complaining that Air America doesn't have a billionaire throwing money at them).

But they do- George Soros. So why don't you look at your own hypocracy for once and quit getting your little feeling hurt if someone points it out.

You guys freak out about anything Murdoch does but give Soros a pass if he does the same thing.

Why is that?

I agree. Can anyone even find it on their dial? I'm in NY and I'm not sure it exists. I think it's a great channel - I love Randi - but they can't be powerful if they can't pay their rent; which is the reason they keep getting shut out of the major markets. But I wouldn't worry about their relevancy with a Dem sweep in November - Hannity, O'Reilly, Limbaugh and Savage all did very well during the Republican majority. AA will be fine.

What an idiotic remark! Yup, all I have to do is turn my radio to 950AM and there it is. I live in Rochester and I know that there is an AA affiliate in NYC. Try turning your radio on, or go to their website and find out where their affiliate in NY is!!!!!

I can hardly hear them here on the Southside of Chicago. One would think that South surburban middle-class and poor would be a good choice for Progressives. But instead the focus is upon the North Shore elite. So much for popularism!

By-the-way, I enjoy Mark Green and his efforts but is it possible someone in the organization can ever respond to an e-mail? Even an acknowledgment would be great.

We can all hope Air America survives.
However, who occupies the White House matter little.

The issue is entertaining, imaginative and informative format. A better model for long term survivial would be Pacifica Radio and NOT Rush Limbaugh with his blowhard coverage.

Right now Air America has whats-his-name who sounds EXACTLY like Rush, even down to vocal inflections. This ain't gonna work long term ( I hope).

ROFLMAO!!!

The opening sentence says:

"...one of the country's more powerful radio networks..."

Yet the second and fourth paragraphs repeatedly use the words "Chapter 11 bankruptcy", and the second paragraph says "We are yet to profitability".

"Bankruptcy" and "Powerful" are oxymorons. So are "Chapter 11" and "Profitability".

And, no, no one in broadcasting believes they are turning this turd around.

"Power" is not soley defined as "the state of being wealthy"- it has to do with influence. Our country is in debt to the rest of the world by trillions of dollars- would you claim America is not "powerful?" Numerous well-known companies that have been able to influence American policy for years have faced financial hardship. Does that make them not powerful? What about the other company referred to in the article, "FOX News", which operated at a loss for years. Is FOX "weak?" You need to get yourself a better dictionary.
