Democrats Debate In Texas
Tonight in Austin, Texas, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton will go head-to-head in their penultimate debate before the March 4th primaries.

AP has the basics:

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton set out to change the course of the Democratic presidential race Thursday in the first of a pair of debates with Sen. Barack Obama before March 4 primaries in two battleground states.

Clinton has lost 11 straight primaries and caucuses to Obama -- including an overseas competition for support among Americans living aboard -- and fallen behind in the delegate chase.

Obama's strong showing has made him the man to beat in a historic struggle between a black man and a white woman, and even some of Clinton's own supporters conceded she needs victories in both Ohio and Texas early next month to preserve her candidacy. Rhode Island and Vermont also vote that day.

And that is the difference between you and I. You want to 'chat,' and you want me to chat also. I don't want to chat, but instead want an EXCHANGE AND HONING OF IDEAS.

You call 500 word essays “boring” because they demand from you critical thinking, when you are here for entertainment and socializing. So you demand that I fit into your mold and post snarky one-liners like the other chatters here do.

On the other hand, I find chatting and socializing boring; I am interested in exploring the ideas that will define the 21'st century. This is a blog after all, and Arianna offers us an opportunity to post our ideas and thoughts. Where some chatting makes for a friendlier blog, an excess amount renders this blog into a chat room, which it is not.

I challenge you to organize your thoughts sufficiently to make a tight essay outlining a new argument at least 3X a week. Please.

My take on the debate is that Clinton was trying to show the differences between her and BO and detail what she would do in the position of president. She is a smart lady who knows what politics consist of and what happens during the primary season is typical, but once the final choices are made...the goals stay the same and she, whatever the outcome, will work toward achieving those goals.

BO, I believe, was trying to state that his goals and Clintons are the same, but that he would be better at getting them achieved by working across the aisle. At the same time, I don't think he offered many details, as usual, but I do believe he was attempting to convince Clinton supporters that he would be as good a choice as Clinton. I think he also knows he is the frontrunner with a good chance of becoming the nominee, so he was careful in his opinions of Hillary to avoid a problem at the convention.

Hillary: "Change you can Xerox."

Corporate to the end.

It was more original copy than photocopy

Silly Season....what I don't get is why BO just doesn't say, yes, I borrowed words from Deval and be done with it. Instead, if you check all of the explanations...both him and Deval have contradicting explanations of when where and how on this topic.

It may seem "silly", but it also is true, that when you are being touted as Inspirational, and you are running as a change agent with new ideas, then using not so new ideas seems counterproductive. And the differences in explanations....well, seems like a typical Washington politician.

CLINTON: Whatever happens, we're going to be fine. You know, we have strong support from our families and our friends. I just hope that we'll be able to say the same thing about the American people, and that's what this election should be about.

EDWARDS: ...I want to say this to everyone: with Elizabeth, with my family, with my friends, with all of you and all of your support, this son of a mill worker is going to be just fine. Our job now is to make certain that America will be fine.

Thanks for the comparisons.

If you actually read between the lines though, she was kind of warning against voting for Obama, because America may not be so fine. That's what "I just hope that we'll be able to say the same thing about the American people" was IMO.

It's like getting a last swipe at him, before she shuts up.

Anderson Cooper says the race is split down the middle. Is the race split down the middle?

Can you go 0-10 and still be considered in a "tie" with your opponent? The same opponent that is beating you by delegates, votes, and donations?

There must be a new definition of “split down the middle.”

Uhh, I believe there is like a difference of less than 100 delegates between them. That seems pretty split considering they need 2025 to win.

you could tell hillary at the end was trying to shed a tear or come up with some sort of sob tone to her voice another missed opportunity to turn on the water works in an attempt to garner votes from the pansy liberal men and women in Texas and Ohio.

It won't make it to the convention. She will lose Texas, and Ohio will be close enough that she won't gain any ground. The super delegates will desert her in droves and force her out, probably before PA.

All in all it was a good debate for the Dems and it puts them miles and days ahead of the untethered from reality duo of McCain and Huckabee.

GObama.

Be Well.

what a great debate!!!

The crowd was reacting like an American Idol crowd.

and after the debate all the tired newspeople could do was to talk about what "plagiarism" is and go for the tiniest negative points they could find in the debate.

Could the pundits just be happy for once? No wonder their ratings are falling. they are totally out of touch with the sentiments of the public

.

I think it may be time for us Dems to consider the classy end game.

To many Obama supporters are over the top with their zeal.

She was and is a worthy adversary deserving of all our respect and praise.

Remember ... "the quality of your victory is measured against the quality of your opponent!"

Zealous over the top remarks here are an equal opportunity practice. Obama supporters hardly dominate in that tactic.

I agree with you, but do hear some of the things that Wolfson (discount Fleischer) and Penn (Wal-Mart rove) have been saying about Sen. Obama?

They claim he doesn’t have enough experience to be president. Is that a classy thing to say about an opponent in your party? I don't think so.

They are actually making the case against Sen. Obama for John McPain. Were I a Republican, I’d put money into a 527 and repeat the statements that Sen. Obama’s Democratic opponents have said about him in a commercial.

Penn said. Obama has "relatively no experience in national security," Penn continued, an issue that "is going to be reflected in the debates that we have over the next couple of weeks."

The cheapest shot by Hillary (after the change u can xerox comment) was saying how Obama' supporter from Texas could not name a single legislative accomplishment of Obama. She surely knows that his ethics reform legislation (with MacCain), transparency legislation (with Coburn), and nuclear non-proliferation legislation (with Dick Lugar) far surpass her inconsequential and meaningless legislations banning flag burning and naming post offices.

As far as the debate is concerned, yes. But, personally, I don't at all respect her for consistently siding with the NeoCons on the issue of war and foreign policy. And I think that she deserves rebuke, nor praise for her votes where she sided with neoCons..

That thing about Obama having only slogans and no substance worked against Hillary. Throughout the debate, Obama got into just as much detail as she did, displaying clearly that he has thought through his positions, and that he does have specific and detailed approaches to solve problems.

He handled the thing about talking to foreign leaders extremely well. We should be willing to negotiate with our adversaries without pre-conditions, just as we did with the Soviets.

Foreign policy and war are the issues that made me choose Obama over Hillary.

The number one issue for me is not to award anyone that undermined this country by authorizing a war, an illegal war, that was waged by neocons and supported by democrats afraid they would be left off the bus.

The second is I actually believe it is possible to govern from the ground up.
