At the end of his monthly visit with Patt Morrison on KPCC today, LAPD chief William Bratton pooh-poohed the need for the paparazzi law proposed by Councilman Dennis Zine. He then lit into Britney, Paris et al.

What we need is Britney Spears to stay home instead of traipsing all over town. That would solve the problem. We don't need additional laws.... I've got laws coming out my ears to deal with this issue.

What you have is several young women in this town and several young men basically making fools of themselves and tying up not only my resources but the resources of the media that would do better covering legitimate stories instead of a bunch of airheads running around out there....

Quite clearly some of these characters so favored by the paparazzi are clearly in need of services. Not police services, but psychiatric services.

Bratton also repeated that he lacks sympathy for voters who oppose tax increases to enlarge the force. "People here just feel they're being crushed by taxes. I don't feel that...I pay much less here than i did [in NYC or Boston.] And you get much less here."

The chief's exactly right. The police have better uses for their time than to act as securty for a bunch of spoiled, stupid children.

To say Britney Spears needs to stay home is a bizarre solution. She should be allowed to move about freely just as anyone else. If she wants to go to the gas station to pee or go to Starbucks for coffee, then she should be able to do that. The problem is with the tabloids who who actually think we give a shit about her every move.

Maybe Blackwater could get a no bid contract to provide celeb security--the LAPD and LA Sheriff Dept have to deal with some of the highest concentration of gang activity in the US and with that alone-its a wonder they have time to do other things like provide traffic enforcement and general beat patrols that police departments are supposed to provide.
They don't have time to play babysitters to rich, spoiled brats who are whacked in the head to boot and the scumbag paparazzi who feed the public's apparently insatiable desire to read about what they are up to 24/7.

Lindsay, Paris and
Britany should all stay home.
They do absolutely nothing other than expose their genitals, dress slutty, buy coffee and cigarettes (and the occassional burger) shoplift, and cause traffic jams and chaos wherever they go. Consider them a menace. All three of them should have had their licenses pulled. If they need a pack of smokes and a starbucks send a driver and an assistant out.

Ah! The voice of reason.

Maybe someone can get that bimbo to cool her jets. Skank.

Brattan is useless. To tell a mentally ill women that she must stay at home because the police aren't going to protect her (Brit's taxes alone probably pays for a tenth of the entire police force) is assinine. Nice.

Perhaps Brit's guardian's should commence a lawsuit against LAPD right now, since their commissioner basically stated that it's inconvenient to protect Brit and anyone else who happens to stand between the paparazzi and their intended victim.

I think the Chief ought to get off his ass and do his job. Sitting behind his desk playing grab ass with the help is going to solve anything. Law enforcement has come a lpng way but it still takes leadership and action, not rhetoric and bullshit.

I don't hearing anything about him playing grab ass with anyone. Are you sure you aren't thinking of the Mayor and the Telemundo reporter?

I'm thinking if he's enforcing the law he'd be too busy to have photo opts trying to redirect the issue of his inept performance onto others.

I've had my issues with the LAPD but I have to agree with the guy. Let's see, if I had limited police resources and my choice was between fighting drug lords or protecting Britney Spears from photographers. Gosh, it's a tough call, but I'd have to go with the drug lords.

The City and County of Los Angeles has a much smaller proportion of police forces than NY City and many other metro areas in the USA. The police there have much greater need to do their job besides dealing with such celebs. In NY City, there seems to be a lot less of the papparazzi presence and their problems to occupy police.
Bratton is right, the celebs in the LA should stay home or use drivers to reduce their risks and avilability to the paparazzi and their demands for police services.

This is the commissioner who was unceremoniously ousted by Giuliani in NY when he started to get more credit than Rudy for the city's drop in crime. This was America's first hint of what a swell guy Rudy is. Bratton didn't speak to him for 10 years. Any enemy of Rudy is a friend of mine.

good luck making that happen! he's right though, if britney stayed home instead of hitting up every gas station and starbucks in town, every single day of her life, she'd get a lot more peace and quiet in her life.

Bratton didn't let Paris out of jail early. She wasn't his "jurisdiction."
Sheriff Lee Baca let her out early.

There are already ample laws in place to keep the paparazzi situation in check. There are traffic laws to prevent tailgating, running red lights, etc. Get enough paparazzi cars chasing a celebrity and you can probably find a PARADE ordinance that they are violating. The laws that are already in place need to be ENFORCED.
Spears could solve her own problem by hiring a DRIVER to drive her around in a limo with tinted windows. (We would all benefit from this except maybe Harvey Levin. God knows, the drivers in L.A. would be safer.) The thing is, Spears LIKES the attention of the paparazzi - they keep her relevant. And, she finds sex partners among them.

What a d-bag this guy is. As a professional photographer, I can attest that LA has a gigantic problem with psychotic Stalkerazzi.

And yes, they do need a paparazzi law. And officers that feel like enforcing the law.
