Obama To Receive Endorsement Of Cleveland Mayor

Sen. Barack Obama received the endorsement of Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson on Thursday, at an event with Obama's wife Michelle at Cleveland State.

Obama now has the backing of the mayors of Ohio's top two cities: Columbus -- whose mayor Michale Coleman announced his support in October -- and Cleveland.

Both Jackson and Coleman's support should play a helpful role for Obama in the state's upcoming March 4 primary. Sen. Hillary Clinton deemed Ohio (and Texas) as her campaign's firewall. And while the New York Democrat holds a relatively substantial lead in recent polls, Obama has recently gained steam, aided in part by his 11 straight primary wins.

Jackson, the first African-American Italian mayor of the city, won election in November 2005 with 55 percent of the vote. His brief tenure has, for the most part, been a positive one, as he has pushed for changes in the city's police force and a joint-tax sharing venture between Cleveland and its suburbs. Recently, he snubbed his local congressman and former presidential candidate Rep. Dennis J. Kucinich (D-Ohio), by endorsing Cleveland City Councilman Joe Cimperman to take his seat.

Cleveland is one of the most poverty stricken cities in America. Nothing has changed since Jackson became Mayor. He is the butt of jokes on local radio.

I guess Obama promised him more government handouts than Hillary did.

The mantra of Democrat voters: How much will you give me?

Cleveland has been run by Democrats as long as I can remember, going back to Mayor Kucinich in the 70's. It took a Republican mayor to bring them out of default after Dennis was done. Since then, nothing but Democrats. Cleveland has lost population and industry an gained poverty and homeless. All under the watchfull eyes of Democrats. They keep raising taxes and people keep fleeing to the suburbs. Their schools are a mess and drug use and gang violence are on the rise.

We have been hearing about all these job training plans for years. All lip service.

You want a solution? How about capitalism, lower taxes and no more Democrats.

Cleveland and Cinncinnati mirror two big cities that need big help-- Barack will lay out a Step-by-Step Plan to all the working Class (all of us) and to the jobless of those cities-- he'll do well- when he maps out solutions to bring back jobs and industry left behind-- it should be "Let- no- worker-Behind"

I don't know how much these mayoral endorsements matter. I tried finding approval ratings for the two with no luck. Ohio still has a fair chunk of undecideds (14%). It will depending heavily on how independents in each respective state view their mayor. I know in Denver, A Mayor Hickenlooper endorsement would mean a great deal.

"respective state" -- I meant city.

They mostly matter in regards to local, on-the-ground political machinery - mayors are widely held to be more important than senators or governors in that respect.

We're all workong class; this argument about being on the side of working class won't hold- as the semantics are all lopsided- most of us worked or retired- we are the big majority in America-- not some small electorate ..

The endorsements keep coming, super delegates are switching over, I guess people just love a winner!

People not only love a winner, they love winners who win the right way. I cannoit recall the last major endorsement Clinton has recieved. People question whether Obama can "run the country". It's not his job to run the country. His job is to appoint the necessary people who have the capablity to serve the country. His role is to manage those people, sign off on decisions, and lay out a plan for them to complete. When you are the rock star that Obama is, who wouldn't want to line up and work for you? He gets things done because HIS PERSONALITY ISN'T AN IMMEDIATE PISS-OFF AND PEOPLE DON'T MIND WORKING WITH HIM (hint to Hillary and McCain!!!)
