Olbermann Slams O'Reilly For "Lynching Party" Remark

Last night on "Countdown," Keith Olbermann slammed Bill O'Reilly for saying on his radio show, "I don't want to go on a lynching party against Michelle Obama unless there's evidence." In an ironic twist, Olbermann used the words of President Bush — who just last week said, "Some Americans do not understand the effect that references to nooses and lynching can still have" — to excoriate O'Reilly's insensitive remark.

I'm a working man, not an effete guilty liberal, family has a bucket of military medals, spitting on this bully coward o'reilly progressive here to reaffirm what many have eloquently, and succinctly explained. There is no debate here. The use of this verb refers to decades of pure terrorism. It is absolutely 100% unacceptable. Bill O'Reilly has given us a short sound-bite document of the pernicious, noxious weed nature of racism, that brutes like him think they can dismiss with a smirk and a wave of the hand. Democracy only started in this country with the passage of the Civil Rights Act. Millions of American citizens before that time were systematically denied basic rights, and "lynching" (an act named for a southerner, and specific to the devilish deed) was used as a textbook terror tactic to maintain that oppression. This isn't an argument. These are the facts. I'm the caucasian undercover brother, and I know the code. O'Reilly is a coward, and clearly shameless. I can't imagine how this punk can survive on the streets of NYC. I don't care if he's fired, but this cannot slide by. The ace of race cards is on the table.

Despite the best efforts of many, most Americans are uncomfortable with discussions of race. Might one of the effects of Obama receiving the Democratic nomination be that it forces us to have a much needed national discussion of race and racism?

This is insanity. I can't believe you people get so hung up over the word 'lynched', you're probably the same people that were apathetically saying "I love Obama, but our country isn't ready for a black president. Maybe next time.." four months ago. Stop being so touchy. Obama's ability to rise above all of this nonsense is what has garnered him so much positive response from the voters and the media, he can roll with the punches. Why can't you?

My question is, why did Keith automatically associate "lynching" with being a "black thing"? The reason that Obama is doing so good, is that he sounds like a good hearted man who happens running for President who happens to be black. I'm concerned that Countdown constantly focuses on Obama being an African American. So is O'Reilly a racist, or is Olberman a racist for even making the connection? Honestly, I didn't make the connection of "lynching" and racism until Olberman started obsessing about it. Just a thought.

Why he associated "lynching" with, (he did not say), a "black thing" is simple. The verb to lynch comes from a southerner named Lynch and specifically refers to the inhuman violence that oppressed ex-slaves in the Jim Crow south. One of the most outrageous excuses for the Iraq occupation is that we must fight the terrorists there "so we don't have to fight them here on our own soil." Let's get this straight, African-Americans lived for GENERATIONS under a reign of pure terror. The practice of lynching is the definition of terror. This caucasian is not "hung up" on the word, and why don't you ask any Black person over the age of 50 who came from the deep south if they shouldn't lighten up on the word. This isn't political correctness. He's on primetime(Bill) and he chose the verb. And what's that ridiculous crap about Thomas, and unless? I don't care if he's fired, but it's absolutely not OK what he said, I know the code and that was racist. Go to You-Tube, listen to little NIA sing "Strange Fruit", then tell us all how it's not a big deal. Peace

I used to turn to MSNBC to get away from Fox. Olbermann's constant haranguing at O'Reilly is tiresome. I don't need to be reminded by Olbermann what a jerk O'Reilly is.

Olbermann talking about O'Reilly goes for news on this site? It's been pretty obvious to Olbermann watchers that Keith has some kind of man crush on O'Reilly.

I used to watch Olbermann and became sick of his constant stories on Billo so I flipped the channel to see for myself. Now I watch Billo instead.

And your response to this being news? Olbermann ran this story for 4 straight days and mentions O'Reilly at least once an episode.

Why does it bother you? Are you that weak minded that you can't see that people have different view points?

Americans don't like soccer like the rest of the world, does that bug you?

O'Reilly deserves every nasty remark he gets. The vileness and hatred people like him spread is destroying civility in this country. We have become a nation filled with hatred due to these nasty vile people. I get tired of Olbermann talking about him. It seems like he is giving credibility to a slug where none is deserved. But, at the same time we need to address the serious problem that is growing in our country thanks to vile people like O'Reilly. We either learn to tune people like him out and send them packing or we destroy ourselves with the venom these people spew! The bottom line here is Conservatives are vicious people and their hatred and self-loathing is a cancer that is growing and devouring us!

Amen. This is the Fox 'broadcaster' who is, in ever more definitions of the term, a despicable human being. He's governed by ignorance and pride; and the stupidity of his remarks, the myopia of his vision, and the shallowness of his humanity, causes me, as a white man, to be humiliated and ashamed for the repercussions of the false superiority claimed by others who share my skin colour. I'm serious, I feel like puking my guts out every time I hear his name. I'm not American, but I am not excluded from being white. My reflex is to seek swift and powerful retribution against this 'broadcaster' and the network that broadcasts him, something in the order of a medieval comeuppance using a heavy sledgehammer with spikes all over it. But I don't want to be reduced to his level. In this shame, this humbleness, I really feel sorry for both him and who ever keenly listens to him, because these people are blind, and are obviously suffering some psychological pain that needs healing. He ought to be removed from the public ear, and given the care he needs.

People who believe in lower taxes, a free market and believe in a religion are a cancer?

Bush may be but it's people like you that make liberals look crazy.

Again, BOfever your post lacks any meaningful contents.

Those same "people who believe in lower taxes" only believe in lower taxes for the wealthy, and they spend like there's no tomorrow. Where have you been the last eight years?

"A free market" you say, can you say Enron, Health Care, Lincoln Savings, and the recent financial market debacle just to name a few. All were a result of your so-called free market?

Lastly, the only religion O'Reilly believes in is the religion of Bill O'Reilly which only preaches bigotry, hatred and deceit.

How about we boycott Fox's sponsors- Rupert doesn't really need the money nor does his spawn.

I'd love to see BO shamble through the streets begging for change- or maybe he can go to XM/Sirius where people ( I don't know who) will pay to hear his pap and he can leave the public airwaves.

I find it interesting that Olbermann was not man enough to touch the Shuster comment about Chelsea being "pimped". He gave a sorry apology which, but Shuster was not on the "Worst Person in the World" list.

Both the lynching and pimping comments are comments of intolerance and violence.

Both merited being denounced. That is why this video, in light of a missing commentary on Shuster, is NOT so impressive.

It's easy to condemn a comment on racial oppression, but not female subjugation and objectification.

Just another way the media is so obviously making a statement that sexism is ok, but racism is taboo.

Again, advantage Obama.

Perhaps the fallacy of your position is that many of us recgnize the word 'pimp' in a non-sexual fashion. We knew what Shuster meant, and I seriously doubt that ANYONE took it in a sexual sense (including Chelsea), except those with an axe to grind.

I think KO handled the Shuster comments correctly. He did in in relation to the offense. Bill O is a constant offender. To my knowledge, Shuster has no history of sexist or bigoted remarks. Instead, I find him to be an outstanding reporter.

Also understand what has happened with the word PIMP. It's used on titles of TV shows, records and movies. While it is still offensive, the media's hypocritical approach to the use of the word makes Shuster's use of the word excusable, but still punishable. He's been suspended.

In my opinion, KO, like NBC, handled the situation well.

I am so tired of the feminists trotting out their old arguement of sexism, it was fine with them when Hillary cried before the New Hampshire primary, "it showed her human side". The problem with this arguement is that if Barack Obama would have cried, he would have been laughed out of the race as weak, but for Hillary it was a sign of the strength of her character. Give Me A Break! As for Keith, I wouldn't miss the show, and I am a Shuster Booster! I hope that Billary and their whole family fade from the public memory as soon as possible!

Having worked years in broadcasting I'd like to note that KO and Shuster are both employees of NBC --when a broadcast outlet takes disciplinary action they usually don't want other employees talking about it or even mentioning it on the air. To an extent it's newsworthy but aside from whatever intentions, KO may have been restricted in what he COULD say about his coworker.

O'Reilly isn't smart enough to know what he's saying. He operates from the unconscious. Most people have enough of a consciousness to know that the word "lynching" is offensive to African Americans. Deep down he's an angry White America Firster. Every now and then, his racial prejudice comes bubbling out. When Biden made his remarks about Obama, he was also acting without consciousness. The difference is that Biden lacks that deep seated anger and resentment.

Billo is a "Do As I Say, Not As I Do Republican", He calls himself a "Social Conservative", there is however nothing social, or conservative in the policies of the rightwing, radical Republicans. They will do and say what they wish without regard for human decency. Unfortunately, Hillary has taken on these characteristics. She,and Bill will say and do anything to destroy Obama's Campaign, which is frankly what changed my wife's decision about voting for her.
