Advice For Hillary: Negative Or Positive?

Before Hillary Clinton took the mike at a Youngstown, Ohio rally last Wednesday, International Association of Machinists leader Thomas Buffenbarger verbally eviscerated Barack Obama in what his staff diplomatically dubbed "a tough speech for tough guys."

"Obama is no Mohammed Ali. He took a walk every time there was a tough vote in the Illinois state senate," Buffenbarger declared. "That's what a shadow boxer does. All the right moves, all the right combinations, all the right footwork --- but he never steps into the ring. He walks away from the fight."

The union president, his voice dripping contempt, escalated the attack. "I've got news for all the latte-drinking, Prius-driving, Birkenstock-wearing trust-fund babies crowding in to hear him speak," he said referring to the multitudinous crowds that Obama has been drawing. "This guy won't last a round against the Republican attack machine. He's a poet, not a fighter."

Buffenbarger's aggressive barking, in the parlance of campaign politics, was the predictable sounds of "a third-party attack dog." The fact that he is a supporter -- but not a campaign employee or strategist -- gives his candidate some old-fashioned plausible deniability. Simply put, Buffenbarger was free to say things that neither the candidate nor her campaign can or would say on the record. The problem for Clinton is that Buffenbarger's distance from the campaign, and the distance of other third party surrogates, makes their attacks less newsworthy.

But with Clinton now lagging in the delegate hunt and in the popular vote, with every trend line running against her, and with Obama still gaining strength as the crucial Texas and Ohio primaries loom less than two weeks away, the pressure on the former First Lady to toss a barrage of grenades at Obama - to "go negative in a big way" -- has only intensified. In the opinion of a number of her backers, she needs to inflict real damage on Obama real soon.

The contemptuous portrayal by the machinist leader of Obama as weak-kneed - a politician who "could act like a friend of the working man even as he danced to the tune dictated by billionaires" - is only one of several fronts in the Clinton campaign's drive to dirty-up her challenger.

Another is the quieter but potentially more deadly effort to persuade the press to do the heavy lifting, with Clinton campaign operatives suggesting stories about 1960s radicals who have backed Obama, and about Obama's acknowledged cocaine use.

A third front is the creation of an "independent" so-called 527 committee, funded by undisclosed rich donors -- the American Leadership Project -- to run pro-Hillary, anti-Obama television commercials, thus lessening the significance of the widening money gap between a surging Obama and a stagnant Clinton.

The consensus among Democratic and Republican strategists interviewed for this article was that whatever she does, Clinton faces an uphill struggle.

Their views varied widely, however, on the kind of strategies that have the best chance of working and those that do not.

"She has very few options left," said Mark McKinnon, a former Democrat who was a high-ranking media consultant in both of George W. Bush's presidential campaigns. " She should be very aggressive and throw every punch she's got on substance, on record, on experience. She should use third parties, her husband, everybody. March 4 [the date of the Texas and Ohio primaries] is her last stand and she better unload now or she won't have another chance. All that said, I think it may be impossible to slow Obama's momentum at this point."

Democratic pollster Mark Mellman was less sure about the effectiveness of such a no-holds barred approach. He noted that "first she has to determine whether going negative in any way is worth it. Can she hold her base in Ohio and Texas without it? The evidence from Wisconsin would certainly indicate what she did there didn't help her."

Indeed, exit polls from last week's Wisconsin primary showed that 54% of Democratic voters thought that Clinton had been unfairly negative in her campaigning.

Mellman added that if Clinton does decide to "draw a contrast, it probably needs to be big, fundamental, principled and narrative -- not petty, harsh, or merely some disconnected fact. Third parties are better sources," he said. "But they (other than President Clinton) won't attract as much attention. It's a tradeoff. If the line of attack is of the kind I outlined, she probably has to drive it herself."

Conservative publicist Craig Shirley called for a take-no-prisoners approach: "She doesn't have a choice. In order to take the village, she will have to destroy it . . . .The nuances of third parties or Bill's role, she is past all that. She has to hit Barack with everything from every angle."

Republican pollster Bill McInturff suggested a more high-minded tone. "If there were any meaningful policy differences," he said. "They should be highlighted. People don't see those as 'negative.' So, like their health care 'difference,' that's fair game."

But, McInturff argued, "the Clinton folks are just stuck, because [she and Obama] are both unbelievably liberal candidates and there are no meaningful issue differences." The result, he said, is a campaign dominated by "ridiculous" accusations of plagiarism or that Obama is reneging on a promise to accept public financing in the general, issues, he said, "that do not move voters and [are] not going to help her at all."

McInturff, who worked for George H. W. Bush in 1992, noted with some pleasure that "having endured the Clinton campaign in 1992, this is very satisfying to watch happen to her now in this campaign."

A Democratic strategist neutral in the presidential campaign advised the former First Lady to try something completely different. Instead of all-out war, why not kill Obama him with kindness? From the chummy tone of Thursday night's televised debate from Texas, it looks like this is the advice she took.

I think the best part of watching Hillary get kicked while she is down is that her name recognition got her this far but as Americans they did not see one HUGE flaw in their idea of succession. We as Americans hate entitlement. HATE it. And the idea that a NY Senator who got that job based on succession would get the top job in the country based on her husband's name and some experience is Un-American. W Bush getting the job was Un-American. Her 'machine' losing to Obama is so Magically American and the rest of the world is watching as an honest man is handed the job based on no name recognition and all heart and dedication.. It is amazing and I hope the Clintons get behind him soon because he is already leading this country which is why I already voted for him in TEXAS.

Yes, Americans hate entitlement, so I was dismayed through Super Tuesday when Hillary was getting at least 50% of the Democratic votes. Then I was afraid that the American public really were going to give Bill and Hillary a third and probably fourth term for a total of up to 16 years as co-presidents. I kept looking in the main stream media for people to come right out and make objection to that. Maybe some did, but I sure didn"t see it and there certainly wasn"t a huge outcry, as I thought there should be. We are fortunate that the Primaries were not all on the same day early on when too many were apparently voting based on name recognition. Apparently that was trumping objection to entitlement.

I don't believe Barack Obama is an "honest man." I believe he's a Chicago pol with all the ruthlessness that position requires as evidenced when he brutishly engineered the removal from the ballot of his own mentor, Alice Palmer. He's not so much honest as unscrutinized by a media circus that fell to their knees in adoration instead of doin their jobs. I don't care if the Clinton's do endorse Obama and ask for unity, I won't be swayed. I consider him unprepared and unqualified. I consider too many of his supporters to be viciously and vocally anti-Clinton. The wounds are too deep to heel. I will never vote for Obama under any circumstances.

Note to samuraijack;
Forget your valium today? It sounds like you hate Hillary Clinton the female contender more than you do Senator Clinton the Democratic contender. If you subscribe to the cult of personality and base your likes and dislikes on that alone what is your vote based on? It seems you haven't been doing your political homework.

You got to love these single track minded political consultants. If hitting it with a hammer hasn't worked up to this point the problem must be that you aren't swinging the hammer hard enough.

Every time that Hillary has upped the mean factor, or had Bill do it for her, it has backfired. So the answer is to be even nastier!

If Hillary wants to make a splash with the remaining democratic voters and superdelegates she needs to really let loose...on McCain. The one thing that will turn things around for certain for Hillary is to convince folks that she is the one who can not just beat the stuffing out of McCain but draw in a significant majority of both houses on their coattails.

No ammount of harping about little details regarding their health care plans is going to convince anybody that Clinton is the one that can do a better job against McCain.

Maybe you should apply that to obama as well. He's only a democrat because he would never get nominated as a republican. He blames a fellow dem for the Iraq mess, when we all know who is responsible. He called the GOP the "party of ideas." He panders to republicans.
Hillary isn't doing this for the money, she's already quite wealthy. She is not doing it for fame, she is famous worldwide.
Could it be that she sees her country in peril and wants to help???

Hillary, realizing that her negative attacks did not go over so well, decided to play the sweet ending. If I hear any more gushing about what a great closing speech she made, I will need a sedative. She was way too early - the Acadamy Awards show isn't until Sunday !

Enjoyed reading this. For once, Clinton is not disparaged as a piece of trash, but simply critiqued on her strategy and tactics (or lack thereof). I'm surprised at how many times she's been asked in a debate to explain why she thinks Obama isn't ready to be president and she always demures. What's up with that? The guy spent one year in the U.S. senate before hitting the campaign trail, and only a handful of voters even realize that about him. And every time he blathers on about having opposed the 2002 authorization to to go war in Iraq, she never comes back with the obvious: "Well, Barack , you didn't take your seat in the senate until 2005, and there's a big difference from stating a personal opinion and having to make a decision on behalf of the state that was attacked by terrorists on 9-11." Let's see, I think she should have filed a complaint of unlawful bias with the F.C.C. the day after the entire national media blacked out news of her big Florida win (that had to have been coordinated among the networks), and she should have put out an attack ad on the Exelon radiation leaks legislation that Obama watered down. That one spot would deep-six his chances in any state, no matter how many Republicans Karl Rove has organized to crossover and vote for him. Speaking of Rove, I've posted an article about the connections between him and Obama at thecityedition.com. Here's a direct link:

Time for 90's nostalgia.... Remember those great years?
The balanced budget and the surplus in the US Treasury...The same years when my business was growing like mad for all those years... I was hiring and expanding. Those years when we had relative peace and the Camp David talks looked like they might break new ground. Those years when I heard my First Lady speak out with a strong voice that it is time to face the facts on civil rights and women's rights, for freedom for and from religion, and those years when we enjoyed a welcoming handshake from most of the world. I will never forget those years. We loved the Clintons.
.
Bill left office with a 70 % approval of the American people. That's uniting , baby. I want that for our children, for our vets, for all of us. Hillary will be our next POTUS. If you agree go help Hillary help us all.

Alot of the youth voters who have swarmed into camp Obama were too busy watching Teletubbies, and Barney to notice too much about the state of the nation back then. But all the nice toys they had like the nintendos, and $100 dollar air-Jordans(Not to mention college tuitions)were because of the economic prosperity that their parents enjoyed under the Clinton White House.

Crying version 3.0. Another disgraceful moment from Billary. She was lying about the event for the wounded soldiers, as it is documented that she arrived 15 mins late and did not see the entrance. Also how hypocritical of her in that her vote authorized the war and the subsequent injuries. Not to mention crying about her husband's infidelities. A completely staged shameless woman. In just ten days, Billary will be history and we all should celebrate.

If I recall correctly, the great economic boom was due to a soaring stock market and extraordinary growth in the computer/tools/Internet sectors, not to the brilliance of Clinton-Gore fiscal policies.
Bill Clinton does get credit for trying to do something about the budget deficit, but so much else was wrong with his presidency. He supported NAFTA & the WTO; he pushed through budgets that cut social services spending; he did nothing to bring down the Pentagon budget; his managed-care approach to health care was a disaster that ended up alienating everyone. Not to mention, his last years were marred by scandal. We need to bid the Clintons goodbye.

I cannot agree with you more. Hillary was one of the most influential First Ladies this country has ever seen. Outside of Eleanor Roosevelt, no other First Lady has fought more for human rights than Hillary. One need only remember when she went to China and told the Chinese people how poorly they treated their women including babies. Now, come on women, think of how much the dynamics would change for the positive if Hillary became president. I guarantee women's rights would not go nearly as far with either McCaine or Obama as president than if Hillary became president. If you want equal rights for women, and you don't want to wait much longer to break through that glass ceiling, then vote for Hillary. Don't lose out on this chance.

Barack Obama and campaign contributor Antoin "ToSen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) and Antoin "Tony" Rezko, a shady Chicago, Illinois, political fund-raiser, have been "friends" for 17 years. As a lawyer at the small Chicago law firm Davis Miner Barnhill & Galland,[1] Obama "worked on low-income housing deals involving Rezko's company" Rezmar Corp. Rezko "has been Obama's political patron since he ran for the Illinois Senate a dozen years ago. Obama has apologized for buying a piece of property from Rezko's wife [in 2006] to expand his yard," the Chicago-Sun Times reported April 23, 2007.[2]

"Obama, who has worked as a lawyer and a legislator to improve living conditions for the poor, took campaign donations from Rezko even as Rezko's low-income housing empire was collapsing, leaving many African-American families in buildings riddled with problems -- including squalid living conditions, vacant apartments, lack of heat, squatters and drug dealers," Novak wrote.[3]

"Rezmar kept getting city and state funding, even as earlier projects fell into disrepair and financial troubles. But their company, Rezmar Corp., did come up with $1,000 to give to the political campaign fund of Barack Obama, the newly elected state senator whose district included the unheated building," Novak wrote.[3]

The problem with all these aging politicians is that they've never really fought a campaign via the web before. Going negative worked in pure print, or the purely broadcast station age. There was a 24-hour cycle to get the next barbs ready (print) or at least 4-6 hours (alphabet TV). Now, we can find out the facts in warp speed.

On the debate issues, this was one of Hillary's best moments....((((()))))
Hillary wrapped up very cleanly her differences with what we as a party want, need and ,at one time a few months ago, felt was the number 1 or 2 issue with voters.

UNIVERSAL healthcare.
It's Universal or is the mess we have now. The issue is black and white. You can't be a little Universal like you can't be a little pregnant.
She has conquered this issue.
She can get 'er done.

I have watched Hillary refine her plan and her message over the years and months. All the false arguments they leveled at her years ago... she addressed them. She answered every last one. Gracefully. You didn't even see it happening.
Hillary is already my President. Believe.

On universal health care Obama always claims the reason people don't have coverage is because they can't afford it. But according to a study from the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation 50% people earning up to $186,000 will not buy coverage on their own if they don't get it through their employer. Many of Obama's young supporters that don't get group-coverage from their job will not buy their own coverage, putting their health-care burden on the rest of us.

That's not the point. Any president can declare he wants universal health care. It's a matter of working with both sides of the house that counts.
