Updated -- Watch the full report below:

"A Republican operative in Alabama says Karl Rove asked her to try to prove the state's Democratic governor was unfaithful to his wife in an effort to thwart the highly successful politician's re-election," CBS's Scott Pelley reports for 60 Minutes. "Rove's attempt to smear Don Siegelman was part of a Republican campaign to ruin him that finally succeeded in imprisoning him, says the operative, Jill Simpson."

Simpson speaks to Scott Pelley in her first television interview, to be broadcast on "60 MINUTES" Sunday, Feb. 24, at 7 p.m. ET/PT, on the CBS Television Network.

Simpson spoke to Pelley because, she says, Siegelman's seven-year sentence for bribery bothers her. She recalls what Rove, then President Bush's senior political adviser, asked her to do at a 2001 meeting in this exchange from Sunday's report.

"Karl Rove asked you to take pictures of Siegelman?" asks Pelley.

"Yes," replies Simpson.

"In a compromising, sexual position with one of his aides," clarifies Pelley.

"Yes, if I could," says Simpson.

Story continues below

Simpson found no evidence of infidelity "despite months of observation," CBS reports.

But the case goes far beyond lurid photos. Simpson, the GOP operative, alleged in a sworn statement to the House Judiciary Committee last year that "she heard a close associate of Rove say that the White House political adviser 'had spoken with the Department of Justice' about 'pursuing' Don Siegelman, a former Democratic governor of Alabama, with help from two of Alabama's U.S. attorneys. Siegelman was later indicted on 32 counts of corruption, convicted on seven of them, and is currently serving an 88-month sentence in Federal prison."

Time magazine reported:

If Simpson's version of events is accurate, it would show direct political involvement by the White House in federal prosecutions -- a charge leveled by Administration critics in connection with the U.S. attorney scandal that led to the resignation of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. But her account is disputed; those who she alleges told her about Rove's involvement during a G.O.P. campaign conference call claim that no such conversation took place. Rove himself has not responded to Simpson's allegations, which are clearly based on second-hand information, and the White House has refused to comment while Siegelman's case remains on appeal.

Also in the sworn statement, Simpson...

...recalls conversations in early 2005 with Rob Riley, Jr., son of Alabama's current Republican governor, over his father's coming gubernatorial race, in which Siegelman appeared to be the top Democratic challenger. The younger Riley, she says, told her that his father and Bill Canary, the state's top Republican political operative and a longtime friend of Rove, contacted Rove in late 2004, after which he intervened with the Justice Department's Public Integrity section to push for criminal prosecution of Siegelman. Months later, in May 2005, Siegelman was indicted, setting off a chain of events that led to his imprisonment and the end of his political career.

Simpson also claims Riley, Jr., named the judge who would eventually be assigned to the case, and says Riley told her the judge would "hang Don Siegelman" because of a grudge against the former governor.

Holy shit!
political prisoners on top of everything else.

Karl Rove better find a nice place to hide, because George Bush wont be president for much longer. The minute Bush is out of the way, The wolves will be ready to attack this evil son of a bitch with everything they have.
For political prisoners like Don Siegelman, to the many families that have been destroyed by Rove's Fascist politics.
Mr Rove, your enemies have not gone away, instead they wait with patience and preparation.

Whichever DEMOCRAT becomes president we have to push them hard for the prosecution of this corrupt gang of thieves and murderers in the Rove White House.

To do that, we must have a Democratic Congress, too, and demand that real CHANGE means prosecuting these thugs, not just moving on.

That's why the telecom eavesdropping is so critical to the repugs. They need to be able to blackmail those who take over. Keep the pressure on your sens and reps to not allow telecom immunity. Email your telecom and isp and ask them to tell you what they have turned over to Bushcom. Go on record.
Interesting that www.whnt.com site is down. That's the station that aired 48 minutes instead of 60 minutes.

It has been reported that there is a Jack Abramoff connection to this case too. Oh what a tangled web we weave.

Information regarding the Abramoff-Riley-Casino case :
Choctaws spent $13 million to elect Riley, Senate
reports
By Phillip Rawls Associated Press Writer June 29, 2006

A U.S. Senate committee reported that disgraced Washington lobbyist
Jack Abramoff told a tribal leader that the Mississippi Band of Choctaw
Indians spent $13 million to elect Gov. Bob Riley in 2002.

The Senate Indian Affairs Committee issued a lengthy report that quotes
William Worfel, former vice chairman of the Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana,
as saying that Abramoff told him that Mississippi Choctaw Chief Phillip
Martin had spent the money "to get the governor of Alabama elected to
keep gaming out of Alabama so it wouldn't hurt . . . his market in
Mississippi."

Each of us has two Senators and a congressperson, we MUST FLOOD THEIR OFFICES WITH EMAILS! Bury them with the demand that this TREASON be fully and publicly investigated. This makes Watergate look like a minor indiscretion, the man is in prison for eight years! I am as cynical about these pandering cowards as any of you, but they're all we've got, we must make them vertebrates, or our experiment will end badly.

I would love to see Edwards as Attny Gen going after Bush/Cheney/Rove and all of their scumbag accomoplices. Unfortunately, Bush will be spending his last few weeks in office giving out thousands of pardons to all of his republican criminals. It will make Clinton's abuse of pardons look like childs play in comparrison. Then on 1/19/2009 Bush will resign so President Cheney can pardon him. Bush will be laughing his ass off on 1/21/2009 when he is hired as a "consultant" for Haliburton, Hunt Oil and a hundred other companies. They will give him hundreds of millions of Euros in "signing bonuses" that they have been keeping in the bank for him over the past eight years. And there is nothing we can do about it. We will be paying for his free health care, presidential pension and secret service protection while he sits in Crawford counting his money and laughing at us all. Who said crime doesn't pay.

Generally correct, but Bush would have to be convicted of his crimes before he could be pardoned.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:24 PM on 02/25/2008

I wish you were right but I've actually taught on the subject before and you don't have to be convicted of anything to be pardoned. They don't even have to say what a person is being pardoned for. If a president wants they can give anyone a blanket pardon for all crimes committed over any prior length of time that they care to name. It's unlimited and unappealable unless you change the constitution. After someone is given a blanket pardon you can find all the evidence you want of as many murderous acts as you can imagine. It won't mean a thing. It is absolute and it's a load of crap. The constitution should be amended so that a president can't pardon anyone who served in their administration.

Everyone should be contacting their federal and state representatives, whether democrat or republican, to mandate the Sigelman case be investigated. These evil acts will only continue if we allow those involved to get away with it.

The next President must hold those responsible for all the evil acts against our country, and world, accountable for their evil actions or they will only continue to plan and devise new acts for the future.

Iran/Contra was never dealt with and the evil actions against Iraqi and other state citizens continued into future republican and democratic administrations. The broadest banking and media deregulation occurred during the 90's as well, which created the platform to implement the evil acts that continue today, without our knowing, and cause much suffering.

60 minutes should be applauded for doing this story, while receiving threats from the administration to force their hand against the publication of this story. The program segment pertaining to Siegelman was blacked out in Alabama, which in itself was a controlling mechanism by the state goverment to hide the truth and guilt of those in power from their citizens.

All those involved should be impeached and imprisoned for this human tragedy. After all, these evil acts can be forced and implemented against anyone if we continue to allow them to go on without justice!!!!

Please call your state and federal representatives immediately to investigate the Sigelman case and help this man receive the justice that each of us would hope to recieve if we, or a family member, were in his place!!!!

What is sad is the lack of outrage by the public, the Democratic leaders, the media, and true law abiding patriotic Republicans. In other words; the American people. How can we watch the halls of justice be co-opted by such despicable fascist crooks and not rise out of our chairs in protest? How can the likes of DiFi and Chuck Schumer support sending to justice another scumbag like Mukasey? How can Nancy Pelosi smuggly take impeachment off the table and turn a deaf ear and a blind eye to enforcing the Constitution when it has so clearly been violated? Who are we that our politicians and the citizenry no longer seem to care about the erosion and manipulation of the very foundations of our country; i.e. its courts and laws? We're in a sorrowful state.

There have been so many cases where I've thought to myself "now this, THIS will be the straw that breaks the back of this horrible camel called the bush administration." It hasn't happened yet. I predict everything will come out about a year AFTER anyone involved could be convicted by the truth.

I disagree. People are so pissed right now about what's going on that as soon as Bush gets back to Texas in '09 we are going to demand Congress file criminal charges against each and every one of them.

We are expecting it. We will demand it!

Democrats aren't afraid of the Republicans, they are afraid of the Democrats.

They know the voters would turn on them in a minute if the Republicans attack them. Look at John Kerry, Look at Max Cleland, Look at Bill and Hillary Clinton. You sheep are so easily swayed and Karl Rove is flipping you the bird because he has you figured out.

You spend hours on the Internet trashing the very people who have spent a lifetime trying to help you and you fall in love with a "Snake oil salesman" backed by people who are promoting their own agenda.

Look behind MoveOn.org to find the real truth. It's out there.

It's interesting that you think this. If you watched 60 Minutes you'd see that the people making the charges are Republicans not Democrats. If Karl Rove is your idea of what is acceptable in politics you are worse than an idiot. I can only imagine the howls from the likes of you and people like you if the Democrats attempted anything so criminal. Why don't you wise up and smell the coffee or is your head so thick that nothing can penetrate?

There are no more words left to describe this truly despicable creature called Carl Rove. But as much as he is Satan, we (the American people) are to blame too for the current state of affairs.

While everyone was busy watching movies (um, remember Wag the Dog?), downloading songs before Napster shut down, buying the latest gadgets/junk we don't need, navigating the technology vortex, obsessing over Britney Spears, arguing if steroids should be illegal - the Repuglicans have been secretly waging their plans to make a few tight blue-blooded cronies with connections very rich. We let this happen before our very eyes, and did not demand that these things be brought out in the open and to justice. I am still amazed how President Bush has not yet been impeached.

Hopefully this is a hard lesson we learn, and put the right person in office to make the right changes in direction so we can restore credibility to our country and people.

I, along with many others, am still amazed Georgie was ever made president!! The repubs. must think everyone shares their so called "family values" and runs around on their spouses. Rove is a slimy squishy, dirt-bag. We do not know 1/2 of the lowdown dirty tricks he has done, and is still doing. When asked why she voted for Georgie tto be pres. before the Supreme Court, Sandra Day O'Connor said "I have been friends with the older Bush's, and did not want to see them disappointed"!!!! Maybe the Supreme's need mental evaluations after years on the bench. So, rather than upset GHW and Beautiful Mind Barbara, she threw the country down into the sewer. Surely it was obvious to her, since she had been friends with the family, that Jr. was below average?
