Updated -- Watch the full report below:

"A Republican operative in Alabama says Karl Rove asked her to try to prove the state's Democratic governor was unfaithful to his wife in an effort to thwart the highly successful politician's re-election," CBS's Scott Pelley reports for 60 Minutes. "Rove's attempt to smear Don Siegelman was part of a Republican campaign to ruin him that finally succeeded in imprisoning him, says the operative, Jill Simpson."

Simpson speaks to Scott Pelley in her first television interview, to be broadcast on "60 MINUTES" Sunday, Feb. 24, at 7 p.m. ET/PT, on the CBS Television Network.

Simpson spoke to Pelley because, she says, Siegelman's seven-year sentence for bribery bothers her. She recalls what Rove, then President Bush's senior political adviser, asked her to do at a 2001 meeting in this exchange from Sunday's report.

"Karl Rove asked you to take pictures of Siegelman?" asks Pelley.

"Yes," replies Simpson.

"In a compromising, sexual position with one of his aides," clarifies Pelley.

"Yes, if I could," says Simpson.

Story continues below

Simpson found no evidence of infidelity "despite months of observation," CBS reports.

But the case goes far beyond lurid photos. Simpson, the GOP operative, alleged in a sworn statement to the House Judiciary Committee last year that "she heard a close associate of Rove say that the White House political adviser 'had spoken with the Department of Justice' about 'pursuing' Don Siegelman, a former Democratic governor of Alabama, with help from two of Alabama's U.S. attorneys. Siegelman was later indicted on 32 counts of corruption, convicted on seven of them, and is currently serving an 88-month sentence in Federal prison."

Time magazine reported:

If Simpson's version of events is accurate, it would show direct political involvement by the White House in federal prosecutions -- a charge leveled by Administration critics in connection with the U.S. attorney scandal that led to the resignation of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. But her account is disputed; those who she alleges told her about Rove's involvement during a G.O.P. campaign conference call claim that no such conversation took place. Rove himself has not responded to Simpson's allegations, which are clearly based on second-hand information, and the White House has refused to comment while Siegelman's case remains on appeal.

Also in the sworn statement, Simpson...

...recalls conversations in early 2005 with Rob Riley, Jr., son of Alabama's current Republican governor, over his father's coming gubernatorial race, in which Siegelman appeared to be the top Democratic challenger. The younger Riley, she says, told her that his father and Bill Canary, the state's top Republican political operative and a longtime friend of Rove, contacted Rove in late 2004, after which he intervened with the Justice Department's Public Integrity section to push for criminal prosecution of Siegelman. Months later, in May 2005, Siegelman was indicted, setting off a chain of events that led to his imprisonment and the end of his political career.

Simpson also claims Riley, Jr., named the judge who would eventually be assigned to the case, and says Riley told her the judge would "hang Don Siegelman" because of a grudge against the former governor.

Let me see if I've got this right.

KKKKarl Rove collects naked pictures of male politicians. And he justifies that lurid obsession by claiming he's trying to get ammunition to use against them?

Does he also collect naked pictures of men who are not politicians?

Does he collect movies of naked men?

And he gets paid for this? Don't let that out in the Castro in San Francisco or there will be thousands of men out for his job. Because in the Castro District, all the men look at naked pictures and movies of other men just for fun. Not that I'm suggesting that's what Karl is doing.

Oh Karl, you bad boy.

And so, what do we do about this? I hear a lot of people calling for impeachment of Bush and Cheney. And now this. It doesn't seem to me that any one is willing to make these criminals accountable. I'm tired of reading about what they have done and not one person of note will do anything about it.

Exactly Tiger. They're all a bunch of lily livered assholes starting with Pelosi (Impeachment is off the table). I hope there is some mechanism to go after theses crooks when this regime is over.

i have a weird feeling that senior democratic members of congress are being blackmailed too. can't prove it at all, but it would speak to why they've been caving in to Bush Inc since the 2006 election.

The Republican Party and Bush's criminal enterprise should come under the full aegis of the RICO ACT.

We have HuffPo contributor Larisa Alexandrovna to thanks for helping keep this story alive while it's been mostly ignored by the press.

Just wish HuffPo would feature Larisa's posts more often!

thanks to Larisa, I've been following this story for about 4 months now, I read through as many of the documents I could find, including all news stories and believe there is signficant strong evidence to support a find of prosecutorial abuse, however or whomever influenced the behavior of the justice department. I have some very interesting ideas that go beyond the 60 minute story and hope that the story gets legs this week. Dan and his family can all use support, his daughter in particular is very courageous.

Leaving aside the criminal behavior of Rove, Cheney, Bush, et. al., I want to know why former governor Siegelman is still in prison. This situation is very reminiscent of Susan McDougal sitting in prison for over a year because she wouldn't play along with Kenneth Starr's Inquisition! I was about to mail in a request to subscribe to Newsweek, when I found out that Rove had just joined up there as a columnist. In the immortal words of Tony Soprano, "fugeddaboutit!!"

And he is kept in one of the Federal prisons that doesn't allow contact with anyone but pre-approved relatives, no press allowed. This was after they moved him from prison to prison so for a while even his lawyers weren't able to track him down.

I don't know if this man is innocent, it is Alabama politics, but there are so many red flags on this that it is likely he is innocent of the charges he was convicted on.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:42 PM on 02/22/2008

exactly, very far away from his family. fyi they kept Susan McDougle's husband in a prison in another state, medicated. He allegedly died of a heart attack. Allegedly.

Good for you, Robiform, for boycotting Newsweek. I have subscribed for quite awhile and am just appalled at their choice of Rove as a columnist; by doing so they have extended his "legitimacy." They might as well hire a member of the Mafia to write a column. Is John Gotti still alive?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:55 AM on 02/23/2008

robiform - EXACTLY, or the woman who was a petty criminal who hung out with the state troopers in AK for Bill, who became a witness to the murders of the four young boys (aged 12) who were murdered after stumbling across either a money or drug drop at the airport. She was sent to prison by a prosecutor, self-appointed, who is alleged to be part of the cover up. She got 30 years. You can see this witness testify on the 11 part "the Clinton Chronicles" on uTube right now. I am not sure how long it will remain there... anyway, the abuse by prosecutors goes back 50 years in our country. It is just more blatant, but more visible through mass media, and so I believe but for the internet and some brave whistleblowers this story would have never seen the light of day.

If Karl Rove had not found employment as a slimy, sluggish, pudgy snake, doing character "hits" for his idol, George W Bush, I can't help but wonder what else he would be qualified to do for a living??
He has been destroying people's personal lives since he was the unattractive, out-of-shape creep in highschool and college, who no girl would date, so he chose this path to get back at all those people who didn't love him.
Karl Rove will end up in the very hottest room in Hell for hurting so many people, on purpose, for his own giggles.
He is reprehensible, though that seems to be the essential trait on a line in a resume that qualifies him to work for George W. Bush.
Trash. He's trash.

I have long believed that abuse of power in public office ought rightfully be defined as treason. If these degenerates, of either party, were facing life in prison, commutable only by full and verifiable disclosure, we may see a paradigm shift. At the very least, the ensuing feeding frenzy would make an excellent reality show. Hannibal Lecter comes to mind. We can't change this slime into a higher life form, but perhaps a profit motive can make it useful. Chianti, anyone?

We know how these people do business. It's why we cannot allow the telecoms to have immunity. If they were wiretapping before 9/11, there's only one reason for them to have been doing it--dirt.

This is how these gay nazis from the Skull&Bones/Bohemian Grove power axis maintain their power. Prostitution (Gannon), and sexual blackmail. Rove is known to frequent gay bars in D.C. and Georgetown. It's no secret. So very NAZI.

I'd be careful with this allegation, it is only a posting on a blog, and does not seem to have any more support, as much as I would like to believe it. Rove is his own worst enemy - his mouth. That is how you get into perjury land.

doug108 I agree as the immunity for telecoms is a dry run for immunity for those in Bush regime who are now being investigated,I mean really investigated by the department of justice for crimes lawyers may be acused of for abuse of their power ... i.e. John Woo who wrote the silly legal brief that tortue of enemy combatants did not violate Article 3 of the Geneva conventions (when it clear COVERS any combatant) and others who wrote or supported these views are on the hot seat now. I am hoping DOJ has guts to go the distance. This goes all the way to Cheney's pal lawyer, David Addington. If in fact anything is uncovered especially a death tied to use of torture authorized by such a lawyer or someone they work for, these crimes can be punishable through very long prison terms. I think Rove and Cheney are trying to think themselves out of a chinese puzzlebox, but it is interesting that the truth never lies, but when you lie, your lies betray you.

BushCo used thousands of well timed Lies to trick the world into the Iraq Invasion and occupation War Crime, among other crimes.

The "Justice Department" is now the private tool of the rethug conservative BushCo fascists.

If we don't impeach, Try, Convict and punish these fascist traitors, what's to stop them do it again and again? How will the USA get back it's Honor in the world? It only took 6 months for the Rethugs to treasonously impeach Clinton,

There will ALWAYS be enough time to impeach BushCO.
