Clinton, Obama Spar Over Obama Mailings

CINCINNATI — Hillary Rodham Clinton angrily accused her Democratic rival Saturday of deliberately misrepresenting her positions on NAFTA and health care in mass mailings to voters, adding, "Shame on you, Barack Obama."

Clutching two of Obama campaign mailings in her hand for emphasis, the former first lady said, "enough with the speeches and the big rallies and then using tactics that are right out of Karl Rove's playbook."

Obama defended the mailings as accurate and rejected Clinton's complaint as a political ploy. He said that despite her current criticism of NAFTA, she supported the trade agreement when it passed during her husband's administration.

"You can't be for something and take credit for an administration ... and then when you run for president say that you didn't really mean what you said way back then. It doesn't work like that," he said to cheers at a rally in Akron.

The long distance clash erupted as the two Democrats campaigned separately across Ohio, one of two big states with primaries on March 4.

Obama has won 11 straight primaries and caucuses, and some of Clinton's supporters have said she must win both Ohio and Texas next week to keep her hopes alive of winning the party nomination. Recent polls show Ohio is close, and Texas closer.

Clinton's frustration was evident as she criticized Obama in unusually strong terms _ a few days after ending a nationally televised debate by saying she was "honored to be here with" him in a historic race between a black man and a woman.

She said by his actions, Obama was giving "aid and comfort to the very special interests and their allies in the Republican Party who are against doing what we want to do for America."

"Meet me in Ohio," she said. "Let's have a debate about your tactics and your behavior in this campaign." The two are scheduled to debate next Tuesday in Cleveland.

In her criticism of Obama, she asked, "Since when do Democrats attack one another on universal health care?"

Obama had a ready reply to that. "Well, when she started to say I was against universal health care ... which she does every single day," he said.

Since late last year, Clinton has consistently attacked Obama's health care plan, saying it would leave 15 million Americans uninsured.

Clinton's advisers have repeatedly criticized the Obama campaign's mailings, both of which went out in the last several days.

One says her plan for universal coverage would "force" everyone to purchase insurance even if they can't afford it. Her plan requires everyone to be covered, but it offers tax credits and other subsidies to make insurance more affordable.

Obama's plan does not include the so-called "individual mandate" for adults, and he has argued that people cannot be required to buy coverage if they can't afford it. He has said his first priority is bringing down costs.

The Illinois senator's plan does include a mandate requiring parents to buy health insurance to cover children.

The second mailing, on the North American Free Trade Agreement, quotes a 2006 Newsday article suggesting Clinton believed the agreement had been a "boon" to the economy. NAFTA and other trade agreements are extremely unpopular in Ohio, which has suffered an exodus of blue-collar jobs to other countries in part due to such agreements.

It's a particularly sensitive matter for Clinton, whose husband championed and pushed for passage of the agreement as president. She is counting on the support of white, working class voters in the state.

"I am fighting to change NAFTA," she insisted. "Neither of us were in the Senate when NAFTA passed. Neither voted one way or the other."

Clinton said Newsday had corrected the record about her views on the agreement. Indeed, the paper published a blog item earlier this month saying Obama's use of the word "boon" was unfair.

"Obama's use of the citation in this way does strike us as misleading," the paper said. "The quote marks make it look as if Hillary said "boon," not us. It's an example of the kind of slim reeds campaigns use to try to win an office."

Earlier, Newsday published an item saying the word "boon" had been the paper's "characterization of how we best understood her position on NAFTA, based on a review of past stories and her public statements."

As evidence of their concern about the issue, the Clinton campaign released two new ads in Ohio, including one featuring John Glenn _ a former astronaut and U.S. senator from Ohio for 24 years _ saying Clinton would fix trade agreements like NAFTA.

Clinton said she felt good about her prospects in Ohio and Texas but refused to say whether she needed to win both states to stay in the race.

"Let's let the people of Ohio vote. Let's actually have an election and then we can look at the results," she said.

This makes me think how crazy Bill is. Now I know how he was able to stay composed from the Republican fire storm. Kinda like that commercial where the basketball coach is going off on the referee and doesn't faze him cause it's nothing compared to his wife at home doing the same! Is it that time of the month for HRC or what?

Hillary Clinton ended the Texas debate on a good note on Thursday evening. Afterward, an officer from her motorcade was killed in an unfortunate accident. Hillary Clinton temporarily suspended her campaign out of respect for the officer and his family. It was brought to her attention that these mailings had gone out and to make matters worse, it was brought to her attention that Barack Obama's financial supporters threatened to shut down the Wall Street Journal because they were prepared to print an article casting Sen. Clinton in a favorable light. As a supporter of Hillary Clinton's for nine years, I have never recieved a pamphlet with erroneous information from her campaign against an opponent. Trust me for her to win the senate here in NY was tough because she was up against the republican machines. She could have resorted to this tactic, but she did not nor has she ever done so. Obama DELIBERATELY kicked her when she was down about the unfortunate death of the officer who she openly acknowledged had given his life to protect hers. Many of you who post may not be aware of the entirety of the facts or may be choosing to ignore them for the opportunity to destroy all things Hillary. But I tell you this, as a supporter I defy all those who want her to step down in the name of the Democratic Party and demand that she stay for the long haul and make him work, grovel and beg for the nomination. No, now it is time for Hillary Clinton to rip off the gloves and with the blunt force of Ali, Frazier, Foreman, Holyfield, Tyson, Holmes, Lewis and Marciano deliver Obama one swift executioners blow to the ego and finish him for good. I no longer care about how she goes about it, I will close my eyes and cover my ears and breathe a sigh of relief when she has finally done him in. I will neither espouse him or vote for him and as for the Dem. Party: screw them! I will give my vote to McCain if Hillary loses and so will many other democrats. If you can't understand her anger towards Obama then you are not being fair minded. With tactics like taking down the Wall Street Journal, can you imagine now how all the so called myths about Obama were actually debunked? Coersion perhaps? Didn't you all say enough with Bush controlling the media? Now I question WHY you are voting for Obama when he is blatantly resorting to Bush's tactics controlling print and television journalism. Are you all 100% sure you will feel proud of yourselves in four to eight years. My belief is that you will all wake up in four years and wished you had supported her but she won't be around for you to beat down and kick her in the gut anymore. She will be sitting back with a smug smile watching all of you suffer for your inspirational choice,

Also, HuffPo must be having technical difficulties because it posted my piece @four times. I urge all of you to please read Roseanne Barr's article on HuffPo. Her argument is completely rational and very thought provoking.

So you don't agree with Clinton's policy? You are just voting for Clinton because she's a woman. It's quite evident in your post. You state you would vote for McCain who's policies are opposite Clintons rather than vote for Obama who's policies are almost identical.
How about you vote for our countries well being rather than your own personal vendetta.

I SUPPORT HILLARY CLINTON 1000%. MAKE NO MISTAKE!!

You need to stop perpetuating partisan politics. Hillary is the better candidate of the two and next in line is McCain. It obviously bothers you and others who emailed me that I have a strong sense of self and do not need people to tell me who to vote for. I can make up my mind on my own thank you very much. I have no vendetta, merely common sense, integrity and decency and to you who accused me of a vendetta and to others who ask me who is paying me to post,I say the same: my integrity, decency and independence are payment enough!! OBAMA'S POLICIES ARE NOT IDENTICAL TO HERS. Hillary Clinton's campaign has been classier and cleaner. Now you are angry with what happened today regarding the picture and you want to take it out on a Hillary supporter, too bad! He got what he deserved. Keep the fight going Hillary!!! Viva Hillary Clinton!!!

I know the Obama flock can't believe their savior might actually play dirty, but those flyers were deceptive, especially the one on health care that looked remarkably like the ads circulating in the early 90's against Hillary's healthcare plan. I am a Clinton supporter and have resigned myself to the fact that she will probably not get the nomination thanks to the wave of bloggers and media pundits who have criticized her every move. I would be frustrated if I were her too. I will not vote for Obama in November, rather abstain from the process.

Brace yourselves Obama-people.

Hillary and the media are planning to take Obama down tomorrow with the Larry Sinclair scandal, Right?

As for me, I didn't believe the guy and trust me, I'm not an Obama supporter. This Sinclair character is a nasty, hillbillish-looking gay/druggie, who was obviously paid to come up with this sick story. I mean if Sinclair were a young, handsome ivy-league type then I would probably buy it, but Obama allowing this guy to touch him would definitely require the "suspension of disbelief". LOL

Check out the "supposed" scandal video for yourself:

Larry Sinclair was in a MENTAL INSTITUTION when his incident supposedly happened. Obama would not be where he is if he wasn't patriotic. Michelle Obama has a whole lot to be proud of but was talking about the state of politics.

Michelle went to Princeton, worked as an executive, 2 beautiful children, has a husband who was in state gov for 8yrs, ran and won a senate seat, now running for the presidency and some MORON thinks she is not PROUD of her COUNTRY?

Logic would tell a person that either she mispoke or she is being taken out of context. It turns out she is talking about politics and she used the word REALLY as a qualifier.

Is this what they call a visceral reaction, shock, disbelieve, overwhelming sadness, speechless, a loss of all faith in any decency in this world. Maybe this is kind of hatred and gut repulsion people felt against her husband when they found out how he lied to the nation, and found out about his immoral conduct. I have never felt such disgust, and I do not know what to say or do. Let me get a hold of me then will post again.

AS to health care, I prefer what Kucinich proposed - single-payer, or medicare for everyone - but of the remaining 2 choices, I assume if I were an insurance lobbyist, I'd donate to Clinton - require everybody to buy insurance - hell yeah!

Please read a study at kff.org called "How Non-Group Health Coverage Varies With Income" It shows about 5% of very low-income people buy their own coverage when they don't get it from their employer, but it also shows only 49% of high-earners, to $186,000, will buy their own coverage, the rest just go without causing a drain on the system.
