McCain's Age May Play Role In His Choice Of VP

When it comes to senators hoping to make history with their presidential bids, Hillary Rodham Clinton (who would be the first woman to be president) and Barack Obama (who would be the first black president) are not the only ones. John McCain, 71, is hoping to become the oldest candidate ever elected to a first term in the White House.

The quest to win the presidency at an age when he would be too old to be a commercial airline pilot or even a judge in some states has already led Mr. McCain to adopt a more grueling campaign schedule, and a more vigorous style, than several of his younger rivals. Now that Mr. McCain is the presumptive Republican nominee, political analysts say, his age will most likely factor into his selection of a running mate.

Some suggested Mr. McCain might want to tap a younger running mate to balance the ticket, particularly if he were to face a young opponent like Mr. Obama, 46. Others said his age would simply heighten his need to choose somebody whom voters would feel comfortable with as president should anything happen to him. (Not to be morbid, but eight vice presidents have succeeded presidents who died in office.)

Mr. McCain said in a recent interview that he had not even settled on how the vice presidential selection process would work, let alone whom it might select, but added, "We all know that the highest priority is someone who can take your place."

The potential import of Mr. McCain's choice of a running mate has prompted a political parlor game of who would be the best fit for the ticket. Quite a few of the names being bandied about are those of politicians in their 40s and 50s, including Gov. Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota, 47; Gov. Charlie Crist of Florida, 51, whose well-timed endorsement helped Mr. McCain win the crucial swing-state's primary; Gov. Mark Sanford of South Carolina, 47; and Rob Portman, 52, a former Ohio congressman and director of the Office of Management and Budget

He is pale because he has had skin cancer and operations for it, and avoids the sun. He probably wears 50 or 70 sunblock. You can see the incisions when he has his regular biopsies. They run down the left side of his face about an inch or inch and a half.

I know the aggravation of avoiding the sun in the S.W. I have had 60 skin cancers, but not the serious kind, and had them all removed--and I live in New Mexico. I cover up, but McCain can't wear sun-protective clothes on the campaign trial, so he must wear sun block.

Sometimes he wears makeup to make himself look less pale, and he looks younger and more vigorous then.

So his pallor is hiding the real energy of the man--not that I'm "for" him in any way. I just know what skin cancer can change in your life, in Arizona for him.

.

Ah, I guess to counterweight his age, he's going to pick someone really young?

Can a fetus be a VP?

Yeap.

McDeath/Bush '07 = Jebbie.

That is how they will do it.

McBush/Romney '07

vs.

Obama/Edwards '08

or

Obama/Richardson '08

I must say, neither McCain (71) nor Nader (73) inspire me with longevity.

Ugh.

Considering he looks like death warmed over, I think it's amazing that he gets around the way he does, but will he continue to hold up? Thompson at least had the sense to act his age.

In actuary terms poor old McCain if elected will, at the swearing in ceremony, be 72 years and 5 months old, which means he has a very close to 40% chance of kicking the bucket from that moment on and by the end of the first term it rises to 50%. Of course it damn well matters whom he fingers for the V/P job. Nearly two years and millions of dollars have been spent to find a candidate that will represent the right wing of American politics and it comes down to his personal choice, be it good or bad, for this person without any primary vetting to become the leader of the most important nation in the world and we have the audacity to criticize other nations for similar follies. It is all too amazing if you stop to think about it.

Gov. Charlie Crist would be a good choice for VP. He is a moderate republican who is well liked by democrats, republicans, and independents in Florida. He consults with Democrats and has pushed policies to combat global warming. In fact, he has tried to undo all the damage inflicted on Florida by Jeb Bush.
The Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, which frequently surveys Florida voters, last polled about Crist's performance in October, when he had a 65 percent approval rating.
McCain could not do better that Crist as a running mate.

Hmm a governor for old people. This really will become the election of the young vs. the old.

If he really wants to offset his age, he'll have to pick one of the Olsen twins.

I've got it! Ted Stevens. He's still pretty spunky, and he needs to find asylum in the White House so he can invoke executive privledge for his past budgetary indiscretions.
