14 Years Later, Exxon Still Has Not Paid For Valdez Oil Spill

When a federal jury in Alaska in 1994 ordered Exxon to pay $5 billion to thousands of people who had their lives disrupted by the massive Exxon Valdez oil spill, an appeal of the nation's largest punitive damages award was inevitable.

But almost no one could have predicted the incredible round of legal ping-pong that only this month lands at the Supreme Court.

In the time span of the battle -- 14 years after the verdict, nearly two decades since the spill itself -- claimants' lawyers say there is a new statistic to add to the grim legacy of the disaster in Prince William Sound: Nearly 20 percent of the 33,000 fishermen, Native Alaskans, cannery workers and others who triumphed in court that day are dead.

Yes, the oil wells in TX and OK that are still functioning and not capped can only pump 500 gal
a month and then the owner gets paid by the government much like the farmer does for not producing! How insane is this. Why do we sell our own oil from Alaska to Japan? No, we don't have a shortage, we are mismanaging big time so the Hedge Fund People and congress/senate can get richer quick! No wonder they surpress anything progressive as in solar or battery technology or even engines like the genuine Wankel Engine stolen from Hitler.

They never had any intension of paying. They only take money....by "hook or by crook"....or anyway they can get it. They will even take back taxes they never paid in the first place.

There's something sick and wrong about a company that can make record profits on the backs of Americans, yet refuses to take care of their injury to the very ones who make those profits possible.

Well Duh.. Very seldom does any large corporation actually pay a fine. Fines by the Gov are issued to corporations to quell the public, nothing else.
If corporations actually paid all the fines that were levied against them the Gov would have more money for politicians to steal. And as it is, they are having to borrow from China just to have something to steal.
Fines are for us, the public, not the elitist corporate.

Why anyone would buy Exxon or Mobil Gas is beyond me??? They should have long been boycotted by the "Patriots of America". But no they're out supporting the troops and riding around in Hummers, Ford Expeditions and Chevy Tahoes.

I haven't bought Exxon since the Valdez incident and I have not bought Mobil since they went to the dark side with Exxon the Destroyers. I only buy Citgo. Go Chavez.

I have been calling my three members of Congress. my Representative and our two Senators for months about this problem. I have also been calling Democratic members of Congress in both house also. It is a disgrace that a American corporation with the largest net profits in history has not been made to pay its fines etc. It is not just a disgrace, it is immoral and illegal for Exxon to to do what the have been required to do my a Federal Court. They are trying to wait until there is no one to pay the fines to. We can't pay now because there is no one to pay to will become their answer. It is high time that Congress does something about this travesty of justice. I can't remember who said this, "Justice delayed is justice denied". I intend to spend this next week emailing and phoning everybody on my rolodex and in the Congressional phone book.

All I can say is SHAME ON YOU EXXON and Shame on us for doing nothing in this case of corporate greed.

Yes, but Alaska's Senator Ted STevens is probably the most corrupt of all of them, Representative Don Young is made out of the same weave and Senator Murkowski is not far behind. Granted she is hewer at the job but catching up quickly. Ted Stevens has friends in Congress who are Democrats that back him too...so don't expect anything soon. Exxon enjoyed a $42 Billion dollar bonus this year..they arent about to clean up their mess. Gawd. Now we will ses about the Supreme Court which is a bush controlled bunch of neo cons also.

The 2 trillion dollars wasted in the Iraq invasion and occupation war crime could have replace ALL electricity generation in the USA,

with solar and wind.

Energy Crisis Solved.

2 trillion dollars. current cost for solar 8$ per average watt, 2.5*10^11 watt.

current electric USA use: 2.3*10^11 watts.

Wind is much cheaper.

New Solar tech have begun shipping much less expensive solar.

If all the OIL wells that are capped in my state of Texas were opened up, we would have enough OIL for 50 YEARS without having to buy ONE DROP of OIL from the Middle East. Nope, that's too easy a solution, so no one will ever bring the subject up in Congress, let alone the White House Occupant.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:47 PM on 02/24/2008

all those low output wells were capped in the 80's because first the oil was too heavy, second the output was too low to be profitable. If farmers can be making tons of money off of cheap corn for ethanol the owners of those wells would open them up.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:13 PM on 02/24/2008

I disagree. There have been so many owners who lost their wells during the 1980s and most of the OIL wells here in Texas are owned by Billionaires, like Bush and Cheney and their friends, who have NO urge to uncap them or to build more refineries that can process this type of OIL.

19 years later, Exxon claims they spent 3.5 billion dollars to clean up Prince William Sound and that that's enough, even though their executives have admitted it was Exxon's fault.

And according to the mayor of Cordova, the beaches still have oil on them.

The past three Corporate American Presidents we've had (BCB), haven't done a thing to ensure Exxon cleaned up the mess they made.

The lawsuit's verdict has nothing to do with the responsibility Exxon has to clean up after themselves. Nothing.

I defy a single person who's ever travelled the Prince William Sound to deny that the original $5 billion was, if anything, inadequate to the damage done. 20 years after an Exxon tanker with an incompetent crew dumped 10.8 MILLION GALLONS of crude in possibly one of the most beautiful places on earth, Exxon refuses to pay even the whittled-down $2.5 billion dollars in damages. (And these people want to drill in ANWR?!) But, fear not, the Supreme Court is going to FIX it all up!

And of course, Shell-Mexico has purchased thousands of acres of sea floor off the Alaskan coast to dig for oil To hell with the enviornment, the Inuits and the polar bears along with all other species. This is why the decision on putting Polar Bears on the Endangered Species list was delayed over and over. In the middle of the night, these acres of seafloor were auctioned off just a couple of weeks ago. Oil Spills? Seems that this atrocity didn't make the MSM. I hate bush and his criminal pals. The influence seems to filter down to all other areas.

They should change their name to Pisson.

I don't blame them. Its not their fault that the captain that they hired was drunk. Why should they be responsible for the actions of one of their employees that created the greatest eco disaster in our lifetime and put hundreds of people out of work. As long as they can put off paying the bill, the more money that the government will let them make. Ever wonder who runs this country well now you know. Aren't you glad you elected representatives look out for our interests. Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.

'Ted Stevens Takes Aim At Exxon'

'Alaska Senator Ted Stevens is a busy guy, what with the FBI raiding his house and all. But recently he took time out of his regular pork-barrel business to return to the practice of law. Stevens is a Harvard Law school grad, and was a practicing lawyer before he was elected to Congress in 1964. He recently dusted off his law books and wrote an amicus brief on behalf of Alaska fisherpeople who sued Exxon after a drunk sea captain crashed its oil tanker, the Valdez, into Prince William Sound in 1989, spilling 11 million gallons of crude oil into the delicate ecosystem.'

Then:

'Sen. Stevens has written an amicus brief in support of the plaintiffs, drawing on his vast knowledge of maritime law that includes a law review article he wrote back in 1950, which is cited in the brief, according to the Wall Street Journal. Stevens told the Journal that he didn"t think the justices would actually look up his article, but that he wanted to establish that he had some expertise in the area. "I don"t imagine the justices look at these amicus briefs that much," he said.'

He wants the money in his state. That is what Ted Stevens is about. He does not care how many oil tankers, oil drilling sites or oil pipes are in his state as long as he gets money for them. He doesnt' care about the leaks and spills either. Someone should be sure to ask if the Native Alaskans got all the money they were promised. But try to find an honest person to tell you.

The statement "But almost no one could have predicted the incredible round of legal ping-pong that only this month lands at the Supreme Court" is nonsense. Anyone who knows anything about the history of Exxon could have predicted just such a manipulation of the legal system, particularly when one considers the make up of the current Supreme Court that will make the final decision. I predict that the court whose members gave us George W. Bush will rule in favor of his corporate sugar daddies at Exxon. I suspect, however, that the announcement of such a travesty of justice will be postponed until after the November general election so the Republican Party and its heroic nominee will not be tainted by still more evidence of corruption. (And, yes, I live in Alaska but have no legal claims to any of the money for damages that Exxon should have paid years ago!)

The article states:

'Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. owns Exxon stock and has recused himself from the case. That leaves eight (Supreme Court) justices to hear it, and an even split would mean that the award stands.'

The Bush Supreme Court at your service.

Exxon won't pay the bill for the spill, but they are ready to move into southern Iraq, into Basra, to start pumping that OIL. I guess they forgot there's a war going on in Iraq.

No, wait, they know there's a war going on in Iraq, but their first priority is to get the OIL, like Bushie boy promised they'd be getting. Funny how long it took for Exxon to wait in the wings while the "surge" was supposed to work and the Iraqis would all be one united government and happy that Exxon will be stealing their OIL and be giving them candy and flowers while the OIL goes to the highest bidder. So I guess that PSAs (Profit Sharing Agreements) are on with the Big OIL companies and the Green Zone, while the Iraqi citizens are using old herbal recipes for cures because they can't afford medicine. My, my, what a FINE job old Bushie's done. He sure knows how to destroy a country!

And here I always thought that Bush invaded Iraq so that they could become a democracy. Or was it because Saddam Hussein had those WMDs? Or was it because the Iraqis are in the Dark Ages and Bushie had to bring them into the light (by the by isn't saying much, when the average Iraqi only has a few hours of electricity every day, if they're lucky).

So now it's Exxon's turn to help the Iraqi "democracy" by stealing their OIL, all while smiling, talking and chewing gum at the same time. I wonder if Bushie can pull that off, since he's always got one thumb in his mouth and the other where the sun don't shine. If anyone believes that Exxon will pay the bill for the spill, then I've got an igloo in the tropics I want to sell you...

Unbelievable that Exxon has been fighting for 14 years - 14 years! to avoid paying what would be for them less than 1/2 year of profits!

And the article doesn't say, but how much money have they spent fighting this case in court for the last 14 years!?

Not to mention the lasting damage they caused to the people, their livlihood, and their ecological environment because of this gross abuse!

Conservative business practices at work, folks!
