As Dollar Slides, Some NY Merchants Say "Euros Only"

"Euros Only" reads a handmade sign in Billy's Antiques & Props on East Houston Street in Manhattan. But that's really just an attention grabber. Actually, owner Billly Leroy explains, the store will accept Canadian dollars and British pounds, and U.S. dollars, too.

Leroy is one of a small but growing group of New York merchants in tourist-favored neighborhoods such as SoHo, the East Village and Times Square who have begun to accept the euro and other foreign currencies.

With the dollar near its lowest rate ever against the euro and the numbers of international tourists in New York at all-time highs, some store owners figure accepting the euro offers a convenience to customers and sometimes generates a stockpile of a strong currency for themselves.

The liquor store owner Chu is taking a 15% commission on his euro exchange rate. European shops usually take a 5% commission when they accept dollars.

Fear not, the markets will work everything out, - 1% of the people will get 99% of the money.

The way God intended it.

It's pretty axiomatic: businessmen do not have access to the "magical money machine" that the American government THINKS it has. They are not able to "borrow from themselves" more than $1 million a minute, 24/7/365, as the United States Government does just to keep itself afloat.

Inflation can take many forms. In the 1910's, Germany printed tons of paper ... and they may as well have been printing toilet-paper, because the citizens used it for stove-fuel.

We shake our heads at such stories, yes?

We should not.

What is happening today is literally the same thing, but without the paper. Truly non-existent "loans" are made, by the expedient of entering two balancing entries into the government's ledger books and claiming that the money must be paid-back. ("See, it's a LOAN!") But of course what you are doing is printing money out of thin-air.

This flow of money on computer databases and ledger-books does not match the seriously-flawed (lack of) movement of tangible goods. It tries to mask the fact that the economic system has no redundancy, is severely unbalanced (except in the eyes of the computer), has no basis in fact.

Ordinary business-owners see this and understand this. They live with it. Literally, they live BECAUSE OF it.

THAT is "reality."

Ladies and Gentlemen, may I pose to you this question?

We take great care in making sure that our corporate leaders are accountable. We have recently passed many laws like RICO, HIPAA, Sarbanes-Oxley, and so-on specifically to regulate these important functions and to hold them to some standard of excellence in their financial, records management, and other core functions.

Yet there is no such "standard of excellence" in our Government... which over-arches them all.

We laugh and giggle at the "wretched excess" of these obviously-corrupt buffoons and we bury thousands of young men and women in government issue boxes. Yet we continue to tell ourselves that "it must be this way."

Why?

Most people in the U.S. are fearful and prefer to ACCOMODATE (as opposed to 'agitate'). The oligarchs have made sure that the DECLINE of the U.S. is materially comfortable--at a level--for most Americans.

Cable TV lull Americans into a passive stupor; mobile tel. afford contact with similarly afflicted; children crave peer acceptance over achievement; and all strive ONLY not to be the one "holding the bag...."

Besides, politicians listen ONLY to their patrons and ONLY strive for self-preservation as office holders...!

With the price of groceries rising and utilities we won't have any disposable dollars to buy CHEAP GOODS from anywhere. Those Oil Barons need to get richer and they had to steal the presidency first to accomplish this.
You got what you deserved, lack of education
and watching reality shows on TV!

This isn't what it appears. As is clear in the article, the stores are doing this for publicity.

And besides the point, have you ever gone to a foreign country and purchased items in your native currency? They ALWAYS give you a much worse rate than you'd get in a bank, or even your hotel. For example, the Euro is now about $1.48. Go to this store, they'll probably give you about $1.40 or less. They aren't doing it to be generous!!!

U.S. dollars in the form of paper money (also coins) are legal tender in the United States. Therefore U.S. merchants are required by law to accept them in payment for goods and services.

The decline in the dollar is good for the U.S. economy because it will make U.S. goods more competitive abroad and at home, thereby stimulate U.S. exports and discouraging the purchases of imported goods. This gives a powerful stimulus to the U.S. economy.

The decline in the dollar would indeed stimulate US exports if we, you know, actually made anything here.

I believe the same can be applied to anything actually grown. I understand the US agricultural Mid-West is no longer self-sustaining with respect to food. They seem to grow a lot of corn and feed lot beef. I have witnessed the export of a lot of grain, hay, corn, and animal hides. It's amazing to see garlic from China, seafood from Asia, peppers from the Mid-East, grapes from Chile, etc.

Adding to this national insult is Gilroy, CA, "The garlic capital of the world." It's my understanding that Gilroy currently imports most of the garlic from China. Production of US agricultural products seems to have joined that of machine tools.

On the bright side, the trade balance situation in the US will be self-correcting. The proper balance will occur when the US wages and benefits are on par with those of the Chinese worker.

You are actually wrong because China has intentionally depressed the value of their own currency in order to keep us from being competitive. In addition, by suppressing the value of their currency they are able to maximize the payout on the loans they gave the U.S. So although it theoretically should have helped us China's propensity to cheat the system has prevented it from truly occurring.

Billy's antiques is in a tent, he basically sells junk that the old junkies scrounge off of the street on heavy trash day. The owner is great at pretending to be hip, and definitely got some free advertisement with that sign.

I'm not a fan of the way Huffington Post keeps making these deceptive headlines. Turns out that it's not "Euros only"... don't be dishonest or deceptive. We have the MSM for that.

I think this is primarily a sales pitch to attract the many European tourists in NY.
