Nader Announces New Bid for White House

WASHINGTON — Ralph Nader said Sunday he will run for president as a third-party candidate, criticizing the top White House contenders as too close to big business and pledging to repeat a bid that will "shift the power from the few to the many."

Nader, 73, said most people are disenchanted with the Democratic and Republican parties due to a prolonged Iraq war and a shaky economy. The consumer advocate also blamed tax and other corporate-friendly policies under the Bush administration that he said have left many lower- and middle-class people in debt.

"You take that framework of people feeling locked out, shut out, marginalized and disrespected," he said. "You go from Iraq, to Palestine to Israel, from Enron to Wall Street, from Katrina to the bumbling of the Bush administration, to the complicity of the Democrats in not stopping him on the war, stopping him on the tax cuts."

"In that context, I have decided to run for president," Nader told NBC's "Meet the Press."

Nader also criticized Republican candidate John McCain and Democrats Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton for failing to support full Medicare for all or cracking down on Pentagon waste and a "bloated military budget. He blamed that on corporate lobbyists and special interests, which he said dominate Washington, D.C., and pledged in his third-party campaign to accept donations only from individuals.

"The issue is do they have the moral courage, do they have the fortitude to stand up to corporate powers and get things done for the American people," Nader said. "We have to shift the power from the few to the many."

Nader also ran as a third-party candidate in 2000 and 2004, and many Democrats still accuse him of costing Al Gore the 2000 election.

Obama, responding Saturday to Nader's earlier criticisms that he lacked "substance," praised Nader as a "heroic figure."

"In many ways he is a heroic figure and I don't mean to diminish him. But I do think there is a sense now that if somebody is not hewing to the Ralph Nader agenda, then you must be lacking in some way," Obama said.

Clinton called Nader's announcement a "passing fancy" and said she hoped his candidacy wouldn't hurt the Democratic nominee.

"Obviously, it's not helpful to whomever our Democratic nominee is. But it's a free country," she told reporters as she flew to Rhode Island for campaign events.

Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, speaking shortly before Nader's announcement, said Nader's past runs have shown that he usually pulls votes from the Democrat. "So naturally, Republicans would welcome his entry into the race," the former Arkansas governor said on CNN.

Nader vociferously disputes the spoiler claim, saying only Democrats are to blame for losing the race to George W. Bush. He said Sunday there could be no chance of him tipping the election to Republicans because the electorate will not vote for a "pro-war John McCain."

"If the Democrats can't landslide the Republicans this year, they ought to just wrap up, close down, emerge in a different form," Nader said.

"...it is just unbelievable to me that Meet the Press gave him a national forum to set up another chance to put a Republican in the oval office."

Russert always helps the right, hurts the left whenever he can...

It's pretty simple:

Vote Nader, vote republican.

let's toss ross perot in the ring while we're at it. if nader were serious about this he should have gotten into the race a while ago, jumping in at this point gives him only one role, that of a spoiler. nader is starved for attention, and this is a stupid and selfish way to go about boosting his ego.

I had been hoping America would select someone with a different perspective on the world other than a man...but it did not. Nader is the second best choice. I just donated $250.00 to his campaign. Go Ralph!

Sad that so many people here thinking that making the same mistake twice will do anything for this country.

Voting for Nader did nothing positive for our nation in 2000, and it will do nothing for our nation in 2008 as well.

There's no better way to unite and mobilize Democrats around their real candidate than to see the headline "Nader Announces Another Presidential Bid." It certainly puts everything in perspective.
Although I have my favorite, Nader's action has inspired me to get behind whichever of the two Democratic candidates gets the nomination with all my resources.

Once upon a time Nader did some good things. Now his time is past. He ought to recognize that and move on, instead of just appearing to be an old fool who needs the attention. I think he may still be more than that, but I'm really beginning to wonder.

So, you're OK with at least 4 more years of the same?

HA! You vote for him if Hillary gets the nod. My God, this works both ways. Nader or not, if o gets the nomination, we're all screwed anyway.

I keep refreshing the site to see if they will correct it and put the 23/6 banner above it. Please tell me that this is a joke, a parody, a cruel satire of an publicity seeking ego out of control.

It's not? Oh well, it certainly should be.

This guy has OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder). He can't stop himself from running whenever there is a national election. He's very old and repetitive and no longer has anything to contribute except to tweak the election results. He needs to retire. Ralph, go do some volunteer work at Senior Citizen centers.

This time he will get nothing and will make no difference. It is getting old. If he wants to make a difference, he should run for Congress. I voted for him last time but I'm not going to be responsible again for splitting the Democrats and helping to put another Republican in the White House.

It is good Meah. I think it is good to have a choice. On the oether hand, people have already rejected better candidates than Nader. Kucinich was one of them.

There is no pint now in taking a step back, just out of bitterness.

If Nader wants to be considered as a serious candidate then he needs to run all 4 YEARS not just for six months. As a matter of fact I did send him an email before and suggested he should start campaigning the day after the elections.
So my question to Ralph Nader is:
WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN FOR THE LAST 4 YEARS? On Vacation?
