WASHINGTON — Ralph Nader on Sunday announced a fresh bid for the White House, criticizing the top contenders as too close to big business and dismissing the possibility that his third-party candidacy could tip the election to Republicans.

The longtime consumer advocate is still loathed by many Democrats who accuse him of costing Al Gore the 2000 election.

Nader said most people are disenchanted with the Democratic and Republican parties due to a prolonged Iraq war and a shaky economy. He also blamed tax and other corporate-friendly policies under the Bush administration that he said have left many lower- and middle-class people in debt.

"You take that framework of people feeling locked out, shut out, marginalized, disrespected," he said. "You go from Iraq, to Palestine/Israel, from Enron to Wall Street, from Katrina to the bungling of the Bush administration, to the complicity of the Democrats in not stopping him on the war, stopping him on the tax cuts."

Nader, who turns 74 later this week, announced his candidacy on NBC's "Meet the Press."

In a later interview with The Associated Press, he rejected the notion of himself as a spoiler candidate, saying the electorate will not vote for a "pro-war John McCain." He also predicted his campaign would do better than in 2004, when he won just 0.3 percent of the vote as an independent.

"This time we're ready for them," said Nader of the Democratic Party lawsuits that kept him off the ballot in some states.

Democratic candidates Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton quickly sought to portray Nader's announcement as having little impact.

"Obviously, it's not helpful to whomever our Democratic nominee is. But it's a free country," said Clinton, who called Nader's announcement a "passing fancy."

Obama dismissed Nader as a perennial presidential campaigner. "He thought that there was no difference between Al Gore and George Bush and eight years later I think people realize that Ralph did not know what he was talking about," Obama added.

Republican Mike Huckabee welcomed Nader into the race.

"I think it always would probably pull votes away from the Democrats, not the Republicans," the former Arkansas governor said on CNN.

Nader said Obama's and Clinton's lukewarm response was not surprising given that both political parties typically treat third-party candidates as "second-class citizens." Nader said he will decide in the coming days whether to run as an independent, Green Party candidate or in some other third party.

Pointing a finger at Republicans, he described McCain as a candidate for "perpetual war" and said he welcomed the support of Republican conservatives "who don't like the war in Iraq, who don't like taxpayer dollars wasted, and who don't like the Patriot Act and who treasure their rights of privacy."

"If the Democrats can't landslide the Republicans this year, they ought to just wrap up," Nader added.

With Obama as the nominee, Nadar has virtually NO substantive reason to be running. This is pure ego. Progressives will see this for what it is. Obama is the most progressive (almost presumptive) nominee in a generation. Nadar will be an asterisk with less than 1% of the vote.

Totally agree. I have voted for Nader in the past simply because there was not a progressive on the ticket. Now, there is no reason for me to vote for him and I suspect this will be the case for the majority of voters. Even Kucinich told his supporters to caucus for Obama in some states. I honestly don't know where he thinks he will get support from.

If anyone here really believes that casting their vote for Ralph is going to lead to change, you might want to take a gander back at 2000. Just sayin'

As someone who used to love Ralph Nader, all I can say is that he has become a spoiler. Any third party run can only hurt one or the other of the Democrats or Republicans. If he thinks the system is broken, he should run as a Democrat. Even if a third party candidate were to somehow miraculously win, he would have no base of support within Congress. A party can only be built from the bottom up, not top down.

I am already extremely angry at him for what he did in 2000 (Still think there's no difference between Bush and Gore, Ralph?). If he somehow helps the Republicans win this year, I will never forgive him.

oh, please vsign troll. Nader has nothing to offer. He still reeks of the stink of 2000--spoiled, rotten, ego-driven politico. He's toast. Nobody cares about Nader--except NADER. He's got LESS to offer than that lying, cheating, thieving McCain that we are all learning is a not-so-nice guy after all.

McCain voted against the anti-torture bill (so much for "experience as a POW"). He's missed all 15 of the Senate's clean energy bill votes. Nader, McCain and all Rethug candidates for office are bad for our country, bad for We the People and bad for the planet.

Ralph Nader is 3 days away from being 74 years old. If mccain is on the edge due to age, Nader must have slipped over it. Neither of them is going to do the nation a bit of good. Nader needs to pack his bag and go home, draw up some plans and proposals to benefit the people, and present those to people who have the drive, the smarts, and the power to get something done. Where has Nader been all these years? I don't remember him on any talk shows discussing the waste of lives and treasure in this stupid war, nor putting forth good workable plans to create jobs and a healthcare plan. Go Home, Ralphie. You can no longer run with the big dogs so stay on the porch.

I don't think people will vote for Nader this time. Thanks to him running in 2000 we got Bush when it would have been a bigger victory for Gore.

Thanks to Perot the country was inflicted with the Clintons. I would say this is far worse than anything Nader can do.

This is a shameful turn of events. He is again indirectly helping the Republican Party. He should back off and fall in line with the Democrats. There's too much at stake for America is be sabotaged by his nonsense.

I am also very pissed at all the candidates. I'm so pissed, so pissed, that I'm going to vote for my dog.

That'll fix things.

And all those who don't vote for my dog are cultists and un-American and un-patriotic, because none of the current candidates, especially Obama have no accomplishments and don't care for me.

My dog does.

Stop blaming Nader for the last two elections.
If Gore or Kerry had stood and fought what Bush
and the corporate media were doing this country
wouldn't be in the mess it's in. John Edwards
tried to get Kerry to find out the truth about
Ohio but Kerry just folded. I know, I live in
Ohio and thanks to Blackwell he got Bush back
in the White House. Blackwell then ran for the
govenorship of Ohio and thank God he lost. To
all that think it's Naders fault, look in the
mirror. Did the public DEMAND a full recount of
Florida or Ohio? Until we all stand together
for what's right these crooks, liars and scum
will get away with what they are doing. How
many of you have put your name on a petition to
have Bush and Cheney impeached. How many of you
have called Pelosi's office and told her to put
impeachment back on the table or give up her
office to someone with a backbone. I hope that
she is replaced in the next election. If you
say to me We don't have enough votes to do that
in the House or Senate I say spend 5 minutes
calling or E-mailing your represenatives and
DEMAND impeachment. Stop blaming Nader. He or
anyone else has the right to run for President
if they so choose. Put the blame where it
belongs on all of us for not DEMANDING a fair
election. Start calling and E-mailing all of
your representatives if you want things to
change.

Uh, there was a recount in Florida. Bush supposedly took it by a few hundred votes. That is why Ralph Nader handed it to Bush. Al Gore went to the Supreme court. But hey, Swing Voter Sandra went Republican that day.

What do you think we've been doing? There were many calls for a recount in 2000 and 2004. There have been e-mails and phone calls to our Congresspeople and it doesn't do a lick of good. We DON'T have enough votes in the House or Senate for impeachment and no amount of phone calls, letters, or e-mails will change that. People asking for impeachment are pretty much considered whackjobs, especially this late in the game.
And yes, everyone does have the right to run for President; however, when you've run umpteen times and end up doing nothing but pissing people off, maybe it's time to hand the third-party reigns over to someone else? I'm all for third-party candidates, I wish we didn't have a two-party system, but Nader just isn't the answer.

Ralph Nader will try to do to Barak Obama what he did to Al Gore. Be afraid, be very afraid. It isn't as if there is nothing in Obama's policy with which Nader can agree. There is much that he can agree with. For example ending tax breaks for the rich and bringing the troops home from Iraq etc.

Why is Nader doing this again? I can't figure him out. Perhaps Nader's platform is not fully accepted by Obama but surely there is some substance in Obama's program with which he, Nader can agree.

Does he actually want another 4 years of a McCain administration which looks very much like the one George W. Bush foisted on the American people. This could be the result of Nader's run for President.

Be afraid! Be very afraid!

How hypocritical can you get? If Nader is so anti megacorps and big biz why is he playing straight into their hands? Could he be being financially encouraged by a Republican to spoil the Democrats and also discourage Bloomberg from standing?

For the rest of the world’s sake we need Nader’s sanctimonious rants like a hole in the head! As we say in Scotland the man’s a NUMPTY!
