WASHINGTON — Ralph Nader on Sunday announced a fresh bid for the White House, criticizing the top contenders as too close to big business and dismissing the possibility that his third-party candidacy could tip the election to Republicans.

The longtime consumer advocate is still loathed by many Democrats who accuse him of costing Al Gore the 2000 election.

Nader said most people are disenchanted with the Democratic and Republican parties due to a prolonged Iraq war and a shaky economy. He also blamed tax and other corporate-friendly policies under the Bush administration that he said have left many lower- and middle-class people in debt.

"You take that framework of people feeling locked out, shut out, marginalized, disrespected," he said. "You go from Iraq, to Palestine/Israel, from Enron to Wall Street, from Katrina to the bungling of the Bush administration, to the complicity of the Democrats in not stopping him on the war, stopping him on the tax cuts."

Nader, who turns 74 later this week, announced his candidacy on NBC's "Meet the Press."

In a later interview with The Associated Press, he rejected the notion of himself as a spoiler candidate, saying the electorate will not vote for a "pro-war John McCain." He also predicted his campaign would do better than in 2004, when he won just 0.3 percent of the vote as an independent.

"This time we're ready for them," said Nader of the Democratic Party lawsuits that kept him off the ballot in some states.

Democratic candidates Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton quickly sought to portray Nader's announcement as having little impact.

"Obviously, it's not helpful to whomever our Democratic nominee is. But it's a free country," said Clinton, who called Nader's announcement a "passing fancy."

Obama dismissed Nader as a perennial presidential campaigner. "He thought that there was no difference between Al Gore and George Bush and eight years later I think people realize that Ralph did not know what he was talking about," Obama added.

Republican Mike Huckabee welcomed Nader into the race.

"I think it always would probably pull votes away from the Democrats, not the Republicans," the former Arkansas governor said on CNN.

Nader said Obama's and Clinton's lukewarm response was not surprising given that both political parties typically treat third-party candidates as "second-class citizens." Nader said he will decide in the coming days whether to run as an independent, Green Party candidate or in some other third party.

Pointing a finger at Republicans, he described McCain as a candidate for "perpetual war" and said he welcomed the support of Republican conservatives "who don't like the war in Iraq, who don't like taxpayer dollars wasted, and who don't like the Patriot Act and who treasure their rights of privacy."

"If the Democrats can't landslide the Republicans this year, they ought to just wrap up," Nader added.

When i look at the democratic nomination process it has gotten so emotional, partisan and out of hand to the point that is immature. All the Obama people say if Hillary wins, i'm not voting for her. hell even I said it. and the hillary people say the opposite. but when i think about it just an example of how immature we all are. I don't think obama is the most radicle canidate, I actually wanted Ron Paul, and if it makes any difference to you i actually did vote nader in 2000. But i do think he is the most radicle ELECTABLE one. And I also know that even though I don't want Hillary, either her or Obama will be infinately better than a 70 year old man who is so out of touch he thinks we can go to war for 100 years.

My point is this, I understand how emotional people are, but the stupidest thing about this campaign to me now is when I hear people say if obama wins, or if hillary wins i'm not voting for the other party. I don't think this country is in a position to vote for people who clearly aren't going to win because the only person you're benefiting is the absolute worst candidate, just because you're being a sore loser. Really it's is about time people in this country grow up and exhibit some rationality and maturity. You sound like a little kid to me. I mean I said it too, i'm no better, but when I really thought about it I thought I was being stupid. I may not like Hilary, but even I know she's better than mccain. The election really is about the lesser of two evils, the difference now is we aren't in any position to gamble. And if you haven't learned that......

Now the negative Clinton comments herein, and I'm one of them, have competition from the Nader-haters!

Brilliant!!!

It never hurts to have more choices. That said, I'm staying with Obama.

Were I that dissatisfied with the present field, I would write in Kucinich.

To me, voting for Nader makes no sense.

Voting for Nader will give you another Republican President. He will split the left wing vote.

And before everyone craps on me, realize this. He cannot win if he cannot campaign with the same financial levels at his disposal.

The election process is built that way. This man has had his time to make statements. He should find other ways to contribute to bringing the issues forward. His way hasn't worked in the past and it won't help again.

If Americans want a third partycandidate, then they need a strong, viable and well financed third party. Not Ralph Nader.

I like Ralph Nadar but what we DO NOT need is bigger government. When this economy goes completely to shit maybe people will pay attention to what Ron Paul has to say.

What an EGOMANIC.

NOBODY wants him to be President, he didn't even get 1% of the votee, the only way he will get enough signatures to qualify for ballots, is to have Republicans sign.

Fer cryin out loud - he's OLDER THAN MCCAIN!

Nobody is doubting that Nader loves labor/the middle class but what has his running for president and therefore affecting the outcome in favor of the conservatives done for the people he so loves? NOTHING! Can he really look himself in the mirror and say I, Ralph Nader did something worthwhile for the middle class of this country? Absolutely not. He has rather made life more difficult for them by injecting himself into Presidential campaigns. So many things have happened to the detriment of this that should never have happened IF HE HAD JUST STAYED OUT. Most Important The invasion of Iraq would never have happened if Gore had been allowed to be president. All those hundreds of thousands of Iraqis including women and children would still be alive. 4,000 young American soldiers would not have perished on the hot sands of Iraq, thousands more would not have been maimed and that blighted country would still be in one piece. What, pray tell did he really achieve? All of the above. What he needs to do before he starts another round of fruitless campaigning is to own up to his supporters that he is not what they think he is. That he is nothing but a murderous, blood thirsty stealth neocon playing Man of La Mancha with Corporate funds. This man must be exposed.

"The invasion of Iraq would never have happened if Gore had been allowed to be president."

Why not?

Didn't Algore support Slick's bombing of Iraq on the eve of the Monica hearings?

Or was he too busy at the time casting the tie-breaking vote to increase SS taxes?

Ralph Nader is an egomaniacal attention hound. He managed to attract a few million disaffected people in the 2000 elections, people who did not rationally consider what it would mean to simply throw their votes away on Nader, who could not, cannot, and never can win more than a few million votes -- probably the same few people over and over -- much less the presidency. Throwing away votes may seen somehow Quixotic, but it is irrational in the extreme, and by large, a free gift to Republicans.

I am backing Barack, but I have to wonder now that Ralph is in the media always likes to throw him into the mix and not leave him out. Will the harp on his message that Hillary was trying to sway Americans with but did not work. That Barack behind all his great speeches what has he done to stop the injusrice since being a US senator, how has he really tried to stop a war he does not think we should have waged, what hs he done to help loft the middle class in form of legislative acomplishments. What penalties has he tried to impose on giant health care corporations taking advantage of ill americans.Mind you I am just playing devils advocate because I do support Barack and have donated to his cause I am just wondering if this will be his rhetoric and will the media play it out for him and give him a bullpulpit like it has in the past two elections

This reminds me of an old joke that I heard some time ago. So, (figuratively speaking) you are on a life raft with McCain, Obama and Nader, and you have a (figurative) gun with two bullets...

Which ones do you shoot?

Shoot Nader twice!
