Maybe you remember -- it seems like only about three weeks ago -- former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney was flying back and forth across the country in a last-minute bid to score well in the Super Tuesday Republican primary voting.

And, sure enough, after a disappointing showing that day, he quit. Soon after, he endorsed Sen. John McCain.

But while Romney was talking to reporters before that Tuesday, someone asked how much of his personal fortune he was willing to invest in the campaign. Romney said that he and his wife of 38 years, Ann, had indeed set a limit. But he wouldn't say what it was.

Now we know: $42.3 million.

That works out to about $150,000 of his own money for every convention delegate Romney won. He also spent $55.7 million of other people's money on his campaign. A total of $98 million.

Those are some of the figures mined from the latest campaign finance reports filed with the Federal Election Commission. Other interesting financial tidbits:

A simpler and more direct way to visualize it: EACH VOTE casted for Mitt cost his campaign approximately $10!

Do you think he'll feel better if we convince him not to view such expense as his own loss but as his "personal contribution" to the economic recession?

I hope he has to dig so deep that he hits China. He should be so broke he can't rub two dimes together.

The part that is meaningful is that it shows that simply throwing money at a campaign does not guarantee success. Though it still gives someone with charisma a chance they might not otherwise have.

Romney lacked charisma.

.

I wonder how many people he laid off to save up that money?

Hillary must be laughing. She's behind in delegates, states, popular vote, and the polls. But at least it was her donors' money that she wasted.

The man is worth over 1/4 of a billion - what is $42M in the grand scheme of things? It's like he spent 1/5 of his wealth for the chance and run of a lifetime. The man made it, he may as well spend it as he chooses.

Good point. Kinda wierd how in a certain political party that the rich are mocked for making it, having it, and spending it. Even stranger that the most qualified candidate from either party is toast, leaving Mama Red the socialist, Barry O'Bama the mirage, and McCain the U-turn left as presidential fodder.

The man made it, not.

Much of his money was inherited. I bet with inflation, he doesn't have much more than he started. And now it would appear, he may have less.
