Virgin Flies Biofueled Jet

Virgin Biofuel Flight

LONDON — Virgin Atlantic carried out the world's first flight of a commercial aircraft powered with biofuel on Sunday in an effort to show it can produce less carbon dioxide than normal jet fuels.

Some analysts praised the jumbo jet test flight from London to Amsterdam as a potentially useful experiment. But others criticized it as a publicity stunt and noted scientists are questioning the environmental benefits of biofuels.

"This breakthrough will help Virgin Atlantic to fly its planes using clean fuel sooner than expected," Sir Richard Branson, the airline's president, said before the Boeing 747 flew from London's Heathrow Airport to Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport.

He said the flight would provide "crucial knowledge that we can use to dramatically reduce our carbon footprint," he said.

Sunday's flight was partially fueled with a biofuel mixture of coconut and babassu oil in one of its four main fuel tanks. The jet carried pilots and several technicians, but no passengers.

Virgin Atlantic spokesman Paul Charles predicted this biofuel would produce much less CO2 than regular jet fuel, but said it will take weeks to analyze the data from Sunday's flight.

"It's great that somebody like Richard is willing to put some of his billions into an experiment aimed at reducing the climate change impact of aviation," said James Halstead, an airline analyst at the London stockbroker Dawnay Day Lochart.

"But there are a lot of unanswered questions about the usefulness of biofuels in the battle against global warming," he said.

The flight is the latest example of how the world's airlines are jumping on the environmental bandwagon by trying to find ways of reducing aviation's carbon footprint.

These efforts have included finding alternative jet fuels, developing engines that burn existing fuels more slowly, and changing the way planes land.

The experiment by Virgin Atlantic and its partners _ Boeing, General Electric and Imperium Renewables _ also comes at a time when high oil prices and the U.S. economic slowdown are promoting consolidation in the airline industry.

Aircraft engines cause noise pollution and emit gases and particulates that reduce air quality and contribute to global warming and global dimming, where dust and ash from natural and industrial sources block the sun to create a cooling effect.

About a year ago, the European Commission, the executive of the European Union, said greenhouse gas emissions from aviation account for about 3 percent of the total in the EU and have increased by 87 percent since 1990 as air travel cheapened.

Charles said Virgin's Boeing 747-400 jet and its engines did not have to be redesigned to use biofuel on the test flight.

He said CO2 emissions on a normal flight are generally three times the fuel burned, and that technical engineers on the test flight would take readings and analyze data to estimate its greenhouse gas emissions.

on the national news network it was reported the source of the fuel came from the rain forest in South America, do we really need to go there?

Virgin Airlines CEO Richard Branson announced the beginning of "green" air travel with great fanfare over the weekend by flying a big Airbus jet plane on a combination of coconut and palm oil derived fuel. Now the public is supposed to rest assured that the airline industry has been "saved" by "new technology." It's possible that Branson actually believes this bullshit -- since, contrary to conventional belief, you don't have to be especially intelligent to succeed in business. But the public is sure to be disappointed as reality asserts itself and they discover that the stunt doesn't scale world-wide. That is, sure, you can demonstrate that "a" jet plane can fly on bio-fuel. But can you run the entire global airline fleet on coconut and palm oil, or even a fraction of it? Of course not -- unless you cut down the entire Amazon rain forest and replant it with oil tree crops. Not to mention that the CO2 emissions spraying out of bio-fuel jets at 38,000 feet is not materially different from regular jet fuel exhaust. This is just another tragic attempt to persuade ourselves that we don't have to change our behavior.

Well, lets just not do anything, since nothing we do will solve the entire problem.

Sure it will, research, because humans ARE the problem, and once our exceedingly stupid species finally eradicates ITSELF, the Earth will right itself.
07:26 PM on 02/24/2008
They next step will be planes powered by spontaneous human combustion.

With the rising food costs and 40 million and rapidly climbing Americans without health insurance, there will be plenty of fuel sources in the future

Branson's a dreamer, an innovater. That's awesome. Been siphoning a lot of money, though, price fixing etc...

Who will be the 1st air line to use bio fuel made from cooking oil that KFC & other fried chicken franchises have used? That will be a story.

On the one hand I commend Branson for his forward looking approach to reducing green house gases but on the other hand biofuels could create a situation where more and more of the land used to cultivate our food, land that is now our last reserves of unspoiled forests and wildlife habitat and land in third world countries will be used to raised crops suitable for biofuels rather than food. Once again we will be taking from those least able to survive in order to maintain our overindulgent lifestyle. Why not invest in more sustainable and equitable forms of energy that will not create more hardship for the rest of us.

Diesel was originally designed to be a bio fuel till the oil industry got a hold of it. JP4 is nothing but refined diesel...

The 2 trillion dollars wasted in the Iraq invasion and occupation war crime could have replace ALL electricity generation in the USA,

with solar and wind.

Energy Crisis Solved.

2 trillion dollars. current cost for solar 8$ per average watt, 2.5*10^11 watt.

current electric USA use: 2.3*10^11 watts.

Wind is much cheaper.

New Solar tech have begun shipping much less expensive solar.

Last year, commercial aviation throughout the world used 80 billion gallons of jet fuel. Due to the power/weight ratios of air travel, it'll probably be one of the last areas to be weaned off of fossil fuels. But on the ground, things are different. My opinion is that we need to change our machines, and our mindset, to reflect the availability of fuel, and the sustainability of our environment. A good start would be to use LNG or CNG for urban transport in commercial trucks and buses. Various incentives and mandates, and plain economics could get this to be more widespread and happen quicker. I think it's easier to produce methane than either ethanol or biofuel. America is currently self-sufficient with natural gas, and Canada is a major backup. There are still abundant amounts around the world, and it is the logical choice to replace dwindling, convenient, liquid fuels.

After all this time making the gasoline engine so clean, we'll just have to start again to make an efficient hybrid electric car that uses natural gas (and plug-in electricity) as a propellant. The problem will be efficiency, not cleanliness. Another advantage of having millions of clean burning, electricity generating vehicles in a big city would be apparent if a connecting bridge was designed into the vehicle to power buildings and homes in case of an electrical grid overload or blackout.

Agreed. Though the new non-toxic lithium batteries are giving pure electric cars over 200 mile ranges(Teslamotors). Natural gas is a very good hybrid fuels.

If we don't burn up the Methane Hydrates, The methane may release in a burst and trigger global warming since Methane is 20 times the greenhouse gas that CO2 is. The is 2-10X methane in the "Burning Ice" then all other know gas reserves.

The gas crisis is truly hurting the economy. I believe in a few years, Virgin Airlines will be the first airline to fly using alternative fuels

Bio-Foolish Behavior

Environment: In 2005, America used 15% of its corn crop to replace just 2% of its gasoline. Two new studies say use of biofuels will leave the world a warmer and hungrier place.

There's no viable delivery infrastructure - you choke on your supply when this is the case. May want to consder how established interests go about diescrediting possible competition.

Recent events on the Sun seem to be predicting global cooling, based on it’s documented 400 year cycle. Man’s puny little energy production is 6,000 times less than the Sun’s. Every day! Many scientists, most politicians, most teachers, and no newspaper reporters can do simple math.

The ten hottest years on record have not occured since 1995. Hundreds of weather stations in the former Soviet Union closed down after 1991 and stopped reporting. These were some of the coldest places recording temperature, hence the mean global temperature (if there really can be such a thing) appears to have increased.

So corn oil will be $8.79/gallon now?
12:50 PM on 02/24/2008
While some people decry this as a PR stunt, it's also a ground-breaking experiment in alternative fuels. And a widely publicized message that corporations don't have to go 'biz as usual.'

Branson has also lobbied for regulations that would allow jets to shut down their engines while idling in take-off lines, thus decreasing the pollution that occurs when ram-air turbojets aren't running at full air speed.

Gotta love a billionaire with a brain and an innovative approach.
If most other CEOS thought similarly, the world would be a better place.
