Edwardses Join Anti-War Campaign Group

John and Elizabeth Edwards have thrown their support behind a new $20 million election-year campaign to press for a withdrawal from Iraq and tie the war to the faltering economy.

The Edwardses joined a conference call on Monday to discuss their efforts with the group, which includes MoveOn.org, the Service Employees International Union, VoteVets.org, and the Center for American Progress. John Edwards drew extensively from his time on the campaign trail, and spoke kindly of his former opponents who remain in the race. He claimed repeatedly that the American people will have a "very clear choice in the fall" between John McCain and the "Democratic president who will end this war."

Elizabeth Edwards, in traditional fashion, saved many of her choice words for media. Lamenting that reporters "certainly don't cover the connection between the issues," she said the American people see there is "undoubtedly a connection between oil, the costs of transportation in this country, and this war."

The effort, tentatively called Iraq Campaign 2008, intends to focus heavily on the domestic costs of a protracted Iraq war. "We have a limited amount of money and we're spending much too much of our available resources on this war," Elizabeth Edwards said. Grassroots organizing and national advertising will target members of Congress who back the war. Sens. Susan Collins (R-ME), John Sununu (R-NH), Norm Coleman (R-MN) and Mitch McConnell (R-KY) topped the list of likely targets in the Senate. Rep. John Porter (R-NV) was the only name give in the House, though as Brad Woodhouse from Americans United for Change noted, "Most of the chickens have run out of the barn."

Two individuals also on the conference call -- John Podesta, president of the Center for American Progress, and Anna Burger, secretary-treasurer of SEIU -- are heading a Democratic-leaning 527 group expected to be very active in the 2008 presidential race.

--

Update: The campaign kicked off today with the release of a new VoteVets.org TV ad critical of Senator John McCain. The ad features Iraq veteran Rose Forrest discussing Senator McCain's proposed 100 year commitment to Iraq and the cost here at home.

Why haven't the Edwardses ouright endorsed Obama. It is clear they are more aligned with Obama's vision for America than Clinton's What are they afraid of. Their silence speaks louder than words.

I applaud John and Elizabeth Edwards. But they've got just a few more days to throw their support behind a candidate before they become completely irrelevant. I would think the choice is clear. I'm puzzled by their silence.

I couldn't agree with you more. They have chickened out and for that, if Obama wins the nomination, they shouldn't be given a piece of the pie. The ones that should be in Obama's cabinet and other gravy positions are those who endorsed him when he most needed them and gave him the push needed to win the primaries.

Despite John Edwards pulling out of this election, I think it's very clear he will be a future President. His political allegiance is strong, and Move-on.org is just the group to lead his cause to victory, no matter who is awarded the lucky position as President of the United States. Some people are divided. Should we elect a first Black man to the office, or should we elect a first female President? Personally the doors of opportunity are needed as a conditioning modernization installed for both. So my opinion is - it is fifty fifty. The main concern above and beyond all of this stretching of boundaries is
still our interest in foreign affairs, and how we are going to conduct ourselves as Americans conflicted and negotiated with a war. Unity!

Andria ~ I like your post, and your very good comments regarding John Edwards & the current race between Hillary & Barack for Democratic nominee. Truthfully, I see merit in both candidates ... and I'd support either one over McCain or even, Nader (no buts about it). But I believe Obama will eventually take the D-nomination, as he seems to be unstoppable at this point. I like the Edwardses & their very strong anti-war stance (good for them!!) and hope that John plays a vital role in a future White House.

That ad is incredible. This is the kind of basic, common sense argument that will send the GOP down in flames this fall.

Best way to promote a swift and peaceful end to our warmongering is to give every American a stake in participation. Create a Supplimental War On Terror Tax to pay-as-we-go. Index it a bit more steeply than Federal Income tax margins, hit corporate windfalls even harder, and give hefty deductions to soldiers and guardsmen. Every American will be energized to find sensible solutions and implement them in a hurry, especially the rich folk who have the most influence with policy makers.

John Edwards is a lousy good for nothing dirtbag for not endorsing Obama! What the hell is he waiting for? Hillary is staggering around like a punch drunk boxer. If Edwards would hurry up and endorse Obama, it would generate a huge media buzz and drive the final stake thru the heart of Hillary's campaign. Come on John let's go!! No more fkin delays, for the good of the Democartic Party and the good of the country would you please endorse Obama already!!!

I am appaulled at what I see Obama supporters write. Whether you like John Edwards policies or not-he was the first and only candidate with detailed, clearly articulated and practical plans for health care, reducing the deficit, creating well-paying jobs and reducing our reliance on oil. He courageously admited that he was wrong with many of his votes, and after spending the last few years touring the country and listening to "the people," he created a powerful populast campaign to turn this nation around. He was immediately blackballed and then ignored by the media. In a country where you are no one if you are not on TV or the cover of a several magazines, he was lost. I've never read Hillary people bashing Edwards, only Obama supporters, who seem extremely angry at the idea that anyone might not be moved by their charismatic candidate. Why? Have they ever read their candidates plans? Do they realize that many of Obamas plans are actually to the right of Hillery's and certainly to the right of Edwards. That is why Obama is so appealing to Independants and Republicans. I am not interesteded in being inspired-I can get that in church or from a great book. Show me the beef. What do you plan to do for me and my child? How do you plan to make sure my child and I are covered for medical expences. I have MS and my child is autistic. We have been denied-our rates have gone sky high. Our local school district does not provide the services mandated by the federal government because they have no money -they don't even have money for basic text books. We've suffered under a Republican Governor who cuts taxes and outreach programs for the poor and disabled. We have Republican lawmakers holding up progressive measures that help the general public because that doesn't help their corporate buddies. The Conservative Republican agenda is ANTITHETICAL to the Proggressive agenda. You can't sit down with multi-billion dollar health insureres and ask them kindly to think about lowering their rates so people can buy them!!?? They are there to make a profit. A president-A leader proposes to Congress a list of legislation that gives the people what they need-And then goes out and convinces the people that this is the best way to go and their support for the president's plans influences their congresspersons vote in the legislature. A president should never sit down with corportations. They are not the people. I am shocked by people's ignorance. We are a nation of the people by the people and for the people - not corportations. We are the only industrialized nation without some form of national health care. We are the only industrialized nation that does not provide comprehensive support to students who wish to go to college. We are the only industrialized nation that does not mandate paid sick leave for parents with sick children or parents. We are the only industrialized nation that gives substantial subsidies to oil companies, drug companies and multinational farming companies - but refuses to extend unemploment, raise the minimum wage to account for inflation or enforce laws that protect consumers, the environment and the publics right to know. A corporation can be obsolved of all debt when it declares bankruptcy. An individual is not!!! The reason is that the Republican Congress and weak Democrats vote for what the Corportaions want. In fact much of the legislation that has been passed these last 7 years were written by corporations. There is NO BIG TENT FOR "THE PEOPLE" AND CORPORATIONS. THERE ARE ONLY THE PEOPLE. Obama will not champion their cause. He will only inspire -some of the people. He is better than McCrazy, but does not come close to filling the boots of Edwards or Nader or Kucinich. Again, I don't need to be inspired-I was inspired by Clinton and got NAFTA. The country was apparently inspired by Bush-because they felt they could have a beer with him and he was a compassionate conservative who wanted to help the people. Like I said-I don't need inspiration. I and the rest of the country need ACTION ASAP. So I guess I'll have to wait another 4 or eight years. And in the meantime put up with Obamamaniacs high on inspirational words and Oprah dreams instead of doing the real work on the ground locally and statewide to pass progressive legislation that can actually help "the people."

What a good idea. Only why let the media do it? I think Edwards should drive the stake through Hillary's heart himself. That would prove he loves Obama in the most dramatic way possible. Such loyalty might even be enough to cleanse him of his "good for nothing dirtbag" status.

verlaine, you are disgusting, just like the very divisive republicans. The way you write about John Edwards sound more like you are a lousy good for nothing dirtbag. Aren't we tired of calling each other names? I thought that decency, good manners and respect for each other were the things that differentiated us from the republicans; republicans are the ones that use that kind of language and act as you describe. John Edwards has been the best candidate we have ever
had, decent, clean, fighting for the poor and creating the best health insurance program that was
in part copied by Obama and Clinton, providing health insurance for all Americans including YOU.
Lets stop that aggressive form of speaking, remember we are for unity; this country is for all, not only for the ones with the biggest mouths. I loke Obama very much, and will vote for him,
but for me, John Edwards is still the best.

When Edwards dropped out before Super Tuesday he helped Obama in a big way.
The USSR destroyed itself by spending too much of its GNP an war and defense and not enough on infrastructure and the people.
The USA is now doing the same and it will end us as a power in the world if we don't stop now.

""Who's goin' tell you when...it's too late. Who's goin' tell you things... aren't so great."

Their is a possibility, that the same forces that bankrupted the USSR are now at work in the USA. I believe that they hired for president, the best bankrupter that fit a number of criteria in 2000. The question is how America will look after it goes bankrupt. Will China encourage Mexico to take back the Southwest? Or will Texas prevail as a new "Georgia style" nation. (Texas does hold 32 tons of plutonium in it's borders) SARS could take care of the old and obese, a majority past the Mississippi east. The idea is to take without burning the wealth built over the last century. Through legitimate world banking persuasion, China could turn it's previous paper holdings into new source of domiciles for it's billion people. I've already seen buses packed with Asians touring new, but unoccupied housing tracks. (Normal in Vegas or Orlando, but in suburbia?)

Senator McCain's Real Record on the War in Iraq

Senator John McCain presents himself as a maverick and a critic of the Iraq war. But a close read of his record indicates that his position on the Iraq war has consistently matched President George W. Bush"s...........

The Calm Before the Conflagration

The United States is funding and in many cases arming the three ethnic factions in Iraq"the Kurds, the Shiites and the Sunni Arabs.

These factions rule over partitioned patches of Iraqi territory and brutally purge rival ethnic groups from their midst.

Iraq no longer exists as a unified state. It is a series of heavily armed fiefdoms run by thugs, gangs, militias, radical Islamists and warlords who are often paid wages of $300 a month by the U.S. military................

No, I watched it, and she talks about a THOUSAND year commitment to the people of Iraq. What a crock of shit. No one has "proposed" a commitment of 100 or 1000 years. I thank her for her service, but the people who wrote this commercial are guilty of ridiculous exaggeration. This is very dishonest, and I think most voters will see right through it.

Last week, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said it "would be fine with" him if the U.S. military stayed in Iraq for "a hundred years" or even a "million years.".
But on CBS"s Face the Nation, McCain claimed that Americans would not be "concerned" if the U.S. spends "10,000 years" in Iraq:

I am totally opposed to the Iraq war but I have to agree the video is a bit over the top. Karl Rove would be proud of the exaggeration and dishonesty.

There's definitely a good message in there. We could use the money for healthcare and crumbling infrastructure for our country instead of any kind of presence in Iraq.

We're now spending billions for medical treatment of wounded iraqis and rebuilding the bridges and buildings destroyed in this illegal war that we started.

Reshoot the video to make it not look like a Karl Rove-neocon hit job. Speaking of the sickening little weasel makes me want to...BASH!

I think the Edwardses are the American Dream Team. I wish while they launch this campaign to end the war and stop the flow of our monies going to Iraq, John uses his talent to go after Iraqi Government for reimbursement for this war. Then we can put that money to some good use lifting this country up out of poverty, strengthing the military, fixing immirgration, etc. Also, impeachment of this current administration would be in order too.

Although I do agree with everything you said, I would disagree with your comment regarding reimbursement of the Iraqi government.

Why would we want to reimbursement them when Bush Illegally Invaded their country, got 4,000 of our troops & 650,000 Iraqis killed?

Iraqis did not attack US, Saudis did, so may be we should reimbursement their Government instead!
