John McCain Says He Could Lose Over Iraq War

Mccainhat

LIZ SIDOTI   02/25/08 10:44 PM ET   AP

ROCKY RIVER, Ohio — John McCain said Monday that to win the White House he must convince a war-weary country that U.S. policy in Iraq is succeeding. If he can't, "then I lose. I lose," the Republican said.

He quickly backed off that remark.

"Let me not put it that stark," the likely GOP nominee told reporters on his campaign bus. "Let me just put it this way: Americans will judge my candidacy first and foremost on how they believe I can lead the country both from our economy and for national security. Obviously, Iraq will play a role in their judgment of my ability to handle national security."

"If I may, I'd like to retract 'I'll lose.' But I don't think there's any doubt that how they judge Iraq will have a direct relation to their judgment of me, my support of the surge," McCain added. "Clearly, I am tied to it to a large degree."

The five-year-old Iraq conflict already is emerging as a fault line in the general election, with the Arizona senator calling for the U.S. military to continue its mission while his Democratic opponents urge speedy withdrawal.

While most Republicans still back the war, many independents and Democrats don't. That presents a significant challenge for McCain and an opportunity for either Barack Obama or Hillary Rodham Clinton.

McCain acknowledged the war will be "a significant factor in how the American people judge my candidacy."

The lead Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, McCain has consistently backed the war although he's long criticized the way it was waged after the Saddam Hussein's fall. He was an original proponent of President Bush's troop-increase strategy, having called for more forces on the ground for several years. Last spring, McCain went all in on the war by embracing it as Bush took heat for boosting troop levels to quell violence.

"We can fail in Iraq," McCain said Monday in an Associated Press interview. But, he added: "I see a clear path to success in Iraq." He defined that as fewer casualties and Iraqi troops taking over security to allow U.S. forces to return home. "All of us want out of Iraq, the question is how do we want out of Iraq," he added.

McCain has signaled that he plans to make Iraq and national security a major part of his general election campaign. Daily, he accuses both Obama and Clinton as wanting to "wave the white flag of surrender." Democrats, for their part, are arguing that McCain's candidacy is simply a continuation of Bush's "failed" policies. They have seized on a previous McCain remark in which he suggested that U.S. troop presence _ at some level _ could extend 100 years or more.

At a town hall-style meeting in suburban Cleveland, McCain accused Democrats of distorting that comment and sought to explain. "The war will be over soon, the war for all intents and purposes, although the insurgency will go on for years and years and years. But it will be handled by the Iraqis, not by us," he said. Like after other wars, he said, the United States then will decide "what kind of security arrangement we want to have with the Iraqis."

While McCain attracts voters across the political spectrum, he is sure to face resistance this fall for his Iraq position in Ohio and other swing states that have seen high numbers of residents die in Iraq.

Over the next eight months, McCain said he would take the same approach when discussing Iraq that he's taken all year as he won primary after primary on his way to securing the GOP nomination.

Speaking to reporters on his bus, he said he would "tell them that I understand their frustration and their sorrow over the sacrifice that has been made and then I try to explain to them what's at stake and what's going on there now. And that's the best I can do."

McCain said his candidacy will be successful "if I can convince the American people, the people of Ohio, that this is succeeding, that the casualties will continue down, although there are occasional spikes."

"So I have to, and I believe can, make an argument that the surge is succeeding, that we will end this war and have the Iraqis take over those responsibilities as we more and more assume support roles and then withdraw," he added.

McCain recalled reading a USA Today poll that he said showed most people believe the troop-increase strategy is succeeding, and said: "Now, still the majority of Americans want out of Iraq. And, I understand that, too. So do I."

The survey actually found that 43 percent _ not a majority _ said the troop increase is "making the situation there better," up from 22 percent in July.

Asked why he asked to retract the "I lose" remark, McCain said much else could impact his chances.

"We've got many months to go before the general election," he said. "But is Iraq an important part of the judgment that people will make of me, of course."

Really, John? The war is such a popular undertaking! During our endeavor/occupation, we've only displaced 2 million refugees, killed 100 thousand civilians, turned millions of other lives upside down, killed 4,000 of our own, and probably have 40,000 injured and maimed, and are about a trillion dollars poorer. The US is a debtor nation, and sliding further in debt each day, thanks to this myopic administration- spendong is good, paying for it (to tax) is bad. Get real!

Farrakhan compared Obama to the religion's founder, "Fard Muhammad, who also had a white mother and black father". "A black man with a white mother became a savior to us" [Muslims].

In December, 2007 Wright praised Louis Farrakhan as a man who epitomizes greatness. Farrakhan has blamed blacks’ troubles on Jews, America, and whites, whom he calls “blue-eyed devils.”

Ann (Dunham) Obama, (white Mother) born in Kansas and Barack Hussein Obama, Sr., (black Father) born in Kenya, descendant of Muslim parents.

"Obama's mother Ann (Dunham) Obama and Muslim stepfather moved to Jakarta, Indonesia's capital, in 1967, and Obama lived there from ages 6 to 10". In his autobiography, "Dreams From My Father," Obama mentions studying the Koran and describes the Muslim school.

The Times sent a reporter to Jakarta to investigate Obama's childhood years there, and published an article on March 16, 2007 that included these details: A close boyhood friend of Obama, Zulfin Adi, said Barack "was a Muslim. He went to the mosque."

Obama's first-grade teacher at a Catholic school, Israella Dharmawan, said: "Barry (Barack's nickname) was Muslim. He was registered as a Muslim because his father was Muslim." In the third grade, Obama transferred to a public school, where he was also registered as a Muslim. At the school, Muslim students attended weekly religion lessons about Islam.

"All this matters, for if Obama once was a Muslim, he is now what Islamic law calls a murtadd (apostate), an ex-Muslim converted to another religion who must be executed".

If Senator Obama is elected President of the United States, this status, clearly, would have large potential implications to his relationship with the Muslim world.

Senator Obama sponsored the "Global Poverty Act" (S.2433) which calls for spending $845 billion, 0.7% of our GNP, over what the U.S. already sends to the UN annually to feed, clothe, shelter, educate, medicate and ARM mainly Third World countries who want to bring deadly harm to Armeicans.

You get a littile racism in the above post, reminding us that Obama had a white mother and black father, as if this background is condemnable.

You get a little guilt by association, condemning Obama for being reponsibility for the support of Louis Farrakhan, whose support Obama has denounced.

By the way, Obama has very good relations with the Jewish community in the United States and is a strong backer of Israel.

You get a little religious bigotry saying Obama was a Muslim in the first grade, as if anyone is really a member of any religion in the first grade until one can make a conscious decision for themselves.

By the third grade, I believe, Obama was a Christian and remains a firm believer in the Christian faith.

The $845 billion to be supposedly spent in the "Global Recovery Act," was a figure arrived at by a guy named Cliff Kincaid of Accuracy in the Media, a conservative media watchdog group.

This is the same group who denounced Walter Cronkite as a Soviet dupe, has been critical of the United Nations, and has criticized Fox News for broadcasting a program called "The Heat Is On," which endorsed the view that global warming represents a serious threat.

In a column, Cliff Kincaid called for a "Quit Gay Sex" campaign, contending that gay men simply could not stop having homosexual sex. Kincaid sounds preoccupied wuth this subject.

Therefore, one can arrive at one's own conclusion about the accuracy of his figure of $845 billion, as well as the sanity of anyone who would use Kincaid's "research" in a quote.

TO: Senator John McCain February 26, 2008

In November 2006 the American people voted for a Change. They were not specific as to what that meant. Many Republicans were voted out and thus we can conclude it was because the American people were unhappy with the Iraq War. Don't you think that it is still the same now? I do.

The Surge of increasing our troops in Iraq has not worked. Until we solve and conquer the war tactics of "Popshots striking we don't know where or when and the enemy hiding in crowds, we will not have won any War. These war tactics will still occur. We should have known these tactics were't conquered to protect America and were not conquered in Israel to protect Israel before going to Iraq. I am not an expert though, but I can surely hear what T.V. News tells me.

Can you find the enemy now hiding somewheres? I think not. You have not even caught our archenemy Osama Bin Laden. These terrorists are global, not just confined in Iraq. Thus, we need resources to be able to conquer the enemy in other places, not just Iraq. Our Treasury is probably near empty now and how can we conquer Global Terrorism with no money. You caught Saddam Hussein and should have left Iraq then. Why are you still there? Aren't you suppose to alleviate suffering for Americans and uphold Human Rights in America.

Finally you have abandoned the suffering of the American people. For example Social Security a Law put in by Congress in 1935 has been given the biggest reduction ever of cost of living increase as announced by President George W. Bush on Oct 07. Social Security is not charity, but like an annuity paid on an Insurance policy. This pertains to millions of hard working people who paid their money upon agreement of getting a return and devoted to The American Way. This should not be their reward. On Oct 05 President George W. Bush also announced he was not going to give a cost of living increase to homeless (Includes job seeker). Nothing heard of since.

"I hate Wars. Put an end to the destruction of War." I looked through the Bible 3 times to find where these verses are from, but because Bible is big I have not found them yet. Perhaps a priest or minister will know. Of course there are Just Wars, but many Americans believe Iraq is not a Just War. The purpose of Congress and Military is to uphold Rights for Americans.

Wisdom Ch6,"The Safety of the World Lies In Many Counselors." Proverbs 24 supports this.

Proverbs 29:14,"A King Keeps His Throne Forever If He Cares for the Rights of the Poor."

TO: Senator John McCain Continued Feb 26, 2008

We need a new winning Team to win Wars. You have had 5 years to try to win a War and have not been successful. The violence continues and on Feb 24, 2008 40 people were killed at a Shiite Temple in Iraq. It is of Grave concern when our military cannot win a War soonest. We need to keep on working with allys and obtain a Coalition of Nations to help America.

Moreover, Social Security put in by Congress in 1935 and made a Law cannot be removed except by 3/4ths of the State Legislatures. Social Security was put in so people would not become needy. This means giving people adequate, decent level of money to live on. It means not putting Iraq or another nation first. American Nationalism is so important in keeping America strong. So is feeling Secure. If we feel secure we can then work together better to preserve America.

To use America just as a money source and nothing else is so unpatriotic and so disloyal to the people of America and the American Way of Life. It violates Democracy. It's not Acirema, but America!

Viva Ameria! Viva America! Viva America!

John MacCain Must be labeled for what he is the bogeyman, and it has to stick to this warmonger who is willing to sacrifice his own children as well as others for power and an a historic legacy to out do, since he was not been able to intellectually achieve the Admiral ships of his Grand father or father.

As you age the functions of your body slows down. Take the McCain brain for instance. He is just now coming to grips with that debacle known as the Iraq war. I give him credit, he is just beginning to see this whole escapade has been a disaster from before the start. What we need is a president who can think on his feet, presently I would like a president who can think.

I keep hearing, "The surge is working"..."The surge is a success" from the Republican side of the ledger. This is a lie and an attempt to redefine behind the authorization for the "surge" in the first place.

It is important to remember and to constantly remind the American people that the surge was authorized for the explicit and sole purpose of giving the Iraqi government the time and space needed to come to some sort of political accommodation with the competing sects within their society. There has been no real progress on that front to speak of. Therefore, the surge cannot be considered a success at this point. Let us also remind the American people that those who proposed the surge also said that we wouldn't need more than six months or so to determine its success. BULLSHIT.

Once again, the Bush administration keeps moving the goal posts to suit their purposes.

The muslim extremists and their Islam religion teaches them to murder innocent people around the world which is just another scare ploy of Islam attempting to infiltrate Sharia law into all civilised governments.

The problem is the Quar`an from which the murders are derived. The Quar`an teaches all muslims to kill all infidels to reach their goal of caliphate of world dominion ruled by their Imam and governed by Sharia law.

England has muslims in their Parliament and is about to become a muslim country with Sharia laws...if they don't make changes rapidly. The birth rate of muslims v UK babies is 3 muslim to 1 UK annually.

England's Archbishop of Canterbury says, "he has been fully accepted into the Muslim faith. He claims to see no inconsistency with his new religion and his continuing role as the leader of the Anglican faith. "Both religions are saying basically the same thing…" said, "Rahman Muhammed bin-Williams as he now wishes to be known". Has this man read the Quar`an? YES!

Europe is struggling to end Socialism, because it has been a miserable failure. France is in the process of changing from Socialism to Capitalism. This process of change there resulted in arson, riots, destruction of public and private property by mostly muslim hoodlums and others who do not want to work and earn a living in a civilised, capitalist country.

The U.S. Government is stacked with professional, political parasites who maintain the status quo of more entitlement programs, useless bureaucrats, duplicative agencies inundated with nepotism, Socialists and Muslims who undermine any administration with leaks if they do not promote their ideology of Marxism or Islam. We have a choice of Capitalism, Marxism or Islam. Please make your vote count in November.

This guy above, FromTheTop, is a real religious bigot. He has not just overdosed on Fox News, but could qualify as one of the diabolical brains behind such propagandistic programming. You will notice, in one of his links above he references an article by Michelle Malkin, who is known for the accuracy of her "journalism."

I doubt that this fool would be so concerned about the practices of Muslim countries, if they did not sit on huge pools of oil. Muslims do not want to kill us, but to live with us. Many more Muslims have been killed by the extremists among them then we have as Americans. This extremism perverts what is a ordinarily a great, peaceful religion, as President Bush has said.

Cheering for a conflagration of civilizations is no way to address this problem in a civilized way. The worst reaction we can have to acts of terrorism is an overreaction that starts unnecessary wars, like Iraq, and that diminishes our civil liberties. Then we have achieved what religious extremists could not do to us.

The archbishop of Canterbury is not a Muslim and he has only suggested that some parts of sharia law might be introduced in England that concern marital disputes or financial matters among Muslims. Gordan Brown, the U.K. Prime Minister, said British law should apply in the country, based on British values.

There is no propaganda that this guy, FromTheTop, will not post. I suggest one will read his posts with the hilarity that they merit.

Senator McCain's Real Record on the War in Iraq
