Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., right, is dressed as a Somali Elder by Sheikh Mahmed Hassan, left, during his visit to Wajir, a rural area in northeastern Kenya, near the borders with Somalia and Ethiopia in this file photo from Aug. 27, 2006. The garb was presented to Obama by elders in Wajir. Obama's estranged late father was Kenyan and Obama visited the country in 2006, attracting thousands of well-wishers. (AP Photo)

WASHINGTON — A photograph circulating on the Internet of Democratic Sen. Barack Obama dressed in traditional local garments during a visit to Kenya in 2006 is causing a dustup in the presidential campaign over what constitutes a smear.

The Associated Press photograph portrays Obama wearing a white turban and a wraparound white robe presented to him by elders in Wajir, in northeastern Kenya. Obama's estranged late father was Kenyan and Obama visited the country in 2006, attracting thousands of well-wishers.

The gossip and news Web site The Drudge Report posted the photograph Monday and said it was being circulated by "Clinton staffers" and quoted an e-mail from an unidentified campaign aide. Drudge did not include proof of the e-mail in the report.

"I just want to make it very clear that we were not aware of it, the campaign didn't sanction it and don't know anything about it," Clinton spokesman Howard Wolfson said in a teleconference with reporters. "None of us have seen the e-mail in question. If anybody has independent reporting that they've done on it I would welcome it."

Obama, in an interview with WOAI radio in San Antonio, Texas, said voters are "saddened when they see these kind of politics."

"Everybody knows that whether it's me or Senator Clinton or Bill Clinton that when you travel to other countries they ask you to try on traditional garb that you have been given as a gift," he said. "The notion that the Clinton campaign would be trying to circulate this as a negative on the same day that Senator Clinton was giving a speech about how we repair our relationships around the world is sad."

Obama campaign manager David Plouffe accused Clinton's campaign of "the most shameful, offensive fear-mongering we've seen from either party in this election."

Clinton campaign manager Maggie Williams said the Obama campaign's reaction was inflaming passions and distracting voters.

"Enough," Williams said in a statement. "If Barack Obama's campaign wants to suggest that a photo of him wearing traditional Somali clothing is divisive, they should be ashamed. Hillary Clinton has worn the traditional clothing of countries she has visited and had those photos published widely.

"This is nothing more than an obvious and transparent attempt to distract from the serious issues confronting our country today and to attempt to create the very divisions they claim to decry."

In a teleconference with reporters, retired Air Force Gen. Scott Gration, an Obama adviser who accompanied the Illinois senator to Kenya two years ago, said the senator was there to learn how tribes were organizing themselves.

"And in the course of this, Senator Obama was given an outfit and as the guest that he was, the great guest, he took this outfit and they encouraged him to try some of it on," Gration said. "It was a thing that we all do."

In December, two Clinton Iowa volunteers resigned after forwarding a hoax e-mail that falsely said Obama is a Muslim possibly intent on destroying the United States. Obama is a member of the United Church of Christ and says he has never been a Muslim, but false rumors about Islamic ties are circulating on the Internet.

This is so stupid. If Drudge could link this to the Clinton campaign, he'd be blathering about it until people were sick.

Drudge says he got it from the Clinton campaign. The photo was provided by the Clinton Campaign.

Apparently Obama enjoys playing dress-up. When he visited Texas, he wore a Stetson, which made him look like Chuck Norris's sidekick on "Walker, Texas Ranger." Doesn't mean he's a cowboy, though.

What's wrong with the photo?

Bush was seen in two fotos with Arabian princes: in one he was holding hands and in the other he was kissed on the lips by the prince. Thus, showing respect to another culture's values has been considered acceptable up to now.

So what's the big deal about the Obama foto?

That's exactly what the Clinton campaign said. "What's wrong with it, it's no big deal?".

The question is, if it is such an inocuous photo of Obama, then why share circulate it at all? If it's no big deal, then what's the point? We've all seen Obama, we don't need another picture.

Answer: It's not a big deal to people who know Obama, but there are PLENTY of people who don't. And, for those who don't and who are worried about him being a muslim, this picture plays into their fears.

I'm not a supporter of either candidate. But I think this is about as dirty as politics gets.

What does Clinton have to gain from this? Nothing. It should be clear, even to the most dedicated Obamaniacs that this did not originate with the Clinton campaign. Both parties are coming across looking foolish. If people think Clinton started this, she's accused of being a bitter loser. If people think this is a ploy by the Obama campaign to make Obama appear as a victim of Clinton, yet once again, he looks backhanded and sneaky. So, in all reality, neither campaign had anything to do with this or wants anything to do with it. It's some meddlesome, bored sychophant trying to see how many tails he can twist at one time.

Drudge SAID he got it from the Clinton campaign (and they are famous/notorious for their daily emailing).

They also denied the SC email came from them but it was later traced to a staffer. She was fired (scapegoated?).

Just like Rove's assistant mailing that tape to the Gore campaign in 2000. Again, a low-level person was caught; the big fish got away.

When Hillary talks about "Rove's playbook", she knows. They seem to have learned a lot from it.

Why is this a problem? All politicians do this. I don't think they try to hide it even though they know they often look goofy. Why is Obama so upset?

Pakistan Criticises Obama After Warning on Military Strikes

Ewen MacAskill in Washington
Saturday August 4, 2007
The Guardian
Pakistan criticised the Democratic election contender Barack Obama yesterday over his warning that as president he might order military strikes against al-Qaida targets in the country's border areas.
As protesters burned the US flag in Karachi, Khusheed Kasuri, Pakistan's foreign minister, said: "It's a very irresponsible statement, that's all I can say. As the election campaign in America is heating up, we would not like American candidates to fight their elections and contest elections at our expense."
The response from Pakistan was mirrored in criticism from Hillary Clinton and other Democratic rivals.
Mr Obama, in a speech on Wednesday, said President George Bush had chosen the wrong battlefield in Iraq and should have concentrated on Afghanistan and Pakistan.
He said he would not hesitate to use force to destroy those who posed a threat to the United States, and if the Pakistani president, Pervez Musharraf, would not act, he would.
That speech may have played well with Democratic activists and the public at large. But before any poll could be held to test reaction, Mr Obama showed uncertainty on Thursday in an interview with the Associated Press.
He appeared to be caught off guard when he was asked if he would use nuclear weapons against al-Qaida in Pakistan.
Mr Obama replied: "I think it would be a profound mistake for us to use nuclear weapons in any circumstance." He added: "... involving civilians".
Demonstrating a degree of unpreparedness, he went on to say: "Let me scratch that. There's been no discussion of nuclear weapons. That's not on the table."
Ms Clinton pounced, portraying herself as more savvy and dependable on foreign affairs.
"Presidents should be very careful at all times in discussing the use or non-use of nuclear weapons," she said.
"Presidents, since the cold war, have used nuclear deterrence to keep the peace. And I don't believe that any president should make any blanket statements with respect to the use or non-use of nuclear weapons."
Joe Biden, another Democratic rival, described Mr Obama as naive, while Chris Dodd, who has only an outside chance of securing the nomination, said he was inconsistent.

Just photoshop in a beard and an AK-47, and taa daaa! Osama Hussein BinBoogeyman.

This photo was discovered in a hole next to Al-Qaeda plot videos and schematics for WMD's. After seeing this, I just better change my vote for Hillary or McCain...because the terrorists want to blow up me and my Chevy truck.

On a serious tangent, has anyone here really wondered why there hasn't been any terrorist attacks in the US since 9/11? Please don't bother responding with the borders being more secure lines, we know that isn't the case. I'm truly glad that there hasn't been, but all it would take is one suicide bomber on a bus, or in a mall, and all America would panic just as if it were a larger attack (kinda like school shooting copy-cats). Everytime one of those happen people start crying for the repeal of the 2d Amendment, metal detectors, cameras, etc.

Take my freedoms PLEEEEZE, just save me from imminent doom (conveniently ignore the fact that you have an equal chance of being killed by a shark while simultaneously being struck by an asteroid).

Yes I'm cynical and sarcastic at times, I'm just tired of people falling for tactics a fifth grader can see through.

talk about nasty tactics...check this out....8)

Attention All Texas Republicans and Independents!!

On March 4th, Texas Republicans and Independents will have an opportunity to end Hillary Clinton's (and Bill's) presidential ambitions once and for all!

Since Texas has on open primary, Republicans and Independents should sign in at their polling place and request a Democratic ballot. They should then vote for Barack Obama. Even James Carville admits that if Hillary loses Texas, "she's done!" Republicans can help make this a reality!!! Just think, no more Clintons in the White House!

Voting Democratic this one time will have NO effect on your ability to vote in the next Republican primary or obviously on your vote in November. Since John McCain has the Republican nomination locked up, voting for McCain or Huckabee at this point will have no effect on the outcome on the Republican side.

After you vote during early voting or on March 4th, you ARE NOT done! Report back to your regular polling place at 7PM on March 4th to sign the Barack Obama list for caucus delegates. In a little known Texas voting quirk, 67 delegates to the Democratic convention will be seated because of these caucuses. This is a full one-third of the total number of Texas delegates. For Hillary to lose, she has to lose the primary votes AND the caucus votes. I urge you to vote against Hillary Clinton by voting for Barack Obama.

Please forward this e-mail to all your Republican and Independent friends so that we can help ensure the Clinton's defeat on March 4th!!!

Something really stinks!

This had got to be a setup.

I just can’t believe the Clintons are behind this one – it smells of Repig to me – but then I don’t know what to believe anymore.

All I know is that this is a very moving and beautiful picture of Obama trying to reconnect to his father in his father’s native country. How could anyone see it as anything other than pure eloquence?

I have now even more respect for this man, but I know there are many low-lives out there who will see it as a negative.

This is very sad – this hurts all of us – it hurts our very spirit and souls.

Maggie as much as said yes we did it and she was not the least sorry it came out. So the clinton camp tried to score off a picture few should have had access to. Maybe they bought it or maybe the conned some poor person who lives in Kenya for hie picture he held with pride for Barack to be in a enthis costume in the land of his father. When pressed for why the clinton camp sent it out maggie yelled "Enough" and stopped the interview about the picture. Say it all to me.

You're so right. It's nice to hear someone see the truth in this picture.

It's a touching photo and we're all idiots if we think there's "danger" in a man showing respect for another culture.

McCain, Bush, & other right wingers make a big pint of saying "RADICAL Mulims". Not "Muslims".

So...even to Republicans, no problem, right?

Yeah I'd say he looks like a typical American recognizing his heritage in this picture. I hope that others too see that as an OK thing. If you think otherwise it's probably the reason you see so many others failing to persuade us now with worn out tacts and strategies.

This guy is about to become the next President, I hope people learn to understand that the only "true Americans" wore head dressings too and had been forced onto reservations. In fact the people bum rushing them off their land had head gear of their own too.

Anything can happen, I hoping for a bright future, one as diverse as our populations reflect. But, I'm also hoping for a leader who will use the constitution not to wipe his nose with it as our current President seems to be doing.

This is just more Obama victim politics. It seems the Obama campaign is just ready to pounce and claim poor Obama is such a victim of Hillary's campaign's racist smears, when, in fact, there is no proof whatever of such tactics. In fact, such tactics really haven't been seen at all. All we've seen is Obama's campaign claiming to be saddened, etc. by these awful attacks.

Does anyone look at where the attacks come from? The Drudge report. This is the same sleaze machine that initiated the whole Monica Lewinsky thing.

Doesn't anybody ever wake up to these Republican smears? The game this time is to make it look like Hillary is somehow associated with some racist attack when it is well known she hasn't a racist bone in her body.

The game here is the Republicans stick something in the media that has a bad smell to it, and then the Obama campaign claims they are victims of Hillary's racist politics.

It is one more lie from Obama. The MSM doesn't seem to want to wake up to this guy. I guess like Bush being elected everyone will look back at whatever disaster Obama's inexperience and incompetence brings and ask how could we have known? It's transparent if you just wake up.

Uh hmmm....Monica story was true and Drudge was right. Sorry to break the news to you.

Also Jennifer Flowers may auction her tapes with Bill. Being a rich liberal, you could bid on those. Last, Bush was elected over Gore, not because of Florida or Ralph Nader but because people did not like the Clintons and took it out on poor Al. This is the reason why Al tried so hard to distance himself from Bill. I'd though to burst your bubble all at once. If you care about your politics then pick a candidate that could win.
