Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., right, is dressed as a Somali Elder by Sheikh Mahmed Hassan, left, during his visit to Wajir, a rural area in northeastern Kenya, near the borders with Somalia and Ethiopia in this file photo from Aug. 27, 2006. The garb was presented to Obama by elders in Wajir. Obama's estranged late father was Kenyan and Obama visited the country in 2006, attracting thousands of well-wishers. (AP Photo)

WASHINGTON — A photograph circulating on the Internet of Democratic Sen. Barack Obama dressed in traditional local garments during a visit to Kenya in 2006 is causing a dustup in the presidential campaign over what constitutes a smear.

The Associated Press photograph portrays Obama wearing a white turban and a wraparound white robe presented to him by elders in Wajir, in northeastern Kenya. Obama's estranged late father was Kenyan and Obama visited the country in 2006, attracting thousands of well-wishers.

The gossip and news Web site The Drudge Report posted the photograph Monday and said it was being circulated by "Clinton staffers" and quoted an e-mail from an unidentified campaign aide. Drudge did not include proof of the e-mail in the report.

"I just want to make it very clear that we were not aware of it, the campaign didn't sanction it and don't know anything about it," Clinton spokesman Howard Wolfson said in a teleconference with reporters. "None of us have seen the e-mail in question. If anybody has independent reporting that they've done on it I would welcome it."

Obama, in an interview with WOAI radio in San Antonio, Texas, said voters are "saddened when they see these kind of politics."

"Everybody knows that whether it's me or Senator Clinton or Bill Clinton that when you travel to other countries they ask you to try on traditional garb that you have been given as a gift," he said. "The notion that the Clinton campaign would be trying to circulate this as a negative on the same day that Senator Clinton was giving a speech about how we repair our relationships around the world is sad."

Obama campaign manager David Plouffe accused Clinton's campaign of "the most shameful, offensive fear-mongering we've seen from either party in this election."

Clinton campaign manager Maggie Williams said the Obama campaign's reaction was inflaming passions and distracting voters.

"Enough," Williams said in a statement. "If Barack Obama's campaign wants to suggest that a photo of him wearing traditional Somali clothing is divisive, they should be ashamed. Hillary Clinton has worn the traditional clothing of countries she has visited and had those photos published widely.

"This is nothing more than an obvious and transparent attempt to distract from the serious issues confronting our country today and to attempt to create the very divisions they claim to decry."

In a teleconference with reporters, retired Air Force Gen. Scott Gration, an Obama adviser who accompanied the Illinois senator to Kenya two years ago, said the senator was there to learn how tribes were organizing themselves.

"And in the course of this, Senator Obama was given an outfit and as the guest that he was, the great guest, he took this outfit and they encouraged him to try some of it on," Gration said. "It was a thing that we all do."

In December, two Clinton Iowa volunteers resigned after forwarding a hoax e-mail that falsely said Obama is a Muslim possibly intent on destroying the United States. Obama is a member of the United Church of Christ and says he has never been a Muslim, but false rumors about Islamic ties are circulating on the Internet.

Here is the site where the picture came from, and a short article that explains it. It was first puplished to the web back at the end of August 06 and has been floating around for months.

Folks, it was the Drudge report, and if he had information that could link it to Hillary or her campaign, do you think he could keep himself from poating it? He'd be wetting himself to get it out on the site with all the bloody details.
hope this post makes it on.

She insults muslims in Iowa, African Americans in NH and SC, now Africans in Ohio. That pretty much cover half the globe!

Screw the Africans, who needs muslims, they're all terrorists! HRC is thinking ahead, she is simply trying to be efficient - this is the 'strategery' to make her job in the WH so much easier - less people you have to deal with!

Hold it a minute. Since when do we trust anything that the Drudge report says? I've been very disappointed by the low road that the Clinton campaign has taken lately but this smells to me like one of those smears that has nothing to do with Clinton and is meant to hurt them both. Wonder what Carl Rove has been doing lately??

Article from Atlantic on Clinton's connection to Drudge:
http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/200712/clinton-obama/2

Snip:
Perhaps the ultimate example of hard-won experience is the relationship that developed last year, brokered by an outside ally, between the Clinton campaign and a man who was once a sworn enemy: Matt Drudge, the Internet pioneer. (News of the Monica Lewinsky scandal first broke on the Drudge Report.) In a Democratic primary, news that the Clinton campaign is funneling information to Drudge is potentially explosive—few figures inspire more liberal wrath than Drudge. (When I confronted the mole, she confirmed the connection to Drudge, but first asked for anonymity.) Still, Drudge has proved a useful tool for the campaign in framing media coverage. When it became clear that Obama had raised more first-quarter money for the primary race than Clinton had, the Clinton campaign minimized the damage by preemptively leaking its own numbers to Drudge. “Clinton Blows the Field Away” was the headline on an exclusive Drudge story claiming she had raised $36 million. Only later, with much less fanfare, did it become clear that only $19 million would count toward the Democratic primary.

The Clinton campaign has also used Drudge to go on offense. In one example, an aide confirmed that the campaign sent Drudge a link to a story in which Michelle Obama seemed to take a swipe at Hillary Clinton over Bill’s infidelity. The story was presented—from Clinton to Drudge to the public—in a manner that was badly out of context, with a link to an exclusive videotape of Michelle Obama’s comment. But it nevertheless dominated the news cycle for 24 hours.

Any information with the name: "Matt Drudge" attatched is automatically suspect in my view.

Drudgealways turns out to be in the PAY of one or the other of the pricipals in any controversy he "reports" on.

Whether such pay is DIRECT finacial renumeration (as, was the case with some of the whitewater/Paula Jones related muckracking), or is measured in terms of access and influence to the powerful in Washington....(often MORE valuable).......

..... Drudge's "reportings" will always be slanted if not partly FABRICATED and thus, not worth the paper thet are NOT printed on! (Cyber-wise). Regards...............................tm

Hillary Clinton is proving once and for all that she is lacking the character necessary to lead our nation. Shameful.

I wouldn't worry about the Obama campaign. They have forcefully pushed back on the shrew and will continue to do so. Also, judging by how quickly she is sinking in the polls... If he pushes back on her 'effectively enough' tomorrow night, she's sunk.

Didn't the Clinton campaign deny the inappropriate email in Iowa, defaming Obama's upbringing... until they had to release a staffer for the email in question?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:43 PM on 02/25/2008

if this indeed came from the Clinton campaign (and given the attacks since the debate, it wouldn't surprise me), it ends any sympathy I had for Clinton.

on the other hand, though the release of the photo is clearly designed to inflame, Obama should be proud to be such an honorable and honored guest. It reaffirms his beliefs about working with others, however different, rather than dehumanizing them. Actions indeed, not just words.

and I believe that the majority (not all, alas) of this nation will see this for what is is. So the end result is that those who believed Obama is Muslim and can't be trusted will continue to do so (as evidenced by other comments here), and those who didn't won't change their mind. Only Clinton will be harmed.

I am sorry to see Mr. Obama even dignify this nonsense with a response.

Still, since he has addressed this, I would just like to see him appear at the next debate in full Masai Warrior regalia or something of that nature! THAT should defuse this craziness!

I hope we have reached the low point of this campaign. However, I trust Ms. Clinton will be able to go even lower.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:27 PM on 02/25/2008

Sorry to see you are one more gullible Obama person who believes that Obama's "diginifying this nonsense with a response" is not simply Obama's campaign tactic of claiming victimhood to rile up all you supporters in his defense.

Won't you all be surprised when you find out that these so-called attacks on Obama were really Obama's campaign itself trolling for anything that even seemed like it could be interpreted as either an attack, or some slight against black people, etc. and then playing to the hilt to get all you Moonies riled up.

When the kool-aid wears off some time in the coming months, maybe a couple of years for the more hard-core, those of you with any capacity of self-analysis will recognize that you've been had. Meanwhile the Republican smear machine will have succeeded one more time in screwing the working people of America.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:33 AM on 02/26/2008

I can agree with RoseMerry that it's unfortunate Obama felt he was forced to respond (and strongly) to the photograph.

I don't believe (don't want to?) that Sen. Obama or his subordinates have FABRICATED attacks as "RichLiberal" suggests.

I do however, COMPLETELY concer that a significant number of the Senators supporters have vastly exaggerated, misinterpreted and in at least two significant cases, deliberately and falsely manufactureed outrage over so-called "racially insensitive" remarks by the Clintons.

Further, I believe they KNEW that there was no "racial insensitivty" (which quickly transmuted to "playing the race card", and then flat out "racist remarks") but deliberately ginned up the controversy to influence the vote in the S. Carolina primary and beyond.

Please note I did not say they did this for "cheap political gain"......
Locked in a dead heat for the nomination (and likely the Presidency itself) in the most important election in TWO GENERATIONS, either of these two seasoned hardball politicians would be remiss to FAIL to do anything that is LEGAL to win.

That they should also do what is "MORAL" is no less true....but that's a much more complicated question largely dependent on where one stands.

For purposes of argument, let's imagine that Hillary Clinton personally discovered and released this photo. It is after all an unretouched photo that Sen. Obama voluntarily (I would assume PROUDLY) had taken.

Guess what kids... this is hardball politics,at the HIGHEST level, with ALL the money at stake...(the Republicans will have no ambiguity about THAT, I can assure you.)

What is sad about the controversy is that Sen. Obama's response CANNOT be what he AND Sen. Clinton (and me) WISH politics could allow it to be.

Rather than express outrage over short-term tactics I believe the Senator's natural inclination would be to forthrightly stand up and express great pride in his ethnic heritage, and use the opportunity to open up a dialog with the American people about the differeence between... say... a Kenyan elder and a Taliban warlord.....and the FOLLY of believing that all or even very many Muslims are our enemy....(they are not)!!!!

He cannot do this for obvious reasons...
It was legacy of Racism against African-Americans that allowed the MLK/LBJ and the Jesse Jackson flaps in S Carolina to work against the Clintons, the current anti-Muslim predudice that makes this photo any different from one of Ted Kennedy wearing the "tartan and fedora" on a visit to Ireland.

In both cases, the decision power for tactics like these to succeed or fail rests with WE THE PEOPLE who can choose not to be swayed by irrational predudice old OR NEW................................tm

The Clinton campaign should get it in their head that people are not supporting Obama out of ignorance. (Just check the NY Times polls.) Her campaign has been harping about Obama's peculiarities for months now. The overpaid nincompoops in Clinton campaign need to understand that Obama's strangeness is part of his appeal. The nation is ready to turn the page, and move forward.

This is all just a Republican ploy to knock Hillary out of the race. Republican votes in so many states that have given Obama the wins. Hillary has won the majority of the Democratic votes. Republicans have obviously been deployed to these websites to pretend like they are transformed Republicans and Democrats for Obama. But the level of hatred that is constantly on display is what gives them away. No Democrat would behave this way. That is why so many Democrats who post on these websites are quite shocked
that the posts are so vicious and sound so Republican like--because, for the most part, they are. And they know how easily Democrats can be manipulated. After all, we, the Democrats, helped put Bush into office--TWICE!! Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me again and again, watch out!

Sure, Musicstreet, it's a Republican ploy to knock out Hillary, the candidate they've been praying to run against because she'll bring out the Republican base and because she has the lowest poll numbers against McCain... don't think so. This is who the Clintons are.

Many Dems (or ex-Dems gone independent, like myself) have realized that there's no hope for the Dem party because the senior officials don't have the stones to stand up to the Clintons. I'll support Obama, but not blindly support the party, not any more.

Read the article posted on this site about Kathleen Kennedy. She acknowledged the inappropriateness of CLinton's behavior in S. Carolina. Yes, Dems DO behave this way... I wouldn't have believed it before this race.

Yes, only Republicans who are voting for Obama, it's all a vast right-wing Conspiracy to deny Hillary her rightful place in the White house and the Tooth Fairy sent that e-mail from Clinton's campaign HQ, not one of her operatives.

Explain one thing to me: why would the Republigoons want to have a nominee running against them who is polling 9% higher than McCain when Hillary can't even beat McCain in the same polls? Oh, of course, those polls are biased and part of the same vast right wing conspiracy. Got any more of that Clintonaide to spare?

Part of Obama's heritage is Kenyan. What the heck is wrong with him honoring that?

I'd slough it off. You have to ignorant to think this is harmful one way or another.

But...since the picture was released with malice in mind, the Clinton campaign (if they are responsible for its release)has sunk lower once again. I'm not sure when the lowest is ever reached, but the Clintons are getting close.

Drudge doesn't want to give up the email or a name, and yet, the media has pinned it all on the Clinton campaign. Interesting that she may be taking flack for a picture that anyone could have sent via the internet. It makes me wonder if Hillary Clinton is the target of smear and not Obama.

No doubt Drudge is looking at his hand. He can stay in the news for 36 hours on what he's published already. He'll stay in the news for another 36 if he publishes the email immediately after that. Worst case, Hillary wins the nomination and he unloads the bomb then. Thousands upon thousands of turned-off of Democrats will simply not turn out to vote.

Oh please!

if the Clinton campaign didn't do it, they would have come out swinging since this morning- denouncing it for what it is: a play on the ignorance and xenophobic nature of some people. And we see how outraged she can be if she feels that a story is not true!

They waited until the story was nice and ripe, then came out and blamed Obama!

It was wrong for Obama to immediately attack Clinton for a claim Drudge made that he has yet to offer evidence for. Even the media has made it clear that this is currently an allegation rather than a proven thing.

Drudge should release the email to settle this issue once and for all. What is he waiting for?

I'm not saying that it wasn't someone in the Clinton camp, but I think we should refrain from hurling accusations until we have more evidence.

Maggie did not deny it came from them. Straight up the clinton camp did it. There is only a few who were around when this picture was taken so I'd guess it was sold to the clinton group and they let it out to drudge so he would be the cover. When confronted on why they did it all Maggie did was yell "Enough". Says it all. Since Maggie took over Hilary has become multiple personality crazy. The debate will just be another attack fest for Hillary and she might go completely off her nut and cry who knows might be a fine show to watch.
