Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., right, is dressed as a Somali Elder by Sheikh Mahmed Hassan, left, during his visit to Wajir, a rural area in northeastern Kenya, near the borders with Somalia and Ethiopia in this file photo from Aug. 27, 2006. The garb was presented to Obama by elders in Wajir. Obama's estranged late father was Kenyan and Obama visited the country in 2006, attracting thousands of well-wishers. (AP Photo)

WASHINGTON — A photograph circulating on the Internet of Democratic Sen. Barack Obama dressed in traditional local garments during a visit to Kenya in 2006 is causing a dustup in the presidential campaign over what constitutes a smear.

The Associated Press photograph portrays Obama wearing a white turban and a wraparound white robe presented to him by elders in Wajir, in northeastern Kenya. Obama's estranged late father was Kenyan and Obama visited the country in 2006, attracting thousands of well-wishers.

The gossip and news Web site The Drudge Report posted the photograph Monday and said it was being circulated by "Clinton staffers" and quoted an e-mail from an unidentified campaign aide. Drudge did not include proof of the e-mail in the report.

"I just want to make it very clear that we were not aware of it, the campaign didn't sanction it and don't know anything about it," Clinton spokesman Howard Wolfson said in a teleconference with reporters. "None of us have seen the e-mail in question. If anybody has independent reporting that they've done on it I would welcome it."

Obama, in an interview with WOAI radio in San Antonio, Texas, said voters are "saddened when they see these kind of politics."

"Everybody knows that whether it's me or Senator Clinton or Bill Clinton that when you travel to other countries they ask you to try on traditional garb that you have been given as a gift," he said. "The notion that the Clinton campaign would be trying to circulate this as a negative on the same day that Senator Clinton was giving a speech about how we repair our relationships around the world is sad."

Obama campaign manager David Plouffe accused Clinton's campaign of "the most shameful, offensive fear-mongering we've seen from either party in this election."

Clinton campaign manager Maggie Williams said the Obama campaign's reaction was inflaming passions and distracting voters.

"Enough," Williams said in a statement. "If Barack Obama's campaign wants to suggest that a photo of him wearing traditional Somali clothing is divisive, they should be ashamed. Hillary Clinton has worn the traditional clothing of countries she has visited and had those photos published widely.

"This is nothing more than an obvious and transparent attempt to distract from the serious issues confronting our country today and to attempt to create the very divisions they claim to decry."

In a teleconference with reporters, retired Air Force Gen. Scott Gration, an Obama adviser who accompanied the Illinois senator to Kenya two years ago, said the senator was there to learn how tribes were organizing themselves.

"And in the course of this, Senator Obama was given an outfit and as the guest that he was, the great guest, he took this outfit and they encouraged him to try some of it on," Gration said. "It was a thing that we all do."

In December, two Clinton Iowa volunteers resigned after forwarding a hoax e-mail that falsely said Obama is a Muslim possibly intent on destroying the United States. Obama is a member of the United Church of Christ and says he has never been a Muslim, but false rumors about Islamic ties are circulating on the Internet.

No-one from the Clinton camp has denied tht they are sending out this picture. In fact they are basically saying, who cares, why is this such an issue? They are trying to sweep it under the rug. Some are right in saying that Drudge is using it to his advantage, but that doesn't exonnerate Clinton from her campaigns actions.

In fact they are saying that Obama is trying to distract people from the issues...by addressing a photo that the Clinton campaign is circulating...to make him look like a good international diplomat? Talk about suspending your disbelief.

At least when Obama sends out an attack mailer, it is still about the issues. Hillary likes to say that this Obama uses Rove's playbook. This bull is Karl Rove through and through. This is conservative calls to voters asking how they would feel if Bushs opponent had an illigitimate black baby.

And Clinton claiming that she doesn't know about the photo; we're going to let a person run the country who has twice let members of her campaign use race and ethnicity to falsely attack this man?

This should be filed under "You know you're loosing when.... "

How low does Hillary have to get? I expect this from the Republicans.... but from a fellow Democrat?

This and the "plagiarism" bullshit is petty and terrible.... obviously Hillary is scraping the bottom of the barrel normally reserved for Republicans....

Oi... it's entirely disengenuous to claim that the circulation of this picture isn't to stir up racism and bigottedness. Everyone already knows that Obama is fighting that issue daily - so the picture serves only to feed the fire.

OF COURSE it isn't racist or bigotted to HAVE such a picture - as has been said - it is an honor bestowed, and welcomed by politicians to be greeted in the ceremonial garb of the cultures they visit. This is, in fact, a very NICE picture. But the context of pulling it out now, in the heat of battle, is just another game of dirty tricks.

And moreover - Maggie Williams knows this. I have nothing good to say about her so-called rebuttal.

Drudge hates the Clintons (and himself, obviously). Plus, he is a rethug. He is more than happy to put this pic out there because he can blame the Clintons, he can get the conservatives in an uproar (as well as Obama, apparently) and he can poo-poo on requests for proof, as he normally does so that he his ego can get a boost because now he's thrown his big head in the mix.

Obama jumped right on Drudge's bandwagon..so easily accepting of a republican.

If this was a Republican trick they would have waited until Obama HAD sewn up the nomination. They would not have put it out now, they would have waited until it would do more damage to the Democrats. This stinks of the Clintons, they think only of themselves. If Hillary gets the nomination she will lose most of Obama's supporters and sink the Democrats chances in November.

My heart sunk when I saw this pictur, not because it is wrong,it is only right for a visiting dignitary to wear customary clothing of the soil you are visiting. It sunk because of what the neo-cons will do with it and how many millions of redneck dollars it will raise.I can see it now with every commercial Baracks middle name plastered in big bold letters dead center. And there are enough bigit ignorant people in this country to fall for it.I just hope and pray that the majority will not and see right through it for the picture it really is and not the framed argument it will become

"how many millions of redneck dollars it will raise"

please, there are many rednecks fighting in Iraq, and probably marrying a couple Iraqis' too. By the way this is Kenyan garb, a war on terror allies. I think this country is showing, they are not as ignorant as some Democrats want to paint them, and after 9/11 (even though some Hillary Supporters want to pretend it did not happen) people are in semi-trascendent maybe survival mode. The rednecks, to use your term, that are giving their life to Iraq are NOT thinking as backwards as some Clinton supporters. Have you been in a coma the last 8 years and you are still in 1999.

Then Obama's camp should be sure to spend some of its millions of dollars making an answer ad showing Bu$h, Hillay and Bill all in traditional tribal garments (which they all have worn and been photographed in). Obama's campaign has so much money and support this type of attack will not do the kind of damage that you are afraid of.

don't insult "rednecks" - as a black American, with some history with words and meanings - i find the term offensive and racist, and disgusting to be using this word to describe fellow Americans (whites) who live a certain way, or have a certain amount of money.

I'm not even sure how to define that word. All i know is that it makes me sick hearing it.

Ohio and Texas, please do me Richard a simple but important favor on March 4th. Put an end to Hillary once and for all. She comes off like the Glen Close character in Fatal Attraction. Please put a dagger in her political heart on March 4th and ensure she is politically deceased once and for all. Do it for America.

Thank in advance Ohio & Texas.

Kind Regards,
Ricard

...IkeCHicago, I doubt that highly...the DNC is turning a blind eye and a deaf ear to HRC's antiques and the extent to which she is damaging the Democratic party, to the utter joy of the Republicans...

...I doubt seriously that were the roles reversed and she, not Sen. Obama, had been winning in these record numbers and doing so well, unprecedently, I doubt that the DNC would have allowed the good Senator from Illinois to still be in this race today!...

...it's the hypocrisy, double standards and cowardice of the DNC...showing in full force in this race...the Republicans sure have their work cut out for them by the Democrats...yet again!...

I love the photo. We are supposed to be an icon of democracy, which means we are a tolerant nation, and the acceptance of different cultures, religions and races is the epitome of democracy. Doubtful if anyone else in the race would have the balls to do this. This photo speaks very highly of Obama and his willingness to embrace the world.

More proof that Obama has what it takes... How come we have no pics of Hillary in diplomatic situations, letting herself get involved with local dress and experiences?

Well don't that just beat all that Obama would be seen in village garb in Kenya...

I guess this pic means that Hillary is in a lesbian affair with Suha Arafat:
http://www.mererhetoric.com/images/hillarysuhakiss.jpg

and this one means that she supported and participated in the corruption of the Bhutto government and was behind having her killed...

http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u96/mtca/bhuttoclinton.jpg

and here is one of her accepting a bribe from a famous SF Bay Area sitar player on behalf of the Tamil Tigers

http://www.siliconeer.com/past_issues/2007/november_2007/CC-habib.jpg

and this one is of Hillary on the phone ordering the 911 attacks:

and, well, this one is self explanatory:

http://www.oilempire.us/graphics/hillaryalien.jpg

So where are the picks of Dubya in Arab garb and dancing with the Saudis who provided the majority of the 911 hijackers... you know, Saudi Arabia that exports jihadists to attack US targets in the world and funds them? Thats right, the best friends of the Bush family. Maybe I will have to dig it up.. stand by...

Here are some of George Bush kissing and making out with Prince Abdullah

Clinton Spokesperson: "I Don't Know" If A Hillary Staffer Sent Out Obama Somali Photo Or Not
By Greg Sargent - February 25, 2008, 12:33PM

Hillary spokesperson Mo Elleithee, traveling with the campaign, offers some more push-back against the Obama camp's criticism over the Drudge story saying Clinton staffers "circulated" a photo of Obama in Somali garb:

“We have over 700 people on staff. I don’t know if someone on our staff sent it out or not," Elleithee said. “If someone on our staff makes the point that we are treated differently by the press than Sen. Obama, we agree with that sentiment. We don’t think there’s anything wrong with this photo. Sen. Clinton has herself, while traveling abroad, dressed in traditional, local dress. And there’s nothing divisive about that."

He also tried to push back at Obama: "We think it is wrong for the Obama campaign to say that this is divisive photo. It’s not a divisive photo."

The Hillary camp's earlier push-back didn't address the question of whether the Clinton camp had "circulated" the email; now this Clinton spokesperson is saying he doesn't know if any Clinton staffer had any role in it, and is saying that moving the photo shouldn't be seen as controversial in any case.

It's worth pointing out that the sole source thus far for the existence of this email is Drudge, and he didn't say what level of Clinton "staffer" circulated it and to whom it was circulated. Yet this is still commanding a huge amount of attention.

People take a deep breath and then allow some logic into your head. This is a Drudge kill to birds with one stone tactic. He publishes the photo and without any substantiation claim it is from some unidentified person in the Clinton camp. He damages both campaigns and causes a further split in the Dem Party. God, this ploy is so transparent only fools would buy into it. You people need to stop buying into this game.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:04 PM on 02/25/2008

If that was the case, why didn't the Clinton campaign come out and say they did not send it, then condemn the intention behind it and say they are 100% against any kind of attempt to smear their opponent in any way. No, instead they are just asying "we don't see anything wrong with it" which is not acceptable, they obviously approve of the action and the effect it is having. They have crossed the line and there is no turning back for them. Every decent person, whether they support Hillary or not should condemn this.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:38 PM on 02/25/2008

Notice how quickly the Obama camp buys into these things and starts playing the victim. That's the other side of this coin the MSM is conveniently missing.

Hillary's campaign person Wolfson has correctly claimed that when Obama attacks, the media cheers, and esp when Obama claims he is a victim then they all say how low Hillary is sinking.

This is all crap and it will eventually be shown to be such. My advice to Hillary: hang on, hang tough, whatever happens you have run a campaign of integrity, maybe not as slick and sleazy as Obama, but one can't be surprised that you were blind-sided by a so-called Democrat launching Republican attacks.

Finally, all should keep in mind how successful this Republican smear machine has been for decades. In fact, the only time it slipped up was when Bill Clinton deftly used Ross Perot to catch Bush Sr sleeping and manage to win the Presidency.

And he held onto it like a dog, and when the dust settled, the man who campaigned on "It's the economy, stupid", and inherited the worst economic mess the US had ever been in from Reagan Bush, and delivered 8 years of properity and surplus as far as the eye could see.

How was he rewarded? Non-stop attacks by the Republicans, the media, and some pretty lackluster support from his own party.

So, hang in there, Hillary, the real people are with you. You may not win this battle, but there are more ahead, keep building strength and credibility. Someday, maybe will wake up that the smear machine we call the main stream media, has been working on behalf of the Republicans in order to screw the average working American.
