Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., right, is dressed as a Somali Elder by Sheikh Mahmed Hassan, left, during his visit to Wajir, a rural area in northeastern Kenya, near the borders with Somalia and Ethiopia in this file photo from Aug. 27, 2006. The garb was presented to Obama by elders in Wajir. Obama's estranged late father was Kenyan and Obama visited the country in 2006, attracting thousands of well-wishers. (AP Photo)

WASHINGTON — A photograph circulating on the Internet of Democratic Sen. Barack Obama dressed in traditional local garments during a visit to Kenya in 2006 is causing a dustup in the presidential campaign over what constitutes a smear.

The Associated Press photograph portrays Obama wearing a white turban and a wraparound white robe presented to him by elders in Wajir, in northeastern Kenya. Obama's estranged late father was Kenyan and Obama visited the country in 2006, attracting thousands of well-wishers.

The gossip and news Web site The Drudge Report posted the photograph Monday and said it was being circulated by "Clinton staffers" and quoted an e-mail from an unidentified campaign aide. Drudge did not include proof of the e-mail in the report.

"I just want to make it very clear that we were not aware of it, the campaign didn't sanction it and don't know anything about it," Clinton spokesman Howard Wolfson said in a teleconference with reporters. "None of us have seen the e-mail in question. If anybody has independent reporting that they've done on it I would welcome it."

Obama, in an interview with WOAI radio in San Antonio, Texas, said voters are "saddened when they see these kind of politics."

"Everybody knows that whether it's me or Senator Clinton or Bill Clinton that when you travel to other countries they ask you to try on traditional garb that you have been given as a gift," he said. "The notion that the Clinton campaign would be trying to circulate this as a negative on the same day that Senator Clinton was giving a speech about how we repair our relationships around the world is sad."

Obama campaign manager David Plouffe accused Clinton's campaign of "the most shameful, offensive fear-mongering we've seen from either party in this election."

Clinton campaign manager Maggie Williams said the Obama campaign's reaction was inflaming passions and distracting voters.

"Enough," Williams said in a statement. "If Barack Obama's campaign wants to suggest that a photo of him wearing traditional Somali clothing is divisive, they should be ashamed. Hillary Clinton has worn the traditional clothing of countries she has visited and had those photos published widely.

"This is nothing more than an obvious and transparent attempt to distract from the serious issues confronting our country today and to attempt to create the very divisions they claim to decry."

In a teleconference with reporters, retired Air Force Gen. Scott Gration, an Obama adviser who accompanied the Illinois senator to Kenya two years ago, said the senator was there to learn how tribes were organizing themselves.

"And in the course of this, Senator Obama was given an outfit and as the guest that he was, the great guest, he took this outfit and they encouraged him to try some of it on," Gration said. "It was a thing that we all do."

In December, two Clinton Iowa volunteers resigned after forwarding a hoax e-mail that falsely said Obama is a Muslim possibly intent on destroying the United States. Obama is a member of the United Church of Christ and says he has never been a Muslim, but false rumors about Islamic ties are circulating on the Internet.

Well the Clintons go down slime ally...who would ever think such a thing. Obama inspires and Hillary jumps into the mud. Must be all those years in Arkansas. Now you know why people are FEED UP with politics. Hillary a WASP from a wealthy family from Illinois has finally become "trailer trash" I sorry if I'm insulting people who live in trailers. She's still a slimy politician who will say or do anything to get elected. She no uniter she's a divider just like Bush. Now who is practicing Rovian politics? THE CLINTONS MAKE KARL ROVE PROUD!

Obama will not be harmed. This is have as much damaged as the picture of Bush and Osama together. Only the people that already decided not to vote for Obama will make a big issue about this.

If they didn't circulate it, why make the statement defending the photo? Trying to play dumb isn't going to work.. It's not like it's their job as campaign staff to provide the press with photos of their opponent anyway, so If they circulated it I think we can all figure out why.

The Clinton campaign is not playing dumb. How could someone be "ready to lead on Day 1" and waste $140M.

Go Away Hillary.

There is only one reason why Hillary is circulating Obama in Muslim dress, Obama already has to fight the Muslim label, so showing him in Muslim would confirm suspicions in the eyes of a very few. For those who say why does this matter, I say Hillary is not trying to convince the many, just a few.

Hillary and Bill will divide the Democratic party and they don't care, it's all about the Clintons.

* Obama in Muslim dress *

There is really no such thing as 'Muslim' dress which implies religious clothes used during worship. That's like stating that a Saudi in a suit is wearing 'Christian' dress.

This is the traditional 'tribal' clothing of a Kenyan tribe that's close to the border of Somalia. This tribe happens to be Muslim.

The Obama Muslim problem will grow more and more. It is a real problem, you cannot abandon Muslim religion. There is only one god and mohamed is his prophet; once you pray facing the mecca and have been blessed by a Muslim education there is no way back. Obama is a Muslim from the Muslim point of view and he will forever, His Hussein saint name makes thing even worst. He will be swift boated by the republicans and Mc Cain will win by landslide. I have been saying that for a long time and people say that I am ignorant. His grandmother is muslim, his father was a muslim, his step father was muslim, his mother was muslim and educated her son as a muslim. what more do you want? he is a baptist now! Who cares? Muslim religion is not about conscience it is a ritual religion that cannot be abandoned.

DISCLAIMER: I support Sen. Obama, so don't get your panties in a bunch. But there is a distinct lack of levity in this race lately. I suggest that he issue a press release stating this was a dress rehearsal for a 1950s musical tribute group he has formed with the tentative name of the "Doo-woppa-doo-woppa Obama-mau-maus."

Its not wrong to pick Obama,I think he is a fine man with great hope for our country, byt there is a broader question that dems have to ask themselves. So far there has been almost 20 million votes in the dem primary 10 plus million for Obama and 9plus for Hillary,in the general election in 04 almost 125 million people voted, there are still million of people who dopnt even pay attention closley until the fall race starts. We have has bad luck in the choises in the past with going with the wrong candidate for whatever reasons they are.Kerry was a fine man but did not know how to fight the neo-con political schemes, and now he is backing Obama that should raise pause right there, second the republican machine is going to really punish this man to the hilt for things that should not matter but to millions that will be tuning will.the broader public responds to negitive adds and such.I know in this primary race people say they want change and not to go that way but there are those millions out there that are not paying attention that will respond to the negative war the neo-cons will wage. They are going to rpesent Obama as this democrat dove that wants to hug all our enemies and hope that will amke them like us and forget why they despise us in the first place.Thats not going to happen people will fall for it and look at Mcain as battle tested and ready for anything,as to this new guy that they will frame as sappy and totaly unprepared. Now I'm playing devils advocate here, but I think this is whee Hillary's strength and experience would help. She has already been vetted by the neo-cons and media, they are just warming up for Obama and will not be afraid to go very very negitive. It will make what the Clintons have tried to do look sweet and nice.I could be totally wrong and hope I am but history is not on our side with chosing a candidate that can pull it off and survie the noe-con machine, the Clintons on the otherhand have one election after election against them.Just a thought

You missed the point.Repubs will have mud for every dem.candidate chosen.Besides, Hillary's claimed "long record",is even worse if she's nominated coz the GOP will have lorry tones of mud to unload on her.
As for Obama,if you see the Repubs machine scrambling for petty stuff like Obama middle name, his Chicago pastor, and unpatriotism, etcs, you know they cant find anything to throw at him.

Denver, What you say is accurate and i can attest that my relatives in PA are not political junkie like me and they haven't really heard of Obama, yet. I know it's hard to believe for folks on the internet every day, but most people have other problems and don't think much about all this till the few days before an election. So, given that Obama is barely known, that allows the Republicans to define him and this turban thing is just the beginning of it.
Hillary is , on the other hand , very well known by all and the Repubes can not paint a picture of her.
I pity Obama and his family if he is the nominee, the repukes will make his life miserable and the slime will be coming from a dozen directions. I really dread the fall election.
Oh and BTW, get ready for alot of Obama supporters to slime you now, Denver.

Dont say that, people that were and that are for Hillary would vote for Barack,Mcain or Nadar is not a vialble choice,When it comes to the issues Barack and Hillary have razor thin differences its there styles that are way different and you cant punish a person for that.Barack is magnetic and is a dynamic speaker, just because hillary is not does not mean she lacks passion or ideals for our country. And Barack is probally no political angle, you cant get to where he is and wants to be by being warm and fuzzy all the time,He is just a man and when he plays rough or his team does it for him it is more tolerated than from a woman.

We do not know that this is from the Clintons. The republican wait for us to nominate Obama giving him a honey moon but now after we have made this fatal mistake they will destroy him with lies that have some true behind as they always do. My only hope is that ohio and texas realize the error we are making before it is too late. Obam nomination almost guarantee the Mc Cain presidency.

Your own words prove that the Clintons are behind this. If this was the Republicans they WOULD have waited until Obama WAS the nominee. He isn't yet is he ???? Only the Clintons would profit by this being released now, the Republicans would have waited for a time when it would do more damage.

There are a lot of Republicans deployed to destroy the Hillary nomination so that Obama will become the nominee. And it is working quite nicely. Why do you think they have been so quite? Because they are all going to vote for Barack? Republican operatives are all over these websites posting Hillary hatred so one one will vote for her. She is who they are afraid of, and we will help them achieve their goal.

Barack Obama spoke at a pro-Israel gathering in Cincinnati yesterday. I was surprised and very disappointed that Obama, while trying hard to placate the Israeli lobby, did not utter a word in protest against Israel's brutal entrapment and starvation of a million Palestinian people in Gaza.

Get a grip. There are millions of disenfranchised, starving, imprisoned, unhappy neurotic, sane, victims of floods, earthquake, famine and pestilence.

No candidate can touch on all issues, some blacks aren't happy, because he didn't visit the state of the black union, everyone must get a grip now.

When he is elected, he will speak on and solve many issues.

A picture of Barack Obama, wearing the native garb, in a country of which he is an honored guest; and we ask: This is what is used to scare us, and turn us against Barack Obama? Actually, it may start a new fashion trend.
Somehow I see this as a lack of respect for our intelligence; or maybe is part of the advice from "Blackwater" Mark to go all out and use the fear card. She is also mocking Obama's positive message. This is done all the time by angry and resentful people who have nothing else to offer; but gloom and darkness.
Hillary and Mark know that they are done; so they don't care what the future may be bring. Sure, we will all be fine, except Hillary Clinton, Mark Penn, and Bill Clinton.
The rest of us, we will all be fine.

Enough said.

It is time we stood up for something.

Yes, We Can!

This is just the beginning the republicans are going to destroy him the fact is that he is a muslin from the point of view of the Muslim world Muslim religion is not a conscience religion like ours it is a religion associated with rites and once you pray once even as a children facing the Mecca you are muslin forever your faith really does not matter what you say matter even less I have asked this question to Muslim scholars and all of them have the same answer once a Muslim always a Muslim. I really believe that Obama is sincere in his conversion but it will not be accepted by the Muslim world under any circumstances. His father was a Muslim, his step father was a Muslim his mother was also Muslim and sent him to get proper Muslim education there is no doubt from the Muslim point of view he is Muslim. Go and read about Muslim religion and you will learn the fact and they are very far away from our idea of religion as a matter of choice conscience and faith. The only way to avoid death if you change from Muslim religion is to be declared crazy. The Muslim Obama problem is going to keep growing and if he is the nominated Mc Cain will win by landslide.

First of all the nonsense you are talking about applied ONLY if one lives in a Muslim country! The last time I checked we live in a Christian country - whether people choose to subscribe to Christianity or not.

Second of all, what in the world does this have to do with Obama???

Your [non-]logic is mind boggling!

Millions of people wear turbans who are not Moslems. The mani is a Christian, but even if he weren't you cannot deny his right to run for president.

What if we didn't allow folks who attacked the U.S. to be president?
No British descendants
No French Descendants
No Germans Descendants
No Japanese Descendants
No Vietnamese Descendants
No Korean Descendants
No Latino Descendants
No Arab Descendants
No Italian Descendants
No Europeans,or Asians for president.
No Catholics, Protestants, Methodist or Moslems
Only Quakers, I am pretty sure they haven't attacked anyone!
This is just plain silly. You cannot deny folks the right to run for president because of gender, race, creed, religion.
Now stop being so silly, and start using your brains!
