Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., right, is dressed as a Somali Elder by Sheikh Mahmed Hassan, left, during his visit to Wajir, a rural area in northeastern Kenya, near the borders with Somalia and Ethiopia in this file photo from Aug. 27, 2006. The garb was presented to Obama by elders in Wajir. Obama's estranged late father was Kenyan and Obama visited the country in 2006, attracting thousands of well-wishers. (AP Photo)

WASHINGTON — A photograph circulating on the Internet of Democratic Sen. Barack Obama dressed in traditional local garments during a visit to Kenya in 2006 is causing a dustup in the presidential campaign over what constitutes a smear.

The Associated Press photograph portrays Obama wearing a white turban and a wraparound white robe presented to him by elders in Wajir, in northeastern Kenya. Obama's estranged late father was Kenyan and Obama visited the country in 2006, attracting thousands of well-wishers.

The gossip and news Web site The Drudge Report posted the photograph Monday and said it was being circulated by "Clinton staffers" and quoted an e-mail from an unidentified campaign aide. Drudge did not include proof of the e-mail in the report.

"I just want to make it very clear that we were not aware of it, the campaign didn't sanction it and don't know anything about it," Clinton spokesman Howard Wolfson said in a teleconference with reporters. "None of us have seen the e-mail in question. If anybody has independent reporting that they've done on it I would welcome it."

Obama, in an interview with WOAI radio in San Antonio, Texas, said voters are "saddened when they see these kind of politics."

"Everybody knows that whether it's me or Senator Clinton or Bill Clinton that when you travel to other countries they ask you to try on traditional garb that you have been given as a gift," he said. "The notion that the Clinton campaign would be trying to circulate this as a negative on the same day that Senator Clinton was giving a speech about how we repair our relationships around the world is sad."

Obama campaign manager David Plouffe accused Clinton's campaign of "the most shameful, offensive fear-mongering we've seen from either party in this election."

Clinton campaign manager Maggie Williams said the Obama campaign's reaction was inflaming passions and distracting voters.

"Enough," Williams said in a statement. "If Barack Obama's campaign wants to suggest that a photo of him wearing traditional Somali clothing is divisive, they should be ashamed. Hillary Clinton has worn the traditional clothing of countries she has visited and had those photos published widely.

"This is nothing more than an obvious and transparent attempt to distract from the serious issues confronting our country today and to attempt to create the very divisions they claim to decry."

In a teleconference with reporters, retired Air Force Gen. Scott Gration, an Obama adviser who accompanied the Illinois senator to Kenya two years ago, said the senator was there to learn how tribes were organizing themselves.

"And in the course of this, Senator Obama was given an outfit and as the guest that he was, the great guest, he took this outfit and they encouraged him to try some of it on," Gration said. "It was a thing that we all do."

In December, two Clinton Iowa volunteers resigned after forwarding a hoax e-mail that falsely said Obama is a Muslim possibly intent on destroying the United States. Obama is a member of the United Church of Christ and says he has never been a Muslim, but false rumors about Islamic ties are circulating on the Internet.

Senator Obama, I want to see you confront Hillary Clinton over this in the debate tomorrow night. I want you to ask her to give a straight yes or no answer to the question "Did your campaign or members of your staff put out this photograph?". And if she says yes, I want you to ask her the reasons for doing so.

Since she already said she and her campaign had nothing to do with it, maybe she should ask him if he did, so all of his supporters would start foaming at the mouth again.

May be we do not deserve Senator Obama.

May be we should remain locked up in our racist and bigoted ways.

May be we should continue to view the peoples of the world as inferior beings whose benefit to us lie entirely in how much wealth we can siphon from their veins.

May be we should enjoy the warmth of our relationship with states and regimes that the entire world multiply-denounced for characteristics that competes with ours - in the Middle East and the Near East, in Africa and in Central Asia.

May be we deserve the Bushes and the McCains of the world.

Wow, what is wrong with everyone in this thread? On these boards lately...??

Start using your mind, SHUT OFF THE GOSSIP AND JUDGEMENT AND QUIET YOUR MINDS...

Then you will be able to form an intelligent, objective opinion about issues. There are a scarce few intelligent folks here.. Everyone seems to be a bafoon of hot air directed at anything that doesnt agree with them... This is the behavior of ignorance and low IQ.

3/4 of this country is asleep at the wheel and NOT paying attention to anything of substance.

Left, Right, youre all acting like IDIOTS.

Its like Hatfield/McCoys all over again...
You all can not hold your opinions without attacking each other.. Its a bit pathetic and immature.

I'm sorry, I cannot vote for HRC. I used to love her. Donated to her senate campaign. But I've seen a side of the Clintons which is scary. I don't want McCain to win. But she'll have to do it without my help. Maybe when she has time to reflect, she'll realize how she's alienated people who would have supported her.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:16 PM on 02/25/2008

I don't believe you ever supported Hillary, or else you would not believe this nonsense. She did not do this, would not do this. What should scare you is that so many are so easily fooled by so little. And you should not be one of them. Where did that picture come from?
Was Hillary there taking the picture? It probably came right of Obama's scrapebook, dropped into Drudge's mailbox with a note, "From Hillary, with Love." That makes more sense. The perfect crime, by the perfect con artist.

Now research should tell you that you are a republican. I won't vote for Obama and he says that makes me u a republican. I respect your right to vote for who you want. It's funny I feel they same way about Obama that you do Clinton, I guess that's why it's America. We get to choose.

Yes, I am a life-long registered republican supporting Sen. Clinton (originally was for Sen. Biden). I will vote for Sen. Clinton but not Sen. Obama. If it comes down to McCain/Obama I will be voting for Sen. McCain.

Seemed to me from the research that I have done that most of Sen. Clinton's proposals including funding sources whereas most of Sen. Obama's relied on increased taxes. Larry Kudlow wrote an article about a week ago in which he said that Sen. Obama's proposals were already at the $800 billion mark and that repealing the tax cuts to the rich was not going to pay for them. Guess who gets stuck then with the remainder? The middle class and future generations get to take it in the shorts again.

Don't particularly like Sen. McCain anymore but think he will be better on national security and probably won't do any worse than Sen. Obama would on our national debt.

No offense, but this is my point: You are a republican.

By the way, doubling the capital gains tax, would more then pay all the taxes, because the rich are so much richer then they have ever been before. remember when taxes on income above 2 million dollars would be taxed at 70%? Our economy still thrived.

Just like the before depression, there is plenty of money in the system.

Just like a deadly blood clot, it is concentrated in the top .1%

no I won't, all the Obama supporters here calling us liars and cheats than expect us to turn around and vote for him in the general, I don't think so. Read the posts here, Hillary supporters are called losers and liars by Obama supporters constantly. They threaten violence and insult constantly. That doesn't make me a rethug as you put it, it makes me a person of character that won't support such a hate filled campaign. This is still America, and we can vote for who we want. Since Carter, I have supported the DFL, I have volunteered for the DFL in my State of MN, but I won't vote for a man, who's supporters call me a liar and a cheat. Obama supporters have no idea what party is, and they have fractured the Democratic party with their hate. Rachel Sklar did a blog about SNL and she responded to a poster in her own blog about the hate of the Obama supporters. She said "I can say personally that any comments I make on this site that have cited Hillary with approval have met with some of the worst invective I have ever experienced on this site. It has surprised me, I must say. There is antipathy on both sides of course by that has been my observation." No I think I'll take a page out of Michelle Obama's book, she wouldn't support Hillary, and if she has that right, well than I have a right not to support her husband. A third party will be getting my vote for President, if he is the nominee. Obama supporters should be careful how many other democrats they drive away, I've certainly seen people here who echo my thoughts, and I've talked to people in my life who feel the same.

Matt Drudge is just one more slimy Republican who fancies himself another Karl Rove.
I don't believe anyone on Clinton's staff would be ignorant (or creepy) enough to release this photo, for whatever reason.
I am proud that Senator Obama had the civility and grace to don the native dress of his host nation. That's a sign of respect, which America needs in the global theater.

But you must realize that it makes no difference what Drudge is, the Obamamites for the most part are going to blame the release of the photo on Sen. Clinton's campaign whether the campaign was involved or not. Appears that the Obama followers are more Clinton haters than they are anything else.

A perfect example of the right wing hate machine in action. First, Drudge posts this on his site. Then it gets picked up by the AP. Then Fox News picks it up and runs with it on their website. Then it's everywhere on the Fox News Channel, talk radio, etc. Obama better get used to this if he's the nominee. He needs to respond quickly and forcefully, like McCain has learned to do. Kerry made the mistake of letting the Swiftboaters control the story. Make no mistake, the right wing will try to do the exact same thing in 2008!

As Andrew Sullivan writes - "the AP does a story on Obama's "patriotism" question and CNN delivers a Clintonian push-poll. I'm actually fine with this. The only way to overcome this kind of politics is to endure and transcend it. If we want to say "goodbye to all that," you need to say hello to it for a http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/ic.com/ Kenya: is an allies in the war on terror, we have big oil contract with them, and our press and partisans are mocking and making fun of its garb and using this seemingly innocent thing for political debate? No doubt many Republicans Democrats have worn this outfit in exchange Kenyan oil and money. We shouldn't be mocking Kenya or their traditional dress. So if Obama wears a Mexican Sobrero he is for the Illegal invasion of the US by illegal aliens?? Same with a Chinese garb - is Bush for China ruining the US economy when he wears Chinese dress? The questions should be about tracing monies not wearing garbs. I wonder how much money the Clinton took from the Saudi's for the Clinton library, I wonder why is ok in the Republican's minds for Bush to be walking hand in hand with the Saudi Prince - weren't most of the 9/11 terrorist Saudi? This garb thing is not only bad strategy from an international perspective but a double standard. . We cannot win this war on terror without the support of allies within the Muslim, Christian, Chinese and Jewish communities. Kenya is an allies in the war on terror, i suspect, mocking their regional dress is not good strategy. And probably puts our marines and diplomats in danger. How arrogant the Republicans and some Democrats are. We are not going to win the war on terror mocking our allies and having an ignorant mentality. Ain't going happen and the US military knowns this. We are not in the 1990's as much as we want to be. Have we not learned anything since 9/11? I hope so, nothing has transcended? There are 100,000's of marines out there that hope so. Typical Drudge , Clinton Supporters and some Republicans, never in the military, know nothing about the world outside and likely spend more time "blogging" about war and patriotism.

Who did it? If this is not connected to Sen. Clinton's campaign, then fine, because the whole thing is ridiculous anyway. But if the Clinton campaign is indeed responsible, then the motive is obvious and completely reprehensible. I want Senator Clinton to categorically deny that her campaign had anything to do with this; if not, I can only assume the worst, and it would eliminate any chance that I would support her under any circumstance.

I agree completely. The thing that bothers me is HRC said "Every time I traveled to foreign countries, I wore the costume of the country. You can find dozen of pictures of me in different parts of the world," said Clinton. "You can find me wearing African outfits, Latin American outfits, Asian outfits, when you travel to foreign countries, it’s a sign of respect. What does that have to do with anything?"

You can't possibly equate a picture of HRC, a 60-year-old white woman with an African wrap on, with a picture of Obama who looks like he is in the Taliban.

I can't wait to see who did this.

As I posted above, the same thought has crossed my mind. Might just be another move to increase the hatred against the Clintons. After all, this "new kind of politician" was not above issuing a mailer in Ohio which appears to distort somewhat Sen. Clinton's position on NAFTA. So what is to say this "new kind of politician" would not stoop to other old political stunts?
