Barack Obama, D-Ill., right, is dressed as a Somali Elder by Sheikh Mahmed Hassan, left, during his visit to Wajir, a rural area in northeastern Kenya, near the borders with Somalia and Ethiopia in this file photo from Aug. 27, 2006. WASHINGTON — A photograph circulating on the Internet of Democratic Sen. Barack Obama dressed in traditional local garments during a visit to Kenya in 2006 is causing a dustup in the presidential campaign over what constitutes a smear.

The Associated Press photograph portrays Obama wearing a white turban and a wraparound white robe presented to him by elders in Wajir, in northeastern Kenya. Obama's estranged late father was Kenyan and Obama visited the country in 2006, attracting thousands of well-wishers.

The gossip and news Web site The Drudge Report posted the photograph Monday and said it was being circulated by "Clinton staffers" and quoted an e-mail from an unidentified campaign aide. Drudge did not include proof of the e-mail in the report.

"I just want to make it very clear that we were not aware of it, the campaign didn't sanction it and don't know anything about it," Clinton spokesman Howard Wolfson said in a teleconference with reporters. "None of us have seen the e-mail in question. If anybody has independent reporting that they've done on it I would welcome it."

Obama, in an interview with WOAI radio in San Antonio, Texas, said voters are "saddened when they see these kind of politics."

"Everybody knows that whether it's me or Senator Clinton or Bill Clinton that when you travel to other countries they ask you to try on traditional garb that you have been given as a gift," he said. "The notion that the Clinton campaign would be trying to circulate this as a negative on the same day that Senator Clinton was giving a speech about how we repair our relationships around the world is sad."

Obama campaign manager David Plouffe accused Clinton's campaign of "the most shameful, offensive fear-mongering we've seen from either party in this election."

Clinton campaign manager Maggie Williams said the Obama campaign's reaction was inflaming passions and distracting voters.

"Enough," Williams said in a statement. "If Barack Obama's campaign wants to suggest that a photo of him wearing traditional Somali clothing is divisive, they should be ashamed. Hillary Clinton has worn the traditional clothing of countries she has visited and had those photos published widely.

"This is nothing more than an obvious and transparent attempt to distract from the serious issues confronting our country today and to attempt to create the very divisions they claim to decry."

In a teleconference with reporters, retired Air Force Gen. Scott Gration, an Obama adviser who accompanied the Illinois senator to Kenya two years ago, said the senator was there to learn how tribes were organizing themselves.

"And in the course of this, Senator Obama was given an outfit and as the guest that he was, the great guest, he took this outfit and they encouraged him to try some of it on," Gration said. "It was a thing that we all do."

In December, two Clinton Iowa volunteers resigned after forwarding a hoax e-mail that falsely said Obama is a Muslim possibly intent on destroying the United States. Obama is a member of the United Church of Christ and says he has never been a Muslim, but false rumors about Islamic ties are circulating on the Internet.

The big deal would not be a big deal if Drudge had not been displaying the photo all day long.

Everyone is missing the REAL point here

It's drudge, the propagandist, that is the problem, and everyone is playing his game

I think Obama isn't harmed by this at all, It demonstrates character and a willingness to engage the other perspective when it comes to diplomacy., Good for him for doing it, shame on Hillary and the rest for trying to make something bad out of it...

I seem to recall Dubya dancing in Saudi Arabia, the land that funds and provides many of the people who have attacked our embassies and personel and a bunch of the 911 attackers and their backers as well as OBL... what the hell is he doing that for? Talk about inappropriate. Letting the world and our country see him kissing the friends of the Bush family after 911 - all for the Bush fortune and oil... now that is pandering and should be called what it is.

Bootlicking.

Ahhh yes, Matt Drudge says the photo came from the Hillary campaign---

And netroots Democrats, being the discerning electorate they are, automatically believe him.

Besides, since the photo is a shot of a (harmless) actual event, I'm not sure what the 'sleaze' problem is. Every candidate has a photo op they wish they could re-do.
Might as well get the pic out now, so United States of Amnesia voters have ample time (>1 week) to yawn it off.

Funny though, it seems like a lot of Obama's wierder supporters think Clinton must have photoshopped and disseminated the picture herself.

I think it's about time the Democratic party grew up. If these two front-running candidates went on the same ticket, they'd be unbeatable.

And that, in the end, may be the best solution, because it looks as if HRC may handily win the Ohio primary.

But calling results before they're in is about 'journalist' making deadline, not reporting news.

Excellent point. Anyone who believes Drudge's claim that this picture came from the Clinton camp, please get in touch with me. I own bridges all over America--probably a least one in your town--and I'd be willing to sell you one at a good price.

Matt f**king Drudge! Is this what Democrats are reduced to? I'm glad I'm an independent!

"If these two front-running candidates went on the same ticket, they'd be unbeatable."

Probably a true statement but I do not see either one taking the back seat to the other. I don't think either Sen. Clinton or Sen. Obama entered the presidential race with the idea of being satisified to play second fiddle!

So when BUSH went to visit the home land from wich 14 of the 19 911 hijackers were from and dressed in local garb holding a sword did anyone call him a muslim.

Obama supporters just don't want to acknowledge that there is every chance Senator Clinton and her campaign had nothing to do with this.

from the above:

"I just want to make it very clear that we were not aware of it, the campaign didn't sanction it and don't know anything about it," Clinton spokesman Howard Wolfson said in a teleconference with reporters. "None of us have seen the e-mail in question. If anybody has independent reporting that they've done on it I would welcome it."

It's just as likely that the thing was started by Drudge himself, or the Republican machine, or just some mischief making vandal.

In any case the photograph is quite innocent - there's nothing to be upset about - all this criticism reflects badly on Obama's supporters who seem to see the photo as something bad.

It's just any excuse to get at Clinton isn't it - that's all it boils down to, never mind looking for truth or logic.

I don't care who put it up there, it isn't damaging to Obama at all. He is clearly able to mix with others, wear their local clothes and appeal to their local sensibilities - even in Kenya.
This is not a slur against Obama, its proof that he is capable and diplomatic.
Compare this with that dumbass that just was in Africa, you know our current President... I think Obama sets a great example...

Seems kind of odd to me that there is such a stir over this photo. Is Obama not proud of his ancestry"? Why did he as the "new kind of politican" not release this photo himself some time ago to show his diversity? If the Obamamites are going to get upset about this, they are going to really be upset as this campaign goes on. The republican spin machine (corporate media) has hardly even begun to warm up its machine. As the corporate media shows more and more interest in its darling, Sen. McCain, and loses interest in its temporary idol, Sen. Obama, the attacks on Obama will probably become almost unending.

Looks like another "false flag" operation to me.

The right wing can put this crap on Drudge, then get it into the mainstream news when the Obamist fanatics start screaming, without evidence, about the evil Clintons.

Once again, the Obamists are getting played. Once again, they are hurting the Democratic party.

This pales in comparison to the fundraising and fervor that the Republicans are going to enjoy if Hillary had won the nomination. If this is the best that the Republicans can do, they're in worse shape than I thought. So far I've heard Obama's middle name (ohhhh "Hussein" - his parents 48 years ago gave him the middle name of the first name of the guy who used to be the president of Iraq. Cue the scary music!), and this...even in the Drudge report, at the bottom, they have Bush, and both Clintons in the same type of traditional garb. So what!? I don't care, and neither will 80% of the rest of the country.

This is only the beginning of the Republican "death by a thousand cuts" on Obama. He hasn't sewed up the nomination yet, so at this point they are merely chipping away with the small arms fire. The big guns come in later. You have no idea what's in store. You'll see. Obama is going to be in big trouble and the way his supporters are alienating the rest of the Democrats isn't going to help him.

As for Republican fundraising fervor, when Clinton was thought to be the certain Democratic nominee, the Republicans couldn't fund any of their candidates--they were all in hock. McCain even had to cut way back and looked like a lost cause. Your claim about Republican fundraising, like most of the Obamist claims is baloney.

I think Obama looks distinguished in this. The picture is not a good picture. But it certainly shows that we will finally have a president that is welcome and completely at ease in totally new areas of the world.
How refreshing. A president who is open to celebrating his Kenyan and Kansan roots.
And I say this as an Irish American who is proud of my lineage, my country, but sick and tired of the same old points of view. Time to turn the page and embrace the beauty and wisdom of all cultures.

You are all so stoned.....Bush was LOVED by the AFRICANS...LOVED. It kills you doesn't it.

Bush is twice the Presaident either of these two flunkies would be. It's a good thing we'll never get to see. Neither of them have a shot.

Obama will beat Hillary, but after a while his veneer will fade and his true platform will be in full view.

1)The American people will just NOT vote for a Socialist, sorry.

2)Especially if he used to be or possibly still is a Muslim.

3) Not to mention, he doesn't appear the least bit interested in being patriotic. Laugh if you want, the people need this from their President. He ain't got it.

True or not, he has to deal with the fact that many believe these to be true about him.

Hillary is done. Obama is next.

"Hillary is done. Obama is next." Unfortunately as a Sen. Clinton supporter I think you are probably right. Would love to see both of us be wrong.

As a registered republican I will not be supporting or voting for Sen. Obama. I might be involved in the "Obama is next" because I will be voting for Sen. McCain if it is a McCain/Obama contest.

It is getting more and more difficult for me to keep saying I will vote for Clinton, should she win the Dem nomination. I keep telling myself and everybody else that she is a safer, saner choice than John McCain, and I still believe she is. But she and her camp are REALLY starting to set my teeth on edge.

i never did like the idea of these so-called diplomatic gifts --- i would image that the money these things cost could be used for better things, like feeding kids. side shows. fluff. time wasted. flying around the globe like jet-setters. but i guess its one the perks these folks look forward too. and its a good one to --- and we paid for the trips !!!!!

As an Obama supporter, I wish Plouffe and staff would stop falling prey to these foolish Rovian tactics that serve to make their campaign react in a way that goes against Obama's message of fueling "silly" campaign tactics!!!

Follow Obama's lead and remain above the frey of those who feel desperate measures are necessary to capture their one and only last chance to achieve power!!!

Obama '08!!!!

"Follow Obama's lead and remain above the frey (sic)..."

Uh, he's been going negative too. Classic example, John Edwards prior to the Iowa caucuses...but most of the Obama camp's 'sleaze' never made it to the national press clips, or the internet. But I was in Iowa City when every candidate was trooping through the Hamburg Inn for photo ops, and local news had no shortage of his nasty quotes.

He never was 'above the fray,' but he's certainly been portrayed that way.

No worries, IF he wins the Democratic primary (and that is still a very open question) I'll vote for Obama.

But it's funny to see how some of the 'netroots' demand that HRC roll over and die, getting out of the way for the messiah's second coming, instead of fighting tooth and nail to the actual end of the election....like they wish Kerry had.

Decidedly strange.
