I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Chris Dodd Obama

UPDATE: Dodd describes his "not comfortable" discussion in which he informed Hillary about his decision:

At a Cleveland press conference with Obama, Dodd denied he was implying Sen. Hillary Clinton should drop out, but merely suggesting that both campaigns watch their tone over the next week leading up to the critical Ohio and Texas contests.

Dodd said he informed Clinton last night of his decision to endorse Obama, adding that it was "not a comfortable" discussion.

UPDATE: Dodd used his endorsement to pitch a new message for the Obama camp -- that it is time for Democrats to unite around a single candidate:

"It is now the hour to come together," he told reporters in Cleveland. "I believe the hour has come now for us to make that choice - to stand up and say we're going to get behind this candidacy."

"I don't want a campaign that is only divisive here, and there's a danger of it becoming that," he said. "Not because the candidates want that, but too often the advisors the consultants others are seeking for that divisiveness."

"After a prolonged silence through most of the primary season, Sen. Christopher J. Dodd is rejoining the presidential race on somebody else's team -- Sen. Barack Obama's."

The Connecticut senator, whose own presidential campaign failed to draw enough attention to propel him past the first contest in Iowa, is expected to announce his endorsement of Obama this morning, according to a Democratic official close to Dodd. He'll then campaign with Obama in Ohio.

Obama's campaign hopes that the March 4 primaries in Ohio, Texas, Vermont and Rhode Island will be the victory that clinches the Democratic nomination for him. When he faces Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton in another debate tonight -- the last before these pending primaries -- he'll do it with Dodd in his corner.

It's unclear what Dodd's task will be with the campaign or whether he'll be hitting those last two New England states still awaiting primaries next week. But if Obama eventually gets the nomination, Connecticut's two senators will be in opposing campaigns. Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman is one of Republican Sen. John McCain's staunchest allies.

The Washington Post's Shailagh Murray notes:

Like Sen Joseph Biden (D-Del.) and New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, Dodd has been heavily courted by both the Obama campaign and that of Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.), including numerous calls from former President Bill Clinton. But the veteran senator had been reluctant to weigh in until voters across the country, including from his home state of Connecticut (which Obama won on Super Tuesday) could weigh in.

Much more from AP:

Dodd's support, coupled with his liberal credentials, could provide a boost for Obama as major contests near in big states such as Ohio and Texas on March 4. Obama has won some key Democratic endorsements in recent weeks, including Massachusetts Sen. Edward Kennedy, a close friend of Dodd.

Obama and rival Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton had been vying for Dodd's support since he exited the presidential race after a poor showing in the Iowa caucus last month. Dodd, who won his Senate seat in 1980 and chaired the Democratic National Committee from 1995-1996, has long-standing ties to the Clintons.

Dodd is a "superdelegate," one of nearly 800 Democratic officeholders and party officials who automatically attend the national convention and can vote for whomever they choose. They have become an important force in the close race between Clinton and Obama, and both candidates are lobbying hard for their support.

And you make one more. Listen up. Most of these guys like Kerry and Dodd go whichever way the wind is blowing. Obama has NO record in the senate and believe me they see him as someone they can twist to do their will with the mantra "don't forget who came through for ya boy".

This Obamination of an election will come back to bite America in the ass if if Barry and ghetto girl make it into the white house.

He's not "officially" backing Obama. He publicly announced that he had voted for Senator Obama and would "probably" support him as a delegate at the convention but stopped short of an actual endorsement.

He's going to wait until the candidate is inevitable. It's not about the spotlight, it's about the fact that he actually has delegates to pledge. I don't think that he wants to be in a position where he can be accused of using his delegates to usurp the nomination for one candidate or the other. Both sides are pissed at him because he hasn't endorsed yet, but he's doing the right thing to wait until after March 4.

"Obama clearly has an advantage in that he doesn't suffer from multiple preosnality (sic)disorder."

That is one explanation. Another would be that she is too calculating, too beholden to polls of public opinion, which changes, and responsive positioning. If she were not applying this method, how else does she explain why she waited until 70% of Americans disapproved of the Iraq War in 2006 before she began to speak out about its misguidedness?

You may be right, it could be schizophrenia.

Which HRC is coming out at the debate? Its like watching Cybil. I can't keep track of all the Hillary's.

Board Room CEO Hillary:'I have a Power Point of MY Thoughts and MY Ideas and MY direction and MY mandates. I will close with a 10 point dissertation on everything I have accomplished, what I have done, what I did, what I do, what I did that you didn't do, what I did when I was busy doing all the other stuff no one else did and then I will close with all the photos ever taken of me, what I wear, all my hairstyle...then I will take questions about ME, what I have done, What I accomplished, what I did that you didn't do...'

Manipulative Mom Hillary: I've worked my fingers to the bone for you ungrateful wretches, 35 years of giving birth to you, the stretch marks, for you, staying with that sleeze bag Bill for all for you, look at all the things I gave you, the late nights, me scrubbing the floors on the late shift...its been hard and I don't sniff know sniff how tear drop I get it all done...

Wicked Pissed Fatal Attraction Hillary:'You will not ignore me! Shame On You, Shame, Shame on all of your hope crap, and your uniting crap, and your high road crap and all that pie in the sky bullshit that I don't believe in...YOU and your Big Crowds...and your little rabbit...oh wait a rabbit, here let me go boil your rabbit Obama!'

Hllary is the most decent and qualified candidate. Just because the Democratic party is smoozing this arrogant upstart who likes the republicans, looks down on women does not have some of us fooled.
We know if he gets the nomination and is elected, Social Security will be damaged, women's growth possibilaties will be stiffled, health care for the mulitudes will not happen. His health care plan cannot work.

Yes all the weak lemmings are now running to get on board with BO now. I now regard Dodd in the same category as Chapaquidick Ted and loser Kerry.

Women's dreams of a better country and a better world will be shattered if the deluded vote for Obama over Clinton.
I urge the women to stay with Hillary. If the media pushing Obama and the Democratic dirty politics machine shut her out then please look closely at other options.
I won't vote for someone I do not believe in.
The Democratic party has let ME down and I think Hillary supporters need to rethink our support of the Democratic party in November.

As a CT Democrat I am soooo disappointed by this endorsement. First Lieberman loses it and becomes a first class embarrassment to the state and now Dodd. What is he thinking? I thought he was a smart man but I now have serious doubts. He's just going along with the majority to get a better place in history. In my opinion Dodd is now history himself. What has become of my state? Hillary is the only candidate worthy of any endorsement if we are to get out of the domestic and international messes we are in. While I like Obama he is not ready!!! I don't agree with you about Clinton, but we are both entitled to our opinions. I would like to stand up for Sen. Dodd and suggest that one reason he may have made the endorsement is that it appears that The Clintons are willing to destroy the party if they don't get their own way. BTW, I believe Ned Lamont endorses Obama and that The Clintons were quite happy to see Lieberman defeat Lamont by not going along with the decision of the Democratic voters of CT. It all fits together for me.

Back in 2001, after Clinton took office in the Senate and before 9/11, if you had asked me if I a) expected Hillary to run in 2008 (or 2012, I wasn't sure) and b) would enthusiastically support her candidacy, I would have said YES and YES.

A lot has happened since then. Some of it involves what Hillary did and didn't do. I've cataloged that elsewhere here. Some has to do with other, larger events.

And now, she's no longer the right candidate. She's demonstrated that she will consistently triangulate her way into bad decisions. The War, the Bush tax cuts, the strangulation of civil liberties, and so on, demand a different solution. Is Obama a perfect solution? Heck no. Is he a better option than Hillary or McCain. Absolutely. No question.

Good endorsement, especially when one thinks of the strong way Dodd was fighting the FISA bill without immunity for the telecom companies in the Senate. I think Barack will also get an endorsement soon from Russ Feingold. Another guy who fought hard on the FISA bill and has always been against the war in Iraq. Obama voted for NO immunity for the telecom companies, while McCain voted for immunity. Remember Vicki Iseman, the telecom lobbyist? Oh, Hillary didn't vote on the FISA bill, as she has LOTS of money given to her by telecom lobbyists. She and McCain also voted for the war in Iraq. Feingold will NEVER endorse someone like that.

If Feingold wanted to have an impact, he would have endorsed prior to the WI primary. He publicly stated that he voted for Obama; that's as close to an endorsement as we're gonna get out of him. My prediction: Edwards announces his endorsement tomorrow morning.

One can only hope. My respect for Edwards wanes more each day he holds off. Throughout the debates, he allied himself with Obama as change agents against Hillary's corporatist, old guard campaign. I realize Edwards should try to leverage the political capital of his endorsement for something meaningful (a plum position in the future administration?), but enough is enough. If he doesn't do it soon, Obama won't need him and he'll get (and deserve) nothing.

But he, unlike HRC, actually had experience. Of the two remaining candidates, it makes sense for him to choose the better politician.

Hillary Clinton that is who. Dodd just wanted the spotlight for a few more minutes before returning to his lonely cold shadow.

Guess he's distinguishing between experience that leads to good judgement and experience that produces and endless string of wrong-headed decisions/actions.

i finally figured why the far left members of congress are endorsing obama .......these left wing nuts can control him when and if hes elected...........kennedy, kerry dodd etc can push him into left wing ideology and call in their endorsement favors........they know they could never control HRC.......i switched to independent because the far left of the dem party will destroy the party and really put a hurting on this country

Not sure what Gore and Edwards are waiting for, but my guess is that they want to make sure the candidate they endorse is the clear winner to secure a job in the cabinet. Playing it safe instead of making a stand. Their endorsement at this time would secure Obama for sure!

They are playing political chicken. I have more respect for those who lined up with Obama earlier on because they believed in what he stands for and what he can do.

I would agree, wholeheartedly, that John Edwards is playing "political chicken," but I don't think the same can be said about Al Gore. Vice President Gore has stayed well above the fray. He knows that his endorsement will draw the alignment of all remaining (and perhaps formerly pledged) super delegates. He has no intention of sitting on a cabinet and has made no political statements other than stating that he would not make an early endorsement. He has done what all super delegates should do -- wait for the will of the people and then give the presumptive winner the prerequisite number of delegates to close out the primary race.

Lined up???

I know allot of people that lined up in history and it was rarely good.

Gore is absolutely not vying for a cabinet position. As a highly regarded senior statesman and long time Democrat, he's holding out his endorsement as the definitive "end-all" if a dispute were to arise, i.e Mrs. Clinton getting licked in OH and/or TX and refusing to bow out. I think you're spot on with Edwards though.

Gore's most valuable contribution to the party would be to act as honest broker at the convention if it gets to that. If he endorses Obama now, he will lose credibility at Denver.
