Chris Dodd Obama

UPDATE: Dodd describes his "not comfortable" discussion in which he informed Hillary about his decision:

At a Cleveland press conference with Obama, Dodd denied he was implying Sen. Hillary Clinton should drop out, but merely suggesting that both campaigns watch their tone over the next week leading up to the critical Ohio and Texas contests.

Dodd said he informed Clinton last night of his decision to endorse Obama, adding that it was "not a comfortable" discussion.

UPDATE: Dodd used his endorsement to pitch a new message for the Obama camp -- that it is time for Democrats to unite around a single candidate:

"It is now the hour to come together," he told reporters in Cleveland. "I believe the hour has come now for us to make that choice - to stand up and say we're going to get behind this candidacy."

"I don't want a campaign that is only divisive here, and there's a danger of it becoming that," he said. "Not because the candidates want that, but too often the advisors the consultants others are seeking for that divisiveness."

"After a prolonged silence through most of the primary season, Sen. Christopher J. Dodd is rejoining the presidential race on somebody else's team -- Sen. Barack Obama's."

The Connecticut senator, whose own presidential campaign failed to draw enough attention to propel him past the first contest in Iowa, is expected to announce his endorsement of Obama this morning, according to a Democratic official close to Dodd. He'll then campaign with Obama in Ohio.

Obama's campaign hopes that the March 4 primaries in Ohio, Texas, Vermont and Rhode Island will be the victory that clinches the Democratic nomination for him. When he faces Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton in another debate tonight -- the last before these pending primaries -- he'll do it with Dodd in his corner.

It's unclear what Dodd's task will be with the campaign or whether he'll be hitting those last two New England states still awaiting primaries next week. But if Obama eventually gets the nomination, Connecticut's two senators will be in opposing campaigns. Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman is one of Republican Sen. John McCain's staunchest allies.

The Washington Post's Shailagh Murray notes:

Like Sen Joseph Biden (D-Del.) and New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, Dodd has been heavily courted by both the Obama campaign and that of Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.), including numerous calls from former President Bill Clinton. But the veteran senator had been reluctant to weigh in until voters across the country, including from his home state of Connecticut (which Obama won on Super Tuesday) could weigh in.

Much more from AP:

Dodd's support, coupled with his liberal credentials, could provide a boost for Obama as major contests near in big states such as Ohio and Texas on March 4. Obama has won some key Democratic endorsements in recent weeks, including Massachusetts Sen. Edward Kennedy, a close friend of Dodd.

Obama and rival Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton had been vying for Dodd's support since he exited the presidential race after a poor showing in the Iowa caucus last month. Dodd, who won his Senate seat in 1980 and chaired the Democratic National Committee from 1995-1996, has long-standing ties to the Clintons.

Dodd is a "superdelegate," one of nearly 800 Democratic officeholders and party officials who automatically attend the national convention and can vote for whomever they choose. They have become an important force in the close race between Clinton and Obama, and both candidates are lobbying hard for their support.

Just when I thought I was beginning to understand and clarity the differences between the candidates someone else steps in and adds an element of confusion.....

I think the timing of his endorsement reflects Clinton's performance over the weekend. She is becoming very destructive and needs to be big footed off the stage. I expect to see an acceleration of super delegate endoresements as a signal to her that its time to go.

Hillary gives a speech in Rhode Island, mocking Obama with that sky is opening routine, and what happens? A senior Senator from a neigboring state endorses Obama.

Great going, Mrs. Clinton. Keep those speeches coming.

BTW, Dodd, alongwith Kennedy, Kerry and Leahy is now a cultist, driven completely by the "Messiah" message and those "meaningless" slogans.

So much for endorsements.

Who is ahead right now, with 11 straight wins?

Endorsements matter, otherwise Hillary would be turning those down, don't you think, Genius?

I think the only people stupider than that fat man running Hillary's campaign are Hillary supporters like you.

The writing was on the wall in MA but look at the impact the Kerry & Kennedy endorsements had on Super Tuesday as a whole. You can look at the national poll and see a distinct spike when the Kennedy endorsement was announced. Generally, though, I would agree that endorsements don't mean squat and this Dodd endorsement won't translate into votes.

Hey, aren't all those guys former, loser candidates. Maybe Obama should get some advice from Kerry on how to cut and run like the little -itch he is.

Anopther endorsement from the Joe Leiberman wing of the Democratic party.

Dodd takes more money from special interests than anyone on the planet, fact...

Obama is like Snajya from American Idol, he has no talent but folk just vote for him, he (Obama) is a creation of the Daley political machine from Chicago just as Sanjya was a creation of Simon from that disgusting show.

No wonder the Republicans always win: look at the idiots on the Democratic side. I know for Hillary only 2 or 3 states count. Only 10 or 12 Senators count. Unfortunately to get things do you have to work with all the state representatives and Senators

This is true for the past and is embodied in the Clinton approach, but Howard Dean and Obama are going to steal that page from the Republican book and win the election with a 50 State Strategy.

And don't forget, Dodd is a communist and a cultis, I'm sure of that. Find out if he cheats on his wife. There has to be a reason like that. Otherwise, how could he possibly endorse Obama.

The suggestion that Dodd is a Leiberman would be laughable if it weren't so reprehensible.

Willingness to thus slander an exemplary liberal (Dodd) in an indirect effort to support a questionable one (Clinton, the flag-burning ban promoter) is representative of the destructiveness of the scorched earth quality of Clinton's campaign.

For the record, aside from their common CT origins, Leiberman and Dodd share almost NOTHING in terms of policy positions or voting behavior since Leiberman went AWOL from the Dem Party after 2000.

Interestingly enough, Hillary Clinton's voting record, particularly on the Iraq War, and her unwillingness to admit her mistake on her votes for that War, are as close to Leiberman's record as any Dem in the Senate.

Also interesting, Clinton supported Leiberman when he "dissed" the Dem Party, which had nominated Ned Lamont. Without her support, we very well might have had Lamont instead of Leiberman. How damaging was that single act of Clinton's to the Senate and the Party?

Hmmm.

During all the superdelegate hand-wringing, I was always convinced of two things: 1) If the superdelegates were sold on Clinton, they'd have been in her camp from the very beginnning; and 2) If they were still in play, indicating they weren't so sure Hillary was the best choice, they'd start to move to Obama if he got enough momentum going.

Unless Hillary really blows Obama out in both Ohio and Texas - 15+ point wins in both states - there will be more and more superdelegates going to Obama. The voters really will decide the race.

Dodd's endorsement is good for helping with TX and Ohio, but I think his greater value is in influencing the way superdelegates vote in the convention. We all know Hillary expects to take the battle all the way to Denver.

Yeah, a true man of courage would act like a lemming and follow the lead of a bunch of anonymous bloggers with silly names like teahead. Edwards gave a principled reason why he wasn't likely to endorse during the primaries. But you'd rather assume the worst and name-call. Sad.

It looks like the Democrats are hell bent on trying the Bush experiment for themselves just to see if they can get it right. I wish you luck, as for me if Obama is the nominee I will vote McCain, I have already lived through 8 years of an inexperience experiment.

What a dumbfu*k trying to compare Bush to Obama.

And who was the idiot Senator who's still running who voted for his Iraq War?

Yeah, Clinton. She is more like Bush in every respect.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:40 AM on 02/26/2008

And McCain. He voted to invade Iraq too. He demonstrated just as bad judgment as Hillary did and now wants to stay there for 100 years (expending our national treasure in the process). Just so long as we spend money on killing and maiming Americans and others, McCain will always vote for governement expenditures, even if it bankrupts us and is against US interests. When it comes to voting for health care for Americans, McCain is a "budget hawk".

There's such a HUGE difference between Obama and Bush... Bush has had a history of failure running campaigns, businesses, etc. He's had little to no success managing anything.

Obama, even by virtue of running a masterful campaign against and inevitable nominee, has shown that his years of experience as an organizer, state legislator, and U.S. Senator, places him a FAR better position to hold the office.

The same people who decry Obama's lack of experience (and refuse to acknowledge his legislative record) still tout Bill Clinton's record, despite HIS lack of experience.

Obama has a stronger academic record than Bush, as well.

Bush's campaign actually was successful, but not because he ran it. It was run for him by his puppet master Karl Rove. Now if you want to talk about things that Bush actually did run....Business's, Football teams and countries, not so much a success.

The bigger question than which Hillary will show up tonight is the concern, if she should ever manage to fight her way out of this one, is which Hillary shows up at the White House? How can world leaders know who to trust, the way she switches tactics and opinions?

Especially when she has to step out of the room to find her voice! Or, let's see, would it be the voice(s) of her campaign staff or advisors - especially is it all goes wrong? Really worrisome to think of this schizophrenic behavior in a critical situation.

What's going to be nice is that, with the tactics they used in this campaign, the Clintons will practically disappear once Obama is in the White House. They've guaranteed themselves a place in obscurity. I wish I could see their faces when they try and get attention and nobody cares.

The mismanaged and truly deranged Clinton campaign has pushed the hand of super delegates like Dodd to come out and endorse Obama.

She has no one to blame but herself. If she would have stayed sane and reasonable democratic party leaders would have held back and enjoyed a lively campaign that focused media attention on the energized Dem Party.

But oh no. In pure trailer trash Clinton fashion, they would rather indulge in their selfish and destructive behavior than do the right thing. Like be normal.

Her out of control antics of this last week end have sealed the deal. The party leadership will not go down with the Clinton ship, they will not allow he Clintons to ruin the party's chances this time around.

Its time Dodd and all the rest step in and shut down the embarrassing and insane Clinton campaign. She is not the boss of the party, she is barely the boss of herself. Enough is enough.

Let the endorsements flow and lets get this creepy and humiliating Clinton show closed down.

I support Obama and I'm glad Dodd endorsed him. But overall, in our rich campaign history, this primary has been pretty civil-- Bill has put his foot in his mouth a couple of times, but not until this weekend did I think Hillary really lost it, and I think it's due to frustration. The Clintons never dreamed they could be outmaneuvered, out-financed and out-organized by another Democrat. And, yes: even though it sounds desperate at this juncture, Hillary is right that Obama has been far better treated by the press. (Given their recent history of fawning over McCain and p*ssing all over Dems in general elections, we can only hope it continues, but I'm worried.)

In any event, describing Hillary and her campaign as "trailer trash" and "creepy and humiliating" say much more about the speaker/writer than they do about the target. It's certainly nothing you'll hear out of Obama, which is one reason I like him.

It is what it it. Its not me out there trying, out of ego maniacal selfishness to discredit and destroy the party.

They did it before and they will do it again. The destroyed the party in the 90s and ensured 8 years of Bush. You may think this is fine,I don't. Too much at stake.

Yes, her insane behavior is Jerry Springer trailer trash. Its embarrassing for her and for all of us.

Time to get a little self respect.

since Dodd was the one who stood up for the Ameican people against the FISA bill, maybe the fact that Clinton didn't show up to vote, when Obama did, influenced his decision.
Remember that Dodd left the campaign trail to fight against FISA, thats when a made a donation to his campaign.
