The Clinton campaign is fighting back against a Sunday New York Times report by Patrick Healy that suggests her campaign is not only deteriorating, but that she is foreshadowing her exit through valedictory statements.

Armed with hundreds of signatures from campaign staffers and volunteers, the campaign attempted to respond with a letter to the editor in the Times, but says it was rejected on the grounds that they hold "valuable space" for "ordinary readers." A Clinton aide pointed out that "This letter is a mere 218 words, and signed by 503 people - thirty three times as many people as the story cites, and all of them by name." Clinton staffers and volunteers also submitted individual letters, which the Times has yet to accept.

Below is a copy of the letter and the list of signatures.

(Update: NYT editorial page editor Andy Rosenthal responds, saying he didn't run the letter because it was a thinly disguised "press release." Citing the letter below, TPM's Greg Sargent talks to a Clinton insider about the campaign's apparent new strategy of running against the media.)

To the Editor,

In regards to Patrick Healy's story on Sun, Feb 24, 2008, "Somber Clinton Soldiers On as the Horizon Darkens"

The unnamed advisers and aides the story relies on speak for nobody but themselves.

The rest of us - thousands of her supporters, friends, members of her staff and volunteers - are working tirelessly each and every day and night, because we believe in Hillary. We believe she will win the nomination. We believe she will win in November. And we know she will make the best President of the United States.

Hillary is a voice for countless Americans across the country who need a champion, a problem solver, a president. That's what she's done her whole life. That's what inspires us. Those of us who have had the honor of working for Hillary Clinton - as First Lady, as Senator, and as a candidate for the Presidency - are awed by her passion and her service. We all strive to live up to her example, to do our best every day to serve this nation.

Millions of Americans across the country have already cast their votes and made it clear that they want Hillary Clinton as their president. Millions more have yet to have their chance. These are the opinions and voices that matter.

Signed,

Hillary Clinton staff & volunteers (Listed Alphabetically)

And where is Mark Penn's name?

Why is it always Karl Rove or the media? Didn't Senator Clinton go to Kindergarten where we learn to play by the rules and not to blame somebody else when we lose?

This letter from staffers and volunteers is really a beautiful testimonial for a woman who's given her life for this country. When did YOU do for your country today?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:22 AM on 03/01/2008

I don't think she has "given her life for her country," (since she is still alive) but I think a lot of men and women whom she sent to war in Iraq have.

If Hillary was a man she wouldn't be having these issues. He would be applauded for defending himself and fighting to win. When a woman does it.....we get childish responses regarding Kindergarten.

I for one am thankful to the staffers and volunteers for standing up for someone they believe in.

Go Hillary!!! Go Hillary Volunteers!! Go Hillary Staffers!! Go Bill!!!! Go Chelsea!!! Go to all the courageous superdelegates who refuse to be bullied and are standing their ground!!

It is times like these when we see what we are truly made of.

universala, Clinton is not "defending" herself, she is actively attacking Obama. There is a difference. By her own admission they are throwing the kitchen sink at him in their desperate attempt to hang on to this campaign.

People aren't coming down on Clinton because she is a woman, they are coming down on her because they, we, are sick of the dirty tricks, the mud slinging, and the underhanded tactics. It all gets us no where, it only aids McCain and the GOP.

I can't speak for everyone else. For me, I don't care if you're a man or a woman when it comes to not doing the right thing. Not being able to play by the rules and blaming everyone else for our own mistakes is just as bad for a man as for a woman. One of these days Clinton supporters will understand it isn't a female thing. It's a personal thing. Their is nothing childish about playing by the rules and taking personal responsibility. We teach those lessons in kindergarten because we expect adults to follow these simple principles. Trying to change the rules to seat delegates is cheating. Trying to blame the media for her losing campaign is called being a poor sport. It is what it is.

Karl Rove's plan is that some Republicans vote for Obama in the primaries and then vote Republican in November. That is the only way they can stop Hillary Clinton!

Along with Nader running they beat Hillary.

A lot of Republican men like voting for Obama because they get to vote against Hillary Clinton twice.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:55 AM on 02/29/2008

KKKarl Rove is done, first of all. Second, I would ask why all the GOP talking heads are pushing for Hillary? Because Hillary is the last great hope for the GOP to shore up their support with their base. Like a typical Hillary supporter, you fail to give credit where credit is due. Even with GOP pushing Hillary, many republicans are voting for Obama. It has nothing to do with strategy, but everything to do with even them being aware we need some serious change in the people's house.

It's quite sad to see Clinton blaming the media for bias. I would say they are biased, as we all know. But even now, they are still biased in favor of Clinton. There seems to be a fear of the Clintons in the press. No matter what you read or watch from the media, nobody is counting out Clinton. They say over and over that Clinton is still in the race. She still has a chance. This would never happen if Barack Obama had lost 11 in a row. They would be asking him why he was still in the race. Now, I agree that not all of the media or press has been great. But I'm pretty sure that is to be expected when you lose state after state. Barack's campaign really deserves credit for overcoming the inevitability coronation the media handed Clinton early on. Of course, Clinton deserves credit for the blunders, mistakes and mismanagement that helped Barack, as well. The only people in the race that should be crying about media bias are Edwards and Kucinich. But Hillary? Give me a break!

Have fun supporting McCain in the general. Should be fun to watch him squirm on stage next to Obama while he tries to defend an illegal war, illegal wiretapping, illegal rendition program, illegal torture, Guantanamo and the fake show trials, the largest deficit in history and a myriad of other illegal activities.

Months ago, Obama's campaign requested and was given an interview with the NY Times. I will leave those interested to look up the feature article that resulted. But at the time, as a John Edwards supporter, I was blown away. As is well known, the Times gave around one third the coverage to Edwards that they gave to Hillary and that they gave to Obama (3:1 on each not together). And all Obama's campaign had to do was make a call?

I voted for Edwards in the primary and am proud of it. But, I think there is an arrogance at the Times that Hillary's campaign is now feeling and support her or not, we all should be concerned. This is a newspaper that reaches into huge numbers of households in this country. Its silence (or enmity) toward candidates is disproportional in its impact. The election editor is problematical in his responses for even-handedness or just plain fairness. So, even if you are an Obama supporter, you should wonder about Andy Rosenthal's thinly veiled contempt for our political process and the role of the free press in allowing an individual or his/her supporters to respond.

I will give you credit that John Edwards got the shaft by the media. I personally have a feeling that had something to do with his anti-corporate stance. However, it was Obama that was generating the excitement so it is natural he got good coverage. As far as Hillary goes, she couldn't have asked for better press for months and months. It wasn't until she started losing state after state the media coverage changed for her. Losing tends to do that to a candidate, and has nothing to do with media bias.

Read this and you will find as to why nafta isn't bad after all. Just needs a few changes.
So that state like Ohio does not suffer.

Hillary is now getting the contributions. I hope that those contributing will also come forward and
volunteer with her campaign , trying to get her message across and helping those voters who need a ride to the polling booth.

Canada PM Says Nafta "Solid" Deal,Doubts It Will Be Reopened

15:00 EST Thursday, February 28, 2008

OTTAWA (Dow Jones)--Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper Thursday said Nafta is a "solid agreement" and he doubts a future U.S. President would want to reopen the deal.
But if that were to happen, then Canada would also have some matters of its own to raise, Harper said in Parliament.
U.S. Democratic Party candidates Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama said this week that if they become president, they would pull out of the North American Free Trade Agreement if it's not renegotiated.
"I think the Nafta agreement is a solid agreement for both of our countries," Harper said during Question Period in the House of Commons.
"I would caution about jumping to a conclusion about what a future (U.S.) president may do. If a future president actually did want to open up Nafta, Mr. Speaker, which I highly doubt, then Canada would obviously have some things we would want to discuss as well," he added.

I agree with your entire post. Except this: "Hillary is now getting the contributions. I hope that those contributing will also come forward and
volunteer with her campaign , trying to get her message across and helping those voters who need a ride to the polling booth."
Hillary is still getting LESS contributions, less volunteers and getting her message(s) out less. That may have something to do with losing. I am all for people getting rides to the polls to be able to vote, though.

Hillary is getting a tremendous amount of contributions per day. Please do not listen to the ignoramus who is responding to you and many others by the name westseattle. He is just a grotesque troll who is being paid- yes paid because everyone knows Obama supporters, superdelegates and those endorsing him are all being paid to do so because they lack integrity and depth, as opposed to Clinton supporters who volunteer tirelessly because they sincerely believe in her and her ability to not only unite this country, but help our country heal its relationships with nations, we have fallen out of favor with. The whole point of the Obama campaign is simple. They seek to thwart any progress Hillary Clinton' s campaign makes toward not only fundraising but in advertising as well. This is a well documented fact disseminated by the Wall Street Journal this week and entitled: Clinton Group Ads Cause Discord. Also, read Obama' s Financial Ploy and watch CBS evening news for today 2/28/08, where they make Obama's exploits seem much worse than Whitewater could ever hope to be. Didi47 from Canada pointed out something very interesting below as well which all Clinton and McCain supporters should read regarding Obama changing his stance with respect to NAFTA and our Canadian neighbors. But Obama supporters are seeking to suppress any negative information directed at their candidate,at all costs(Larry Sinclair go to youtube). It makes for a fun watch and is entirely plausible, given his highly liberal views on drugs and just about everything, except women's rights. To our Canadian neighbors I reassure you Clinton supporters not only spend time posting to rectify erroneous and viscious information given to readers, but we consistently contribute and volunteer in various capacities seeking donations, attending rallies and making phone calls to all our friends in Texas, Ohio, Pennsylvania etc.. We won't let other Clinton supporters down and we will especially not let our candidate, Senator Hillary Clinton down. We will not allow her to be destroyed by Obama's camp, NOT NOW! NOT EVER!! If you wish to volunteer sign up at her website: Hillary Clinton.com and you might be able to make calls on her behalf . You have nothing to lose, but everything to gain by supporting Hillary Clinton for President. Canadians We Love You!

You obviously don't know what you're talking about. I get paid by nobody. I am here because I believe in Barack Obama and the change he'll bring to the country. News flash for you, we ARE trying to beat Clinton in fundraising and advertising. That's what you do in elections. Also, I don't believe Clinton has the ability to bring people together. She divides them up into groups that end up hating each other, just like the democratic party right now that your post is such a great example of. If she were to win the primary, we sould see the country just as divided and full of hate. I really don't see how that would be good for us.
I hope you enjoyed the Canadians saying they NEVER received a call from Obama like you claim. The erroneus report came out and the Clintonistas jumped all over it, slamming Obama. Then the report was proven false. Did Clinton apologize? Of course not! They don't care if they tear somebody down for personal gain even if it's false. But really, good luck supporting Hillary. She is a great woman and I'll wish her luck in the future.

Melann830, yes, 35 million dollars is a lot of money to raise--50 million is more.

Part of the problem with Hillary supporters like you is that you are thinking in a cynical and totally self-absorbed way that Obama supporters are really just out to get Clinton. You manage to, somehow, make this election out to be all about you and your candidate, instead of being about what is best for our country.

People know that Clinton's time has come and gone. She, along with the incompetant people she hired, has run her campaign into the ground. She took her position as the inevitable nominee and squandered it. She has never been able to find her focus, she has never been able to come up with a central theme for her campaign. She has managed to take the money that people have donated to her and squandered it--she is in debt up to her ears, and there are people who still have not been paid by her campaign.

As opposed to Obama, who built a campaign from the gorund up and has managed it flawlessly. He has a central theme, he sticks to it, he is always on message. This shows consistency and self-confidence. And Obama's campaign, in contrast, has very little debt. You don't hear him going off on "me, me, me" tangents, he is always clear that this isn't about him but about "us."

You know that you are telling lies when you say that his supporters are all being paid to support him. Why do you think that your candidate isn't strong enough to stand on her platform and her record? Why do you feel you have to lie for her and tear other people down? I certainly don't need to tear Clinton supporters down, I respect your right to support her and I'm sure you have thought this decision out and believe it is the best one. What I question and take issue with is your continuous spouting of hate and lies. As Clinton said, "shame on you."

Yo, Nazirmo, it's not Canada that's the problem with NAFTA - it's Mexico.

Canada has a similar economy - better health benefits and a democratic government - kind of like what we used to have in this country.

Mexico is a third world country where workers in American plants make 5-10 dollars a DAY - for all those flat earth a**holes (are you listening, Tom Friedman?) who say we should compete on a worldwide basis - just how are you going to compete and survive on 5-10 dollars a day?

Harper is just Bush-lite - he is protecting NAFTA because it is good for business and having the US between Mexico and Canada protects the Canadian economy from some of the negative effects of NAFTA.

Remember goofy old Ross Perot - well, he was right about NAFTA - that sucking sound you hear is the sound of American jobs being sucked out of this country.

For the record, Harper should mind his own damn business or we might just invade them, again.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:00 AM on 02/29/2008

I agree with everything in your post. Except the threat to invade Canada. If we put labor and environmental standards on NAFTA, perhaps people in Mexico would make more than 5 - 10 dollars a day. But calling them a third world country probably isn't going to help any. We aren't better than everyone else. We're the same with the same hopes and aspirations as they are.

The only reason why the primary is close, is Hillary was the darling of the press for a couple of years leading up to the primary. Through Super-Tuesday, she could do no wrong. When Obama and Clinton split through Super-Tuesday, the media was forced to take a second look at Obama. The numbers Obama faced in each state were staggering. And yet, he was able to chip away and finally overtake her lead in each state. With each win, more of the media has come to his side as a result of his winning. Now that she has lost 11 in a row, who in their right mind who put their professional career on the line for her, except hinnis of course?

There are three reasons that Obama is winning the primaries: money, media, and proportional representation delegate splits. Barack has had a money advantage since - forever - that permitted him to compete strongly in every single state primary and caucus down to and including Samoa. He has been strongly supported by MSM ever since he took the poll lead before Iowa. He has steadily accumulated delegates in every primary and caucus - even in big states won by Clinton on Super Tuesday - which a Republican candidate could not have done in their winner-take-all system. If you can afford to put money into every state, which Clinton and the rest could not, and take home delegates from every election, and the press is rooting for you every step of the way, you can afford to lose big blue states and still win the nomination. How this will work out for the Democrats in the GE is yet TBD.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:38 AM on 02/29/2008

He has the money advantage because he has run a better campaign. Clinton had the advantage through Super-Tuesday. I'll point out that she won American Samoa, not Barack. When you run a great campaign and bring in so many new people to the process, the media will undoubtedly be on your side. As far as California, New York and other big states, Clinton won because of their strong ties to the Democratic party leadership, which was on Clinton's side for the majority of the race. Only now with Barack winning like he is has that started to change. That's why even now Clinton holds a lead with super delegates. But, Obama will win those big blue states in the general against McCain, and as he has shown, will take some of the smaller red states that Hillary had no chance with. The democratic coalition in the general will be larger than it's been in generations.

Likewise, Taylor Marsh has no credibility whatsoever. She is a confirmed GOP opposition research hack, trafficking in trumped-up charges and conjecture.

If you are so worked up about candidates saying one thing & doing another, how about Hillary saying how she is such a fighter for women & children, when years ago she tried to win acquittal for an (alleged) rapist by going after the 12 year old victim's credibility? Kinda odd, huh?

And, regarding video segments of Obama lying or misleading, please direct any arguments to him, personally.

soylentgreenleftovers: It appears that you did take the time to peruse just the first article that I posted. You know, the one where Obama turns on his friend and mentor, Alice Palmer, and has her disqualified to run for the office he was seeking (along with pretty much every other Democratic candidate on the ballot at the time). Maybe such tactics are just fine with you, but I consider them to be politics as usual; not the "change" about which Obama speaks. By the way, did you see the video of Obama complimenting Bush on his appointment of Rumsfeld and the rest of his cabinet members? It's kind of funny to look back on such things.

For a supposed researcher, you sure use youtube a lot. I don't need Taylor Marsh, Hillary Clinton or you to tell me what to think about Senator Obama. Nice try though. So, which Hillary Clinton do you believe?

OK, since this isn't as obvious as it should be, let me help. If you lose 11 in a row, you can't expect good press coverage. The media was all for Hillary when she was up. I didn't hear her complain about Edwards getting the shaft by the media when she was up. Now that she is on a free fall, it's all of a sudden a major issue. It couldn't have anything to do with her losing over and over again, could it? Of course not. The media just decided they hate Clinton now. That has to be it.

WTF? I saw "Phil Spector" on the list! Isn't he a little creepy to have around?

Idiot, you mean two people in the world can't share a common name. Like Hussein. That is fucking more creepy than Spector could ever be!!

Two things, I think...

1. The report about the Obama camp calling the Canadian PM on NAFTA. Poppycock. Anyone in their proper mind would not do so without opening themselves up to the ridicule seen here and probably other blogs and letters to the editor. It would be political suicide. If, however, the Obama camp did make that call, then it was a superb blunder that they will have to overcome very quickly and then put it behind them.

2. Hillary camp blaming others for any potential downfall. The Clinton campaign has had its share of counting the chickens before they're hatched. Sure, many people jump on-board a campaign for the hope that they will ride it out to the White House. That's cool & I've no problem with people aspiring to a higher level in life. However, when you focus so much on that or the premise that you want to win at any cost, then you sacrifice a lot. Spending your money so quickly in the primary season in the attempt to win on Super Tuesday on Feb 5 is very foolish and could have cost Clinton the nomination. Bravado will not win it for anyone. Snide remarks (by whichever side began them) only gives you a temporary advantage and eliminating them at the opportune time will benefit you and not your opponent. Hillary waited too long to stop the "blood-letting". She even attempted it on the debate this week and was booed by the audience for her attempt.

So, when all is said and done... who will you vote for in November? As a Democrat, I cannot vote for McCain... it is against my "religion", so to speak. And, Ralphie is not a serious anything, much less a candidate for President. So, I will vote for either of the two highly respected and qualified (YES, qualified!!) candidates in the Democratic race. Either will make an exceptional President. Who do I want to win the nomination? Obama, as he is more of a breath of fresh air and charismatic as a leader. Will I be saddened if Obama loses? Not really.

I will want to be present at the inauguration in January, 2009 to celebrate the Democratic win.

I'm a lifelong Democrat and sincerely hope that Hillary wins the nomination. If she does not, however, I, like every other Democrat I've spoken to, will be voting for McCain. I know much too much about Obama, his record and his background to ever vote for a man like him.

Well then, that would make you a Republican, not a Democrat.

Fraid that the story is true. The reporter reaffirmed the source, and it wasn't anonymous.

So yes, Obama did lie again at the debate. He does that.

Wow is right -- a lot of extremists here in this thread... If this kind of infighting continues for another several months, there won't be either energy or a Democratic candidate left for the general election.
Here's a respectful petition asking Senator Clinton to withdraw now.
http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/clintonwithdrawnow/
"Dear Senator Hilary Clinton,
This petition respectfully and humbly requests that you make what may be the hardest decision of your public life and withdraw from the 2008 presidential contest. Your service to this country, passion about the issues and qualifications to be President are recognized by any fair-minded observer.

I humbly request that you take the time to get to know the real Obama. Believe me, you won't like what you see.

hinnis, how is it that you know so much about Obama that no one else knows? In response to transformer08 above, the infighting mentioned is the Clinton way of politics. Divide people in groups, and attack the other side at all cost. The Democrats are divided now, and if Hillary wins the nominee, the country will be just as divided. That's great, just what we need right now. Can't win on character or class, so just divide and conquer. Great.

Ok staffers...is any of this true?

If Hillary Clinton wins in 2008 And Bill Clinton is 'appointed' to fill her Senate Seat And either of them live to retire... (together or alone)

they would get...two US Presidential retirement checks, two US Senate retirement checks, and A retirement check from the State of Arkansas .

About the only thing they MIGHT NOT get is... A Social Security Check....

But I wouldn't bet on it.... I understand ole Bill has earned $40,000,000 in the past six years. What a guy! AND THE REST OF THE STORY...

Hillary Clinton, as a New York State Senator, comes under the 'Congressional Retirement and Staffing Plan,' which means that even if she never gets re-elected, She STILL receives her Congressional salary until she dies. (Would it not be nice if all Americans Were pension eligible after only 4 years?)

If Bill outlives her, He then inherits HER salary until HE dies.

He is already getting his Presidential salary until he dies.

If Hillary outlives Bill, She also gets HIS salary until she dies. Guess who pays for that?

It's common knowledge that in order for Hillary To establish NY residency, They purchased a million dollar-plus house In upscale Chappaqu, New York. Makes sense! They are entitled to Secret Service protection for life.

Here is where it becomes even more interesting. Their mortgage payments hover at around $10,000 per month.

BUT, an extra residence 'had' to be built within the acreage to house The Secret Service agents.

The Clintons' charge The Federal government $10,000 monthly rent for the use of that extra residence, which is about equal to their mortgage payment.

This means that we taxpayers, are paying for the Clintons' salaries, mortgage, transportation, and security, as well as the salaries for their 12 person staff -- and, it is all perfectly legal!

Anyone who wants to know just how honest Obama is, look at this news report from Canadian television. By the way, it's pathetic that we Americans have to rely on foreign news sources for the truth about our own campaigns.
