The Clinton campaign is fighting back against a Sunday New York Times report by Patrick Healy that suggests her campaign is not only deteriorating, but that she is foreshadowing her exit through valedictory statements.

Armed with hundreds of signatures from campaign staffers and volunteers, the campaign attempted to respond with a letter to the editor in the Times, but says it was rejected on the grounds that they hold "valuable space" for "ordinary readers." A Clinton aide pointed out that "This letter is a mere 218 words, and signed by 503 people - thirty three times as many people as the story cites, and all of them by name." Clinton staffers and volunteers also submitted individual letters, which the Times has yet to accept.

Below is a copy of the letter and the list of signatures.

(Update: NYT editorial page editor Andy Rosenthal responds, saying he didn't run the letter because it was a thinly disguised "press release." Citing the letter below, TPM's Greg Sargent talks to a Clinton insider about the campaign's apparent new strategy of running against the media.)

To the Editor,

In regards to Patrick Healy's story on Sun, Feb 24, 2008, "Somber Clinton Soldiers On as the Horizon Darkens"

The unnamed advisers and aides the story relies on speak for nobody but themselves.

The rest of us - thousands of her supporters, friends, members of her staff and volunteers - are working tirelessly each and every day and night, because we believe in Hillary. We believe she will win the nomination. We believe she will win in November. And we know she will make the best President of the United States.

Hillary is a voice for countless Americans across the country who need a champion, a problem solver, a president. That's what she's done her whole life. That's what inspires us. Those of us who have had the honor of working for Hillary Clinton - as First Lady, as Senator, and as a candidate for the Presidency - are awed by her passion and her service. We all strive to live up to her example, to do our best every day to serve this nation.

Millions of Americans across the country have already cast their votes and made it clear that they want Hillary Clinton as their president. Millions more have yet to have their chance. These are the opinions and voices that matter.

Signed,

Hillary Clinton staff & volunteers (Listed Alphabetically)

www.BLACKS4BARACK.org launches:

The HILLARY "STEP DOWN WITH GRACE" CAMPAIGN

Contact the DNC to let Howard Dean know that we feel that Hillary should step down in a respectful manner since she is obvously not going to win the nomination. This would be the right gesture for her political future as well as the right gesture for the Democratic Party. Just visit: 'STEP DOWN WITH GRACE' Campaign at http://www.Blacks4Barack.org....then respectfully request the DNC to ask her to step-down. Then it will be time to concentrate on the Re-Birth Of America....BARACK OBAMA !

Hello "blacks4barack": Have you ever stopped to thing that maybe us "whites4Hillary" may want her to keep fighting for the sake of this country. By the way, as far as I know, there is no such organization as "whites4Hillary", and there shouldn't be.

This group has been pushing this nonsense since the first Iowa caucus. Why does anyone still listen to them?? By the way blacks4barack you are losing the women for hillary vote in droves. That is over half the democratic and national electorate. Maybe the 10 to 15 percent national percentage that is the black vote, minus the 20 percent in that of black voters for Hillary, and a few million college students and Kennedy liberals, plus the dozen or so MSM talking heads you have on the payroll, can elect your man in a primary election. You will lose all the independents and republicans that voted dem but won't in the general. That won't get him in for the national. It would be a first if it did. Wake up, the national numbers don't add up in your favor.

DID YOU FORGET ABOUT SOME THE POSITIVE IMPACTS OF THE CIVIL WAR. ALSO, CLINTON IS A PRIZE FIGHTER AND NO ONE IS GIVING OBAMA A FREE RIDE FOR THE HIGHEST ELECTED SEAT IN THE GOVT. GROW UP. SHE DOESN'T HAVE TO STEP DOWN BECAUSE THE BLACKS FOR OBAMA SAY SO . I THINK THE FACT THAT THIS ORG. EXISTS SPEAKS VOLUMES FOR THE AMOUNT OF LOW SELF-ESTEEM YOU HAVE WITH REGARD TO YOUR RACE AND MERE EXISTENCE IN THIS COUNTRY. YOU HAVEN'T LEARNED TO ASSIMILATE YET IN SOCIETY AND YOU BLAME ALL OF US. SORRY, GET A LIFE AND GROW UP. I WATCH THE PROGRAMMING GEARED TOWARD BLACK PEOPLE AND WHILE SOME OF IT IS OKAY, SOME IS ACTUALLY DOWN RIGHT PATHETIC. I HAVE ACTUALLY HEARD BLACKS ON TVONE'S MICHAEL BAISDEN AFTER DARK CLAIM THAT THE WORSE THING THAT BLACKS DID WAS TEACH WHITES TO DO WHAT BLACKS DO. NOW THEY ARE TAKING ALL OF OUR JOBS. MY GOD, WHAT A HATE MONGER AND A RACIST. HE SHOULD BE HAPPY THAT WE ARE INTERESTED IN THEIR CULTURE SO MUCH AS TO EMBRACE IT, NOT TOLERATE, BUT EMBRACE IT AS IF IT WERE NATURAL TO US. WOULD YOU ALL PREFER THAT WE DID NOT SEEK TO EMBRACE YOU AT ALL? HOW SAD THAT AFTER ALL THE EFFORTS SET FORTH BEFORE OBAMA WAS EVEN OLD ENOUGH TO VOTE, PEOPLE STILL THINK THAT WHITES HATE BLACKS AND THAT WE DON'T ACCEPT YOU. SHAME ON YOU FOR CREATING THIS WEBSITE.

Right, because John McCain has absolutely nothing to complain about from Fox News.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:23 AM on 02/28/2008

The only one who has a right to complain about bad media treatment is John Edwards.

If Barack Obama gone into Super Tuesday behind and then lost the overall vote, and THEN lost 11 primaries in a row do you think for a minute that the press would still consider him a viable candidate?

Hillary Clinton is all but mathematically eliminated no matter WHAT happens on Mar. 4th. A fair press would be treating her the same way they're treating Mike Huckabee.

Headlined on Canada's National News Station this evening: Barrack Obama lied to the American people during last nights debate. Obama said he would rescind and/or cancel NAFTA; and then had his representative contact the Canadian government today - to let Canada know - his statement would exempt Canada. Again it headlined the news.. Then to top it off Obama's people called in Hillary's name saying the same thing. Hillary has given Canada all right's to release the person's identity because No one from Hillary's camp called.

This is the REAL Obama. He's telling American's anything they want to hear and already reassuring Canada that NAFTA is safe! Go to CTV National News ... for a replay and hear it and see it for yourself!

I'm a Canadian and am appalled that the American news has not mentioned one word about his deceit to the American public.

What is going on??

Except that the Canadian government and its embassy in Washington DC denied that the story was true - as in NEVER happened. Somebody at CTV or elsewhere made it up.

Why don't you get caught up on your reading instead of getting caught up in the Clinton noise machine.

By the way, did Senator Clinton ever explain why Bill Clinton pardoned those Puerto Rican terrorists that had not even applied for a presidential pardon? Face it, Hillary has more baggage than the belly of a 747.

It is so apparent that the media wants to be a "king" maker in this election even though millions of Americans are choosing Hillary as their candidate. We always have to remember that these are the same guys who just loved GW over that boring old John Kerry. Look what that got us....trillions in debt and thousands dead.

The NY Times recently hired GOP cronies as columnists, attacked Hillary's campaign which they endorsed, and ran an anti-McCain story with no credible, identifiable sources. Has Rupert Murdoch put electric kool-aid in their water coolers to target them as his next purchase?

Who was it the New York Times endorsed back in January? Oh yeah, that's right... Hillary Clinton. So were they playing "king maker" back then when Mrs. Clinton was still on top?

To hear you tell it, the NYT is now reversing themselves and working to tear down the castle walls. Oops, wait a minute... the walls are tumbling down all by themselves.

How is it that Clinton supporters expect the media to succumb to it's demands? So, if I write a letter to the Times and demand that they publish it, they should? That is a very scary train of thought. But it is so telling on many levels of Clinton. So similar to Bush's "your either with us or against us" stance. So, all this supposed "media bias" is cover for the anger that the media doesn't bend to the will of the Clintons? OK, I got it now.

Hillary voted to go to war and so did a lot of others. There was a big push after all the deaths from 9/11. The problem here, is that she, along with many others, was told that we were doing that for that reason. When it was evident that was not the case, she fought that.
She also made sure those who were left fighting would have the equipment needed to do so, and not have to die without.

As far as the opinion for some of these writers, they are going for what people want to read. Women or Men, either way. They are just trying to be readable and sound good.

Hillary had made some personal choices regarding her marriage. That's not easy to do while being under public scrutiy. I just bet most of you would not have been able to do so with dignity as she did.

She is quite capable of doing what we need for America right now. She has been a real part of the processes. She has seen and she knows. Really knows. Battle scars only made her stronger. She will not waiver so easily. That is known. That fact that some of you pick that apart shows you just aren't capable of seeing the forest through the trees right now.

I don't really have a dog in this fight as a republican but it seems obvious that Barack gets a pass more than Hillary. She has baggage but that baggage is also called experience. We learn from failures as much or more than from successes. Barack or Hillary would probably make good presidents [I'm voting for McCain] but it is obvious that, whether they know it or not, Barack is better for marketing in the MSM than hillary. It's all about money somewhere.

What's despicable is that the media thinks we are all as dumb as they are, and can't see what is going on. The media in general, and Newsweek/NBC/MSNBC/Huffpo/CNN, have all been against Hillary since Iowa. And anyone who says that is just a "conspiracy theory"...is either stupid, or full of shit.

NBC and Huffpo are good examples. For every 1 slightly negative article on Obama, there are 10 higly negative ones on Hillary. Every primary that Obama has won, has gotten tons of coverage, when Hillary wins priamries they don't count becuase they are "Close", or they had "early voting", or they aren't even mentioned, like the fact she won New Mexico.

Now the latest thing is that Hilalry may well sweep TX, OH and RI...but it won't matter, becuase now suddenly winning isn't enough...she now has to win by a ceratin amount for it to count. Obama on the other hand can win by 1 point (like in Missouri), and that counts just fine.

Yesterday there was an article by that "Hack Obama humper" Jonathon "Where is my hair" Alter, telling Hillary to just drop out now, even though she is ahaead in TX, OH, RI and PA. What a bunch of shit. Apparently according to Jon-boy, TX, OH and RI, shouldn't count or be heard. And Huffpo is so pro Obama that Arianna might as well just have the decency to admit it.

The funny part is going to be when Hillary sweeps next week, and Huffpo/NBC/Newsweek and the rest are left looking as pathetic as they did after NH:)

What? Obama needs another pillow? Does anyone need that many pillows? Hillary does have battle scars from witch hunts, but those scars have only made her stronger. I can't get through Obama's smooth sayer talk. I want change done from the start. Hillary can and will do that, not Obama.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:55 AM on 02/27/2008

First of all, the victim card is really telling. One of the divisional tactics used by Clintons to garner more support. If Hillary was to win the white house, we would see the country fracture like the Democratic party is right now. She would have her base of fervant supporters who would be told that the other side is treating her unfairly and must be fought. That is why she has scars, because she fights with people that disagree with her. As kindergartenish as that sounds, it is quite common in politics. Barack Obama's main difference is that he wants to work with people that disagree with him instead of fighting them. Not only can you get more done with that approach, but you also allow the nation to heal some of it's wounds. While Bush and Clinton like to pour salt in the wound in order to suit their agenda, Obama sees the big picture that wounds prevent our country from reaching for greatness. This is why Obama is running away with the nomination. It's not his smooth talk or how many pillows he's sitting on. So keep playing the victim card, Hillary supporters. We're going to enjoy have Barack Obama as the President of The United States of America.

Is there no end to the whinning? Get a clue, Clinton was given front runner status from day one, earlier than day one - they were talking about her running for President as soon as she became a Senator. The rumors in the 2004 election was that they had planted people into the Kerry campaign to derail him to allow her to run in 08.

She didn't have to do squat to launch her campaign, it was all but given to her. Now that her campaign isn't doing so well she wants to call foul - well the time to call foul was when they wouldn't allow Kucinich to debate in Nevada - but she sat her butt down and debated knowing that GE had gone to court to stop the American people from hearing what Kucinich had to say. So Hillary can kiss my lily white butt (I do acknowledge that Obama and Edwards also attended the debate in Nevada but they aren't crying about their press).

I honestly don't think Hillary would make a bad president but I am not 100% sure that she would win in the general election against McCain, especially if Nader is running. There are a whole lot of people who would be energized to get out and vote against any Clinton on the ballot. I don't think Obama has that same anti-sentiment. In other words, I think there are more Clinton haters than there are bigots.

It's a conspiracy theory.

Math dictates that Hillary has to win by large amounts, not the media. Her deficit wouldn't be big if this was before Super Tuesday, but this is well into the primary season and the opportunity to make that ground up is practically gone.

So yea... the media bias thing is a conspiracy theory. Funny how they happen to follow the Clinton's around.

USMC1980... Thank you, someone who sees it the same as I do!!! She was not the ONLY Democrat who voted to fund the war on misinformation from her own government! Is it not amazing how one branch will lie to another branch all for their own seedy plans to reap oil and contract profits for their buddies?? The whole last 8 years was all a set up to get friends rich at the expense of soldiers, NY citizens etc (Yeah you bet I think 9/11 had inside help BIG TIME), all under the guise of "terrorist attacks". More attacks occurred against Americans under George Dumbya Bush than any other president! How convenient once all the money gets raked in and 2006 elections were done, there have been no threat levels in over a year, no ORANGE alerts, no anthrax scares, nothing! Just wait, as we near 2008 November, we will see the threat levels and "new warnings" pop up all over. Watch Olbermman's video about it...
As she said last night in the debate Barack spoke out against the war, but he was not there to vote for or against it, so how long will he ride that one and milk it for all its worth the same way Guilliani did with 9/11? We will NEVER KNOW if he would have voted for or against it will we? Nope. And I bet he would have. He has voted to fund it ever since, the same as Hillary, to save lives.
I posted earlier to the exact same thing of unequal coverage, look right now!! Huffington negative titles against Hillary compared to Barack since the debate! Frankly she did great. He covered his face with his hands up a lot. Body language people. Scribbled nothing, (You could tell) while when he talked she just stared intently at him and listened. She talked and he "Takes notes". But how often was she cut short, or asked questions first?? Ariana has disliked the Clintons since her conservative days! She has some grudge, because the disparity in coverage is CRYSTAL CLEAR!!

Bill Clinton is also emotionally disturbed. I think John Edwards appears vain at times on camera, and that's why the 400 dollar haircut story took off.

Now imagine me saying these things about Senator Clinton, and I'm being called sexist. I'm male and Caucasian, but it hasn't prevented me from being passed over for jobs and abused during life. Most men by far are not " alpha males" and they don't mis-treat women and they believe woman are equal to men and they share the same suffering woman do.

Hillary has the battle scars, doesn't she? She does have the experience, and those battle scars have only made her stronger. I don't want to wait around for change. Hillary knows how to make change happen, and it's evident she can handle the battle too. Being a woman is only part of who she is, her quailities and character passes Obama.

She has scars from getting beat. She hasn't won anything (unless you count her senate run, in a cherry picked state). She lost health care, her single biggest fight. She hasn't really achieved anything substantial. As far as her qualities and character, I think she's shown her true colors pretty well, and lost 11 in a row.

Hillary has "hundreds" of volunteers? I doubt that. Notice that they lumped them together as "volunteers and staffers." It was probably 99% paid staffers, with a handful of volunteers. Why? Because Hillary has no volunteers. That's why a. she gets beaten on the ground -- thousands of Obama volunteers flood into the state while b. she has to pay people to "volunteer" for her, burning through cash. Obama, meanwhile, doesn't have to spend that money because real people who believe in him are willing to volunteer their time and money.

now you know why hillary has little support and no money, and why Obama is swamped with money and volunteers that that money doesn't have to be spent on.

People love Hillary. My family, friends and I just signed up to volunteer for Hillary. She has thousands upon thousands of volunteers from coast to coast. We have given up time out of our busy lives because she inspires us. And we are sick and tired of the way the media lies about Hillary every chance they get. She is a great person and so very nice. You should really get to know Hillary before you judge her falsely. She has a great sense of humor.

She is one of the smartest women in America and she deserves to be our next president.

Obama himself admitted when he won his senate seat that he was not experienced enough to be president. I wonder what changed?

I agree. She has to be able to have some pretty thick skin to get through all the battles she has already. Obama has no idea, does he?

The reason Hillary is losing is simple. She has run a lousy campaign. She has not been able to reach the majority because her message is "In it to win it" a thin and meaningless marketing slogan which suggests she thinks this campaign should be about Hillary. The rest of the country seems to think there are more pressing issues to discuss.

Hillary has flipped. flopped, contorted and smeared. She is inconsistent. She has not been truthful. people feel it in their gut. The few times she chose the high road, her message began to resonate. She foolishly chose to go another route and is paying the price for politicking as usual.

xcrunner77, your doubts about how many people Hillary has volunteering and actually staff really concerns me. There are so many more who were not even on that list. Obama has had cash issues, all candidates do. What is your point? REAL PEOPLE? Same with HIllary. Your point?

Millions compared to thousands of supporters SHOULD tell you something if you ever listened. Obama has cash issues? Isn't that a little too Clintonian to impose your problems on somebody else? His cash problem is trying to keep track of it all because there's so much coming in.

NEW YORK TIMES VIOLATED A JOURNALISTIC PRINCIPLE OF FAIRNESS IN REFUSING TO PUBLISH A LETTER OF CLINTON CAMPAIGN IN REPLY TO ITS ARTICLE

By Hermie Rotea

It is lack of space, stupid.

That, in effect, is what Sunday New York Times told the Clinton campaign when the magazine refused to publish its short 218-word letter taking issue with a report by Patrick Healy.

Healy suggested that the Clinton campaign is not only deteriorating, but that she (Senator Clinton) is foreshadowing her exit (from her presidential bid) through valedictory statements.

The letter was signed by 503 Clinton campaign staffers and volunteers denying the story. But NYT editorial page editor Andy Rosenthal responded that he didn't run the letter because it would occupy "valuable space" for "ordinary readers" and that it was a thinly disguised "press release."

That is baloney.

Letter, press release or not, the NYT has a duty to publish the other side of an important issue of public interest and be fair in its presentation of news and views.

Free speech and press freedom are time-honored journalistic principle of the Fourth Estate. For the Sunday New York Times to violate such tradition does not speak well of this publication whose motto is to publish all the news that is fit to print.

The 503 names and signatures of Clinton campaign staffers and volunteers debunked the veracity of the Healy article. Why is that not pertinent to the story?

Assuming that they would occupy valuable space, NYT need not publish all the names. Even just the top signatory would suffice. But the letter should have been published.

What has happened to the New York Times? Has it degenerated into a tabloid?
