The Clinton campaign is fighting back against a Sunday New York Times report by Patrick Healy that suggests her campaign is not only deteriorating, but that she is foreshadowing her exit through valedictory statements.

Armed with hundreds of signatures from campaign staffers and volunteers, the campaign attempted to respond with a letter to the editor in the Times, but says it was rejected on the grounds that they hold "valuable space" for "ordinary readers." A Clinton aide pointed out that "This letter is a mere 218 words, and signed by 503 people - thirty three times as many people as the story cites, and all of them by name." Clinton staffers and volunteers also submitted individual letters, which the Times has yet to accept.

Below is a copy of the letter and the list of signatures.

(Update: NYT editorial page editor Andy Rosenthal responds, saying he didn't run the letter because it was a thinly disguised "press release." Citing the letter below, TPM's Greg Sargent talks to a Clinton insider about the campaign's apparent new strategy of running against the media.)

To the Editor,

In regards to Patrick Healy's story on Sun, Feb 24, 2008, "Somber Clinton Soldiers On as the Horizon Darkens"

The unnamed advisers and aides the story relies on speak for nobody but themselves.

The rest of us - thousands of her supporters, friends, members of her staff and volunteers - are working tirelessly each and every day and night, because we believe in Hillary. We believe she will win the nomination. We believe she will win in November. And we know she will make the best President of the United States.

Hillary is a voice for countless Americans across the country who need a champion, a problem solver, a president. That's what she's done her whole life. That's what inspires us. Those of us who have had the honor of working for Hillary Clinton - as First Lady, as Senator, and as a candidate for the Presidency - are awed by her passion and her service. We all strive to live up to her example, to do our best every day to serve this nation.

Millions of Americans across the country have already cast their votes and made it clear that they want Hillary Clinton as their president. Millions more have yet to have their chance. These are the opinions and voices that matter.

Signed,

Hillary Clinton staff & volunteers (Listed Alphabetically)

In a column last week, the highly respected, pulitzer prize winning NY Times columnist Maureen Dowd, compared Hillary Clinton to Laverne and Shirley, which was a sitcom about two moronic women sharing an apartment. This is just a dirty comment in the middle of political campaign by an "intellectual" who doesn't know the meaning of the word fairness. She is way over the top and should have the decency to apologize.

We're all entitled to our opinions, even Maureen Down. To think you know more than her, well... that speaks for itself.

- What I see above all in Barack Obama is a man of character, intelligence and compassion. He tells the truth - and doesn't use gutter political tactics like Karl Rove (or the Clintons).
- He has run a brilliant grassroots campaign. Starting out with enormous political and financial advantages, Hillary Clinton proceeded to manage her campaign straight down the drain - much as she mismanaged her health care plan back in the early 90's.
- When Barack Obama graduated number one in his class from Harvard Law School, he turned down big bucks to become a community organizer and Professor of Constitutional Law.
- Hillary Clinton generates most of her campaign funds from big donors and special interests, while Obama turns down all contributions from lobbyists.
- Obama opposed the Iraq war and the Kyl-Lieberman amendment – while Clinton supported both.
- All of Clinton’s foreign policy advisors supported the Iraq invasion – while all of Obama’s advisors opposed it.
- The Clinton campaign sent out a dishonest mailer to New Hampshire women shortly before the primary vote which claimed that Obama opposed abortion rights. For the truth, go to YouTube and search for “Lorna Brett Howard” (former head of Chicago N.O.W.).
- The Clinton campaign used a campaign of slurs and innuendo in an effort to “ghetto-ize” Sen. Obama – see: Mark “Cocaine” Penn, Bob “Madrassa” Kerrey, Bob “drug dealer” Johnson, and Bill “Jesse Jackson” Clinton, among others.
- Finally, Barack Obama has energized this electorate, brought millions of new voters into the process, and will be the most competitive candidate against John McCain by a long shot.

I can't wait until the veil is lifted from you eyes and you see the true nature of Obama. His campaign, with it's dishonest mailers and race-card playing, is, I'm sure, making Karl Rove giddy with delight.

I see a big campaign issue - STABILITY.
Clinton's behavior has been scary.
Watching some "performances" - I just go, "WOW!"
and not in a good sense.
Do some find hysteria appealing? I don't.

Hate women much? Perhaps you don't realize how misogynist and sexist your comment comes off?

It is well-timed anger. I am so anger that I'd rather see the GOP win than vote for Obama.

factanonverba, If you care about women, then I beg you to vote for the Democratic nominee and not McCain. Vote based on love and compassion, not anger and disappointment.

If you care about women, you should care passionately about women's reproductive autonomy, which McCain attacks again and again and again (see, for example, his vote today in favor of Vitter's bill that banned abortion services from the Indian Health Services). If you care about women, you should care about those in the military, fighting an unnecessary war and being exposed to rape by members of their own military. You might care about mothers, overwhelmingly people of color and economically underprivileged, who are burying children killed in Iraq - and McCain says 100 years more of this would be okee-dokee with him. You might care about all the women who need health care and can't afford it, and who won't get it under McCain. You might care about New Orleans and its women in crisis, the cancer we might get from FEMA trailers, the PTSD and lack of psychiatric care here, the status of "internally displaced persons" from NOLA like my schoolteacher mother.

To threaten to vote McCain because you might not get Hillary is to dismiss what is at stake for ALL women when Republicans get elected.

Please consider your sisters - and reconsider.

This is the reason I cannot get on the "hope train." There is an incredible amount of hatred against Clinton based on gender. She can never say or do anything right. She is judged more by her husband's actions (only the negative ones) than her own. If she is strong, she's a bitch, if she is tearful, she's faking. The New York Times is influencing the voters in this country to vote the way they decide, yet again. And the sheepish American public falls for it again.

I am sick of the hatred of women expressed constantly and especially when it comes from those who claim they are the good guys, the hope of the future. We are going backward, not forward. This male dominated country and it's media is just as bad as they were before the feminist movement. Maybe worse. Hatred is hatred. If it comes from a so-called "hope filled idealist", it's even uglier. Enjoy your Hillary bashing while you can, especially you younger ladies who seem to think equality with men means being as mean and cruel as they are, even to your own sex. When Hillary's gone, whatever will Huffpo have to do? Who will all the chauvinist pigs on televison news shows find to pick on? Poor haters, they will have to find a new victim. Without the Clintons, what ever will they do?

factanonverba, in stating what he perceives as Sen. Clinton's lack of "stability," DoninJoisey never asserts gender as it's cause. You concluded that gender was causal of stability and hysteria. As a matter of fact, he never uses a gender specific term or even eluded to gender. Who's the misogynist? What in anything he said indicates that he hates women?

The mainstream media has mauled and villified Sen. Clinton in the most sleazeridden manner of any sitting senator in modern history who has been convicted no other crime than being a good advocate and legislator. Bathroom sex addict Larry Craig received better treatment than her. It's no wonder epidemic numbers of women and children are disappearing off our streets, kidnapped and murdered - men take their cues from the press, and if this is how America treats a former first lady, well then Ciudad Juarez, here we come.

This is all Karl Rove, by the way. Just like he and the neocons set into motion the weapons of mass destruction campaign in 2002, they're repeating exactly the same Pavlov conditioning of the public with regard to Hillary Clinton. Obama, on the other hand, is the candidate they've groomed and financed to play the role of spoiler in this election. After Clinton's out of the race, his free ride will be over, and just you wait and see - Rove will field his Bush-Cheney successor ticket as independents. For more on the strategy, see the article I've posted at thecityedition.com. Here's a direct link:

One flew over the (factcheck2)'s Nest. So, let me get this straight, the mainstream media, in its "sleazeridden" attacks on Sen. Clinton is advocating kidnap and rape of women and children on an epidemic scale? Name one sleazy attack the media has made against Sen. Clinton. I will agree that the media has been hard on her but she's done a good job drawing negative attention on her own. For the love of pete, in the wake of the Bush/Cheney regime she's running on "Experience vs Hope!" The GOP has financed Sen. Obama's candidacy? His campaign financing records are available to the public. (www.opensecrets.org) Groomed? The GOP spent the better part of their Winter Retreat brainstorming attack strategies against the unforeseen Obama candidacy. (www.politico.com/news/stories/0208/8564.html) A Rove fielded Independent ticket? Come on Stretch Armstrong, where in the hell is there room on the ballot for an ultra-conservative third party candidate? The electorate is fed up with the neo-cons, that's why the Republicans couldn't nominate a true blue conservative. Worst conspiracy theory ever.

OK, we're done with this. We're done with Hillary Clinton. We would have allowed Clinton to bow out with our respect still in hand. But not now. Not after deciding that, while her campaign was in the tank and sinking fast, she has decided to "throw the kitchen sink" at Barack Obama. This includes the reported circulation of a picture of Barack in traditional african clothes. The denials of their participation in putting out the picture would have been enough. But then Congresswoman Tubbs from Ohio, a fervant Clinton supporter, came out and said a picture of Barack wearing clothes from his "native country" should not have bothered Obama. Not only was her comment incorrect, it had the same intent that putting the picture out in the first place did. It was to imply that Barack was somehow foreign and not a true American. This lie is the exact reason why people aren't supporting Hillary. And they just can't figure that out. So, as the attacks continue Senator Clinton, just remember with each attack, you are losing more respect from the American people. If you want to stay in public office, I suggest you use google maps to find the high road. You haven't found it yet, and I fear it might be too late.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:54 PM on 02/26/2008

It's probably not that that he's ashamed, it's more what the Clinton campaign spin machine will try to do with it.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:26 PM on 02/26/2008

It's not that he's ashamed, it's that this country is in the grips of a fear of muslims, and Barack Obama, with his middle name, in that garb, reinforces that.

It takes an incredibly tin ear not to pick up on that.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:37 AM on 02/27/2008

Nobody said he was ashamed. I think more pointedley, is that he was dismayed by the use of the photo as an attack against his being American. Sensitive? I would be sensitive too if I was attacked as being un-American, as a foreigner even though I spent my whole life making this a better country. This is exactly what we need to change. So yes, Clinton supporter, I am sensitive to an attack based on innuendo that belongs in the porta-potty it came from.

Stupid!

Blame the newspaper--not the candidate.

What happened to free speech.

Bush tatic--stiffle the media.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:04 PM on 02/26/2008

Let's be clear on this. Senator Obama has not stifled the press. He has not quelled, crushed or supressed the media. He has denied access and interviews to the national media or in other words "stiffed" the press. Because the two words sound the same doesn't make them the same and HuffPo's use of the word stifle in one of its shock headlines doesn't make it applicable. Declining an interview does not impede free speech. Sen. Obama is just as free to not talk to the press as he is to do so. He has chosen not to allow the national media to dictate the tone of his campaign and prefers to focus on local issues and local broadcast. GWB stiffed the press in his campaign but lacked the grassroots media effort. As president, it can be argued that GWB's influence over Fox News stifled the press by lowering the bar (CNN, MSNBC & other broadcast networks had to stoop to compete with Fox's ratings).

Does it bother anyone else that the vast majority of Hillary-hating Obamaniacs on HuffPo and elsewhere resort to creepy (if subconscious) misogyny when expressing their antipathy for HRC and her views?
She's "Sybil" when she's multidimensional or emotional. In acknowledging obstacles, she's "playing the victim." By responding forcefully to Obama's hit piece on her NAFTA record, she's somehow brought the campaign to a new negative low. (Good girls don't fight back.) By calling attention to the fact that maybe, just maybe, SNL got it right for once, she's ridiculed in all corners as ever more desperate in her desire to win "at all costs."
It goes without saying that people run for office with the goal of winning. Obama's drive is taken for granted, but it's clear that even in this day and age Hillary's "audacious" ambition makes many people uncomfortable. Still, many ambitious women and the men who admire them keep showing up to vote for her.
Are so many otherwise politically aware people so caught up in the historic "Obama Moment" that gender inequality and double-standards (being lesser evils than racism) are now somehow OK?
I guess Tina Fey and I didn't get the memo. Neither did Robin Morgan.

Listen yup dumbass. SNL is a comedy show that parodies everyone. If Hillary is talked about it is because of whop she has made herself out to be. She is disingenuous at best, and utterly unpalatable at best. Americans don't trust her or like her. The press parrots the populace (hence RATINGS). grow the hell up, there is nothing misogynistic about showing Hillary for what she is. I don't like her, I don't like what she stands for and I don't trust her, that doesn't mean I hate women you dullard.

I won't accuse you of being a "Sybil" because that would be really insulting to those who suffer from mental illness. I guess misogyny is off limits for Hillary supporters but mocking the mentally ill is perfectly acceptable. You go sister!

Obama's hit piece on her regarding NAFTA is factual except for the word 'boon'. Here's a story about Hillary going to Davos to brag to all the fat-cat globalists what a great job Bill did working with Republicans to get NAFTA passed:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/david-sirota/hillary-clinton-pretends-_b_86747.html

While I respect Tina Fey's choice of candidates as I would hope she would respect mine..I wouldn't call any woman a bitch or refer to myself as one. Women 'get things done' and a public figure calling women 'bitches' reinforces and encourages anti-feminist anti-women stereotypes in the media. I guess you and Tina Fey didn't get that memo either.

Good post clevelandchick. Davos is only the tip of the iceberg. Sen. Clinton also attended the Bilderberger Conference (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Bilderberg_attendees) and is rumored to be their preferred candidate.

You won't find any of that from yours truly. But you have to remember that this site slants toward Obama. This is not a hard news site and makes no claim to be impartial.

Huffpo notwithstanding, I find far more mud being flung by Clinton's actual campaign. I'm not a rabid supporter of either, but at the end of they day, the Clinton camp just seemed too sleazy with the attacks for my taste. So, I guess if you value the opinion of someone who isn't so emotionally involved, there you have it.

I absolutely love how people cry sexism and misogyny just because people don't like Hillary Clinton.
Is it really THAT unbelievable that someone might not support Sen Clinton for reason's OTHER THAN her gender? I mean, I would LOVE to have a fellow woman in the White House, but, unfortunate as it is, we have to make sure that we put the ABSOLUTE BEST woman possible there, because every woman candidate from that point forward will be compared to her, and if she blows it, it will set back women for decades to come. The same can be said for Obama and blacks, but I happen to think that Obama is more of a good thing for African Americans than Hillary Clinton would be for women.

I'm sorry, but the NAFTA flyers are about the softest "hit piece" I've ever seen. It's pretty amazing to me that the Obama campaign hasn't yet had any of these "oops" moments where some previously-unknown "staffer" throws a whopper out there, yet the Clinton campaign seems to be leaking them like it's going out of style. I don't know if that's more of a commentary on the candidates, their campaign styles, or the people who support them (I wish I knew!)

Forget all the name-calling. The simple fact is that the media have been walloping hell out of Hillary Clinton from Day One of the campaign right up to the current minute.

Whether you're for Hillary or Obama, this is unfair. Life is not fair, I hear you saying. OK, but the press is supposed to be.

Beyond this, the New York Times has a special commitment to fairness. And so, as the so-called voice of the future that's going to fix all the flaws in the old system, do blogs and bloggers.

This constant unfairness, more than anything else, is what has kept me in Hillary's corner, even though I'll certainly vote for Obama if he's nominated. Got nothing against him, but he hasn't won my sympathy by being stomped on as his current opponent has, day after day after day.

If he wins the nomination, of course, he will be. That drumbeat has already begun, but he has continued to be a media darling vs. Hillary.

Kucinich is my candidates, the Corporatist MSM didn't even let him debate. Ron Paul can't win, Neverland Nader can't win.

HRC is a tough street fighting politician. That's the world she grew up in. It's not serving her well, but please name a president who didn't use Negative campaigning.

Obama is my choice. He has the charm and oratorical skills the every president has had. Yet Obama also has the issues down.

If your mind is still open, listen to this video of Obama being interview by the SF newspaper board. Just issues.

A lot of people thought that the war was for something entirely different and that was how it was protrayed to everone. Hillary decided that she needed to be part of the committee to oversee some of that, and when she found the tactics of the "hidden agenda" she fought against those tactics. She also did not want our men and women in Iraq stranded with out the proper equipment either. She saw the war moving from what it was supposed to be, and made it known.

There's a difference between saying that someone's poor track record on an issue calls into question their ability to be president, and accepting their endorsement.

Obviously. Do you for a minute think that Obama is going to reject Clinton's endorsement? Would he be morally obligated to? Or vice versa? Useyourbrain.

Name a president who didn't go negative?
Jimmy Carter.
I wasn't impressed with him as president, but I deeply respect him now - for him to do "Habitat for Humanity" and such puts him in the "decent man" category in my book.

I, too, liked Kucinich, and it was WRONG that he was excluded from debates. I like his sole payer health plan best - cut out the insurance companies with their fraud and disgusting profits, but I didn't like his "open borders", seeing nothing wrong with Spanish as an equal language. I also liked Kucinich stating that Iraq is all about OIL - which it is.

Be that as it may, the choice is now Clinton or Obama.

Why would I want a third Clinton term? Saw that already - twice. Better than Bush, but that's hardly a recommendation.

We can do better, if we reach for it!

Everyone likes the concept of a single-payer health care system (okay, most people do) but you have to figure out how to do it in reality. I think Obama's and Clinton's plans are a good middle ground and stepping stone (although I really don't like the idea of being forced to purchase it because the criteria for who can afford it and who gets a free ride usually doesn't take into account things like mortgages and so forth which eat up the money that looks like so much on paper...)

You Obama supporters need a history lesson. Obviously you don't know how politics work in this country.

1960: JFK wins - then they kill him.

1968: RFK becomes the nominee and then they kill him.

1972: Ed Muskie was doing great in the primaries until the media repeated over and over about his tears. This took him down.

1976: Carter almost loses the election after the MSM played up his comment that he lusted in his heart for other women. He saw a 33 point lead evaporate as the attacks by the media continued. He barely won.

1988: Media stakes out Gary Hart's house to catch him with Donna Rice. Harpoons his bid. Then they go after Dukakis and show the picture of him on the tank over and over.

1992: Media follows up on every crazy story about Clinton the womanizer. They tried, but in the end they couldn't beat the smartest politico this country has had.

1996: They lose again, but once again they tried to make something stick against Clinton. These losses caused a lot of the hatred that the MSM and the GOP have for the Clintons. They don't like losing.

2000: We all know what they did to Gore. He "invented the Internet" was the one they used the most to harpoon him. And when it was obvious chimp was stealing it, they stood silent.

2004: Kerry gets swift boated. Guy goes to Nam, gets shot at, gets some medals, and for that he gets crushed.

Which brings us to 2008...

2008: Media goes after Hillary, knowing she, like her husband, knows how to win. Once eliminated, they set their sights on Barack Hussein Obama. They will swift boat the shit out of him and his wife.

In Conclusion: This country, the news media, and the political establishment are complete slime. If you want democracy move to France. And don't ever expect a DEM to get a fair shake by the media. Ever.

Her campaign is in debt she needs the contributions to wipe out her debts. She should have long ago made a deal with Obama to pay some or part of all her debts, now I don't think that deal could be made. I doubt whether they will be spending big in any of these states, they will be conserving for by next Wednesday it will all be over, whether she wins the two states or not, the super delegates will all follow Dodd's lead.

I think the DNC allowing Hillary enough time to make a graceful exit, pushing her could cause some ruffled feathers.

Don't be so certain that the supers will tow the BO line. They are there specifically NOT supposed to follow the primary votes.

"Bill Clinton and HRC are major fund raisers for the DNC and Senate campaigns. If they decide to hold back because they have been trashed by BO supporters, don't be surprised. You people should all be ashamed."
Huh? So many questions... where to start!!!
1) Who is "they" and why would they be "hold[ing] back"?
2) If you're referring to fund raising, why would they "hold back" when her numbers are tanking and she needs all the help she can get?
3) Why would she/they "hold back" because of supposed "trashing" by "BO supporters"?
4) Who is "you people" and why should we/they be ashamed? If you're referring to Obama supporters, shouldn't Clinton supporters be just as ashamed for their anti-Obama comments?

"Don't be so certain that the supers will tow the BO line. They are there specifically NOT supposed to follow the primary votes."

Soooo... superdelegates are supposed to vote the exact OPPOSITE of how their state voted? Or are they just supposed to pick a name out of a hat? If you've followed the news any, a lot of superdelegates, in order to dissipate the talk of the old "smoke-filled rooms" idea, actually ARE planning on mirroring their votes to the voices of the people in their respective primaries.

I wonder if it is FINALLY starting to dawn on Obama supporters that their guy is exactly who the MSM wants to go after? You know, the middle name. The last name that rhymes with the head terrorist. The wife that spouts anti-American comments. The guy that dresses up like a Muslim. Let me make this clear. I like Obama. I would gladly have him as the VP. But unless you have a death wish there is only one person that can take what is coming. Her name is Hillary. Picking Obama is a death wish and a vote for McCain. They just have too much ammo and over the next 7-8 months this will be used relentlessly against Obama.
