The Clinton campaign is fighting back against a Sunday New York Times report by Patrick Healy that suggests her campaign is not only deteriorating, but that she is foreshadowing her exit through valedictory statements.

Armed with hundreds of signatures from campaign staffers and volunteers, the campaign attempted to respond with a letter to the editor in the Times, but says it was rejected on the grounds that they hold "valuable space" for "ordinary readers." A Clinton aide pointed out that "This letter is a mere 218 words, and signed by 503 people - thirty three times as many people as the story cites, and all of them by name." Clinton staffers and volunteers also submitted individual letters, which the Times has yet to accept.

Below is a copy of the letter and the list of signatures.

(Update: NYT editorial page editor Andy Rosenthal responds, saying he didn't run the letter because it was a thinly disguised "press release." Citing the letter below, TPM's Greg Sargent talks to a Clinton insider about the campaign's apparent new strategy of running against the media.)

To the Editor,

In regards to Patrick Healy's story on Sun, Feb 24, 2008, "Somber Clinton Soldiers On as the Horizon Darkens"

The unnamed advisers and aides the story relies on speak for nobody but themselves.

The rest of us - thousands of her supporters, friends, members of her staff and volunteers - are working tirelessly each and every day and night, because we believe in Hillary. We believe she will win the nomination. We believe she will win in November. And we know she will make the best President of the United States.

Hillary is a voice for countless Americans across the country who need a champion, a problem solver, a president. That's what she's done her whole life. That's what inspires us. Those of us who have had the honor of working for Hillary Clinton - as First Lady, as Senator, and as a candidate for the Presidency - are awed by her passion and her service. We all strive to live up to her example, to do our best every day to serve this nation.

Millions of Americans across the country have already cast their votes and made it clear that they want Hillary Clinton as their president. Millions more have yet to have their chance. These are the opinions and voices that matter.

Signed,

Hillary Clinton staff & volunteers (Listed Alphabetically)

ATL: Why do you continue to post irrelevant crap about a candidate's child? Could you perhaps be... a repug troll?

What if one of the Bush twins got a high-paying job that they were unbelievably unqualified for? Would the suggestion that she got the job because of her father be "post[ing] irrelevant crap about a candidate's child" (ignoring for the moment the fact that he's not a candidate) or a genuine concern about abuse of power?

So now we have a vast left-wing conspiracy. Barring a miracle, Obama will win. I just hope you people know what you're doing. Faith in any politician requires an extraordinary leap. All I have left to say is: GERONIMO!

Secret nefarious plot to rule the world...

I have more faith in Obama than Clinton, especially after seeing how she's run this campaign so poorly.

1.) The silly plagiarism accusation that really came back to bite her in the ass after it was revealed she cribbed from both her husband and John Edwards in her ending statement in the last debate.

2.) Her latent outrage at mailers that had been in circulation for a month and the fact that the mailers essentially tell the truth - her health care plan is a mandate and she did support NAFTA publicly.

3.) That horrifying over the top openly mocking of Obama supporters in that speech - ugh! Then her and her campaign's general mocking of both Obama supporters and the grassroots in general. Not smart if you need their help in November. She's alienated the very people she'd need if she wants to win in November.

4.) The never-ending victimhood. Obama's been called an unpatriotic drug-dealing terrorist plant by some of Hillary's surrogates and the right wing.

And I'm supposed to feel sorry for her because Chris Matthews made sexist remarks about her? He makes sexist remarks about every woman on the planet, he's a pig and the ratings for his show are second from the bottom (Glenn Beck has that honor). Would she prefer to be called an unpatriotic drug-dealing terrorist plant?

Meanwhile Obama has not mocked Hillary's supporters and only taken her on directly. He's out fund-raised her 2 to 1. He's gained 20 points in the polls in the last month and a half. His campaign handles every silly thing both HRC and the Repugs throw at him with aplomb.

After watching the two campaigns, I have a lot more faith in Obama. I don't think there is a vast left wing conspiracy - a bad campaign is a bad campaign. She's got nobody to blame but herself.

Saturday Night Live had it right. If Obama were attacked the way Clinton has been he'd of folded like a wet tent. At least Clinton has the stones to stand up and fight for what she believes in and that includes getting slammed unfairly. you poor sob's will never see universal health unless you get it in this election. so when you see your family and friends sick and dying with no one to help you remember that.

Do you think Ms. Clinton will give you better healthcare?

Michael Moore says insurance industry would love Clinton’s healthcare plan................................

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton’s (D-N.Y.) proposal to mandate that all people purchase health insurance would be a boon to the industry, filmmaker Michael Moore said Friday.............................

“Can you imagine, every time Sen. Clinton says that, the licking of the lips that goes on with these health insurance executives?” Moore said during a conference call with reporters.

You mean like erroneously being accused of being a muslim? Of swearing in on a Quran? Of being told he's only succesful because blacks are supporting their own? Of being called a Bush clone? Of being accused of using Rovian tactics? Of having his patriotism questioned? Of being a no-chance candidate?

Clinton doesn't have stones. She was gracious and respectful when her win was inevitable, now that she's actually facing a challenge she's become an embarrassment. She is using personal attacks to discredit and humiliate her opponent. Obama has kept his voice in the debate about the issues. He may attack Hillary's policy positions and her record, but not does not attack her on personal level.

Hillary couldn't get universal health care the first time she tried. That is the record of her experience.

Why should she have another eight years, she and Willie tried for eight years and got nothing. Ready on day one my ass, we didn't get it last time and I damn well ain't going watch another eight years go by and give her another shot.....................Go Obama

Are you kidding me? Obama has already been attacked. He's been called "a drug-dealing unpatriotic terrorist plant that the military fears and is just like Dubya" by not only the right wing and the media; but Hillary and her surrogates. Hillary and the media have also painted those who support Obama as cultists so not only has Obama been attacked but so have his supporters.

So that whole talking point that Obama hasn't taken any attacks is patently false.

The difference between Obama being attacked and Hillary being attacked is that he has still managed to out fund-raise her 2 to 1 and gain 20 points in the polls.

BTW, guess who is going to 'get us' Universal Health Care? Not the president, regardless who gets the nom - the Congress has to pass it. We're not going to get UHC unless we can get 16 more Democrats in the Senate.

Obama polls better than Hillary when matched against McCain. Her negative polling is much higher than his. He brings a hell of a lot more voters to the polls, so more Dems are likely to get elected to the Senate if he is the nominee. The unions have endorsed Obama, their GOTV efforts equal at least a 20% bump.

If you want UHC? Vote for the candidate that can get more Democrats elected to the Senate. I hope, for my family and friends that are sick and dying, it is Obama, because then they might have a shot.

We seen Obama over react to the Novak story a few months back now he says it's Raciest to show a picture of him dressed like a Arab. If this is the way he responds to little matters like these he will fold like a tent under the Repuks attacks. We need someone with the balls to stand up to the swift boaters and so far the little lady seems to be the only one in this race with any.

It takes a weak man, or woman, to say anything to discredit the other. It takes a truly strong person to turn the other cheek and continue speaking about the issues.

Hillary is the perfect warm up for Obama. She has tried all of the tricks that were employed against Bill and her family while they were in office. He has not been distracted and has remained focused on the White House, as Hillary should have been instead of attempting to destroy her opponents.

Obama will be ready for McCain and the republican machine.

I don't think so. I think we'll see the nice friendly sympathetic Clinton. It's in line with her appearance on 700 club today.

Just another example of how messed up her message and campaign is. Attack, attack, attack and then all of a sudden we get a "prayer is strength" moment.

The surge is only a stop-gap measure that will ultimately backfire.

Seems to me that by buying off Sunni militias with money and weapons, we are arming an insurgency that will eventually fight the Shi'ite majority government forces. Yes, we bought some "reduced violence" in the short term, but didn't we do something similar with Saddam when we armed him in his war against Iran in the 1980s? Look how that came back and bit us in the butt.

The only way to reduce violence in Iraq permanently is to establish a real coalition government made up of all three major factions with military and police forces composed of a mixture of the factions. That effort has failed miserably, and, IMHO, it will continue to fail.

We now have Kurd units of the Iraqi army, Shi'ite units of the Iraqi army, armed Sunni warlords with their own armies, and rogue Shi'ite extremist factions like Sadr's. Is there any doubt where this is headed? McCain may be right; we may have to have a presence in Iraq for 10,000 years in order to resolve this in a "favorable" manner.

When we invaded Iraq, we were like a bull in a china shop. As Powell said, "We broke it so we own it." But the longer the bull remains in the china shop the more things are being shattered.

Someone please explain to me exactly what outcome we hope for with our continuing presence in a fractious and fractured Middle Eastern Islamic country. Please, what is our objective and our exit strategy? Or should I say strategery?

Let's get real here. When have you seen or read an article that was favorable to senator Clinton? I have yet to read one. They all sing the praises of Obama, they never challenge anything he says for fear of being called a racist. I also here that the super delagates have been told that if they do not vote for Obama and vote for Hillary there will be riots in the street of the convention. Tell me people do you condone something like that? Jesse Jackson Jr. also told the black super delagates that if they don't vote for Obama they will make sure that they do not win their next election. Is that right? So some are switching to his side. I thought they don't cast their vote until the convention. And if the Clinton's could cancel article then why are their so many of them on a daily basis? Name one article that was not kind to Obama? Just one. Everyone wants to see the women loose, they can't stand it when a women is smarter than them and so they blast her every day, but just like years ago they blasted Susan B. Anthony because she dared to say that women should vote too. Well you have to hand it to Hillary because she takes it everyday and from everyone, newspapers, talk show heads, and even us dumb tread writers, who have never done anything in the way of accomplishments, but boy could we dish it out to a woman who has contributed much to people and their causes. I guess it makes us fell good when we knock a good person down. Congratulations to you all who trash her on a daily basis.

Wow, I have seen plenty of pro-Clinton articles. Sorry if you did not find them. I did not save them, as she is not my candidate.

I believe that on this site you can find plenty of them if you search the archives. You can also find them on realclearpolitics.com.

And many of the posters on other sites are much more pro-Hillary than this site. Take a look around.

I keep hearing this "pro-Obama anti-Clinton media" claim. Now, it's not possible to read every single article out there, but I do quite a bit of news-reading each day because my job is very, very boring :) And you know what? Most of the articles I read are neither pro-Obama OR pro-Clinton. Most articles I've read have only listed facts... such as Obama winning 11 primaries in a row, or rising numbers, to give a few examples... andd there are even several fact-checking articles, especially surrounding the NAFTA tift. I haven't found any evidence of a pro-Obama bias and I actually remember before Obama picked up momentum that the media was basically calling Clinton a shoe-in for the nomination. So does that mean that they had a pro-Clinton agenda and have just collectively changed their minds, or does it just mean that, as political reporters, political analysts, and political pundits, they are REPORTING ON POLITICAL TRENDS?

Okay for days, the Hill campaign has been saying if she doesn't win both states she's out. WTF...Now it’s if she wins Ohio she goes on. She has no integrity which is obvious. Throwing the kitchen sink at his is a joke. She has more skeletons than a graveyard. She's just dragging herself into the abyss.

Anybody heard from Ralph in the last five or six hours? Tell him Nohat took his advice and is now taking notes. Hillary should do the same.

We don’t get it; we read and we read it and we read it:
"Millions of Americans across the country have already cast their votes and made it clear that they want Hillary Clinton as their president."
The reason we don't get it is that, it seems to me, Barack Obama had more people among those millions that want him for their president. To borrow from a poet, Pablo Neruda, the Great Chilean Poet, "Which is the and which is the how?"
The last time we checked majority rules in
America.
Oh, where do I get a fetching outfit like Barack Obama was wearing in all the front pages of newspapers in this country?
Hillary keeps channeling Rudsolini, and Rudsolini is dead, remember? "The verb, the noun and 911?"
I think they would get better results if they paid for the ad. You know what? They are running out of ploys. You do have to give them credit for creativity-jut not Obama-like creativity-those who love words shall live by them; and make a difference in the world.

Enough said.

It is time we stood up for something.

Yes, We Can!

Uh, you lost me there. Before you get riled up, I should mention that I am not a Clinton supporter. I just wanted to perhaps remind you that majority does not rule. Unless you mean majority of delegates. And in the general, I think the electoral process of 2000 and to a lesser extent 2004 should have removed all doubt from your mind. Majority does not rule in America.
