The Clinton campaign is fighting back against a Sunday New York Times report by Patrick Healy that suggests her campaign is not only deteriorating, but that she is foreshadowing her exit through valedictory statements.

Armed with hundreds of signatures from campaign staffers and volunteers, the campaign attempted to respond with a letter to the editor in the Times, but says it was rejected on the grounds that they hold "valuable space" for "ordinary readers." A Clinton aide pointed out that "This letter is a mere 218 words, and signed by 503 people - thirty three times as many people as the story cites, and all of them by name." Clinton staffers and volunteers also submitted individual letters, which the Times has yet to accept.

Below is a copy of the letter and the list of signatures.

(Update: NYT editorial page editor Andy Rosenthal responds, saying he didn't run the letter because it was a thinly disguised "press release." Citing the letter below, TPM's Greg Sargent talks to a Clinton insider about the campaign's apparent new strategy of running against the media.)

To the Editor,

In regards to Patrick Healy's story on Sun, Feb 24, 2008, "Somber Clinton Soldiers On as the Horizon Darkens"

The unnamed advisers and aides the story relies on speak for nobody but themselves.

The rest of us - thousands of her supporters, friends, members of her staff and volunteers - are working tirelessly each and every day and night, because we believe in Hillary. We believe she will win the nomination. We believe she will win in November. And we know she will make the best President of the United States.

Hillary is a voice for countless Americans across the country who need a champion, a problem solver, a president. That's what she's done her whole life. That's what inspires us. Those of us who have had the honor of working for Hillary Clinton - as First Lady, as Senator, and as a candidate for the Presidency - are awed by her passion and her service. We all strive to live up to her example, to do our best every day to serve this nation.

Millions of Americans across the country have already cast their votes and made it clear that they want Hillary Clinton as their president. Millions more have yet to have their chance. These are the opinions and voices that matter.

Signed,

Hillary Clinton staff & volunteers (Listed Alphabetically)

Leave it to the Clinton Campaign to try to "fight back" against an article printed in a newspaper.

They might as well go tilting at windmills.

Hillary Clinton has a formidable opponent in this race: her own record.

Hillary voted FOR the Iraq war authorization, without even bothering to read the Iraq national intelligence estimate. This colossal error in judgment has had a huge cost for our nation: 4000 dead Americans, and more than 10 times that many tragically wounded. These war casualties greatly surpass our losses on 9/11.

Then, as if to prove she has learned absolutely nothing from her "mistake" of voting for the war, she voted for the ridiculous, warmongering Kyl-Lieberman act just a few months back. Kyl-Lieberman gives Bush the green light to start a new war with Iran at the time of his choosing.

No wonder she is desperately trying to change the subject!

I expect all politicians to change their record at will. Wouldn't trust them if they didn't.

What they can't change is their character.

Quick question; Why wouldn't they just take out a full page ad if they wouldn't publish this letter for free?

Good question... They should have actually...

But we wouldn't be talking about it if they had done that... bad press is better than no press at all....

Because the Clinton campaign can't afford it?

That's probably one good reason.

Why pay for an ad when you can write one, send it to the Times as a letter, and complain when they don't print it? Always count on the press to cover any controversy, no matter how manufactured.

Leon Penetta calls out the Clinton campaign:

"Mr. Panetta, who served as chief of staff in the White House from July 1994 to January 1997, and who has contributed $2000 to Mrs. Clinton’s presidential campaign, complained that Mr. Penn “is a political pollster from the past.”

”I never considered him someone who would run a national campaign for the presidency,” he said.

He asserted that Mr. Penn “comes from an old school, like Karl Rove—it’s all about dividing people into smaller groups rather than taking the broader approach that was needed.”

Referring to Barack Obama, he said, “I think he really captured early on this deep feeling in the country about needing change in Washington. And people have underestimated how deep that sense was, just how much people felt the need for change.”"

We must change, for without change, there will be no change. Change is good. Hope is good. Without hope, you have no hope.

It's a powerful thing to hope for change.

Personally I think that if we can change the way we define change, maybe changing it to something that changes the actual meaning, a change that will change all American's view of change, that kind of change will definitely change things from the way they are now to the way a real change would change the change we've already changed.

Never forget: Hillary Clinton voted for the Iraq War resolution and the Patriot Act, thus helping to give Baby Bush a blank check for his illegal war and to squash our liberties.

Obama along with Clinton continued to fund the Iraq war, and he too voted for the Patriot Act. Along with Clinton, he helped to give Baby Bush a blank check for Bush's illegal war and to squash our liberties.

Obama voted for the 2nd Patriot Act, that had undone some of the crap from the 1st one. He didn't give Bush a blank check for the war, because he didn't vote for the war. Granted, only Clinton was in the Senate at the time of the vote, she voted for it. Many Democrats stood against the War in the Senate at the time - she was not one of them. Use facts in your arguements.

Geee, I wonder how Obama would have voted...you know...if he could actually do so.

Hindsight is 20/20 and Obama's claim of the high ground is silly, considering he never had to step up and vote one way or another.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 06:05 PM on 02/26/2008

Actually, although Obama was not there to vote, he was asked his opinon of the Iraq war in 2002 and said the following:

I know that Saddam poses no imminent and direct threat to the US, or to his neighbors. I know that even a successful war against Iraq will require a US occupation of undetermined length, at undetermined cost, with undetermined consequences. I know that invasion of Iraq without a clear rationale, without strong international support will only fan the flames of the Middle East, and encourage the worst, rather than the best, impulses of the Arab world, and strengthen the recruitment arm of al-Qaeda. I am not opposed to all wars. I'm opposed to dumb wars."

Hmmmm......sounds like he knew what he was talking about.

The Obama campaign is running circles around the Clinton campaign - out organizing in a tremendous way - and the Clinton campaign is spending it's time getting signatures from campaign staffers to protest a story in the NYTimes. My God.

Just read the strangest. saddest thing about Hillary. An article by Mark Pantinkin in The Providence Journal. He'd been to a rally for Hillary on Sunday last in Rhode Island. Said she looked good and spoke well, that her supporters love her. "The throng was almost wall to wall," he wrote, then he added, "But one of those walls was a curtain across the middle of the gym, and the other side was empty."
Even though I can't stand her, it must be awful, a kind of slow death. Barring a miracle, as some have said...she is toast.

So, what exactly is your point?

That she didn't fill the room?

How big was the room? How many people would it have taken to fill it? How many people were expected?

This is the kind of disingenuous bullshit that makes the run up to the election unbearable.

Everybody knows MSNBC controls all the news media-- their nightly "Doc Blocks" of prison scenes and "Born In The Wrong Body" drown out the pro-Hillary views of ABC, CBS, CNN, The New York Times (until today) and The Washington Post (Fixed News doesn't count).

So Hillary is right to blame the media for her struggles, just as Keith Olbermann was to blame for our troops in Iraq not getting body armor. If it hadn't been for Chris Matthews being so mean to Hillary, she would have come up with a post-Super Tuesday strategy.

All the kids are talking about Tucker's show yesterday (he has his finger on the pulse of America, let me tell you), and nothing screams bias like Rachel Maddow's commentary or the mean rants of Eugene Robinson.

Shame on you, MSNBC!

With Hillary's 35 years of experience, she should have been prepared for the media. She spends thousands of dollars on parking, pizza, and dougnuts and then talks about her wonderful health care plan. Enough Hillary, go home. Oh right, she can't do that, as she doesn't have enough votes to get her back in the White House.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:58 PM on 02/26/2008

Say what you want about everyone else, but Rachel Maddow is the best. She has her own show on Air America - very successful because she is smart and funny and p[uts a different perspective on things. She is a lefty so of course there is a bias there but I don't think that she or anyone at MSNBC tries to hide that.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 06:00 PM on 02/26/2008

That was why I was being sarcastic-- Rachel Maddow is hardly a Hillary hater, and Eugene Robinson is also a calm voice of reason. So the anti-Hillary media really boils down to less than a dozen people at MSNBC, if in fact they actually are.

Is anyone as curious as I am as to why the story now reads that Obama was dressed in Somalian garb and not Kenyan garb as reported yesterday?? If this is true and I suspect it is, we have a bit to be concerned about since Somalia is the country which commits horrific crimes against woman and female babies, forced circumcision of their genitals. Why is Obama visiting this nation and on who's behalf? I am certain our govt. never asked him to go. What is his true purpose? Yesterday, we read that he went to learn how their tribes organize themselves. Why would we care if they are committing acts of brutality among their own people. Why aren't you concerned about this conflict of interest. He should not be embracing the politics of a brutal society. Something is not right with this at all.

Some help with your reading challenges:

"Barack Obama, D-Ill., right, is dressed as a Somali Elder by Sheikh Mahmed Hassan, left, during his visit to Wajir, a rural area in northeastern Kenya, ..."
Chicago Sun-Times

As for your cultural bigotry, can't help much there.

As an agnostic whose research on comparative religions is deep and broad, I suggest you attempt to take a pilgrimage to MECCA. Let me know how well you do.

The three Abrahamic Religions have been a scourge to the Earth for over 2,000 years. Real Religion comes from within and needs no dogmatic doctrines of control, whether they be Judaism, Christianity or Islam [all three who borrowed and rehashed ancient mythos of life over and over again but calling them their own inspired mystic teachings] yet this very notion of Intolerance is incumbent between these three dead religions fighting for Most Dead Religion of the Century.

The path to inner illumination comes from within and until one finds a sense of True Will and Purpose they'll follow messianic claptrap from any one who can take them away from their miserably shallow and pointless existence, even for a while or say the past 8 years, as long as they feel they can have some sense that they are not alone.

Movements are a disease. The hard work is being a complete Individual. The machine is a collection of separate machines functioning within their own space.

We continue to screw the world up by proclaiming a singular path or providence the world must adopt and that recursive disease of civilization continues to rear it's decrepid head every few decades.

It's as if we can't have harmonic oscillations so we have to screw it up and then screw it up some more by attempting to undue the previous screw ups. It becomes one giant Cespool of Collective Hate, under the guise of Righteous Change.

Cultural bigotry?? MamaBird62 Our Newspapers here in New York where they print the truth, say it is Somalia, not Kenya. Also, if you lived in Somalia, I doubt you would fare very well. I don't believe that color is more important than gender. That's right. The creator made man and woman. Who cares about the color of the skin. You all have been brainwashed into thinking that white people are cultural biggots. Unfortunately, it isn't that you can't read, your problem is that you fail to discern the implications of this to other women who have had to flee from this country. I can't even pity you because to be quite honest I have ceased feeling empathy for you who condone butchery.

Since when is wearing the native garb of a culture "embracing" all of their politics and traditions? Somalia is also a country with large numbers of starving people. But this aside, I suppose since you object to some of their more archaic cultural practices, all Somalians are monsters and you won't be donating food to them anytime soon. You just bought the Clinton bait, hook line and sinker. They leaked this photograph in the most cynical way possible to feed off of racial prejudice, are denying that Hillary's immediate circle did so(while not denying that it came from someone in their campaign), and quietly hoping it catches fire and is shown all across the media(which it is).

You know they are starving because of their leaders. The same way the people of South Africa are being ravaged by AIDS because they have horrible leaders who tell them that HIV doesn't cause AIDS. These leaders don't care if their people are dying. Haven't you all learned anything yet. These leaders instill fear and hatred of our civilized world including western medicine to keep the populations oppressed. This has nothing to do with politics and everything to do with decency and respect for human life. If you can not discern the difference yet, then you are not a kind human being.

Its irrelevant what country it is. As a symbol of hospitality, leaders in other nations typically will offer their traditional clothing to try on (it it applies). That is ALL THIS IS. Hillary's folks sent this out to perpetuate racial prejudice against him. Its horrible, what Hillary Clinton has done to this race. Sad, really.

You are dead wrong!!! No politician should automatically engage in any diplomacy with a country that oppresses women and babies, unless there has been a committment by those leaders- political or religious, to change their practices and stop the butchery. You really all have stopped your medication. If Somalia were a country like Turkey, I would have no problem with Obama dressing or visiting the nation. This isn't about him being Muslim, its about his affiliations with people who espouse hatred toward the female race and torture their women. Again as I have posted before regarding moderation: If you affiliate yourself with these leaders with no measure toward positive change then you can be seen as one of their team. Their is an expression in the Spanish language, which many of you may know,"Dime con quien andas y te dire quien eres." Basic translation: Tell me who you are with, and I will tell you who you are."
This is why Hillary took him to task on denouncing, as opposed to rejecting Farrakhan's endorsement. There is a huge difference with these two words with respect to the recipient of the hatred or bias. You can say,"I denounce..."and then do lunch behind everyone's back. But when you clearly send the message,"I reject.." it resonates like thunder. This is why religions like the Catholicism ask students who are receiving Confirmation "Do you reject...and not Do you denounce." I reject and denounce any leader who encourages hatred and hostility toward its female population. Even Obama's girlfriend Oprah has covered the atrocities against women in that country. You really should be ashamed. You want race relations but you can't even engage in a fairminded argument over what is a horrific abuse against women.

I'll bet we get to meet all of her personalities tonight. Maybe the moderator will ask them to identify themselves and inquire whether there are any others struggling to see the light of day.

Question: "Who are we talking to now?"

Answer: "We are called legion, for we are many."

I think that she's incredibly frustrated as nothing seems to be sticking to Senator Obama AND the Clintons DO NOT like to lose at anything. It's hard for her to accept this! I just hope that she can leave with her dignity...that will say something important about her....that she at least has some class & style!
