The Clinton campaign is fighting back against a Sunday New York Times report by Patrick Healy that suggests her campaign is not only deteriorating, but that she is foreshadowing her exit through valedictory statements.

Armed with hundreds of signatures from campaign staffers and volunteers, the campaign attempted to respond with a letter to the editor in the Times, but says it was rejected on the grounds that they hold "valuable space" for "ordinary readers." A Clinton aide pointed out that "This letter is a mere 218 words, and signed by 503 people - thirty three times as many people as the story cites, and all of them by name." Clinton staffers and volunteers also submitted individual letters, which the Times has yet to accept.

Below is a copy of the letter and the list of signatures.

(Update: NYT editorial page editor Andy Rosenthal responds, saying he didn't run the letter because it was a thinly disguised "press release." Citing the letter below, TPM's Greg Sargent talks to a Clinton insider about the campaign's apparent new strategy of running against the media.)

To the Editor,

In regards to Patrick Healy's story on Sun, Feb 24, 2008, "Somber Clinton Soldiers On as the Horizon Darkens"

The unnamed advisers and aides the story relies on speak for nobody but themselves.

The rest of us - thousands of her supporters, friends, members of her staff and volunteers - are working tirelessly each and every day and night, because we believe in Hillary. We believe she will win the nomination. We believe she will win in November. And we know she will make the best President of the United States.

Hillary is a voice for countless Americans across the country who need a champion, a problem solver, a president. That's what she's done her whole life. That's what inspires us. Those of us who have had the honor of working for Hillary Clinton - as First Lady, as Senator, and as a candidate for the Presidency - are awed by her passion and her service. We all strive to live up to her example, to do our best every day to serve this nation.

Millions of Americans across the country have already cast their votes and made it clear that they want Hillary Clinton as their president. Millions more have yet to have their chance. These are the opinions and voices that matter.

Signed,

Hillary Clinton staff & volunteers (Listed Alphabetically)

If the Clinton campaign want this to run in the NYT, they should buy a full page ad space & run it.

Once again she proves that when things don't go her way, she will bite the hand that feeds her. NYT has not only endorsed her, but has bent over backwards to give the harridan positive coverage, and then they write something which was neither negative nor positive, she throws a temper tantrum. God, how I despise this woman.

I've always defended Hillary and never understood why Republicans thought she was such a bitch. I know exactly where they're coming from now. This is the first time I've ever disliked her.

It comes in different ways for differnt people at different times. Many many former supporters have come to see the Clintons in a different light, recognizing their dishonesty, greedy, mean-spiritedness, and corruption.

Once you see it, the pattern becomes clear, and you can never support the Clintons again.

Hilary sounds like Liz Taylor during the Oscars a few years back, when she and Newman were presenters. They played a clip from "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" with both of them in it, and Newman quipped, "Who were those good looking kids?" To which Liz the Bloated Behemoth responded, "Hey, I think we still look pretty good." All Newman could say was, "Uh, yeah."

Hilary's campaign is doing great? Uh, yeah.

Here is the problem with Hillary haters: they only feel this way because deep down they know she is telling the truth and they choose not to accept it because they are so blatantly enamored by Obama's faux charm and appearance and because they are so "wounded" by Bush/Cheney's antics that anything down the middle is not good enough. According to many of you who post moderation has now become synonomous with evil. So in this spirit, dieters go back to overfeeding yourselves, those who are sober should keep getting drunk and psychotics should stop their meds, Lets all go back to maxing out our credit cards and failing to have a head on our shoulders. Do you all realize that this is how you appear to the rest of us with common sense. When you disown moderation, you end up with serious dilemmas.

I got your moderation right here. YOUR candidate authored a bill calling for an amendment to the constitution banning flag burning. And that's it, since she hit the Senate.
And just for your edification-all charm is "faux."

I love Hillary but I think she is losing this race, could not win the Presidential election, and her campaign advisors have advised her horribly. Hillary's crappy campaign lead me to opt for Obama, who until the last month was a very distant 2nd choice for me. Your post is chalk full of false assumptions, and it sounds like you are buying into the rhetoric of Hillary's heavy-handed campaign managers. Not very smart.

A re-post brought on by "NYT has bent over backwards to give this harridan positive coverage"... which is a joke in and of itself.

The NYT is a joke. Is there anyone out there with any journalistic credibility, or the ability of critical thought, or common sense, who DOESN'T think the Times is a big, fat joke?

OBAMA SO MUCH FOR BEING PURE...

Hedge Funds Embrace Obama, Donate Less to Clinton
By REUTERS

Filed at 4:50 p.m. ET

BOSTON (Reuters) - Hedge funds shifted bets in the hotly contested U.S. presidential race in January when they wrote bigger checks to Democratic contender Barack Obama after favoring his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton in 2007.

The $1.8 trillion hedge fund industry donated $50,450 to Obama last month when the Illinois senator won wide support among voters in early caucuses and primaries, new data show.

Clinton, who lost Iowa but defied pollsters by winning the New Hampshire primary, took in $18,800, the lowest donated to either party's front runners.

In comparison, hedge funds gave $26,400 to Republican front-runner Sen. John McCain in January, according to the data compiled for Reuters by the Center for Responsive Politics, a nonpartisan campaign finance research group.

"Hedge funds may be synchronizing their giving with Obama's pull ahead in the polls, and people might be realizing that if they haven't given him money already, it might not hurt them to write some checks now," said Denise Valentine, who focuses on hedge funds at financial consulting firm Aite Group.

January's numbers are in contrast to last year when Clinton, a New York senator, pulled in $681,250 while Obama raised $552,374 and McCain received a much smaller $116,550.

Managers and analysts had expected Clinton to keep drawing the lion's share of donations because many hedge funds managers have expressed support for her pro-business stance, health care ideas and education reforms.

Obama's broader calls for change unnerved the loosely regulated industry, several fund managers said privately, worrying change might mean less freedom for them.

But the industry's biggest and most successful funds appear to hedging their bets for a winner after Obama prevailed in 11 contests over the last two weeks.

"Obama may not be explicitly for hedge funds, but managers want to make sure that he isn't against them either and that might factor into the trend in new donations," Valentine said.

New York hedge fund Renaissance Technologies, run by former mathematics professor Jim Simons, supported Clinton with $50,600 last year. In January the fund gave nothing to its home-state senator but donated $9,100 to Obama who received only $2,300 from Renaissance in 2007.

Individuals can give only $2,300 during the primaries.

Similarly, D.E. Shaw, another New York-based fund, was less generous with Clinton in January, giving her only $3,600 compared with the $9,325 the fund's employees donated to Obama. Last year, Clinton pulled in $58,500 from D.E. Shaw, outpacing the $17,294 that Obama received.

Liberalism refers to a broad array of related ideas and theories of government that consider individual liberty to be the most important political goal.[1] Liberalism has its roots in the Western Age of Enlightenment.

Broadly speaking, liberalism emphasizes individual rights and equality of opportunity. Different forms of liberalism may propose very different policies, but they are generally united by their support for a number of principles, including extensive freedom of thought and speech, limitations on the power of governments, the rule of law, the free exchange of ideas, a market or mixed economy, and a transparent system of government.[2] All liberals — as well as some adherents of other political ideologies — support some variant of the form of government known as liberal democracy, with open and fair elections, where all citizens have equal rights by law
