Ellen Drops In On Clinton Event

Ellen Degeneres appeared via satellite at presidential contender Sen. Hillary Clinton's low-dollar fundraiser in Washington DC, surprising the audience, and perhaps giving Clinton a boost at a time when all of the endorsements and momentum seems to be swinging towards her rival Barack Obama. Clinton was reciting her stump speech to a very young and energetic audience- when the screen behind Clinton turned into a feed of Ellen interrupting and saying she had a few questions.

"I have said I have a problem with glitter" Ellen said, "It should be banned. It doesn't warn you, there's glitter on your fingers, there's glitter everywhere, you open the card you open the wrapping paper, will you put a ban on glitter?

Watch it here.

hillary has to stop emphasizing support from old, white women if she hopes to pick up other-than voters.

I think that Ellen has the right to support Hillary and Oprah has the right to support Obama. They are both tax-paying U.S. citizens, Right?

I think some people are taking things way to personally on the Huff Post. Ellen is entitled to support anybody she wishes, and, eventhough I support Obama, I don't think Hillary is the devil. I voted for Bill Clinton in 92 and 96, and I respect Hillary's work in the Senate. I do wish Hillary Clinton took the high road a little more often, but she's used to battling republicans and so is also used to taking the gloves off in those fights. Non of us Dems minded the Clinton style of politics when they were used against republicans. BUT i do think the day has come for a new style of politics in washington dc.

We all can agree on many core Dem beliefs, and we also can agree that this is truly a historic election and that's got people more animated and heated then we've ever seen in the past. Let's not blow this opportunity - the way Dems have in 2000 and 2004.

I'm disappointed to hear about this. I would have thought that Ellen would be against people like Hillary that will attack you personally after what she went through years ago.

It's too bad she's shown a new self here.

What's with all the anger and hatred here? Seems to me some people have too much time on their hands, are perhaps depressed and pissed at the world so they spend their time spewing venom on sites like this. I have time because I'm old and retired, not unemployed, depressed and angry. So sad to see all this.

I agree. The comments here are some of the worst I've seen on all of HuffPost. Mostly very shallow and disappointing.

The gay and lesbian community aren't likely to support Obama after his comments in SC.

And I find it absolutely appalling that so many people attack others for their preferred candidate.

That's completely undemocratic in spirit and attitude.

My dislike of Oprah's politics certainly doesn't have anything to do with my respect for her as an entertainer.

What is wrong with you people, anyway?

So intolerant and crazy-sounding.

It does seem that Clinton capitalized on Obama's event in SC to win a greater share of the gay vote. I think so far she's won the gay vote by 2-1, at least in the big states like CA and NY. What those gay voters apparently do not realize is that Obama's the stronger advocate for equal rights for gays than Clinton is, at least on the marriage issue. (Not that either of them are as unequivocally supportive as someone like Dennis Kucinich.)

Obama favors *complete* repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act, a Republican-created bill signed into law by Clinton's husband. Clinton would only repeal half of it. While she advocates federal recognition of all marriages, she also favors the ability of states to deny recognition of legal marriages conducted in other states. Obama opposes this denial of recognition.

This suggests a few things:

1) that gay voters are ignorant of the candidates' actual stances on the biggest gay rights issue to come along in decades

2) gay voters were more interested in punishing Obama for the antigay preacher at his SC event than they are interested in obtaining equal rights

3) gay issues are not the top issues for gay voters, and they're as politically complex as any other demographic group

I think all three things are probably true.

One more factor:

4) they are still inordinately beholden to Bill Clinton for "don't ask, don't tell."

You are a well informed poster, and I appreciate that compared to some of the blather that hits the screen here.

That said, I will add a few more notes. The gay community still feels a connection to the Clintons as Bill was the only preseidential candidate that ever stood up for us and used the term 'gay and lesbian.' His attempt to fix gays in the military was AT LEAST AN ATTEMPT.

In addition to the above, San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom held two fundraisers for Obama, and apparently, Obama refused to be seen in the same room as the gay-friendly mayor. Newsom recently spoke on this issue, stating he would support Obama, "I believe in his leadership qualities, and I look forward to voting for him," Newsom said. "In eight years." For more on this issue, check out the SF Chronicle at: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/02/05/BAM5US1B5.DTL

Hillary, on the other hand, has at least reached out to the gay community by meeting with groups and stating, "I am proud to stand by your side," and "I want you to know that just as you always have an open door to my senate office, you will always have an open door to the White House and together we can continue this journey." (For more, check out: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/03/05/AR2007030500490.html

Do these things make or break a candidate in the eyes of the gay community? You would have to go back to your number one point, as some just go along like many others do - with what the media steers them to.

Oh, Ellen...I've always liked watching you more than I liked watching Oprah.

Serves me right; I liked you because your show was funnier, and carried far fewer serious segments that I actually had to think about.

I hate getting my nose rubbed into "As ye sow, so shall ye reap".

Ellen is a fair, progressive, strong woman who can sympathize with the plight Hillary faces in terms of unfair press, biased reporting, and being slammed for being a strong woman. I am glad respectable strong woman have been coming out for Hillary - Whoopi, Ellen, Tina Fey - versus condescending "holier than thou" women like Oprah, Maria Shriver and Caroline Kennedy. GOOD FOR ELLEN! GOOD FOR HILLARY! GREAT FOR WOMEN and THIS COUNTRY!

Ellen has clearly demonstrated her HATE of the United States of America by sharing the stage with the single greatest threat to our country.

Oprah will crush her with her jaws of death, then likely buy her a Geo Prizm.
