It's the day of the Cleveland debate, the 20th in a series and the latest hotly-anticipated match-up between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, but instead of looking ahead to how this debate might shape the upcoming primaries, the persistent buzz seems to be that Clinton should leave the race — now. Jonathan Alter's "Hillary Should Get Out Now" is the #1 most-viewed and most-emailed article on Newsweek.com, and he's got company in WaPo's Richard Cohen, the NYT's Bob Herbert, and perpetual Dem cheerleader Robert Novak. Here's Alter:

If Hillary Clinton wanted a graceful exit, she'd drop out now — before the March 4 Texas and Ohio primaries — and endorse Barack Obama... Withdrawing would be stupid if Hillary had a reasonable chance to win the nomination, but she doesn't. To win, she would have to do more than reverse the tide in Texas and Ohio, where polls show Obama already even or closing fast. She would have to hold off his surge, then establish her own powerful momentum within three or four days... It's time to stop overlearning the lesson of New Hampshire.

Alter looks at the polls, crunches the numbers, does delegate math, and makes a convincing case that Clinton really needs a big win Ohio and Texas on March 4th, and probably won't get it. Except that we already knew that. He says, "to withdraw this week would be the best thing imaginable for Hillary's political career. She won't, of course, and for reasons that help explain why she's in so much trouble in the first place." But wouldn't those also be the reasons that help explain why she's still around after all these years?

That, of course, is what feeds into the other Hillary meme: Tenacity. The big lesson after New Hampshire was "don't count a Clinton out" (it was nominally "don't trust polls," but we've seen scant evidence of that) and since then the Clinton Comeback been the failsafe, kneejerk CYA argument keeping poll numbers at bay (i.e. here and here and here and here). While "don't count her out" hardly portends a victory, it does serve to remind that Clinton still has a pretty solid constituency among Democrats (though you do hear more about Obama's 11 straight victories than Clinton's big-state victories, even though the popular vote total from 13 caucuses was 1.2 million, compared with over 20 million in primaries). Long shot to win Ohio and Texas? You'd think so from the talk, but technically she still has a lead in those states (in Texas, emphasis on "technically").

None of this is to say that Clinton's favored to win — she's not, trend-wise (i.e. erosion of her lead). But even so, suggesting she drop out before March 4th seems a tad dire, so it's surprising that it's become such a media meme. I've watched the same debates, the same coverage, and don't agree that "A referee would stop the fight," as Herbert says, nor that "Hillary Clinton is exhausted, and her supporters are becoming increasingly demoralized." That piece was published Saturday, the same day that Clinton angrily challenged Obama to "Meet me in Ohio!" (exhausted?) and the same day that Tina Fey exhorted Texas and Ohio voters that "it's not too late" to throw their support behind a, er, person who got stuff done (demoralized?). Herbert was coming off the media's interpretation of Hillary's Thursday night debate-closer as a valedictory; amazing how out of date that seems now, doesn't it? I met two Hillary supporters coming out of the SNL dress rehearsal — identified by the huge stickers on their chests — and they were overjoyed at Fey's rant and the opening sketch which portrayed the media fawning over Obama. "The jig is up," one said. "Let's just hope there's enough time."

And there's that word — hope! Audacious, isn't it, for Hillary to have any? Ask WaPo's Cohen:

Politics can be ugly, not to mention sad. Broken dreams are strewn across the American landscape. Fred Thompson resigned from "Law & Order." Chris Dodd moved his family from Connecticut to Iowa just for the caucuses. Mitt Romney blew through a fortune. John Edwards campaigned through personal pain. The difference between a presidential candidate and a fool in love is only a matter of Secret Service protection.

Sweetly expressed and spot-on, though I am compelled to point out that technically only Clinton and Obama have had Secret Service protection. But otherwise, true — and let's not forget John McCain, who would have led that list six months ago. Like a lovesick puppy desperately hitting "send" on yet another pleading email, these candidates hang on tooth and nail despite the odds, and polls (cf. Richardson, Kucinich, Ron Paul). Yet political fortunes can change, dramatically — especially in this race (cf. Huckabee), so why not? Who knows, if Chris Dodd and Joe Biden had been considered the front-runners in this race instead of Clinton and Obama from the start, things might have been different (if you doubt, I draw your attention here to the Chris Dodd Debate Clock from June — face time makes a difference. And to anyone who takes themselves seriously pushing Obama as an "underdog," I further direct your attention to the person with the most face and airtime that night). The media doesn't make decisions for the voters, but they do have the power to, say, cut away from Hillary Clinton's speech to an Obama speech in the blink of an eye.

I admit that I was surprised to encounter those Hillary supporters Saturday night, just as I was surprised that so many commenters supported her after Tina Fey's commentary on SNL. It's not popular these days to support Hillary Clinton, but people do. They don't fill stadiums, but they do exist. Let's bring it back to the numbers: Just north of 21 million people have voted so far, and Obama is leading by just south of 1 million — but if you break out the red state wins (i.e. states Dems won't ever carry) then the margins get smaller. If ten million people voted for Hillary Clinton so far, isn't that a decent reason to see how the chips fall in Ohio and Texas — two states where she still, incidentally, has the edge? There are many ways of crunching the available numbers, and no one would say they indicate a shoo-in for Clinton. But you rarely see them crunched in favor of Clinton, or the fact that she has actual, legitimate support.

Let's face it, Hillary Clinton being upbeat and likable has never been a meme of this campaign, though if you read far enough along in Patrick Healy's NYT story, "Somber Clinton Soldiers on as Horizon Darkens," you might find some evidence. It's the third paragraph from the bottom...on the second page :

Through it all, Mrs. Clinton has not retreated into a shell. She asks her aides about their children, spouses and partners. She tries to keep the mood upbeat on the campaign plane, such as recently joking about how Ohio is so diverse that it sometimes feels like five different states. She looks and seems at her happiest after working rope lines and talking to people after round tables, hearing their stories and receiving hugs.

Wow, that sounds almost...likable. Might a paragraph like that ever be the lede? Probably not — even the audacity of hope has its limits.

Rachel:

Can you also explain why the media will not expose the fact that this stuff is going on and why. I constantly post it here hoping people will see what is going on but nobody seems to care but me.

The Republicans are selecting bothe the Republican AND the Democratic candidates this year and I can't convince the voters.

I have never seen these links before but I thank you for posting them. What the Republicans are doing isn't illegal but it doesn't seem very ethical to me either. I don't vote in Republican primaries because a) I'm not a Republican and I feel that who their nominee becomes is a decision that should be made by their own party. I'm sorry they don't feel the same way but I am in no way surprised. These kind of tactics are what their party has become known for. I thank you for sharing though and for trying to inform others.

Meh, if Obama was in Hillary's position he would be the next Mike Huckabee. Hillary gets a free pass on the math even though she occasionally gets hassled and for evidence people keep going back to New Hampshire to defend their point(for some inexplicable reason).

Hillary needs about 60% of the vote in Texas, Ohio, AND Pennsylvania to TIE Obama, a feat she has only achieved once this entire primary season (in Arkansas).

She can keep on running, but she won't win without a miracle.

I hope she stays in right up to the convention. With neither candidate achieving the number of delegates to secure the nomination, the decision should be made on the convention floor. Then the news coverage of the convention would not be the snooze that it has become.

The problem with Hillary isn't the media. It's the lack of substance in her campaign. She chose a union buster to run things, she has sent her husband out as surrogate candidate hoping people would vote for her because they like him, and she has relied primarily on large corporate donors to fund her run.

During her senate years, Hillary has ignored all progressive issues and instead aligned herself with the neocons, apparently hoping she could neutralize their hatred of her. Bad choice.

Hillary started out the front runner because her husband is a former president, and because he did a shakedown of every major corporate interest in this country to amass a fortune to buy the nomination. Not because of anything Hillary has done. It's so pathetic to see her reach back to when she was 25 to come up with an incident of her doing something to benefit others (her stint at Children's Rights Group).

How different it could have been if Hillary had opposed this war in Iraq, if she had opposed the tax cuts, if she had demanded an increase in minimum wage, if she had sponsored laws to cut credit interest rates to 10%, if she had gone after the lenders for their irresponsible lending practices. She could have been a leader, would have been seen as a visionary. But she didn't do any of those things or anything else of note.

How can she revive a campaign based upon falsehoods? What does she have to present to the voters? That she was always against Nafta? We know that's a lie. She's got nothing. Smoke and mirrors aside, there is no reason for anyone to vote for Hillary.

I think a lot of your points are valid and much of why I opposed Hillary Clinton. However, my contention is with the treatment of Hillary Clinton. Though I didn't believe she had proven worthy of my vote based on her positions, I do respect much of her career and her good works over the years in many areas of civil/human rights and has largely been on the right side of politics. However, my other big contention is what you say about smoke and mirrors I largely attribute to Barck Obama as well. That is the problem. He is being given a free pass for many of the same issues that Hillary Clinton is being raked over the coals for, and other than his speech in 2002, his record reflects anything but change and much of politics as usual and a near Bobsey Twin record of voting with Hillary Clinton. Why is Obama given a pass on his contradictory positions since being in the senate to his persona as the anti-war candidate -campaigned and supported Joe Lieberman, the war guy himself - Benedict Arnold, over Ned Lamont, the anti-war candidate in the Connecticut senate race, voted for funding of war repeatedly without any major stances against, even in verbage, reauthorized the Patriot Act, etc. That is the gripe I have with him, that I don't see him as being what he is projected to be. Dennis Kucinich - yes, Barack Obama - sorry, no, just not seeing the political principle here, and I think we're being pulled one over on and I think he deserves every bit as much scrutiny as Hillary Clinton does.

I tried, I really did. As a woman, I thought why wouldn't I or why shouldn't I vote for Hillary Clinton. So I watched the debate with the singular thought that if Obama were to lose to her, would I be willing to stand behind her, stand behind my own party. So it began with Tim Russert's first question, which we all know was given to her(and if you don't know that, you're not into politics and haven't seen all the pundits comment on) which I thought was a show of respect to her. Oh no..not in Hillary's world. In Hillary's world that was a cheap shot by the press to "get her" immediately, Paranoid? Then she proceeded into a liteny about being asked the first question 'all the time' and if I understood this correctly, it was "not fair." she then reminded us about the Saturday Night Live skit in which Obama gets all the ammenities(including extra pillows to sit on)and she gets dirt from the press. A bit trite? She lost me in her first words, totally and forever. I want her out now. She will polarize this country as much as George Bush has done. I will not vote for her even if by some bizaare set of circumstances she is the nominee. That being said, I will not vote for McCain. It is my belief that this country will be so disappointed with her as a candidate and old politics back into play, that what Obama has been able to accomplish in these past couple of years will return to 40 more years of old politics and lack of hope for a country which we all love. It is time for Hillary to step down and let Obama lead the way, he is a leader, he drawers the crowds. And isn't that what we want here? A president which draws crowds, whose voice alone brings us rushing to the television to hear his speeches, to make a change in this country for which this young generation has never seen? I want a leader that I am in love with, isn't that o.k.? Doesn't that love make us stand up and listen, take action and help him as he asks? I say, "what's love got to do with it?" Everything.

God, I hate a mob and this Obama craze just seems to have that element of mob to it and please realize that the mob often gets it wrong - like they did in Iraq. Because 90% said it was so, didn't make it so, did it? I think everyone should THINK FOR THEMSELVES!!! That is what has been lost in this process and with the help of our propagandist media, who selected the outcome from the get go. People are in deep trouble, because they actually think they are thinking for themselves.

I have no problem with Hillary staying in the race. I have vowed time and again that I will support her fully if she is the nominee.

Here is my problem: She has chastised and belittled Dem voters by insinuating that we are delusional and/or irrelevant. If we are to get behind her, she is going to need to give us some ground to stand on.

I would expect Clinton to have the most polished elite political machine behind her, and I have been shockingly disappointed at the way her campaign has been run.

I cannot believe you would even write such a silly post. This woman has lost 11 primaries--if her last name were Smith or Johnson, she would have been history by now.

Just because her husband is the former President does not entitle her to these "do-overs." I'm sick of this lame thinking.

The press has been biased against her and lately it has become very obvious--perhaps, this has something to do with the way the Clinton campaign has kept her away from the press--cozying up to them only after all of the loses she has suffered. This is a two way street Rachel--she rebuffed the media and now she is getting hammered by them because of her initial disdain for them.

I will admit, her vote for No Child Left Behind, the Iraq War vote, the fact that she did NOT even read the intelligence report leading up to the war were very problematic for me. However, when she joined Kyl and Lieberman by voting for their recent authorizing amendment, that was the deal breaker for me.

Rachel, you can carry on all you want and natter on and on--but think about what you are writing. Also, why do you have to always, always highlite in red--it is unnecessary and it is tiresome.

HRC and O are in a virtual tie, a dead heat -- and these idiots are saying she should gracefully exit now!! And the media of course is not biased against Se Clinton. Whay aren't they calling for O to gracefully exit?

BTW, you say there's less than a million votes difference between them. What about the over 2 million of their own Dem voters the DNC has disenfranchised? A lot of media bias about that too.

I don't bemoan Hillary for wanting to stay in the race, that is her right and by all means democracy is better served when discussions continue. However, to pray for another candidate to "slip" up or be swift boated isn't a strategic campaign, its more along the lines of Huckabees miracle strategy.

Have you not heard of Damage Control?

Yes, the DNC and all those running Congressional races want Hillary gone asap, after her wild woman ranting from last weekend.

And she and her husband scolding and scorning Obama's supporters/voters. Too much! Talk about turning friends into your enemies. Duh!

SHE HAS AND IS HURTING THE PARTY.

And if she so sweet and kind, why not look into the questions about her not paying the vendors from Iowa, New Hampshire and Wisconsin.

Have they been paid yet? After she gave her campaign

$5 million, she didn't pay them.

How long does it take for her sweetness to surface?

Now you have a new topic for your next article.

Rachel, I think she should keep going, because it only improves Barack's chances in November. He is beating the 'incumbent' deftly and only continues to build momentum. Obviously, Hillary is a better Debater than John McCain, not as good as Barack, so it only serves to build upon his growing stature as a thoughtful, educated, and superior candidate. Barack brings common sense to the table, instead of Politics as usual. Her Universal Mandated Health Care is unattainable and complete bullocks and is an attempt to pander to people who don't know any better.

Al Gore was bashed without mercy in 2000 by the media but you didn't hear him whining about it. He always maintained his dignity and integrity to the end and has gone on to become even more highly respected in Democratic party. There is a lesson in there somewhere.

Biden, Hart, Dukakis, Mondale, Dean...the landscape is littered with candidates taken out in midstream with the press blasting away at them yet Hillary should be exempt?

If anything it sounds like Hillary has gotten kid glove treatment along with Obama because the press would like to see the Dems stand up and show what class and grace is suppose to look like. That little tirade over the weekend was every bit as bizarre as the "Dean Scream" yet no one came out blasting from the press.

Hillary has run a bad campaign and is suffering the consequences. Ask Rudi how that works. She is young enough to still be a viable future candidate but if she implodes during this run it's over for her. Truth is she felt all along like she was entitled to this and feels like the first term senator from Illinois has not paid his dues. If she does not let go gracefully she is done on the national and world stage.

Hmmmm...young looking and hopeful v. older looking and bitter. We know how superficial the media is so lets not act surprised. Dennis Kucinch supporters are used to the b.s. and deal with it. Hell, Bill Clinton got more press than Dennis. Nobody complains about media bias when its biased towards them.

This is all spin. The candidates have debate consultants who work with each of the debate sponsors (the TV/cable folks). They plan everything from whether the debates will be with the candidates standing vs. sitting, the length of time, whether there will be flashing lights, who sits to the left or right of who and most importantly they decide in advance as to who will get asked questions first and they are even given the questions in advance. Last night Tim Russert said "well I gave them the questions; they knew what they were going to be asked." So, Hillary was clearly spinning.

Rachel,

Thank you for some balanced coverage here at HuffPo, which has become a major disappointment for me, a long-time poster and supporter of this site (from the beginning) as it has chosen during this election to pursue philosophy over objectivity in its reporting in the news area and fed into an environment that shuts down debate and objectivity in discussion. It has been infiltrated by rude, venamous dialogue and intolerance and I believe much more so from people that support Barack Obama. I am sad to see a site that was started by a woman I had greatly admired choose this course, especially when this site largely came about because of a censored type, skewed environment in the news media that promoted the mainstream line of supporting the Bush mantra and the only recourse for objectivity to dissenting opinion was to go outside the country for new (Canada and BBC). My God, Bill Maher even lost his television program from having a dissenting opinion in that climate.

Which gets me back to thanking you for attempting to interject some objective thought and scrutiny into the process here instead of one sided shilling with blinders on.

I was not a Hillary Clinton supporter over the years at this site, but it was because I believed she had made some very poor judgments in her foreign policy votes. However, to see the vile, mysogenistic, personal attacks on her has been sickening to me as a woman to see another woman subjected to such double standard in the process. I don't recall in my life-time (I am 45 yearold) any other candidate (all men of course) being subjected to the anything close to this. It is pretty sad the male-created sexism that is promoted at this site and in the media not just by men, but women repeating the same derogatory sexist remarks. Women truly are their own worst enemies, except for the few, like Tina Fey, who get what's at stake for women.

I want to reiterate, this is not an endorsement of who to select as the candidate. My condemnation has been on the process and the double standards that Hillary Clinton has been subjected to in that process and regardless of her standing and supposed privilege in her starting position, in the end it was clear she was the female candidate. I have gained respect for Hillary Clinton in holding up through it all with dignity. I disagree with anyone who says otherwise, and that is despite my policy differences with her.

I think you are right to suggest that it is premature for Hillary to quit. It's better for everyone concerned that a clear winner is firmly established before that happens. It will result in a much quicker settling and consolidation after the fact. I personally have preferred Obama for some time now, but I am fully prepared to throw in with Hillary if she is nominated. I suspect that most feel they way I do and will support whichever of the two should win the nomination. It's much more important that we wrench power away from the neocon thugs so that the political hacks that have been appointed to important positions can be flushed down the toilet with Bush.

No.

I'm 47 and I remember quite clearly what happened to the Kennedys, to MLK, to McGovern, to Jane Fonda. You probably don't.

They were all viciously, viciously attacked. Hillary is not unique.

In that same time-frame, Hillary was pure establishment. Goldwater supporter. Couldn't pass the NY State Bar, so she follows her boyfriend to Arkansas and gets married.

Strangely over-enthusiastically defends a man in court who has organized the gang-rape of a 12-year-old girl, and before you start hitting me with that Nuremberg defense "she was only doing her job" crap RTFA at

Neither Hil nor Bill did much to actually enforce their FMLA, which actually resulted in a substantial increase in the number of cases of pregnancy discrimination, because women were technically given "rights" that were not adequately enforced. EEOC cases remained backlogged for 3-5 years under Hil and Bill.

Sexual Harassment became even more widespread under Hill and Bill because -- well he got away with it, why shouldn't everyone else? And Hil enabled it by strategizing to go after his victims with a "nuts and sluts" smear, just like she went after that poor little 12-year-old girl that one of Hil's clients had organized the gang-rape of.

And stop blaming the victims of the patriarchy -- women are not "their" own worst enemies.

Queen Bee Bitches like Hilary Clinton are.
