Julianne Moore

A movie about to be filmed in Pittsburgh is casting Gothic characters -- including an albino-like girl and deformed people -- to depict West Virginia mountain people.

"'Regular-looking" children need not apply.

That's the gist of an open casting call for paid extras for "Shelter," a horror film starring Julianne Moore that will begin shooting in Pittsburgh in March.

The casting call scheduled for Sunday invites "men and women of all races, 18 or older," to try out as extras, according to the announcement from Downtown-based Donna Belajac Casting. But the extras wanted for the West Virginia scenes evoke images of "Deliverance" and "The Hills Have Eyes."

"It's the way it was described in the script," Belajac said Monday. "Some of these 'holler' people -- because they are insular and clannish, and they don't leave their area -- there is literally inbreeding, and the people there often have a different kind of look. That's what we're trying to get."

...

The announcement -- which was sent out in a news release and posted on the casting company's Web site -- asked for people with the following attributes:

"Extraordinarily tall or short. Unusual body shapes, even physical abnormalities as long as there is normal mobility. Unusual facial features, especially eyes."

The announcement requests "a 9-12-year-old Caucasian girl with an other-worldly look to her."

"Could be an albino or something along those lines -- she's someone who is visually different and therefore has a closer contact to the gods and to magic. 'Regular-looking' children should not attend this open call.'"

Be sure and cast Ann Coulter as one of the wives. Put her in a frumpy house dress and she's good to go.

The Prezidunce will be unemployed soon, put a banjo in his hand an a corn cob pipe in his mouth and he will look just like that banjo picking hillbilly in Deliverance.

I've got to stick up for West Virginia and Appalachia here.

West Virginia isn't really "The South". It's technically southern, but it's not the same culture as say Mississippi or Alabama.

People in Appalachia don't sit around reminiscing about their antebellum past, because they never had an antebellum past. It was poor back in the day and it's poor now.

Most of my family are from Appalachian Pennsylvania and Ohio. They're tough, hard working people who look out for each other.
I'm not ashamed to be descended from miners and steel workers.

Aahhh! The south...

...where Shakespeare's "Cry Havok!... and loose the dogs of war!" becomes:

"Clem, holler at 'em kids, and let 'em dawgs out."

Please. As if no rich families have inbreeding. And there has never, ever been any incest in the Midwest, or in suburbs. Let's stop characterizing one another. This film is about a particular place, a pocket of humanity. We could find such a place in many areas of the country and the world.

Just post the question: "if you get a divorce, are you still cousins?"

You'll be able to pick your cast from the respondents. I suspect you'll find they're in every state in the union, not just WV.

Everybody likes to feel superior to somebody. In today's P.C. society where you can be fired from your job or made a social pariah for hating on Jews, women, blacks or gays, there are still West Virginians. Thank God that no one gives a damn for us. If it weren't for people like us, how would you so-called "progressives" maintain your sense of superiority? How many of you people have ever been to West Virginia or even known anyone from West Virginia? If you had, you might have found that the vast majority of us are just like you. We have families, homes and jobs that we go to just like everyone else. Some of us, like me, even have college educations. I come to this website every day to read stories and posts from those whom I considered to be like-minded people. You're not. You people are no different than those down South who have voted Republican since the Civil Rights Act was passed in 1964. You've got your prejudices too. Fuck every one of you.

I am a progressive and am appalled by this mindset. These aren't progressives that are putting out this cast call, they are industry representatives and they should be ashamed of themselves. These representitives are as far removed from regular folks as our clueless reps in Washington. Neither one gets it because neither one has ever visited the region. If they had, they both would understand it is made up of the same kind of people that inhabit every part of this nation. The kind of people that only want the opportunity to prosper, and live happy healthy lives. It's shameful and unbelievably ignorant for this production company to put out this description. Everyone in its sites should boycott it.

We moved to Pittsburgh recently, and I haven't seen anybody yet who fits those descriptions.

Pittsburgh is a great place to make movies because there is so much variety in terrain and qualities and ages of housing, and it has so many small-town-like neighborhoods within the city....it is possible to use it to simulate almost anywhere from the richest mansion to the poorest hovel, from a large city to a hamlet to a rural countryside...it is all here within the city.

There is a view going away from the downtown that if one looks out the back window (not while driving, LOL) one can see the the tall buildings strung like beads along the Monongahela riverfront, whereas if one looks out the front window from the very same spot, it is as though one is driving on a forest-sided mountain road. I have never seen anything like it. (We love it here, and NO, we don't work for the chamber of commerce!)

It sounds as though they are expecting TOO much variety in the human species, though.

dawlishgal,

Welcome to you and your husband as newcomers to the City of Steel. I work in the wonderful Strip District and cross the winding and bending Monongahela River twice on the way to work each day! One of these days somehow we'll meet up on a post over time and I'll buy you lunch somewhere on Liberty, Penn, or Smallman. It is a great city. Filmmakers love it for the reasons you spell out. Every kind of location is here. Yes. It is a city of interesting neighborhoods. You can find everything from 1910 onward decade by decade. For those of you here on HuffPo that have seen the film "Hoffa", they filmed the huge riot scene in the brick street Strip District. We have too much diverse Ellis Island stock here to have the true "inbred" look. But when I visited a sister once who moved to Lexington, KY I thought everyone I saw there looked like they were descended from the same brother and sister on a boat from Scotland. Maybe Julianne Moore should try a casting call there.

Pittsburgh is ethnically diverse.
What has that got to do with WV?
